Exclusive Hands on : Micromax A116 Canvas HD

With really no reason as to why the company numbered this device A116 the Canvas HD was announced today at a press conference in New Delhi. The Device is a add on the the popular A series for Micromax and is also a lead on to the highly popular A110 Canvas 2. The Phone is priced at an MRP of 14,999., But we expect the device to be available for around the Rs. 12,000 price mark in India.

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD is powered by a Mediatek MT6589 chipset that has a quad core 1.2 GHz processor and PowerVR SGX5 GPU, the device is laden with 1 GB of RAM and 4 GB of storage. The front has a nice and vivid 16.7 Million color 5 inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280 x720 hence the Canvas HD moniker.

The Micromax A116 Canvas HD is almost identical in design to the the A110 but seems a bit sleeker and more defined along the edges. The camera was non functional on the prototype unit that we handled, but the company says is better than the one on the A110. The Canvas HD also has an improved light perfonce in the front camera and an enhanced speaker if Micromax is to be believed. On the Benchmark front we found that the device was quite capable and was able to deliver a knocking performance (video soon).

Internet browsing was surprisingly smooth, and the web page was snappily laid out on the poor internet connection that we had. The phone is also backed by Mediatek’s promise of a highly efficient battery life and low heat generation. Which should ensure a good overall user experience for Micromax A116 Canvas HD owners.

Can anyone say…..MMX had a bad past regarding its low quality hardware in its charging port specifically….So, how it is in Canvas HD…is it improved….or still remain a bad quality charging port…. pls give a solid review…..bcoz no doubdt this phone has shaken the whole market than any other phone does :)

I have ordered Micromax canvas hd A116 and it is expected to be delivered around 15th march. I am a big gaming fan. but there is a issue with the less internal memory capacity in a116 as we have only upto 1.77 gb to install apps and games. So my biggest concern is that i wont able to play heavy games like nova3 and asphalt7. So is micromax looking for any solution for this problem by making it possible to install games directlly on sd card by proper rooting?? If micromax will solve this issue then it will be the great news for all the possible buyers.

I purchased Micromax A110 canvas2 and I got touch problem in that I went to service center and it stopped working. I did whole replacement procedure there and then submitted DOA (form used for replacement) form to shopkeeper and I did whole procedure at 19th of Jan 2013 and till today I am waiting for my Micromax a110 replacement piece… It’s been more than a month…

I also mailed all the details (Bill and DOA copy) to Micromax official mail ID and they replied me in a good way but there is no result.. They told me they gave all the details to their service team, and after that I didn’t get a single progress mail….
Now I believe to buy a Micromax is a big risk even today….

    @TanmayKale Yup for sure MMX is clear winner and i don’t have any doubt in that…But we were predicting a price tag 13k for Karbonn Titanium as seen on many tech portals and it came around 11k…so it’s possible that MMX A116 may come around 13k to surprise us…

I also want to appreciate the micromax for launching their first quad core phone with the very good specs. I was waiting for such phone that will have good ram, display and fast processor.   it means that if you have inserted two sim in phone(eg: one for calling and sms and the other one for internet) then when your using internet from second sim the first sim will be paused for the time and people who are calling you on the first sim will receive a msg dat “the Sim is out of reach or switched off”.
  You get two types in dual sim, one is dual active and other is dual standby.
  You should always look for phone with dual active, bt for me i really don’t care if its dual standby or active.
  I have never used dual sim till now n will never use.
  I m only going to buy this phone for its other features except the dual sim one.
  So if your buying this phone, specifically for dual sim then rather go with some other, bt u ll nt find this kind of package with ANY OTHER BRAND.
  Frankly, i think this is the best budgeted overall phone to ever buy @ dis price.

Hey @Bharat Nagpal I have one dout in my mind that as this phone is named as canvas hd and not the canvas 3 I have a very high expection from micromax. and if it’s not the canvas 3 then any idea about it as i can expect like a 13mp shooter with all sensor golnos gorila glass more internal storage and more external storage LTE more batter like 2600mah++ price wont matter me plz a reply is must other opinions are welcomed

  @NipunGoel The diff. b/w the mediatek processors and the exynos processors is that mediatek as a processor company is providing micromax with its chipsets and processors to power their devices. While exynos is a processor exclusively made by Samsung, and which they use in their devices like the S3 and the Note2. The company is making these processors exclusively for Samsung devices only like the apple’s A series processors.

Igyaan always comes first when it comes to technology so please help me out on this one…I just want to know if micromax or any other indian brand will release a SUPER AMOLED Phablet with theese specs like quad core,1gb ram and the sgx544 gpu … I want to buy a new phone in the first week of april itself… So please give me some idea of what i should be expecting … Im a big fan of super amoled… and Also the company said it will release 30 phones this year… So will they release a phablet better than the canvas a116 by the time.. with better specs or with SUPER AMOLED? Also super amoled has vivid colours but i heard that the micromax super amoled is only 256k colours which defeats the real purpouse of super amoled display saturation.. so is a 16m colours ips display better than a 265k super amoled display…? Bharat, I asked you this on a YouTube comment as well, but does the A116 not have dual active SIM? Are you sure about that? Or could it only be like that on the prototype?! I’m quite curious.

    @anujjaju Oh, I’m pretty sure it has dual SIM. I meant active SIM, where you can receive calls from one SIM if you’re already engaged on a call on the other SIM.

what would be its price tag?
and Bharat, what do you really feel, is micromax competent enough in hardware quality as compared to other phones in the market, like samsung, sony, etc?…because offering such devices at such low cost, so are there any compromises done on the quality, in any sort? be it voice quality?
also, please do tell, that how is the call conversation on the phone, how does the microphone and the earpiece work?
i am soo inquisitive because the specs look quite tempting, with 1 gb ram and a quardcore processor, with a jelly bean os, it should work quite amazing. is it worth investing in it…?

    @Bharat Nagpal but do u think it get more success than MMX A110. 15k is not just a small amount. In 15k other great devices are there? so do u think it is better to buy other than the Nokia, Samsung or Sony 15k budget phones?

I only hope and pray they sort out the AGPS issue and stop fooling customers with regards to this feature. The A90, although a good phone lacks the same.
