5G Compatible Mi Mix 3 Will Launch Ahead Of MWC

Xiaomi launched the Mi Mix 3 smartphone back in October 2018. At the time of its launch, the company promised that a 5G compatible variant of the same will be launched in the year 2019. An invitation poster that has now been taken down revealed that Xiaomi will launch the 5G compatible Mi Mix 3 a day before MWC. Except for the Snapdragon 855 SoC that has the 5G modem built-in, the new device will have similar specifications as the regular variant.

MWC or Mobile World Congress is one of the most significant tech events in the world, especially for mobile devices. The MWC event will be held in Barcelona, Spain between the dates 25-28 February. Usually, MWC sees the launch of flagship smartphones from several manufacturers but this year could be a bit different. Samsung has also scheduled its Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event for 20 February where the company will launch its Galaxy S10 lineup and the foldable phone.

Why Launch The 5G Compatible Mi Mix 3 Before MWC ?

Apparently, Xiaomi wants to grab the maximum attention possible at the time of launching one of the worlds first 5G compatible smartphone. Launching the 5G compatible Mi Mix 3 at an event full of other excellent products can undervalue the significance of the former. Additionally, Xiaomi will likely be able to maintain the sense of appreciation for the smartphone throughout the MWC event.

Mi Mix 3 Features & Design

The Mi Mix 3 has an innovative design with a sliding back that conceals the front-facing cameras. On the front of the smartphone sits a 6.39-inch AMOLED display with a very high screen to body ratio of 93.4%.

The Mi Mix 3 has dual neodymium magnets that provide it with the sliding functionality. According to Xiaomi, the sliding mechanism has been tested up to 0.3 million times which provides a reference point about its durability.

Under the hood, the 5G variant of the Mi Mix 3 will feature the latest Snapdragon 855 SoC that is fabricated using 7 nm manufacturing technology. The chipset consists of an Octa-Core Kryo 485 CPU and Adreno 640 GPU.

For photography, the Mi Mix has dual 12 MP + 12 MP rear cameras and dual 24 MP + 2 MP front cameras. The rear cameras of the Mi Mix 3 can capture 2160p videos and the front camera can capture 1080p videos.

The rear of the Mi Mix 3 is made of Ceramic which harbours the dual rear camera setup and a fingerprint sensor for securely unlocking it. In terms of memory and storage, the 5G compatible Mi Mix 3 is expected to be available in three storage capacities like the standard variant which are as follow:

    • 6 GB RAM + 128 GB ROM
    • 8 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM
    • 10 GB RAM + 256 GB ROM

  • Could This Be The Future Design Of Bezel-Less Smartphones?

Could This Be The Future Design Of Bezel-Less Smartphones?

Smartphones are slowly but surely moving towards a completely bezel-less era. With every passing generation, the smartphones become sleeker. We even have a screen-embedded fingerprint sensor now, for people who want a bezel-less design but, also a front-facing fingerprint sensor. But, are bezels just an unnecessary extension or do they hold any importance?

    Bezel-Less
    Galaxy Note8

With the technology we possess right now, bezels are important. As much as we would like an all-screen no-bezel phone, it seems highly impractical as of now. Apart from a display, the front of the device also houses a camera, sensors and the earpiece as well. Right now, there isn’t a commercialised technology that can house all of this under a display.

    Bezel-Less
    Doogee Mix 3

A leak of a new smartphone by Doogee, however, could be the ultimate design solution for companies striving for an all-screen phone. The images of the devices were uploaded to Twitter by a popular tipster and reveal a sliding back panel which really looks ingenious. Basically, the front of the phone is almost all-screen and the front-facing camera and earpiece are housed in a sliding back panel.

    Bezel-Less
    Mechanism

If you jog your memory a bit and go back to 2007, you will recall a certain Nokia phone. The Nokia N95 had a two-way slider where it slid from top to reveal the “music keys.” In a similar way, the Doogee Mix 3 slides down from top to reveal a camera and the earpiece. This means that a smartphone maker can fit a display without worrying about the front-facing camera and earpiece.

Samsung recently patented a camera that can be housed inside the display but, as of now, it is nothing more than a patent. Samsung decided to go the “infinity display” route with its 2017 flagship phones. It eliminated the side bezels with an edge display and kept the symmetrical top and bottom bezels. The Xiaomi Mi Mix, launched in 2016 had a tri-bezel less design with the bottom bezel housing the camera.

    Bezel-Less
    iPhone X

The Apple iPhone X launched in September with a design completely different than any of its predecessors. It looked more modern with a glass back and extremely thin bezels all around the display. Apple took the call to get rid of Touch ID altogether and introduced Face ID. But, the most noticeable aspect of the iPhone X was the notch on the display.

    Bezel-Less
    Mi Mix

A case can be made whether having a notch on the display is the way forward. People’s despise towards the iPhone X could also be attributed to consumer’s lack of experience with such anomaly. If more smartphone makers adopt the idea, it will expose consumers to more implementations of the notch. Apart from the Essential-Ph1, no other major smartphone maker decided to implement the notch, which meant that the iPhone X was the only smartphone in the market with a design different than what’s “normal.”

However, the notch on the display might hinder in some people’s experience. The old school slider, however, could be a convenient solution for smartphone makers and consumers alike. Until the “camera under the display” technology is commercialised, this seems like the best bet for companies to achieve the goal of an all-screen no bezel design.

  • Xiaomi Launches The Bezel – Less Mi Mix 2

Xiaomi Launches The Bezel – Less Mi Mix 2

The highly anticipated successor to last year’s bezel-less Mi Mix, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has been launched in China at a starting price of CNY 3,299 (Rs. 32,000 approx.). The Xiaomi Mi Mix received a lot of traction in 2016 because of its tri-bezel less design and a front camera placed in the bottom chin. The Mi Mix 2 has been launched with 2017 flagship specifications, thinner bezels and will be available in Black and White colour variants.

While the Mi Mix had a 6.4-inch display with a 17:9 aspect ratio, the new Mi Mix 2 has a 5.99 inch 2160 x 1080 px LCD display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. The Mi Mix 2 has a 12% reduced bottom bezel and a screen-to-body ratio of 80.8%. The device features a cantilever piezoelectric ceramic acoustic speaker and ultrasonic proximity sensor. The device is powered by a 3,400 mAh battery which is considerably smaller than the previous generation Mix’s 4,400 mAh battery. The Mi Mix 2 runs Android 7.1.1 with Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9 on top. Under the hood, the flagship smartphone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, Adreno 540 GPU, 6GB RAM and storage options of 64GB, 128GB or 256GB. A special edition Mi Mix 2 with a full ceramic body, 8GB RAM and 128GB onboard storage has also been announced. The onboard storage will not be expandable due to the absence of a microSD card slot. The fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the device just below the camera.

On the optics front, the Mi Mix 2 has a very unlike-2017 flagship single camera setup at the back. The smartphone sports a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 sensor with 1.25-micron pixels, an f/2.0 aperture 4-axis optical image stabilisation, 5-piece lens, and facial recognition. On the front is a 5MP which features facial recognition as well.

As far as pricing is concerned, the 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant is priced at CNY 3,299 (Rs. 32,000 approx.). The 6GB RAM/128GB variant will cost CNY 3,599 (Rs. 35,300 approx.) and the 6GB/256GB variant will be priced at CNY 3,999 (Rs. 39,200 approx.) The special edition full ceramic body variant with 8GB RAM/128GB storage is priced at CNY 4,699 (Rs. 46,000 approx.). There is no word on the Mi Mix 2’s global availability yet.

  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Leaks With Snapdragon 836 And Android 8.0 Oreo

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Leaks With Snapdragon 836 And Android 8.0 Oreo

Xiaomi has already announced that the Mi Mix 2 will be officially launched on September 11. However, two new images have leaked, and they reveal a few key specifications of the upcoming smartphone.

The images are of the ‘About Phone’ section of the settings menu of the supposed Mi Mix 2. The images reveal that the Mi Mix 2 will have the yet-to-be announced Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 chipset under the hood. The chipset has featured in quite a few rumours lately. The images also show that the Mi Mix 2 will run Android 8.0 Oreo with Xiaomi’s custom skin MIUI 9 on top of it. The smartphone will have 256GB onboard storage and a 6.2 inch 2960 x 1440 px display.

If the Mi Mix 2 does launch with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 836 chipset, it will beat the Google Pixel 2 lineup to be the first smartphone to be powered by this chip. In terms of the optics, the screenshot lists a 20MP rear-facing camera which can be assumed as the primary camera as the Mi Mix 2 is dubbed to feature a dual-camera setup at the back. Other rumours about the phone suggest a 3,400 mAh battery and 6GB of RAM.

As always, these leaks are to be taken with a pinch of scepticism as the MIUI 9 based on Android 8.0 Oreo is not out yet. Also, Qualcomm has not announced the Snapdragon 836 chipset and with the launch less than 10 days away, it seems highly unlikely that Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 will have the chipset.

It’s worth noting that Xiaomi will launch the Mi Mix 2 a day prior to the launch of Apple iPhone 8 and feels confident that it won’t be overshadowed by the mighty iPhone.

  • Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 Specifications Leak in Benchmark Results

The Mi Mix may not have been a popular smartphone for Xiaomi, but it helped the company prove itself in the market place by launching the first phone with an all display front. The Mi Mix 2 has been talked about from as early as January , but some real specifications have started to appear.

Philip Starck, the designer of the original Mix will also be responsible for designing the Mix 2. But more importantly the phone will have a larger screen to body ratio and will replace the iPhone 8 as the phone with the largest screen to body ratio. The phone has recently shown itself on benchmark results of Geekbench here showing off an Octa core 1.9 GHz msm8998 which is the Snapdragon 835. Interestingly the phone also appears to have a 6 GB of RAM as seen on the benchmark results. As for the benchmarks themselves the phone scores a whopping 6431 in the multi-core benchmark, which is impressive.

The Mi Mix 2 is expected to launch with a 6.4 inch curved AMOLED display with a QHD resolution along with a fingerprint embedded in the display. The Mi Mix 2 is also expected to show a 93% screen to body ratio with an 18:9 aspect.

The design reminds us of the Mi MiX however, the edges of the display itself seem to be rounded, and the phone seems a lot more compact than the Mix. Essential Products Inc. is also working on a technology which is similar to Apple’s 3D touch. According to reposts, a few of the prototypes made by Rubin’s company have a size larger than the iPhone 7 plus but with a bezel-less display and ceramic back.
