Future Tech: Scientists Take First Step Towards Developing 3D Mouse Cursor

Over the years, our knowledge about technology has become so vast that we can now create 3D holograms and programs to interact with us. We have mastered the fields of robotics and flying vehicles. But, all our advances have started with an ordinary single click. Yes, a single click of a mouse that hovers the cursor to our desired files and folders.

While most technology requires 3D modeling, the mouse cursor continued to play along the 2D frame. But now, advancing a step further into the 3D world, some scientists have developed techniques to enable computer cursors to interact in 3D for single or multiple users in both, local and remote, collaboration scenarios.

Unveiled at the SIGGRAPH 2015 conference in Los Angeles, researchers from the University of Montreal say the innovation of such technology would help designers to modify their creations in 3D at a whole new level.

Lead researcher Professor Tomas Dorta from the university’s school of Design, said:

Our new technology challenges the notion of what a cursor is and does.

Professor Tomas Dorta, explains that the cursor becomes a drawing and controlling plane. They explained that, for now, the technology uses a tablet to hover the cursor around in a 3D environment, but as time passes by, will soon be used in smartphones and smartwatches.

The team explained how the cursor selects objects in space. The users just sweep the 3D cursors through. Dora added that for manipulations of objects, the users can use signs and movements such as pinching and orientation.

Scientists have also stated that the technology would be able to be used in a wide range of fields like architecture, medicines and computer games.

For example, for an interior designer, while designing a room, they can test different furniture options according to the scale and even work on interior detailing.

This wasn’t a gimmicky rebirth of the cursor, it’s about rethinking how humans interact with computers as part of the creative process.

The technology has been named as Hyve-3D system and the 3D cursor and is supported by Univalor, the university’s technology commercialization unit and, Hybridlab Inc., a startup. Several patents are due for signing.

Canon launches X Mark I Mouse Lite with inbuilt 10 digit Calculator (PR)

Canon does not fail to impress us, this time its a bluetooth laser mouse, which not only looks slick, but also packs a 10 digit full fledged calculator. Called the X Mark I Mouse, not only will this device serve as a calculator on your mouse , it will also act as a 10 digit bluetooth numeric keypad. The company’s camera design team helped to create the hybrid input device, which also includes a trio of mouse buttons and laser tracking.

Canon also announced a Numeric Keypad separately, X Mark I Keypad is a full-size calculator with Bluetooth support that’s powered by either AAA batteries or a built-in solar panel.

The Oppopet Mouse

The Oppopet series of wireless mice is produced by Elecom in collaboration with Nendo. Whats nice about these mice is that the designers have taken a traditional mouse and given it a new persona. Instead of having a regular receiver, these mice have receivers shaped like the tail of an animal, making the devices appear like small pets. While they were announced last year, the devices have just been launched in Japan.

Oppopet requires no drivers and can be used simply by plugging the tail into a free USB port on your desktop or laptop. Equipped with an on-off switch, the 2.4GHz, 3-button optical mouse weighs 55 grams and runs on a single AAA battery. It is produced in models including a fox, dog, dolphin, cat, pig, squirrel, chameleon, and rabbit. Check out the pictures below. We already want one.

It’s a belt which has an old-school Compaq mouse attached to it in place of a regular buckle. Unfortunately, you cant unbuckle the belt with a simple left or right click (or even a double-click). You can now turn your iPad into a fully functional laptop by purchasing the Crux Loaded case. For $250 you can purchase this case which has an iPad dock in place of the screen. It gives you a keyboard and trackpad that connects to your iPad via Bluetooth, and a 7.5 hour extended battery on top of the iPad’s already impressive 10 hour battery. To make full use of it you would need a remote desktop app on your iPad.

Of course, for the price of this dock + the iPad, you could probably buy a decent stand-alone laptop but its always good to have options.

Wow Keys: The iPhone Keyboard Dock

Korean manufacturer Omnio has come out with a few prototypes of its ‘WOW Keys’ USB keyboard last year and is all set to enter the keyboard industry with its finished product this year. Measuring 16 x 4.7 x 1 -inches and weighing 1.4 pounds, the full-size QWERTY keyboard is compatible with both windows and mac operating systems, permitting the docking of iPhones and iPods.

In addition to charging and syncing when connected to the keyboard, the handheld devices can be used for touchscreen control of the PC, including as a numberpad when loaded with a special app. Two-way functionality means that with the press of a button, ‘wow-keys’ can switch from ‘PC mode’, which uses the phone or iPod as touchscreen input to the PC, to ‘iPhone mode’ instead, which permits easy file transfer and utilizes the keyboard for text entry directly into the handheld device. In ‘iPhone mode’, twelve keyboard hotkeys provide shortcut functionality to the docked device, such as ‘search’, ‘home’, ‘play/pause’, and ‘display on/off’.
