  • Nvidia Tegra 4 To Ship In May, Project Shield By July

Nvidia Tegra 4 To Ship In May, Project Shield By July

Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huan recently said during the company’s quarterly and yearly earnings call that they did the best work in the company’s history in 2012. The proof is in the revenue which shot up 7.1 percent year over year to a record $4.28 billion.

Quarterly revenue was down 8.1 percent sequentially to $1.11 billion but compared to the same time last year, it was up 16.1 percent. Nvidia also pointed out the fact that they repurchased $100 million in stock and paid a total dividend to shareholders of $46.9 million during the fiscal quarter.

Most important to the company’s growth was the continued success of its Tegra 3 chip, which powered nearly every Android-based tablet in 2012 in addition to Microsoft’s Surface RT tablet.

The company expects its next-generation Nvidia Tegra 4 chip, which is based on ARM’s Cortex-A15 design and has a GPU six times faster than its predecessor, to begin shipping in July. This puts it in consumers’ hands in late July or early August. While this will affects profits for the next two quarters, Nvidia’s CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang, said that he wants to ensure his team can push sufficient volumes upon release.

Nvidia Tegra 4 offers manufacturers plenty of reasons to go with Nvidia for future smartphone and tablet designs, but it faces some stuff competition. Recently, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 has become the standard for most high-end releases, while Samsung will challenge with their Exynos 5 Octa chipset to debut later this year. Any delays in getting Tegra 4 to consumers could hurt Nvidia’s chances of gaining a bigger stake in the mobile industry.

The Nvidia Tegra 4 SoC and Project Shield, a gaming device that will launch “in the latter part of Q2,” likely July or August, aims to challenge Qualcomm and Samsung in the mobile processing business. This may pose a huge challenge as Qualcomm already has a more mature architecture in Krait and has integrated a 28nm LTE baseband in its Snapdragon processors.

Due to a lack of integrated LTE, which Huang acknowledges Nvidia will need “to be successful [in the smartphone business],” 2013 will likely focus on pushing Tegra to the tablet market. “We’ll have some phone success this year, but we don’t expect to have a whole lot of phone design wins until we engage the market with LTE.”

The long time to market may hurt Nvidia in 2013 (Tegra 4 was launched at CES in January), but it’s certainly finding success in the mobile business, and that bodes well for the company’s future in light of a declining PC business where high-end GPUs are becoming more of a niche product. Whether it will be able to compete with Qualcomm in the highly-lucrative smartphone market remains to be seen.

Today, Vizio announced a duo of tablets running stock Android. The first is most similar to the Nexus 10: a 10″ display with the same retina-melting 2560×1600 resolution, only this one is powered by a Tegra 4 processor.

The new Tegra 4 System on a Chip was just unveiled recently in Las Vegas. Tegra calls it “the world’s fastest mobile processor.” Among its features are the following: Cortex A15, four power cores that will have a maximum speed of 1.9GHz plus a companion core, 28nm manufacturing process, and HPL low-power with high-K metal gate.

According to The Verge, the tablet is “much more than your average iPad knockoff.” For one thing, it is noticeably light and thin, which gives the impression that it is smaller than the Nexus 10 or the iPad, two devices which have similar measurements in terms of screen size.

For its operating system, the tablet features stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, that is, without any custom skin overlaid. It also comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity as well as 32GB of internal storage. Two cameras are onboard, as well, although the capacities of their image sensors are still unknown.

The reports coming in from CES haven’t actually mentioned the memory card, but there isn’t much of a chance for such a slot not to be included in the blueprint. Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity are present as well.

The seven-inch Vizio tablet is powered by NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 SoC and has an IPS Display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, 16GB of storage, 1.2-megapixel webcam on the front, and runs stock Android Jelly Bean. Once it will be available the version of the OS will be 4.2.

HTC Will Launch the new portfolio including Windows Phone 8X and 8s for India and Asia Today

    htc wp 8x

We are in Singapore for the launch of the new HTC Windows Phone 8 Devices, including the Windows Phone 8X and the 8S alongside Android devices like the HTC One X Plus. We will get you cover by cover so stay tuned to iGyaan and expect updates on Twitter ( @iGyaan) and Facebook as they happen.

HTC Windows Phone 8X will Be HTC’s flagship running Windows Phone 8 operating system, which was officially released on the 29th of October. It features a completely new approach to Windows Phone 8 Devices with a new polycarbonate unibody design and a list of new bright colors. The HTC Windows Phone 8X features a 1.5 GHz Dual Core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4.3 inch display, 16GB of inbuilt storage and 1GB of RAM. WiFi a/b/g/n, NFC and an integrated 1,800mAh Li-ion battery. There’s also quadband radio support for GSM/GPRS/EDGE, HSPA/WCDMA (850, 900, 1900, 2100MHz) and LTE where available.

The HTC Windows Phone 8S also features similar builds but has a dual tone look. The display is a rather sharp 4-inch, 720p screen. For memory there’s 1GB of RAM and 4GB of onboard storage, with room for an additional 32GB via microSD expansion. That actually puts it above the 8X, which is stuck at 16GB of space thanks to its lack of expandable memory support.

The HTC One X+ (plus) will come with a faster 1.7GHz Tegra 3 CPU, larger 2,100mAh battery, expanded 64GB of storage and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean with Sense 4+ onboard. The One X+ is targeted to replace the One X as a new flagship for Android.

No information on pricing, but all of the above are pegged at a pre Diwali availability. Stay tuned for more information.

  • HTC changing its geometry with the new Vertex Tablet!

HTC changing its geometry with the new Vertex Tablet!

    Whoops! Something went wrong!

We have a new report that sheds more light on this HTC product. Apparently HTC has forgotten all about its past in the tablet market and is planning the HTC Vertex HD, a tablet that has already shown up in benchmark tests.

According to Slashgear, the new tablet will sport a 10.1-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution, 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor, a 2-megapixel rear-facing camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel shooter, Bluetooth 4.0 and Beats Audio support. The device is running Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich right now, although that may change by the time it hits stores.

Speaking about availability details, we don’t have any launch dates or pricing for this new Android device, so we’ll have to wait for HTC and its carrier partners to officially unveil it, or leak more details about it. What’s clear so far is that the device doesn’t appear to be necessarily an iPad contender, but it’s neither an affordable 7-inch device meant to take on the Google Nexus 7.

Could the Vertex be a budget 10-inch tablet? Anyone interested in a new HTC tablet?

  • The New iPad goes through Benchmarks, iPad 3 vs iPad 2 vs Transformer Prime vs Galaxy Tab 10.1

The New iPad goes through Benchmarks, iPad 3 vs iPad 2 vs Transformer Prime vs Galaxy Tab 10.1

During the launch of Apple’s third-gen iPad, the company made huge claims about the performance of the new A5x chip, claiming that the A5X processor with quad-core graphics provided up to 4x the graphics performance of NVIDIA’s Tegra 3 chip and  2x the graphics performance of the iPad 2?s A5 chip.

Benchmark data shows the iPad 2?s A5 chip bettering both the A5X and Tegra 3 with the A5X’s improved graphics being used mostly to power the new iPad’s high-resolution Retina display of 3.1 million pixels.

However when the Screen is in off mode and benchmarks are run, the results of the A5x significantly prove to outperform all remaining devices.

For CPU Tegra 3-powered ASUS Transformer Prime and Galaxy Tab 10.1 scored higher in GeekBench than both the iPads:

Tegra 3?s quad-core configuration blazes past the dual-core A5X, garnering GeekBench scores of 1540 and 750, respectively. Interestingly, the A5X’s average score fell a few points short of the iPad 2?s standard A5 chip, 753. Both the A5X and the A5 also fell shy of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1?s Tegra 2, which received an overall score 905. The gains made by the Tegra 3 are easily chalked up to its two extra cores, but it is also boasts the highest clocking speed of the group at 1.6GHz, compared to the 1GHz clock of the A5X, A5 and Tegra 2.

    IGN

For graphics tests with GLBenchmark, iPad 2 scored higher than the third-gen iPad in both tests.

For the Egypt test, the iPad 2 (1024×768) produced 6,709 frames at a framerate of 59 frames-per-second, while the new iPad (2048×1536) ran 5,974 frames at 53 FPS and the Transformer Prime (1280×800) generated 5,955 at a rate of 52 FPS. The Galaxy Tab 10.1 (1280×800), on the other hand, produced only 2,465 frames at a surprisingly low 21 FPS.

    -IGN

The results of the off-screen tests show the A5X producing 15,412 frames at a rate of 138 FPS compared to the iPad 2 that has 10,143 frames at 90 FPS.
