Hands On | Sony Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium

Sony might have been getting flak for being slow on innovation for the past few years. However, with the launch of the new Sony Xperia Z5 Premium along side the more mainstream Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 compact, the Japanese giant is ready to set the record straight.

The Sony Xperia Z5 Premium is the worlds first 4k display equipped smartphone. Sony has also included a new fingerprint scanner at an innovative location, right on the power button. The fingerprint scanner makes it easy to unlock the device efficiently, its quick and very accurate, making it a pleasure to use.

Sony has not done much about the design apart from adding a matte finish on the Z5 and a ultra glossy finish on the Z5 Premium which will be available in Gold or Chrome. The remaining  design is based on the use of metal as a structure and Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and back of all the devices.

    Sony Xperia Z5 Premium 29

The premium with its 5.5 inch display is just a bit bigger and comfortable for most and also sits in the same size dimensions as the iPhone 6 Plus. Th rounded metal frame feels great and easy to hold.

    Sony Xperia Z5 Premium 44

The 23MP camera is an immense pleasure to use, with the dedicated shutter button. Images are captured quickly and look sharp, especially thanks to the 4k display. The in body image stabalization that we were able to test also looks fantastic.

While most of the interface is still designed like olden Sony Timescape, the UI is fast and responsive and looks glorious on the UHD display. Android 5.1.1 is pre-installed and will be updated frequently and promptly promises Sony.

The front of the device also houses- boom sound style dual stereo speakers which is nice and loud. The audio is crisp and well balanced.

Sony has been able to truly capture our attention with the launch of these new handsets, but do we really need a 4k display smartphone and how will it affect the battery life? These are almost the same questions we asked at the time of QHD display. Stay tuned for our Review on the Xperia Z5 and Z5 premium soon and check out the spec sheet below:

  • Top 5 Android Marshmallow Features

    Top 5 Android Marshmallow Features

Last night, at the Google I/O Conference, we got a first look at the next big Android update. Google detailed the new features that are going to be made available with Android Marshmallow.

We’ve already spoken about all the major announcements, we’re now bringing the spotlight to Android M. Are you wondering what sets it apart from Lollipop? Check out the list below.

    Clearer Security Permissions

When you launch a newly downloaded app, do the permissions you’re ‘Accepting’ ever worry you? To make things simpler for users, Google has removed that step and instead you’re now going to be asked for a permission, when you choose to use a particular feature within an app. For example, if you’re using WhatsApp and you would like to send a picture directly from the chat box, a pop-up will appear requesting WhatsApp to access your camera.

So how this essentially helps you is that instead of hurriedly accepting the permissions on downloading an app, this way, you know exactly the functions a particular app has access to. This change is very similar to the way iOS handles their app permissions.

    Now on Tap

The company has taken Google Now one step further with ‘Now on Tap’. This feature is not just available with a single tap of a button, it can now be launched while you’re viewing a particular webpage or an app. For example, if you’re viewing a friend’s Facebook profile, you can use Now on Tap to find out more details about the person. It may then link you to the person’s Twitter and Instagram profile.

Another quick example, if you’re discussing a restaurant with a friend via chat, Now on Tap can give you details about the eatery. All in all, it can be launched to give context to anything you’re doing – without having to leave an app.

     android m 5

    ‘Doze’ to Save your Battery

With the new feature ‘Doze’, Android gives your phone the ability to detect if the smartphone has been left unattended for a while. In which case, M will reduce the background activity, giving the phone longer battery life.

    Android Pay

At the conference Google also announced Android Pay. Like every other mobile payment system, it will enable Android users to simply and securely use their Android phones to pay in stores or for Android Pay partner apps. Google has taken this one step ahead, it has added useful fingerprint support which allows users to confirm a purchase with their fingerprint. The newly-added fingerprint support can also be used to unlock devices. The company promises  that it works consistently across a range of devices and sensors.

This is only the first look at the latest version of Android. At the conference, Google stressed upon the fact that the company will continue to work on developing it further. Android M is expected to release later this year.

    Easier to “Cut, Copy, Paste”

Google understands the number of time we need to copy and paste text from one tab to another. Hence it is going to be making our life easier by bringing the options right above the text we want to cut, instead of at the top of the screen. It may not seem like a major change, but it’s small features like these that combine to make our phone usage quick.

  • Apple CEO Tim Cook Reveals His Favourite iPhone 6s Feature

Apple CEO Tim Cook Reveals His Favourite iPhone 6s Feature

Before the iPhone 6s launch, rumours and multiple leaks of the iPhone 6s had suggested that it would come with a massive battery, USB Type-C port and fast-charging tech. Unfortunately, we weren’t so lucky. The few new features Apple did announce were upgraded cameras, new Force Touch and an upgraded body.

Now, Apple CEO in a conversation with Buzzfeed News revealed his favourite new feature about the iPhone 6s – the 3D Touch. This feature is an ungraded version of Force Touch, which was introduced with the MacBook. Just like Force Touch, it also senses your action depending on the amount of pressure you apply on the iPhone screen. Adding to the multi-touch gestures like Tap, Swipe, Pinch, 3D Touch brings Peek and Pop. Tim Cook admitted that these features “save so much time.”

    iPhone 6s 18

With Peek and Pop you can preview the content without opening it entirely. For example, If someone sends you a link to a website, you can Peek at it without leaving the screen you’re on. If you want to open the full page in Safari, press the link a little more deeply to Pop into it.

I personally think 3D Touch is a game changer, I find that my efficiency is way up with 3D touch, because I can go through so many emails so quickly. It really does cut out a number of navigational steps to get where you’re going.

In the same interview, Tim Cook revealed that, going forward, the company may decide to make stock iOS apps optional.  Some of the apps we will be able delete are Tips, Podcasts, Compass, Stocks and iBooks. This would mean good news for people who have opted for the lower storage space iPhones.

Apple May Give Us an Option to Delete Built-in iPhone Apps

Starting the day off with some good news – the current Apple Inc. CEO, Tim Cook, in a conversation with Buzzfeed News commented that a few in-house Apple apps may become optional. He didn’t indicate exactly when we should expect this change, but agreed that he understood that a majority of users wanted out. His comments suggested that the company was working towards making a bloatware-free iPhone a reality.

    apple bloatware

However, Tim Cook also said that we won’t be able to do away with all of the apps. Some of more important stock iOS apps such as Mail, Messages or Safari are interlinked with other functions of the phone and removing them may affect the phone’s performance, if removed.

We’ll figure out a way [for you to remove them]. It’s not that we want to suck up your real estate, we’re not motivated to do that. We want you to be happy. So I recognize that some people want to do this, and it’s something we’re looking at. – Tim Cook

Some of the apps we will be able delete are Tips, Podcasts, Compass, Stocks and iBooks. This would mean good news for people who have opted for the lower storage space iPhones. Considering the amount a 128GB iPhone costs, this is an excellent development.

  • ASUS Launches an Affordable LED Flash Phone Accessory in India

ASUS Launches an Affordable LED Flash Phone Accessory in India

Venturing away from smartphones, ASUS today announced the arrival of interesting accessories in India. They’ve added ‘LolliFlash’ and ‘ZenEars’ to their Indian portfolio, priced at Rs. 899 and Rs. 699 respectively.

Talking about the LolliFlash first, the accessory is a Dual-LED flashlight for smartphones. It slots into a device’s headphone socket and is perfect for adding the much-needed flash light for night time or low light selfies. The LolliFlash provides three brightness levels and a 70 degree beam.

    Lolliflash asus

What’s slightly disconcerting about the device is that it requires charging. The company claims that one full charge provides a 3-hour battery life. The accessory works with any device with a 3.5mm headphone jack. The portable device comes with three colour filters as well – white, blue and red.

Next, Asus introduced the ZenEars, which are earphones. The company claims that they fit perfectly into the user’s ears and effectively absorb reflected sound, reducing distortion and restore more music details. It consists of a patented damping system and transmission tube designed to deliver crystal clear and detailed sound.

Both accessories are available starting today.

  • OnePlus to Host an Open Sale for the OnePlus 2 Soon

OnePlus to Host an Open Sale for the OnePlus 2 Soon

Ever wonder why OnePlus follows the annoying invite system? It’s actually a smart business move by the company. It is there to ensure that their company takes strong and steady steps forward. Thanks to the system, OnePlus only manufactures enough inventory as the demand.  While at times the demand may be higher than the supply, their supply will never overpower the demand. They said it was their solution to managing risks. And for such a young company, that is one of the most important things they need to think about.

However, the same system is a tiresome ordeal for potential customers. With the launch of OnePlus’ second flagship, we had hoped that the company would be better prepared this time around. Unfortunately we were mistaken. It seems like everyone is waiting to get their hands on the product, even after a month after launch. OnePlus has admitted there is a reason for that.

I’d like to apologize on behalf of OnePlus for the delay. To our fans, sorry. We were equally excited when we saw your excitement around the OnePlus 2. We know how it feels waiting and waiting for something you really want, while being given ETAs that go unfulfilled.

In a blog post, Co-founder Carl Pei acknowledged that they messed up the launch of their product. He apologised to the fans, partners and collaborators for the delay in rolling out the product. He said the reason for the delay was a young “inexperienced team” managing cash flow, inventory, supply chain and production. To make up for it, the company will be hosting an 1-hour open sale sometime this month, or early next month.

There was no word about the specific countries for the sale, but since OnePlus considers India as one of the first tier countries, we needn’t worry.

    Galaxy Note5_S-View-Cover_005_Set_All

Samsung has also added something that they call fast wireless charging into the mix with their new Galaxy Note 5. Samsung claims to have combined these technologies and have launched a fast wireless charger, which in theory should also be backward compatible with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

The Galaxy Note 5 is powered by a Non-removable Li-Po 3,000mAh, fast charging, wireless charging compatible with WPC and PMA battery.

  • Xiaomi Set to Rip Off Samsung’s Smartphone Design

Xiaomi has made it no secret that it is ‘inspired’ by Apple’s design language. Across the Chinese company’s massive product range –  there are plenty of uses of white, mixed with the smooth silver aluminium finish. Now according to reports surfacing in China, Xiaomi is working on a smartphone with a dual curved edge display. Sounds familiar?

    Xiaomi-curved-display-concept-render_1

Samsung’s unique ‘edge’ design was first unveiled last year at IFA on the Note 4. The company introduced a one-of-a-kind design which stands out in the crowd for its unique screen, which extends and runs over onto the right side of the device. And if you’re thinking the curved panel is simply a marketing gimmick, you’re wrong.

The extended side screen is super functional as well – it has 7 scrollable panels which are customisable. When the smartphone is locked, the side-panel can be used to have a quick look at notifications and get faster access to certain features such as time and date display, flashlight, camera, messages and even a ruler.  Preferred apps can also be shifted to the side panel, frequent use of which will help users conserve battery life.

    Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 6

After the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Edge, S6 Edge and S6 Edge+ have also utilised this design.

According to the rumour, the upcoming ‘edgy’ Xiaomi smartphone features a 5.2-inch display with a 1440×2560 QHD resolution (565ppi). It is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 808, hexa-core CPU and Adreno 418 GPU. With respect to availability and pricing – it may arrive in October priced around Rs. 26,000 (approx.) Xiaomi is not the only one, it has been reported that LG is also working on a similar design.

Xiaomi has made it its business to bring high-end products at affordable pricing. The effort is appreciable by millions using their products, we’re just not sure if Samsung will be too happy to hear about this.

  • Samsung Officially Unveils The Gear S2 in Two Variants

Samsung Officially Unveils The Gear S2 in Two Variants

It seems like Samsung decided to leave nothing for the IFA Berlin 2015. Unlike last year, when we witnessed the unveiling of the Note 4 and Note 4 Edge at the mega electronics festival, this year Samsung has already unloaded all its blockbusters.

Coming to the new smartwatch – it is 11.4millimeter thin, comes with a 1.2-inch screen with a 360x360resolution (302ppi). To power the device, Samsung has used 1GHz dual-core processor and provided the option of 3G Connectivity. The Gear S2 runs on the company’s very own Tizen OS and uses a rotating bezel, along with the Home and Back buttons, for navigation. Samsung has also added NFC for mobile payments.

The Samsung Gear S2 reflects Samsung’s most progressive innovation. It is the perfect complement for any occasion, easily taking you from day to night, from work to workout

Perhaps, the highlight of the device would be the fact that the company claims it lasts upto 2-3 days on a single charge. Since a wearable is an extra ‘smart’ device that you need to carry around, a long-lasting battery is a necessity.  One of the exciting announcements is that the smartwatch has been announced in two variants – Gear S2 and Gear S2 Classic. Other than the design, the only major difference between the two is their size. The Classic has been built smaller and lighter than the Gear S2. For its timeless design, we’re leaning towards the Classic which comes with a black dial and a leather band.

Samsung also announced that there will be multiple apps already optimised with the watch when it is made available. Though they did not elaborate further on the same. We’re also currently awaiting a word on availability and pricing.

    Features Samsung Gear S2
    Display 1.2-inch, Circular Super AMOLED, 360×360, 302ppi
    AP Dual core 1.0 GHz
    OS Tizen based wearable platform

  • Android Wear Smartwatches are Now Compatible with the iPhone

Android Wear Smartwatches are Now Compatible with the iPhone

Finishing the day off with some good news for iPhone users – Android Wear will finally support Apple’s smartphones. In an official blog post, Google announced that they will be rolling out Android Wear for iOS.

Starting today, the LG Watch Urbane will work with iPhones and all upcoming Android smartwatches, by Motorola, Asus and Huawei, will be also iOS compatible. By this, we’re assuming Google was hinting at the upcoming Moto 360 (Gen 2), Asus ZenWatch 2 and Huawei Watch.

    AndroidWearforiOS

With a smartwatch one doesn’t have to constantly be on their phones in order to check the time, reply to emails, take calls, respond to text messages etc, instead all these activities can be completed by a few glances and voice notes.

Android Wear for iOS is rolling out today. Just pair your iPhone (iPhone 5, 5c, 5s, 6, or 6 Plus running iOS 8.2+) with an Android Wear watch to bring simple and helpful information right to your wrist.

We’re a fan of cross-compatibility –  if we would like to pair an Apple product with a Google product, their interactivity should be easy and seamless. For iPhone users, up until now, the only choice of a smartwatch was the Apple Watch, which has received mixed reviews. On the other hand, Android watches are cheaper and in some cases, more readily available. With this move, Google gives (nearly) everyone the option to buy and use Android watches.

    It’s now your turn, Apple.
