Make in India: List of Tech Companies to Start Manufacturing in India

‘Make in India’ is an initiative that was started back in September 2014 by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi. The primary objective of this initiative is to create manufacturing firms within India to create more job opportunities and enhance the skills of the people of India across different sectors like automobile, aviation, biotechnology, defence manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, ports, railways, textile and much more. With this initiative, the Government of India hopes to bring in high-quality standards and minimise the impact on the environment.

Many companies are in support of the Make in India campaign. Companies from China like Alibaba and Xiaomi showed their full backing for the project. Alibaba Chairman said, “We are excited about India. We are excited about Make in India and Digital India.” Xiaomi President Lin Bin too, showed his support and stated, “We have some big plans for India. We fully support Make in India.”

In response to the Make in India call, The United Kingdom announced in January, about its campaign to forge collaborations with Indian companies. Dubbed as the ‘Great Collaboration’, it will be the first partnership between UK’s BP Petroleum company and India’s Reliance Industries Limited for developing and producing energy. The UK and the Indian Prime Ministers have already appreciated the financial ties between the two countries.

Many companies have started putting up manufacturing houses in India. Celkon, one of the leading cellphone players, is right now in the planning process of setting up its manufacturing firm in Medchal, Telangana. IT Minister, KT Rama Rao, said the manufacturing business unit will be set up within a few days after June and will begin with four production lines, and will eventually increase its capacity to higher levels.

Similarly, Foxconn Technology, who is one of the world’s largest contract makers of electronic products, is trying to develop 10-12 facilities in India, including factories by 2020. The Taiwan-based tech giant said that the company is in talks to manufacture Apple iPhones in India. This could lower the price on the world’s No.3 smartphone market where the US firm trails Samsung Electronics and local players.

Mercedes-Benz will be doubling its annual capacity in India to 20,000 units, thanks to the Make in India project. India will also be the first market to receive the GLA entry SUV outside of Germany.
“India is one of the focus markets for Mercedes-Benz internationally, and with the addition of a new plant, we are getting future ready,” said company India MD & CEO Eberhard Kern. The plant was inaugurated by Maharastra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union environment minister Prakash Javadekar. With the addition of the GLA SUV to the assembly line, the company now makes six models locally which include C-, E-, S-Class sedans and the ML- and GL-Class SUVs. The CLA entry sedan will be added to the local assembly list later this year while the A- and B-Class models come in after that.

On a smaller scale, Amity scientists have developed a 100% safe, pure and indigenous herbal colours with absolutely no synthetic or harmful additives, in a bid to contribute towards Modi’s ‘Make in India’ initiative. “The herbal colours indigenously produced at Amity, when used extensively in all the industries, will herald a revolution in the country, which is reeling under the pressure of products loaded with synthetic components and chemicals,” said Harsha Kharkwal, faculty at Amity University.

In February 2015, Huawei opened a new research and development (R&D) campus in Bengaluru. It had invested $170 million to establish the research and development centre. In February 2015, Hitachi said it was committed to the initiative. It said that it would raise its employees in India from 10,000 to 13,000, and it would try to boost its revenues from India from ¥100 billion in 2013 to ¥210 billion. It said that an auto component plant will be set up in Chennai in 2016.

This initiative looks very promising. It is understandable that many more companies will join in, soon. This can create a lot of job opportunities here in India and improve the economic well-being of its masses.

Let us see how the campaign shapes up in the future.

  • Things You Should Know About Xiaomi

Things You Should Know About Xiaomi

When it first started off in 2010, this company did not expect that five years down the line, it would would become one of the biggest smartphone companies globally. Yes, Xiaomi had taken the tech world by surprise when they released the Xiaomi Mi series lineup, capable of holding its own ground against Apple or Samsung smartphones. Additionally, Google had lost one of its top Android executives, Hugo Barra, to an ‘unknown Chinese smartphone company’ in 2013. Yes, he was headed to Xiaomi as the Vice President of Xiaomi Global, also dubbed as ‘Apple of the East’ by New York Times.

    History

Xiaomi was initially started by Mr. Jun Lei and seven more partners on April 6th, 2010. Initial investors included Temasek Holdings, an investment office from Singapore, and Chinese venture capital funds IDG Capital and Qiming Venture Partners. After Mobile Processor developer, Qualcomm, joined hands with Xiaomi, the smartphone company launched the first Android-based user-interface, MIUI. Xiaomi’s Mi1 smartphone was announced immediately next year, and since then there was no turning back.

    Rise of the Name

After three and a half years of entering the market, Xiaomi had employed a small number of 2,400 staff and sold its wares only in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Despite the limited market, Xiaomi managed to sell more than 7 million devices 2012. It is quite an impressive feat, keeping in mind that it was around the same time that Nokia and BlackBerry were struggling to reach up to the same number worldwide.

The expansion campaign did not stop just there. Xiaomi unveiled its second high-end phone, Xiaomi Mi2, in August 2012, and it sold 10 million devices in the next 11 months. In total, Xiaomi sold over 18.7 million smartphones in 2013 and 26.1 million smartphones in 2014.

Lei Jun, founder and Chief Executive Officer of China's mobile company Xiaomi, shows Mi Notes at its launch in Beijing January 15, 2015.
Lei Jun, founder and Chief Executive Officer of China’s mobile company Xiaomi, shows Mi Notes at its launch in Beijing January 15, 2015.

It opened its first international expansion outside with their first destination in Singapore. On its Opening day, Xiaomi Mi3 batches were sold off within two minutes. Apart from Singapore, Xiaomi had also landed in the markets of Malaysia, Philippines and India. Xiaomi entered the Indian market via an exclusive retail partnership with Flipkart and offline retailers for the first time.

In April 2014, Xiaomi purchased a new domain- mi.com for $3.6 million. It became the most expensive domain name ever bought in China and it replaced xiaomi.com as the official website for Xiaomi.

    Idea behind the Success

What separates Xiaomi from other smartphone companies is that the company sells its products at a cost that has virtually no profit margin. So, how does the company make a profit? It makes its money when customers pay for its cloud services like messaging and data backup. The company also pointed out its iconoclastic business model which instead of using traditional marketing and distribution practices, it heavily relies on the Internet to fuel its sales, thus reducing advertising and promotional costs.

Xiaomi Mi 4i was the first Xiaomi phone to see its initial release outside of China

Another reason the handset is so much cheaper than its competitors is because of the weekly/monthly Flash Sales. Releasing only a small quantity of phones per sale keeps down the production cost. But the only drawback is that eager customers have to wait, thus leading to a loss in sales.

    redmi-note
In a Singapore flash sale, Xiaomi sells 5,000 Redmi Note units in 42 seconds.

To make up for its thin line profit margin, Xiaomi continues to sell the same phones for a long period of time, rather than coming out with a new handset every six months. This gives more flexibility with profits and ensures the sale of accessories too.

Here is a fun fact: Apart from its own website, the company also sells devices on Tmall.com, one of China’s largest online retail sites. Xiaomi not only sells its handsets here, but also sells accessories like headphones, T-Shirts and its toy rabbit mascots. The company claims it sold over 180,000 units of mascots in 2012 alone!

    Controversies

With great success, criticism and controversies are sure to follow. Xiaomi’s first controversy was the similarity in the design of its products and Apple products. If this weren’t enough, Xiaomi CEO, Lei Jung cultivated a Steve Job image after reading his about him in college. Thus, Xiaomi was accused by Apple for copying their philosophy and mindset. Xiaomi stated that it followed a different set of principles. While many pointed out the similarities between the two companies, few others said the ability to customize the software based on user preferences sets Xiaomi apart.

    apple xiaomi

In India, import and export of Xiaomi’s products were banned on December 9th 2014. This was because of a complaint filed by Ericsson. Ericsson had alleged earlier this month that Xiaomi was selling Mediatek chipset powered smartphones through the site Xiaomishop.com. Ericcson claimed it  to be a violation of the interim order of the Delhi High Court that allowed the company to sell only Qualcomm chipset based smartphones. Xiaomi, in turn, told the court that the site was not an authorized seller of its products.

    Conclusion

Today, Xiaomi is the 3rd largest smartphone distributor. Many Chinese companies sprung up after the success story of Xiaomi across the world, with Huawei creating real impact with visible success. Along with controversies surrounding it, it will be interesting to see how Xiaomi copes in the global market. We will just have to wait and watch.

  • Xiaomi Launches Internet Finance Unit to Compete with Alibaba and Tencent

Xiaomi Launches Internet Finance Unit to Compete with Alibaba and Tencent

The widely popular Chinese electronics manufacturer Xioami is making headway into the finance sector with the launch of a new product service. Termed as ‘Huoqi Bao’, the newly launched personal finance service will offer deposit rates higher than the traditional Chinese banks. The recently inaugurated financial unit by Xiaomi pits it against the big players in the online finance arena like Alibaba, Tencent and Baidu.

The China’s Apple has collaborated with a fund management company called E Fund Management that, as per Xiaomi, will expand into offering personal lending and security brokerage in the near future. The Huoqi Bao service will be accessible via an app bundled with Xiaomi’s operating system.

Xiaomi Co-Founder Hong Feng said in a statement –

We’re aiming to build a smart platform to help financial partners find high quality clients, while helping our users earn money and borrow money.

China’s two biggest internet companies, Tencent and Alibaba, have established themselves in such a short span of time. Xiaomi aims to follow the footprints of the firms and provide investors with higher growth rates and cash-on-demand service. As per Reuters report, the world’s third largest smartphone brand has recently “generated annualized returns on deposits of 4.5 percent.”

Alibaba’s financial arm Yu’E Bao was reported to have assets of worth 578 billion yuan ($93 billion) by end 2014. The E Fund Management is not exclusive to Xiaomi only and will also provide services to the Tencent’s Licaitong.

  • Xiaomi Fans Shouldn’t Expect a SD Card Slot on Future Flagships: Hugo Barra

Xiaomi Fans Shouldn’t Expect a SD Card Slot on Future Flagships: Hugo Barra

You must have noticed that high-end smartphones from Xiaomi doesn’t offer MicroSD card support, except the first-gen handset. Many top smartphone brands like HTC, LG, Samsung offer expandability option up to 128GB (which surprisingly Samsung decided to skip this time in the latest Galaxy S6 series), but the China-based electronics firm is against its inclusion on their handsets. Xiaomi’s Hugo Barra remarked that its devotees shouldn’t expect a SD card slot on the future flagships.

Xiaomi’s Vice President of International, Hugo Barra said in a statement –

For high performance devices, we are fundamentally against an SD card slot. It is a trend: SD cards will disappear. You should basically not expect SD card slots in any of our flagships.

He just didn’t make a statement but also backed his verdict on ditching SD card slots. According to Hugo, his team doesn’t want to sacrifice battery capacity and ergonomics for extended content storage. The microSD cards is of no good to the device and adversely affects the functionality of the phone. As per Hugo’s description microSD cards “are incredibly prone to failure and malfunctioning of various different sorts.”

140722-xiaomi-mi-band-05Explaining in fine detail how SD cards ruin the overall functionality of the phone –

You think you’re buying like a Kingston or a SanDisk but you’re actually not, and they’re extremely poor quality, they’re slow, they sometimes just stop working, and it gives people huge number of issues, apps crashing all the time, users losing data, a lot of basically complaints and customer frustration. It’s gonna be a while before you finally accept that maybe the reason why it’s not performing is because you put in an SD card, right? You’re gonna blame the phone, you’re gonna blame the manufacturer, you’re gonna shout and scream and try to get it fixed, so many different ways until you say, ‘Actually, let me just take the SD card out and see what happens.

From this, it can be concluded that the upcoming Xiaomi flagships will not have an option of removable battery too. Since removable back only sorts the purpose when you have to put a second card slot.

The lack of an SD card is not likely to create a stir in Xiaomi-ruled markets. The company releases smartphones with sufficient memory space, but for folks who choose lesser space handsets to add an SD card later will surely be disappointed. For now, Redmi series handsets sport expandability option.

There have been news of Xiaomi’s next flagship coming in two variants – Mi 5 And Mi 5 Plus. The latter one is, no doubt, inspired by Apple’s iPhone 6 Plus.

  • Xiaomi’s Q1 Earnings May Not be as Good as You Think

Xiaomi’s Q1 Earnings May Not be as Good as You Think

Lately, Xiaomi has been in the news for all the good reasons. They’re constantly announcing high-speced affordable smartphones and earnings that are constantly on a rise. But seems like the good days of the company may be over played. The Chinese equipment manufacturer that took over Apple’s sales on its home ground a while back, is now witnessing a steep decline in its revenue.

Ben Bajarin from the market research firm Creative Strategies revealed the quarterly sales of Xiaomi. The figure shown below depicts a decline in the Q1 2015 from the last quarter of 2014.

According to the statement by Ben Bajarin, Xiaomi sold a total of 100 million handsets, which is less than its previous records. One of the major reasons for lesser business for the Chinese tech giant is the supply shortage. The flash sale model adopted by the company has worked both in its favour and against. When the company’s supply does not meet the demand, interested buyers begin looking for other options.

There is a possibility that the latest Mi phone may help recover the revenue. The new Xiaomi Mi 4i consists of the Mi 4 parts, which are easily available in the market. Their supply chain is expected to achieve an overall boost by this, consequently helping Xiaomi build its sales numbers. Let’s hope Xiaomi pays heed to these figures, and increases its units in the future.

Xiaomi Flaunts 3 Lakh Mi 4i Registrations; No Word on the Number of Units Up for Sale

When Xiaomi took the veil off its latest, affordable smartphone Mi 4i in India, it was speculated to have record sales. Going by the presumption, the device has garnered huge registrations for the flash sale to be held on April 30. The handset reported over 3 lakh applications in a mere four days period.

Xiaomi India Head Manu Jain confirmed the same via Twitter –

At the launch event held on April 23, the Chinese electronics firm mentioned that users need to register on the e-commerce website Flipkart to participate in the sale. The registration process is done simply via a three step process.

Xiaomi hasn’t mentioned the number of devices going up for sale and users need to be online before the sale time (April 30, 2 pm) to grab the product. In the past, we have seen Xiaomi pushing 40,000-50,000 units of devices. Therefore, this time it is expected to release units close to the earlier figures. Those who haven’t registered yet can do it here.

  • Xiaomi Wants to Become an Indian Company, Says Company CEO Lei Jun

Xiaomi Wants to Become an Indian Company, Says Company CEO Lei Jun

Xiaomi has exhibited many a times how important India is as a marketplace for the Chinese electronics manufacturer. It has set up an R&D centre in Bangalore (India), launched a warehouse and is showing interest to invest in Indian start-ups. The China’s Apple is now planning to begin local manufacturing in India and is reportedly in talks to set up a plant, as per Economic Times.

The Founder and CEO of Xiaomi Lei Jun said in a statement –

The most important market for us in 2015 is India. We want to become an Indian company. So, we want to build an R&D team, manufacture phones, set up data centre in India and invest in ecosystem companies in India.

He further disclosed the company has a team working on local manufacturing project. It is in conversation with its partners along with the government of two nations. Xiaomi wishes to make it happen as early as possible, but all this would take up to two years. The unit yet to establish in India will initially assemble the devices.

    xiaomi mi 4i

The electronics start-up which emerged in 2010 has become a customer favourite all over world. The devices offered by the firm come with considerable specifications and a reasonable price tag. It now stands neck and neck with notable electronics players like Apple, Samsung, HTC and more who are in the smartphone game since long.

Recently, the world’s third-largest smartphone producer conveyed that its goal is to become an Internet giant, not a handset dealer.
