Toyota Has Patented A ‘Cloaking Device’

From the One Ring to conceal the wearer’s identity to Harry Potter’s disappearing blanket, invisibility has been a fascinating feature of Science Fiction. Scientists have been hard at work to make this technology see the light of day for many years now. Joining the research is Toyota, the Japenese carmaker which has patented a “cloaking device.”

The company recently acquired a patent from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for “Apparatuses and methods for making an object appear transparent,” which Toyota filed on June 17. The company has forayed into the invisibility tech, not to make its cars invisible, but, a part of it at least.

The patent describes the cloaking device designed to turn the A-pillars on the right and left side of the car’s dashboard invisible. The aim to make the pillar invisible is to improve the on-road visibility for the driver. Ironic how making something invisible will improve the visibility on the road, isn’t it? Toyota has said that this is the way to move forward since the A-pillars have become broader to follow crash-safety standards. It’s logical since the wider these pillars are, the more they’ll obstruct the driver’s vision. The cloaking device would use mirrors to bend visible light around the A-pillars to allow the driver to “see” through them. This would give drivers a wider view of the road and their surroundings. It also benefits pedestrians, as drivers would see them better.

Light from an object on an object-side of the cloaking device [i.e., facing the road] is directed around an article [the A-pillars] ]within the cloaking region and forms an image on an image-side of the cloaking device [i.e., facing the driver’s seat] such the article appears transparent to an observer looking towards the object

The way to make things transparent or “invisible” is by manipulating light. Studies around the world currently working on some variant or the other of a possible cloaking device are also trying to do the same. For example, researchers from the Max Planck Institute are working on mimicking the biology of moths’ eyes to turn lenses and glass invisible. All these researches are working on bringing us closer to a technology that can make objects invisible, or at least transparent and Toyota’s venture into the same is proof that a “cloaking device” may just be a few years away from existence.

Audi wins 24 Hours of Le Mans for 4th year running

The #2 Audi R18 e-tron quattro of drivers Tom Kristensen, Allan McNish and Loic Duval came out on top at the 2013 24 Hours of Le Mans this past weekend. The race, largely overshadowed by the death of Danish Aston Martin driver Allan Simonsen, marked Audi’s fourth consecutive and 12th overall victory at Le Mans. The Audi crossed the finish line one lap ahead of the #8 Toyota TS030 driven by  Anthony Davidson, Stephane Sarrazin and Sebastien Buemi.

The race was incredibly close at the end – after 23 straight hours of competition, the leading Audi and Toyota cars were on the same lap before Kristensen was able to pass Sebastien Buemi’s Toyota with just minutes remaining to win by one lap over his rival. This victory also marks Kristensen’s ninth career win at Le Mans, which is an extension of the record he already owned and a remarkable feat on its own. Kristensen dedicated his win to fellow Danish driver Allan Simonsen, who died as a result of injuries sustained on the fourth lap of the race, when his Aston Martin spun off the track and hit the barrier at high speed.

Karun Chandhok returned to Le Mans this year and finished a respectable 13th overall, and 7th in the P2 class in the Murphy Prototypes’ ORECA-Nissan 03 with team regular Brendon Hartley and experienced US sportscar driver Mark Patterson. Last year Chandhok managed an impressive, sixth placed finish overall with the JRM Racing HPD P1 team.

Third place overall was snatched by the No. 3 Audi driven by Lucas Di Grassi, Marc Gene and Oliver Jarvis. In LMP2, Oak Racing’s Nissan-powered Morgan racers came in first and second, followed by G-Drive Racing’s Oreca, also powered by Nissan. The LMGTE Pro class was won by the No. 92 Porsche 911 RSR, followed by the No. 91 Porsche and No. 97Aston Martin Vantage V8. Corvette Racing finished fourth with its No. 73 C6-ZR1 while their fellow Americans from SRT Motorsports finished in eighth and ninth positions in their brand-new Viper GTS-R racers.

  • Toyota Camry Hybrid to be launched in August

Toyota Camry Hybrid to be launched in August

Despite the extremely poor reception to hybrid cars in India (both the Honda Civic and Toyota’s own Prius failed miserably), Toyota has announced that it will launch the Camry Hybrid in August. Toyota believes it can sell around 20-25 Camry Hybrids a month, which makes up around 5-6 percent of total Camry sales. It’s planning to locally assemble the Camry Hybrid in India alongside the 2.4-litre petrol model.

    Camry Hybrid

The Camry Hybrid will get a host of exterior and interior changes to differentiate it from the regular Camry. At the front, it comes with a new bumper having a wider air dam, as well as restyled fog lamps with chrome inserts. The front grille also features a chrome strip. There isn’t anything new about the rear, except for the blue badge that reads ‘Hybrid Synergy Drive’. On the inside, we get a redesigned dashboard and three dials in the instrument cluster. Toyota will also use a different seat fabric to add to the premium feel.

    Camry Hybrid

The 2.5-litre engine, mated to a hybrid powertrain, will see a bump up in power thanks to the use of an electric motor. This engine comes mated to an e-CVT (electronic continuously variable transmission) gearbox. The hybrid powertrain features a water cooled system that reduces the temperature of the exhaust gas and then reroutes this to the intake to control emissions. The system has also been tweaked to increase efficiency by reducing transaxial losses and improving motor control. The car will also have an EV drive mode, with which it can be driven on the electric motor alone for 2.5 km, provided the car doesn’t cross 40 kmph. Toyota will also tweak the chassis a bit to compensate for the extra weight of the electric powertrain.

    Camry Hybrid

Even with all the extra features, an expected price of Rs. 36 Lakh (about Rs. 12 Lakh over the regular Camry) seems too high to attract enough customers. Watch this space for updates on the Toyota Camry Hybrid!

    2014 Toyota Corolla Finally Revealed

The Toyota Corolla is widely known as the best-selling car on the planet and after tons of teasing, the long overdue update has finally been unveiled by Toyota. This is the 2014 Toyota Corolla and it features the new design language, first seen on the Furia Concept, which Toyota calls “Iconic Dynamism.” Likely to be known as the Corolla Altis in India, the car features much sharper styling than its predecessors. In an effort to solve the demerits of a now dated design, Toyota has added nearly 4 inches to the wheelbase. Here are the exact numbers:

Exterior Dimensions (Change compared to current model)

    Overall length

      182.6 in. (+3.90 in.) 183.1 for S-grade

      4639 mm (+99), 4650mm for S-grade

    Overall width

    958 mm (+23)

    Rear Overhang

    38.6 in. (-0.94 in.)

    981 mm (-24)

The newly designed front end is testament to Toyota’s ambition of attracting a younger generation to its 47 year old torch bearer, with its aggressive and sporty styling. A prominent shoulder line, the kink in the window line and heavily creased bumpers remain from the Furia concept, adding character to the previously demure image of the Corolla. The wraparound tail-lamps are sharper and the presence of the Furia’s modern, tightly stretched skin is also evident. We wish more attention had been paid to the uninspiring rear end, but have no doubt that the 2014 Corolla’s new image is a very welcome change.

Internationally, engine choices will consist of two 1.8-liter four-cylinder units. One will offer dual VVT-i technology – where the valve timing on both the intake and exhaust are infinitely variable – and will produce 132 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. The other, more efficient version will utilise Toyota’s new Valvematic technology to put out 140 horses and 126 lb-ft of torque. It is not known right now if the Valvematic engine will make its way to India, but the 1.4-litre diesel engine currently offered in the country is expected to be available as well. With the new CVTi-S automatic, Toyota claims a “17 kpl estimated highway fuel economy” with the Eco trim. The CVTi-S also offers a sport mode, which alters shift points and the power steering. With the S model, paddle shifters will also be part of standard equipment on the car. Apart from the new CVT, the base model Corolla L will be offered with a four-speed automatic transmission or a six-speed manual transmission, which is also available in the Corolla S in case you prefer either to paddle shifters for changing your Corolla’s gears.

The S model comes with 17-inch wheels and ventilated disc brakes on all wheels, whereas the base model is equipped with 15-inch wheels with rear drums, however “Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist” will come as standard, as will the Smart Stop Technology brake-override system and the electronic tire pressure monitoring system.

All new interiors make the 2014 Corolla a much nicer place to be than the outgoing model. Official pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but we’ll be sure to update you when Toyota shares any more information about the new Corolla. • Facelifted 2014 Toyota Corolla Teased Ahead of June 6th Unveiling

Facelifted 2014 Toyota Corolla Teased Ahead of June 6th Unveiling

Toyota has revealed teaser photos of the next generation Corolla, which will be unveiled on June 6. The unveiling will take place at a special event in California, USA. Based on the striking Furia concept car showcased at the Detroit motor show in January, the 2014 Corolla has been specifically designed to appeal to a younger audience.

The first and most significant of the teaser images are of the LED headlamps which give us an idea of the overall look of the car. The design does not resemble previous renderings of the car and seems much more aggressive. The current Corolla in India features HID (High intensity discharge) headlights for the top-end models and it seems like this will be improved upon in the new car. The teaser shots also capture 17-inch alloy wheels and a touchscreen audio system. Other images reveal an aggressively designed bumper, and what seems to be a new taillight design.

It is believed the new Corolla will adopt an updated 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine linked to a six-speed manual gearbox or a rather dated four-speed automatic for the lower-spec versions, while a CVT will be available for the more premium variants. It’s scheduled to go on sale before the end of the year and will probably be offered in four trims: base, LE, S and Eco. The interior cabin is set to receive “Softex” leather, push-button ignition and GPS navigation.

Autogyaan : A Look At The Toyota Corolla Furia Concept

Like Fashion Week, the New York International Automobile Show is no stranger to starting trends and shaping opinions, so it is no surprise that the world’s automakers have pulled out all the stops to show off some of the most amazing concept cars and trucks ever seen at this year’s event.

With an emphasis on new styling, technology and the environment, this year’s stunning new concept cars offer a glimpse into the future, and perhaps a look at what we might be driving in the years ahead. One of them is the Toyota Corolla Furia Concept.

    Toyota Corolla Furia

The Toyota Corolla Furia concept “hints at the styling cues consumers can expect to see on the next-generation Corolla,” the automaker said in a statement. The concept’s styling is a dramatic departure from the current Corolla, which has seen few consequential changes to its conservative appearance in recent years while, at the same time, a design upheaval has taken place in the segment with the debut of new versions of the Hyundai Elantra and Ford Focus.

The Toyota Corolla Furia Concept has a striking face with narrow headlights, vertical marker lights and a massive eight-sided grill, while its short hood and raked windshield give it a more modern look like the Civic and Mazda3. The front is overly stylized, similar to what we see on the new Camry and Avalon. Based on the most recent teaser we saw for this concept, the rear of the car will be equally sporty and modern with arrow-shaped LED taillights.

    Toyota Corolla Furia

The rear diffuser with integrated chrome exhaust finishers give the Furia a sporty appearance, while the 19-inch alloy wheels are pushed to the corners to help add visual width.

Comparing the specs of the concept to the current Corolla, the Furia is only about two inches longer and wider, but it also sits lower and has a wheelbase that is almost four inches longer.

It would be nice to see these features in the next version of the Corolla here in India!

Toyota Fortuner With 5-speed AT Launched At Rs 22.33 lakh

    fortuner

The Toyota Fortuner has had a sensational run in India selling more than 41,000 examples. In fact, Toyota understood the market very well and refreshed the Fortuner long before it was overdue and the numbers are getting better with each passing year.

The face-lifted version launched at the Auto Expo 2012 along with the automatic transmission option only brought more customers into the showrooms. Now, just a year after its launch owing to customer feedback, Toyota has introduced a five-speed auto transmission in the Fortuner, replacing the earlier 4-speed unit. While figures haven’t been quoted by Toyota, we expect the fuel efficiency of the 5-speed slush box to be more than that of the outgoing 4-speed one.

Other than that, the limited edition Sportivo edition launched last year is now a regular grade as also is the Pearl White Mica colour. Prices for the entire line up ex-Delhi are as follows: Rs 22.3 lakh for the 4×2 AT (5 speed), Rs 22.93 lakh for the 4×2 AT TRD Sportivo (5 speed) and Rs 21.96 lakh for the MT TRD Sportivo. Bookings will open from January 18.

     [quote]

Commenting on the new introduction Mr. Sandeep Singh, Deputy Managing Director and Chief Operating Office –

The 4×2 automatic transmission is extremely popular, it has been highly appreciated by the customers. The 5 speed AT will further add to the drive quality and comfort. Looking at the overwhelming response for the Fortuner TRD Sportivo and its popularity, we have now regularized this grade for all those looking for a unique sporty image. The bookings will open starting 18th Jan 2013.
