  • Snapdeal – Flipkart Deal Is A No Go , Snapdeal To Focus On Snapdeal 2.0

Snapdeal – Flipkart Deal Is A No Go , Snapdeal To Focus On Snapdeal 2.0

Snapdeal looked certain to be Flipkart’s next big acquisition and usher in a duopoly era in the e-commerce sector with Flipkart and Amazon the only two remaining big players. But, on Monday Snapdeal said it was terminating the talks of selling off its stakes to Flipkart, to pursue a new path.

A Snapdeal spokesperson in a statement said, “As we have been exploring strategic options over the months, we have decided to pursue an independent path and terminate all strategic discussions” interestingly without naming Flipkart. The negotiations between Flipkart and Snapdeal for a possible acquisition were said to be mediated by Snapdeal’s principal investor, SoftBank.

Flipkart offered to buy out Snapdeal for a revised amount, valued in the range of $900 million to $950 million last month, but the deal has seemingly fallen through as Snapdeal prepares for Snapdeal 2.0. Flipkart’s offer was discussed with Snapdeal’s investors Ratan Tata and Aseem Premji as well. Kunal Bahl, co-founder and CEO of Snapdeal has insisted to focus on the road ahead of rebuilding the company and focussing on the growth of its business.

We have a compelling direction (Snapdeal 2.0) to create life-changing experiences for millions of buyers and sellers across the country. With the sale of certain non-core assets, we expect to be financially self-sustainable. We look forward to the support of our community, including employees, sellers, buyers and other stakeholders in helping us create a designed-for-India commerce platform.

Flipkart recently sold Freecharge, which it bought for Rs 2,500 crore to Axis bank for Rs 385 crore. Snapdeal 2.0 is turning out to be a difficult chapter for staff and investors alike. Snapdeal has let go of 600 employees in the last month without any notice and only one month’s severance package.

Kunal Bahl, co-founder of Snapdeal elaborated on their new plan, Snapdeal 2.0 and said that it would make possible for anyone to setup an online and focus on providing a wide range of products at a great price. He also stated that they have made progress on this path and are in line to make a profit of Rs 150 crore in the next 12 months.

Last July, Snapdeal boasted a work-force of 9,000 employees. According to a report, Snapdeal is planning to let go off 1,000 of its 1,200 current employees and carry forward with the Snapdeal 2.0 mission with the remaining people. The decision of not taking the deal put forth by Flipkart seems to have taken industry experts by surprise. But, Kunal Bahl has explained that the deal was too complicated to execute.

What Snapdeal 2.0 does for the company is to be seen in the coming months, but the resurgence of Flipkart and the domination of Amazon sure pose a stiff competition for Snapdeal in the Indian e-commerce market.

  • Flipkart All Set To Takeover Rival Snapdeal

Flipkart All Set To Takeover Rival Snapdeal

Flipkart is reportedly closing in on taking over e-commerce rivals Snapdeal. A report claims that the Snapdeal board has accepted Flipkart’s offer in the region of $900-$950 million last week. The future of Snapdeal has been a topic of discussion for the longest time and looks like the speculations will finally end now as the deal reaches a completion.

Snapdeal has raised over $1.5 billion over the years including, from investors such Alibaba and Softbank. Snapdeal was valued at $6.5 billion as recently as 2015 and is now set to be taken over by Flipkart for under $1 billion. It has also been reported that other assets such as FreeCharge, which Snapdal acquired two years ago will be sold off to Axis Bank.

Flipkart’s new CEO Kalyan Krishnamurthy, who took up the position in January of this year seems to be on the track of resurging the e-commerce giants. Under his leadership, Flipkart looks to be preparing to go head-on against global e-commerce leader Amazon. Flipkart also recently raised funding of $1.4 billion from eBay, Microsoft and Tencent at a valuation of $11.4 billion. All in the while acquiring eBay.in under its portfolio.

eBay recently sold its India business, eBay India Private Limited, to Flipkart.

With Snapdeal’s acquisition, Flipkart and Amazon will be the only players in the e-commerce space and this duopoly is a bad news for any other up-and-coming e-commerce player. Flipkart seems to be making up the ground it lost to Amazon in the recent past and this aggressive Snapdeal acquisition is just another step towards gaining back that power position.

Amazon’s heavy investments in their Indian businesses, as much as $5 billion, since it launched India operations in late-2012 indicate that Amazon is serious about turning this duopoly into a monopoly. The e-commerce war is in full swing and it’ll be interesting to see how this pans out in the coming years.

  • Deal Alert : Get the iPhone 6 For as Low as Rs. 37,488

Deal Alert : Get the iPhone 6 For as Low as Rs. 37,488

Lo and behold, Snapdeal is letting buyers get iPhone 6 for as low as Rs. 37,488 for the 16 GB variant. This is followed by the 64 GB version at Rs. 45,999, and Rs. 63,344 for the 128 GB variant. The price is so low thanks to the Cash back deal being offered to SBI debit and credit card users. Considering the fact that the 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 was initially launched at Rs. 53,500 in the country, while the 64 GB  and 128 GB versions were priced at Rs. 62,500 and Rs. 74, 000 respectively, this is a major price cut.

It is not uncommon for older versions of phones to witness a drop in price once a new flagship comes out. Similarly, post the launch of iPhone 6s, the drop in price of iPhone 6 isn’t surprising news. The price had began to plummet even before the Apple event on 9th September this year in San Francisco.

If you have been eyeing the iPhone for a while now, this is definitely your chance to grab the opportunity. Knowing how erratic the market as well as the tech world are, it is not likely for these prices to remain low for long.

Motorola India to Offer 2nd Gen Moto E 4G LTE Off the Shelf

In the midst of Chinese vendors threatening to take over Indian markets with their smartphones, Motorola India seems to be upping their game plan. This time they are creating a wider range of offline and online retailers through their distribution partner, Brightstar India for easier and wider access to their handsets.

    Moto e 4g

Some of us, still prefer going to a store and examining a product before availing of it. For this lot, Motorola will for the first time make the 2nd Gen Moto E 4G LTE available off the shelf at select Airtel stores across the country. Along with this, they are also looking towards their e-shoppers and will start offering the Moto E 3G/4G LTE, September 25 onwards, on Amazon India and Snapdeal.

“Consumers are at the heart of whatever we do and we will leave no stone unturned to enhance their buying experiences.” said Mr. Amit Boni, General Manager, Motorola Mobility India.

Oh well, Motorola does seem to be on their toes this season and hopefully they continue to do so.

  • Coolpad’s Dazen 1 Adds Heat to the Flash Sale Fever

Coolpad’s Dazen 1 Adds Heat to the Flash Sale Fever

It all started last year in July when Xiaomi entered the Indian market with a bang. Our country was happily surprised when the Chinese tech company decided to launch the Mi 3, priced at a mere Rs. 13,999. It was the first time, potential Indian buyers were asked to pre-register and patiently wait at a particular time and e-commerce website, to try and buy a smartphone. Flash sales by Xiaomi caused such an uproar that even Flipkart was unable to cope with the traffic. Xiaomi brought the smartphone in small stocks, which only helped increase the enthusiasm of the Indian market to get their hands on the device.

This wildly successful (and frustrating) practice has since been adopted by Asus, Yu, Honor, Micromax and many more companies. The latest one to join in the flash sale madness is Coolpad.

Chinese manufacturer Coolpad had announced that it will be bringing in the Dazen 1, a week back, and it went on sale today at 12pm on Snapdeal. The company claimed that the smartphone had already received over 1 lakh registrations since the window opened.

    coolpad dazen

Keeping up with the trend, this smartphone also comes with high specs at a low price. As a direct competition to Xiaomi Redmi 2, Yu Yuphoria and Moto E Gen 2, the Dazen 1 has been priced at a mere Rs. 6,999.

Specs-wise, the smartphone stocks a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor coupled with 2GB of RAM along with 8GB of built –in storage, which is expandable upto 32GB via a microSD card. The LTE capable phone comes with a 8MP rear camera, and a 5MP front camera. The Dazen 1 is powered by a 2,500mAh battery.

While there were 1 lakh people eagerly waiting to add a device in their digital cart, the company put out only 10,000 pieces on sale. We wish these companies soon realise that week after week, impressing an audience with the news that their “stock was sold out in seconds” will get old. While it may create a temporary hype, potential buyers would rather go for a device which wasn’t using an old marketing gimmick to persuade them.

  • Snapdeal Buys FreeCharge to Strengthen its Stand in the Mobile Commerce Market

Snapdeal Buys FreeCharge to Strengthen its Stand in the Mobile Commerce Market

E-commerce website, Snapdeal, is one of the most prominant players in the market along with Flipkart and Amazon. The company has now announced that it has acquired the mobile payment app, Freecharge. With this move the company hopes to gather more users as well as create new services to extend its offerings.

FreeCharge lets users pay for their mobile recharges, DTH and utility for multiple service providers. Every day 75 million mobile recharges are done in India out of which only 3 Million are done online, so it is definitely a massive market to have captured. While the service providers do provide online payment options, there has been a growth in the number of payment apps in the market.

Speaking on the acquisition, Snapdeal founder, Kunal Bahl said, “The age of monolithic e-commerce platforms is over; it is now time to build an impactful digital commerce ecosystem in India that is multidimensional and inclusive…At Snapdeal we are building an ecosystem that powers billions of digital commerce transactions in the country in the coming years. “

FreeCharge’s founder, Kunal Shah said that their service is at the forefront of the mobile commerce revolution in India. He added that 85% of our transactions originate from mobile, and the user retention of the service is really high.

Following this deal, FreeCharge will continue to operate as an independent service. Snapdeal says that it will collaborate with its new partner to offer innovative services to the users. We’ll get to know more about how Snapdeal will benefit from this deal in the near future.

  • Xiaomi No Longer Exclusive With Flipkart; Partners with Snapdeal and Amazon

Xiaomi No Longer Exclusive With Flipkart; Partners with Snapdeal and Amazon

On the occasion of completing five years Xiaomi announced that it will be joining hands with Snapdeal and Amazon as the company’s distribution partners. This means that along with Flipkart, the Mobile Store and the Bharti Airtel stores, Xiaomi products will soon be available on Snapdeal and Amazon too. We currently don’t have any information about if they’re going to stop the flash sale system just yet, though one thing is for certain – Xiaomi is here to stay.

Manu Jain, India Head of Xiaomi, confirmed the same via a tweet –

Xiaomi entered the Indian market with the Xiaomi Mi3, which was launched on Flipkart in July 2014. Since then, the company has been releasing several handsets via Flipkart through the flash sales.

The company has also come up with a range of offers for its customers in India which will be valid only for a day, i.e., April 8th, from 12 noon to 12 midnight. As per the offers, the Xiaomi Mi 4 will get a price cut of Rs 2,000 on both, the 16GB and the 64GB variant. Buyers who purchase the Redmi Note 4G from online partners, Flipkart, Snapdeal or Amazon, will receive a Mi in-ear headphones for free. If the same is purchased from the Airtel or The Mobile Store, the buyer will receive a 5,200mAh Mi Power Bank for free.

For Snapdeal, this will be a major upgrade as they have lagged behind in bagging exclusive partnerships with major tech brand. Meanwhile, Flipkart already enjoys the exclusive partner status with several smartphones like Motorola, Huawei (Honor series), Lenovo, etc. and Amazon is the exclusive seller of Micromax, Yu Yureka and OnePlus One.
