  • Infinite Loop – The Accesory With Infinite Uses

Infinite Loop – The Accesory With Infinite Uses

Tim Gushue, an engineer and designer, has created an accessory that he calls the Infinite Loop. It is basically an extensible, multipurpose stand for tablets and smart-phones, which can be bent into any shape and holds onto a device via suction cups. He plans to develop a series of accessories for the Infinite Loop including clip on speakers, a USB module and a camera screw thread adaptor.

The device is composed of co-molded metal and plastic and comes in two flavours. There is the two foot long ‘mini-loop’ and the standard four foot long ‘Infinite Loop’. The flexibility and adjustability of the Infinite Loop makes it compatible with virtually all tablets on the market today including the iPad, Playbook, and Galaxy Tab as well as most e-book readers like the Kindle and the Nook. The Mini Loop is compatible with all of Apple’s ‘touch’ products including the iPod and the iPhone as well as virtually any smart-phone that you can stick a suction cup to.

The device as a whole has been designed for a vast number of uses and its flexible nature means that it can be bent into a variety of shapes. The design is also modular, so multiple Infinite Loops can be joined together to create a larger stand/holder. When not in use, the Loop can be rolled up into a compact circle.

  • Concrete Lego – Add Some Realism To Your Buildings

Concrete Lego – Add Some Realism To Your Buildings

Lego, one of the greatest toys ever invented, has blocks made of shiny plastic that make your creations look quite bright and unreal. Etsy seller Studio 1015, has done the obvious and has started making Lego style blocks out of concrete. If you plan to make a huge creation, it will work out quite expensive as they will sell you 6 blocks for a whopping $8.50 plus shipping.

Due to the nature of concrete, the blocks don’t have the tolerances of plastic Lego, and so will not snap together like the real stuff. It might be cool to mix them in with the regular stuff but what we’re wondering is if this can be scaled up to revolutionize the construction industry?

  • A New Hybrid Heatsink Makes Your Computer Run Faster

A New Hybrid Heatsink Makes Your Computer Run Faster

The traditional way with which most computers deal with heat is a heat-sink and a fan assembly over the processor. Of course you have custom solutions like liquid cooling, but they’re out of the budget for most people. Unfortunately, this idea is quite dated and hails from the heydays of computing. New technology requires new solutions and that’s exactly what Jeff Koplow, a researcher at Sandia National Laboratories has developed.

The problem with traditional heat-sinks is that, while the fins provide adequate surface area to cool the processor, a layer of air clings to the fins, which reduces efficiency, acting as an insulator. To compensate, the CPU fan can be cranked up to move more air, but that becomes noisy and uses more energy. As the heat-sink itself doesn’t move, it becomes a great place for dust to settle.

Jeff has come up with an ‘air bearing heat exchanger’, which is just a fancy way of saying that he’s combined the heat-sink and fan into a spinning heat-sink. The heat exchanger is separated from the processor by just 1/1000th of an inch, and as it spins, it forces air out from the center of the exchanger, cooling the fins and eliminating the insulating layer of air. This turns out to be so efficient, that it can be run at much lower and quieter speeds. You can even overclock your CPU a few notches without it being any worse for the wear. As the heat-sink is spinning, it also becomes immune to dust.

A prototype has been developed which doesn’t require any fancy metals or electronics, just good design. This hopefully means that the technology will be easily mass producible and will be available to the market soon.

  • The Machine That Prints Gadgets

    The Machine That Prints Gadgets

This monstrous machine has been dubbed the MBE and its named after the process that it uses to assemble objects at the molecular level. The process, called molecular beam epitaxy, is the method by which tiny crystalline structures are layered together to form objects. The process is similar to 3D printing, but works on a molecular level.

With this particular MBE, Sharp researchers at the company’s Oxford Labs in England use a plethora of sensors and magnetic arrays to piece together molecular sized Lego blocks to assemble electronics. The machine works in an environment that is similar to the vacuum of outer space.

As crazy as it sounds, these machines have been around since the 1960s and this particular MBE is one of the smallest to date. Check out the researchers detailing the machine in the video below.

Researchers at MIT Develop Foldable and Printable Solar Cells

Scientists at MIT have developed a new technique for creating solar cells. The process doesn’t require the high temperature and pressure treatment that regular cells require, bringing the cost down significantly. They have used a vapor deposition process which is similar to the process used to give the silver lining to the inside of a bag of potato chips, and were able to print an array of working photovoltaics to a sheet of untreated paper, plastic and even cloth.

This breakthrough technology cant be used to power too many things just yet as the cells work at only one percent efficiency. Despite this bottleneck, the cells provide many advantages over traditional silicone based photovoltaics, namely, they are flexible, in both physical terms as well as the materials used, and they are much much cheaper to manufacture. Don’t go looking for these on the market just yet though. They should be available in a couple of years.

McAfee today announced the it is extending its mobile device portfolio for consumers with McAfee Mobile Security and McAfee WaveSecure Tablet Edition.  These mobile device offerings change the mobile security landscape by offering security safeguards that help consumers secure their mobile devices for personal use, commerce and work.

According to a mobile security report released last week by McAfee and Carnegie Mellon University titled, “Mobility and Security: Dazzling Opportunities, Profound Challenges,” respondents named their top three security concerns to be the loss of personal or work data through the accidental loss of a device, physical theft of the device, or loss of their data due to their device “crashing.” In addition, close to half of all respondents said they were using their smartphones both for personal use and work, demonstrating that consumers want more than just personal device security.

McAfee Mobile Security software, available for both smartphones and tablets, provides a comprehensive mobile security solution by combining three leading McAfee mobile security products:  WaveSecure, VirusScan Mobile and SiteAdvisor® for Android. It is ideal for users who want protection for their data and privacy in the event of loss or theft, protection against the growing threats of viruses and spyware targeting mobile devices as well as protection from Web based threats, such as phishing sites that probe for personal and sensitive information.

With McAfee Mobile Security, consumers can now access the following features and functionality in a single download:

    • Back-up and restore data to help protect sensitive information and irreplaceable photos. Even if the device is missing, it can be backed up before it is wiped clean of information.
    • Protection against misuse (such as excessive phone charges) as well as safeguarding personal data with remote locking capabilities
    • An audible alarm to help users find the device or disrupt a thief, and or pop-up a notification with instructions for returning the device
    • Remotely remove data from a lost or stolen device via the McAfee Web portal, mobile Web portal or via a SMS message from a buddy device

  • Biometric ATM Uses Fingerprints Instead of a PIN

Biometric ATM Uses Fingerprints Instead of a PIN

Using an ATM is pretty straightforward for most of us. But that might not be the case with people who are illiterate/semi-literate. It makes it a lot harder for such people to use the machine, but a new machine is looking to change all that.

As banks look to expand to rural areas in the developing world, universal literacy cant be assumed, so an ATM machine is required that doesn’t need people to be able to read. NRC Corp’s machine fits the bill. It identifies people using a biometric fingerprint scanner and then allows them to choose the amount that they would like with suitable pictures on the screen. This makes it easier for a illiterate person to withdraw money and removes the barriers that they face with traditional ATMs.

At the moment, the machines are being tested in the US, but the company hopes that it passes the tests soon before being installed in rural areas of India and China.
