Microsoft’s Denim Update is Coming To Lumia Soon

The much-talked about Microsoft’s ‘Lumia Denim’ update for Windows 8.1 operating system has begun to roll out to Lumia devices, globally.

Lumia_Denim_lede_0

The Denim update has already debut in US through Verizon with 822 and 928 back in December, but the broader deployment suggests that other Lumias are due relatively soon. If you own new handsets like the Lumia 830, 930 or 1520 , you’ll get faster shooting, Rich Capture (high dynamic range, dynamic exposure and dynamic flash) and better image quality.

Apart from the 830, these phones can also handle 4K video and hands-free Cortana commands. Everyone gets features like Start screen folders, a better web browser and Cortana refinements that include support for in-car speech. Denim is the fourth update to Windows Phone 8.1-equipped Lumia phones, after Lumia Amber, Black and Cyan.

It’s arriving in waves by country and device, and a wider roll out will commence within the month, according to the company. There is still uncertainity as to whether Indian Lumias will be included in latest wave of update or not.

• The First Microsoft-Branded Lumia Arrives Next Week

The First Microsoft-Branded Lumia Arrives Next Week

Microsoft confirmed that the first Lumia which is going to launch under the company’s banner will arrive on Tuesday. The software powerhouse has already started sending teasers of an unveiling for the 11th of November, with a tag line that says, “Microsoft is delivering the power of everyday mobile technology to everyone.” The teaser displays an orange curved Lumia device.

Microsoft officially killed the Nokia brand for its upcoming Lumia handsets, and Tuesday’s launch will mark the first time when Lumia device will come without the Nokia branding. While many are speculating it as a flagship device, sources believe that Microsoft will launch this budget device next week.

Microsoft did hint at the possibility of a new Lumia launch soon, with features similar to that of the Lumia 830. It appears to be the latest addition to the low-end Windows Phone from Microsoft. A ploy that the company is using to compete against Android and iOS, as it struggles to stamp its authority in terms of overall OS market share.

It’s still a mystery as to how Microsoft will name its first Lumia; it could even do away with the number scheme we have seen with Lumia devices in the past.

Earlier this month, Microsoft officially killed the Nokia brand for its Lumia smartphones, and now images have surfaced of what appears to be a new device with the Microsoft Lumia branding.

Images from Chinese regulator TENAA reveal a new Lumia handset with the Microsoft branding on the front and rear, and perhaps it is a larger version of the Lumia 530. Dubbed as the RM-1090 as of now, it offers dual-SIM connectivity.

We have a witnessed a slew of launches by Microsoft over the past few months, with price and availability being their primary focus. We are expecting the RM-1090 to be on the same lines and see the possibility of it being unveiled before Christmas.

• Microsoft Opens New Site for Lumia Apps Beta Tests, Drops Nokia Beta Labs

Microsoft Opens New Site for Lumia Apps Beta Tests, Drops Nokia Beta Labs

Microsoft has recently announced that the company is closing the Nokia Beta Labs site, but users will still be able to test apps under development via the new Lumia Beta Apps site. Microsoft said that the new site is designed to elicit more feedback and make it easier for users to participate.

The Nokia site betalabs.nokia.com will be discontinued from August 31, 2014. Thereafter, all links to the Nokia site will be redirected to Lumia Beta Apps. The new site is includes UserVoice, which also hosts the Windows Phone Feature Suggestion box page and more.

On the Lumia Beta Apps site, users will be able to find information about ongoing trials, instructions on how to install apps, and notes about features and known issues. Each beta has its own feedback forum for interacting with other users and the teams developing the apps. The ongoing trials at Nokia Beta Labs will continue at the new site and users can continue to give feedback and interact there.

lumia beta testing

The beta apps can be downloaded via Microsoft’s Windows Phone store, by clicking on a link or by scanning a QR code. Anyone is welcome to participate, but Microsoft prefers if users have a “relatively new Lumia smartphone”, “are willing to tolerate rough edges” and aren’t afraid to share their opinions, company said.

Presently, four apps – Nokia CameraYahoo-powered Nokia Chat, App Social and Nokia Conference are available in the beta version. These apps will be rolled out publicly following testing and app revisions based on the feedback given to their respective development teams.

The change is a clear indication of the company’s plan of dropping Nokia as a brand image. Back in April, Stephen Elop, now Executive Vice President of the Microsoft Devices Group, said, “Nokia as a brand will not be used for long going forward for smartphones. Work is underway to select the go-forward smartphone brand.”

• Hands on with the new Nokia Lumia 630 running Windows Phone 8.1

Hands on with the new Nokia Lumia 630 running Windows Phone 8.1

Nokia is excited about the new Nokia Lumia 630 and so are we.

Nokia just announced a flurry of devices to go along with Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 8.1 update. The new Nokia Lumia 630 is one such device which will be available in India soon within a price bracket that will satisfy many a buyers.

India will be amongst the first countries in the world to get the first ever Windows Phone 8.1 device, when it launches this May for a price that may be well under the Rs. 13000 price bracket.

First Impressions
Think Nokia Lumia 520 meets Nokia X and iPhone 5c
Think Nokia Lumia 520 meets Nokia X and iPhone 5c this is what the resultant is: A big bright phone with swappable color back panels, a great build quality and impressive OS handling.

Running Microsoft’s recently announced Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box we were quite impressed by this device’s performance on the pre-build OS. The handset has been tastefully pastured with matte finish on the back which is flatter on the sides and slightly rounded at the back.

This is also the first Windows Phone handset to ditch the hardware touch keys for on screen buttons, and it may take a while to get used to especially if you are coming from a previous Lumia.  You also end up losing a lil bit of the screen real estate.

On Screen Buttons
On Screen Buttons

The Nokia Lumia 630 may as well be an entry level handset if you look at the hardware. The front poses a 4.5-inch IPS ClearBlack display with a 854 x 480 px resolution Corning Gorilla Glass 3 but no front camera, the rear has a 5 Mp camera but lacks any flash or lighting.

Nokia Lumia 630 19
2 Sim Cards and 128Gb micro SD Support

It takes in two Micro Sim cards, only the first one handles 3G data while the other holds on to 2G. Smart call forwarding forwards the call from the second sim to the first sim or vice versa if you are on a call so both sim cards are sort of active.

Nokia Lumia 630 23

The battery is bigger than previous versions of the Lumia family with an 1850 mAh battery in the back.

RAM may be the one thing that brings down the Lumia 630, with just 512 MB under its hood, the hardware level disappointment will create a major withdrawal. Especially considering that previous “budget” Lumias have been shipping with 1 GB.

• Main camera sensor: 5 MP
• Display size: 4.5”
• Display resolution: FWVGA (854 x 480)
• Processor name: Snapdragon 400
• Battery capacity: 1830mAh
• RAM: 512 MB
• Mass memory: 8 GB

Thanks to Windows Phone 8.1 out of the box, you get smart sim management, various in built sense options including WiFi Sense, Battery Sense and Storage Sense. You will also get the new boxy notification panel dubbed “Action Center” which was long anticipated.

Nokia Lumia 630 Press Render Leaks

The rumored Nokia Lumia 630 is thought to be one of the first handsets to run Microsoft’s incoming Windows Phone 8.1 OS and it was shown off  today in a leaked press render.

The phone has been leaked through the @evleaks Twitter account, and is a traditional press-style glamor shot of a phone apparently named the Lumia 630. Pictured in five different colors, it’s shown running Windows Phone 8.

Some of the notable feature here include a lack of fixed hardware controls on the front of the device. Rather, the new version of Windows Phone will allow for the inclusion of on-screen prompts for the usual back, Windows, and search commands.

The leaked shot also shows that the Nokia Lumia 630 lacks a camera flash and, in a first for a Windows Phone, a physical camera shutter button.

Not much is known about the handset at this point, but according to one of the images posted on Baidu, the Lumia 630 will feature a 4.5-inch display with a decent enough resolution of 854 x 480 pixels. Under the hood with be the mid-range Snapdragon 400 processor accompanied by 1GB of RAM.

• Nokia Lumia Achieved Record Sales Last Quarter

Nokia Lumia Achieved Record Sales Last Quarter

Sales of Nokia Lumia smartphones have hit a record high as Nokia gears up to release another batch of Windows Phone 8 devices. It represents the fourth consecutive quarter in which Nokia Lumia sales have hit a new peak.

According to the Wall Street Journal‘s sources, Nokia sold “at least eight million” Nokia Lumia phones between July and September. Obviously this doesn’t even approach Apple or Samsung figures, but for a Windows Phone platform that comes a distant third to iOS and Android in usage numbers it’s truly noteworthy.

It’s an improvement on the previous quarter’s record-smashing 7.4 million sales. It’s also a massive increase on the same quarter last year, during which Nokia sold only 2.9 million Lumia phones.

Nokia is expected to release as many as six new devices including the Lumia 2520, which will be the company’s first tablet, and Lumia 1520 at the Nokia World event. A Nokia smartwatch patent emerged just last week, but we don’t expect launch of this device from Nokia this time around as it may very well be in a prototype stage.

Not helping matters is the fact that Apple is expected to the launch its latest iPad on the same day, meaning that Nokia will have some seriously stiff competition as it vies for the world’s attention.

The event will also be the first big public appearance for Elop since the acquisition, which saw him emerge as a leading candidate to take over from current Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer when he goes into retirement in 2014.

• Nokia Leaks Lumia 1520, Confirms 20 MP PureView Camera and Snapdragon 800

Nokia Lumia 1520 is spinning in the rumor mills for quiet some time now, we have seen various leaks showing that Nokia will launch its first phablet device within this month.

The company’s official Tmall store -which is an online marketplace in China- recently published a product detail page for the phablet Nokia Lumia 1520. However, the page has no images of the product itself, but the listing shows the same information that we have seen in the leaks lately, 6-inch 1080p display and 20-megapixel PureView camera. The page also shows a Snapdragon 800 Chipset and the price of the device is shown as 4,999 Yuan (about 50,000 INR) price tag.

1520

While this could just be an intentional display of the specs, just like what happened with Nexus 5 when Google accidentally placed the phone on the Play Store. Having said that, the device will supposedly launch at the Nokia World event which is held tomorrow that is 22 October 2013, if interested you can watch the webcast by clicking here.

In a few weeks at Abu Dhabi at Nokia World, the company will announce its latest product strategy, the Lumia 2520 Tablet. Notorious Tipster @evleaks is back with some fresh images of the upcoming Lumia 2520 tablet in the expected cyan color.

nokia-windows-rt-tablet-rumor

What is currently unknown is the list of specs of the device, however we did hear that it will carry a Snapdragon 800, an outdoor-ready 1080p screen and LTE, the tablet would last a healthy 10 hours on battery. It would also include both 6-megapixel rear and 2-megapixel front cameras, and Nokia may complement the previously mentioned 32GB of storage with a microSD card slot. The only real thing that needs to be found is what OS it will run between an option of Windows 8, RT and Windows Phone.
