3D-Printed Rocket Company Given Launch Site In Cape Canaveral

Relativity Space, a three year old start up, that wishes to send 3D printed rockets to space have finally received a launchpad in Cape Canaveral. Cape Canaveral is America’s busiest spaceport. Relativity is reportedly taking over a site called LC-16. This pad was previously used by the US military to launch Titan and Pershing ballistic missiles at a point in time. The announcement was made by the company on Thursday. According to the company, they have a five-year agreement with US Air Force to operate out of the launchpad in Cape Canaveral.

Relativity will be the fourth company to gain access to the popular launch site after SpaceX, Blue Origin and the United Launch Alliance. A bidding was held for the launch site and Relativity won the bid. They also have permission to modify the launchpad to suit its own technology. The company will save approximately four years which would have otherwise been spent on building a launch site from scratch.

    Relativity Space

Relativity wishes to deploy and resupply satellite constellations with industry-defining lead time and cost. The uniqueness of Relativity Space is to build an entirely 3D printed rocket. They also have the first fixed tooling-free, evolvable factory and a proprietary building-sized metal 3D printer called Stargate. The company also wishes to eventually print 3D rockets on Mars.

The first launch vehicle for the company is called Terran 1. Surprisingly, the company says that it would only take 60 days to print. The vehicle would have a max payload of 1,250 kg (2756 lbs) to low-Earth orbit.

Relativity Space CEO Tim Ellis was named by Vice President Mike Pence as a member of the National Space Council’s Users Advisory Group last year. The company, even though just three years old, has come a long way. It also has a long way to go, quite literally. To Mars if things go as planned.

  • Redmi Note 7 Pro May Have Snapdragon 675, Price Leaked

Redmi Note 7 Pro May Have Snapdragon 675, Price Leaked

Redmi, since becoming a separate brand from it’s parent company Xiaomi has been working towards building a strong portfolio of phones. The Redmi Note 7 recently sold out in a matter of minutes in China and now it seems like new rumours have surfaced regarding the Note 7 Pro. Xiaomi had announced at the Redmi Note 7 launch that the Redmi Note 7 Pro will debut next month.

The Note 7 Pro will reportedly feature a Snapdragon 675 SoC, as reported by a tipster on a popular Chinese social networking website. Like the Note 7, the new Note 7 Pro will also feature a 48-megapixel primary sensor at the back but instead of the Samsung ISOCELL GM1 sensor, it will use Sony’s IMX586 primary sensor.

    Redmi Note 7 Specifications

The Redmi Note 7 was launched with a Snapdragon 660 chipset along with an Adreno 512 GPU. The phone’s screen is a 6.3 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla Glass 5 for extra protection. The Redmi Note 7 came in two variants. This includes a 64 GB storage, 4 or 6 GB RAM variant as well as a 32 GB storage 3 GB RAM variant. We can expect the Redmi Note 7 Pro to pack atleast 6 GB RAM and 256 GB of space.

Apart from that we can also expect a micro SD card support like the Redmi note 7. Qualcomm had launched the 674 SoC last year and it has support for Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4+ technology. Whether or not the company decides to have wireless charging enabled on the phone we will have to wait and see.

The phone launch is scheduled for sometime around the Chinese New Year next month and according to another tipster, it might cost CNY 1499.

  • Apple May Slow Down Hiring Due To Weak iPhone Sales

Apple May Slow Down Hiring Due To Weak iPhone Sales

Apple was riding the wave of becoming a trillion dollar company, but in the field of tech nothing is certain. Each company has good days and bad days. In a recent report by a reputed news website, Apple has been reported to be planning to cut back on hiring new employees. This indicates that the company may be entering a period of financial problems soon.

    Possible Reasons

Apple’s CEO recently sent out a revised revenue forecast in the light of major issues and challenges that the company is facing. One of the biggest issues is that of iPhone sales in China. China’s economy began to slow down in the second half of 2018. The ban of sales of older iPhones due to a dispute with Qualcomm over patents also played a part. The strong US dollar and the US – China trade tensions didn’t help either. Apple has faced a backlash in emerging and price sensitive markets as well. Chinese manufacturers have taken these markets by storm with their low priced higher spec’d phones.

Batterygate also harmed the company quite badly.  They had to provide replacement batteries to consumers at a lower than expected price. This led to a lot of consumers jumping on the opportunity and getting their batteries changed at just $29 instead of buying new phones. According to the news website, the slump in hiring forecast was made by the CEO of the company in a meeting held a day after the Letter to investors was published.

That being said, it is not unusual for companies to hire lesser number of people. And it definitely isn’t as bad as not hiring any new employees or laying off the ones who work in a company. It might just be a small dent in Apple’s trajectory and may not be a horrible financial problem as most news websites are making it out to be.

  • Redmi Note 7 Sold Out In Minutes

Redmi Note 7 Sold Out In Minutes

The massively popular Redmi Note series saw another phone being added to the lineup recently. The Redmi Note 7 is a budget phone that was launched with a massive 48 Megapixel camera. The company had their first flash sale today and like other Redmi Note phones, it sold out in just a few minutes!

The company in fact sold 100,000 devices in just 8 minutes 36 seconds. This was reported by a senior Xiaomi executive on a popular Chinese social media platform. The company also said that they wish to sell 1 million Redmi Note 7s by the end of January.

    Features And Specifications

The phone features mostly budget smartphone specifications but the main attraction is the 48 MP main camera along with a 5 MP, f/2.4, depth sensor lens. The camera also 1080p at 30/60 and 120fps. It features a Snapdragon 660 chipset along with an Adreno 512 GPU. The phone’s screen is a 6.3 inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. It is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 5. Another great feature is that the phone’s memory is expandable. It supports microSD card up to 256 GB which takes up the SIM slot 2.

The Redmi Note 7 comes in different options. This includes a 64 GB storage, 4 or 6 GB RAM variant as well as a 32 GB storage 3 GB RAM variant. While the product hasn’t come to India yet, we are expecting it to drop sometime in February but for now, the Chinese price for the phone is set to CNY999 for the cheapest option.

    Downside Of Flash Sales

Flash sales allow a company to have limited stock and clear stocks easily and swiftly. Inventory management and storage makes a large part of the cost incurred by phone manufacturers and flash sales help in negating that. However, flash sales have a downside as well. Many have criticised flash sales because it creates a market for bootlegging and grey marketing. Many of these high demand products are bought in bulk by sellers during these flash sales and sold on different websites on a higher mark- up. This has been a growing trend at the moment and is especially prevalent with Xiaomi’s phones. We sincerely hope that the companies do their best to stop this from happening and keeping a constant check on the online websites to flag them and ban the users from further selling or purchasing of goods.

  • Xiaomi Launches Mi Home Projector Lite

Xiaomi Launches Mi Home Projector Lite

Xiaomi has a vast array of products from home electronics, smart home, kitchen appliances, smartphones, televisions, computer appliances – almost everything imaginable. Xiaomi also has had launched projectors in the past, one of which had also won Japan’s 2017 Good Design Award! Now, the company has launched a small portable projector called the Mi Home Projector Lite that can be a perfect fit if you are a movie buff or like to consume your entertainment larger than life. This will be the company’s second projector after the Mi Laser Projector 150 which was released in early 2017.

    Specifications

The projector is a compact long-throw projector which is perfect for smaller houses with relatively smaller rooms. However, the small size does not mean that it is less powerful. The projector can project 1080p images between 40 and 200 inches in size with a native aspect ratio of 1.2:1. It also features 500 ANSI LED lamp that has a life of 30,000 hours. The projector supports HDR10 which is great for viewing quality videos.

The projector also features a built-in speaker, along with Dolby Atmos and DTS support which are all handy features to have. But the most impressive feature is it’s built-in Mi TV functionality along with voice control. The projector supports different kinds of wired input connections and has HDMI, USB and aux inputs. It is quite understandable from the name of the product that Xiaomi is aiming to sell these projectors for homes and not necessarily for workplaces.

The projector however will be only available only in White colour and will be sold in China for the moment. It will be amazing to see this sold in India, but there is no news of that yet. The projector is currently up for crowdfunding and will be available for CNY2199 ($320) which will later increase to CNY2499 ($364).

  • Qualcomm Refused To Sell Chips For Apple iPhones

Qualcomm Refused To Sell Chips For Apple iPhones

It was the talk of the town when Apple decided to ditch Qualcomm’s chips and go with Intel instead. However now, it has come to the forefront that Apple wanted to have Qualcomm chips on their iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR models but was refused a sale by Qualcomm themselves. Apple had originally wanted to give half the contract to Intel and half to Qualcomm. It was in 2016 when Apple started splitting the chip orders between Intel and Qualcomm. But this time they had to give the entire modem order to Intel.

These revelations have come out from a senior member of Apple who revealed these information during his testimony to the US Federal Trade Commission. Apple and Qualcomm have been at loggerheads for quite some time now with Qualcomm being on trial, accused of monopolistic practices. The case registered is based on a complaint brought by the Federal Trade Commission in 2017. Apple had also sued Qualcomm just three days after the FTC filed its complaint. The accusations were similar to that of the FTC stating Qualcomm strong- armed companies into paying royalties.

    Apple Intel
    Image via 9To5Mac

This however has not been a single sided battle and Qualcomm itself has accused Apple of patent infringement in China and Germany. This has led to a decision of banning a few older iPhone models in China as well. Intel and Samsung has also filed amicus briefs supporting the FTC. Both those companies being competitors of Qualcomm.

Implications On The Future Of Smartphone Industry

While Qualcomm has already made strides in the 5G development, Intel’s 5G chips are not ready yet and may take another year. This means manufacturers who use Qualcomm’s hardware will be able to bring 5G ready phones to the market faster than Intel chip users.

On the other hand, if the prices in terms of royalties are reduced by Qualcomm, phone manufacturers may use that extra money to focus on other features. The royalty reduction however wouldn’t trickle down to reduction of phone prices for customers.

  • Cadillac Teases Photos Of Its First Electric Vehicle

Cadillac Teases Photos Of Its First Electric Vehicle

Within a day of General Motor’s announcement stating Cadillac would become General Motors’ “lead electric vehicle brand,” Cadillac has teased images of its first electric vehicle. Almost every luxury car manufacturer is entering the electric vehicle market. Porsche Taycan, BMW i3, Tesla Model 3, Mercedes EQC and more are cars to look forward to this year. Cadillac’s new car is another step in the right direction it seems.

The image is a render of what the car will look like and it looks extremely futuristic. A senior representative from the company was reported to have said that the architectural design will allow the battery packs to fit into the vehicle. They will fit like ice cubes in an ice cube tray.  The example given states that you can put in as much water as you want to make as many cubes as you need — the tray still takes up the same space in the freezer. He also said that the point of the design is flexibility. The car will have support for front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations.

  • OnePlus 7 May Have Wireless Charging

OnePlus 7 May Have Wireless Charging

Information for the next OnePlus device is already pouring in as the launch for the OnePlus 7 comes inevitably closer.  If industry trends are to go by, OnePlus phones might soon feature wireless charging. OnePlus is slowly moving from the budget flagship tag to becoming a full fledged flagship phone and in doing so they will slowly introduce features and benefits that other competing flagships have. These include wireless charging, IP Rating and better cameras. While we know very little about the upcoming phone from OnePlus, we do know that they like to share certain technology with their sister company Oppo.

Oppo has joined the ‘Wireless Power Consortium’. The consortium is an an open, collaborative standards development group of more than 600+ company members around the globe. The members include big names such as Apple, Samsung and Huawei.

Oppo had refrained from wireless charging so far. They have not used this charging technology citing that the technology is not upto the mark since their Super VOOC technology can charge faster. OnePlus’ reasons are similar and the company has said that they will include wireless charging when they figure out a way to include fast charging technology onto wireless chargers.

Oppo joining the consortium maybe a good sign as it might mean their next flagship featuring wireless charging which might eventually lead to wireless charging supported on OnePlus devices. While the industry suspects that this technology will be available on OnePlus 7, we feel it might be added to the OnePlus 7T six months from April/May 2019.

A teaser previously showcased in the 2019 Golden Globes showed glimpses of the 8th season of Game Of Thrones with the legendary dragon and Daenerys Targaryen making a brief appearance.

The final season will consist of six episodes each of which will each feel like a movie in itself! The show’s co-executive producer was also reported to say that this season is about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy. They will also be seen dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death. HBO may end the Game Of Thrones in this season but the saga won’t end here. The company has already reportedly ordered for a pilot episode for a new show. The Long Night, a prequel series set “thousands of years” prior to the current show and will be equally exciting.

  • OnePlus 7 Leaks: What We Know So Far

OnePlus 7 Leaks: What We Know So Far

OnePlus is known to release a new phone every year, six months after their ‘T’ series release. So the new OnePlus 7 phone is due this March or April and we are stoked! Over the past few months there has been several leaks and speculations and in this article we list what we know about the much rumoured phone so far.

    No Notch

One of the recurring themes of the leaks so far have been the absence of a notch in the OnePlus 7. The OnePlus 6 featured a full fledged notch while just six months later, the notch was turned into a water-drop one on the 6T. If this trend continues, the notch could very well be removed on the OnePlus 7.

Moreover, BBK Electronics owned Oppo and Vivo have both tried to remove the notch completely by using ingenious ways like sliding camera, sliding back panel etc. If trends are anything to go by, OnePlus has been known to borrow technology that has been well received by the market. A prime example is the in- display fingerprint sensor which first appeared on a Vivo phone and then was featured on the OnePlus 6T. The absence of the notch will mean the phone will either have a retractable camera or a sliding back.

    Optional 5G

The era of 5G is upon us and OnePlus being one of the industry leaders, won’t be far behind. The company has confirmed that a 5G model of the phone will be made available to the European market at a premium. OnePlus’ CEO also stated that the 5G model will be $200-300 more than the 4G one.

    More Than Two Rear Cameras

OnePlus 5 was the first phone in the company’s stable to feature dual rear cameras. With most high end smartphones like the Huawei Mate Pro being sold with three rear cameras, it won’t be a surprise if OnePlus goes the same route. This rumour also comes from our next point.

    Round Camera Bump

The rumour of the OnePlus 7 with more than two rear cameras comes from an image leak where OnePlus officials are seen using a phone with a round camera bump that looks quite big for two cameras. While it isn’t clear if the leaked photo is just a prototype phone or the upcoming OnePlus 7, it will be interesting to see how the company implements the three camera setup and what lenses they choose to put in it.

    Hardware Speculations

There are several specification leaks as well and some guesses based on past OnePlus device features about the hardware of the upcoming OnePlus 7. The phone will feature a Snapdragon 855 processor which is the latest flagship processor from Qualcomm. The OnePlus 6T has 6GB and 8GB RAM options with 128GB and 256GB  but we expect more from the OnePlus 7. The OnePlus 7 will probably have 8GB and 10 GB RAM with 256GB and 512GB storage. The phone will also feature a larger and more efficient battery compared to the 3700 mAh battery seen on the OnePlus 6T.

  • Birth Of A Black Hole Observed By Scientists For The First Time

Birth Of A Black Hole Observed By Scientists For The First Time

Researchers in a recent study have revealed that an observation was made of a mysterious bright object that lit up the night sky. This sudden glow spotted from Earth, 200 million light years away disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Scientists believe it may have been the exact moment that a star collapsed into a compact object. This might be the birth of a black hole or a neutron star.

    The Cow

Nicknamed ‘The Cow’, the formation of a blackhole is the direct result of a star’s death. The scientists also said that such a phenomenon, the birth of a black hole, has never been witnessed before. Raffaella Margutti, was leading the research for Northwestern University when the phenomenon was spotted.  “We thought it must be a supernova,” Margutti said. “But what we observed challenged our current notions of stellar death.”

The bright light was initially thought to have come from a bright star. However, the scientists changed their view because the flash was 100 times brighter than a normal supernova. The outburst was discovered using the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System also known as ATLAS. ATLAS are a pair of survey telescopes in Hawaii.

    Copyright Raffaella Margutti/Northwestern University

After the outburst was seen, various scientists researched the reason for the phenomenon using different methods. According to reports, Margutti’s team studied The Cow in X-ray wavelengths using NASA’s Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) and the European Space Agency’s International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) and XMM-Newton spacecraft.  Radio waves were studied using the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s Very Large Array (VLA) and in optical light using the MMT Observatory in Arizona and the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope in Chile.

Margutti’s team announced its results on Jan 10 during a news conference. The conference was held at the 233rd meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS) in Seattle. Several other scientists gave their own hypothesis of the phenomenon as well. However, not all of them agreed with each other. But if it is indeed the birth of a black hole that they saw, it would definitely be a scientific milestone of this century.

  • UK Readies Itself With Military-Grade Protection From Drones

UK Readies Itself With Military-Grade Protection From Drones

After a few disastrous incidents of flight delays, cancellations and near misses, UK is all set to put regulations in place for drone flights near airports. It is also reported that all major UK airports now have or will soon have military grade anti-drone equipment.

    UK’s Drone Regulations

Very recently the military were called in to help when drone sightings causing massive delays at Heathrow Airport. Another such incident involved Gatwick airport when drone flights caused major disruption affecting 140,000 passengers just before Christmas. UK government wishes to or already has technology installed at other critical infrastructure such as prisons, power stations and military sites. Gatwick Airport in a statement said that it had spent £5m to prevent future attacks.

The current drone regulations in UK suggests:

    • Drone must be in line of sight at all times
    • Not within 50m of people, vehicles or buildings
    • No higher than 120m

The government in UK are also said to expand technology to detect and repel drones from sites like airports and prisons. A new legislation will reportedly give police additional powers to land drones. They will also be granted the power to require users to produce the appropriate documentation if they deem it necessary.

    India’s Drone Regulations

On the other hand, India lifted the blanket ban that it had put in place for a long time, in December 2018. However, this has been lifted partially and will now allow commercial activities and drone flights. Drone Regulation 1.0 is a step to open up the use of Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPAs) for commercial activities.

The regulation is formulated by the Ministry of Civil Aviation and it has created a huge base for a drone ecosystem in the country. Under this regulation the airspace has been partitioned into Red Zone (flying not permitted), Yellow Zone (controlled) and Green Zone (automatic permission). Permission to fly a drone can be taken using an App. The app is called Digital Sky.

The current regulations for a drone flight in India are:

    • During day light (except those flying in enclosed spaces)
    • Within visual line of sight (VLoS)
    • A maximum height of 400 feet above ground limit (AGL)

Drones will not be able to take flight in “no drone zones”. These include areas close to airports, international borders, State Secretariat Complex in state capitals, strategic locations/vital and military installations. If your drone flight causes damage or injury, you might face penalties under the Aircraft Act 1934, and charged under the IPC sections 287, 336, 337, and 338 which can include anything between Rs 250 fine to two years in jail.

  • India May Send A Female Astronaut To Space In Their First Manned Mission : Says ISRO

India May Send A Female Astronaut To Space In Their First Manned Mission : Says ISRO

India has made much headway in space exploration as well as space research in general. From Space Capsule Recovery Experiment Mission SRE-1 in 2007 to Mars Orbiter Spacecraft launch in 2013, ‘Chandrayaan-1’  launch in 2008 and many more achievements have left a mark on space exploration as a whole. When the entire world is opposing space exploration, citing budget problems, ISRO has remained one of the most budget efficient space research organisation.

[blockquote]ISRO’s budget was just three per cent of that of NASA’s Budget in 2010[/blockquote]

    Chandrayaan-1

Almost ten years after the Chandrayan-1, ISRO has decided on a window for the date of Chandrayan-2 launch. They had earlier set the date at January 3rd but were forced to change as they missed the deadline. ISRO has also set a target for two unmanned missions to space in December 2020 and July 2021, and the target for a manned mission to space in December 2021.

    What ISRO Said

ISRO recently also stated that a woman astronaut could be a part of the first manned spacecraft that India sends to space. The ISRO chief also stated that the initial training for Gaganyaan will be done in India. Further advanced training maybe conducted in Russia. The prospect of Gangayan carrying women astronauts is extremely forward and can become an inspiration for many women in India. Kalpana Chawla was the first female of Indian origin to go to space. She was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. In that disaster the aircraft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere in 2003.

[blockquote]I would say if you have a dream, follow it. It doesn’t really matter whether you are a woman or from India or from wherever. – Kalpana Chawla [/blockquote]

The Gaganyaan will carry a three-member crew for a minimum of seven days in space. The total cost of India’s indigenous human spaceflight  will be Rs 10,000 crore. ISRO has also said that the option for civilian inclusion in the mission will also be open. They further added that the selection will be stringent for the first mission but it might be relaxed for the second and third. It is also worth noting that the Union cabinet has already approved the Gaganyaan programme.

  • PUBG Mobile Bans Even More Professional Players

PUBG Mobile Bans Even More Professional Players

PUBG Mobile has been one of the most popular smartphone games of last year. The Battle Royale styled game drops 100 players into a map where a player has to fight against all the others to emerge victorious at the end. The game’s popularity can be attributed to the fast paced playstyle, various new maps and timely updates. One of the most important things that PUBG ensures, is that its players do not cheat or have any undue advantage over other players.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xM4luRAREMs

In doing so, PUBG has created a positive and fair game environment. Just last year, the game crossed 200 million downloads and achieved over 30 million daily active users. PUBG has also banned over 13 million players since June 2017. This is both a good as well as a bad sign for the game. It is great that Tencent is taking steps to ban cheaters from the game, but it also does not bode well on the company since they are unable to close the gaps that allow people to cheat. Last month, PUBG banned around 30,000 players along with four professional players. Now new information states that twelve more professional players have faced the axe. These included four professional players with three-year bans from the game’s North American esports league.

    Who Got Banned And Why?

The twelve players that were banned recently were reportedly caught using Radar hacks at the PUBG European League (PEL). Out of the twelve, six were caught cheating during a professional game. This includes players named “Papaya”, “Cabecao”, “swalker”, “zuppaa”, “Houlow” and “sezk0.” They now each face a three-year ban. Radar hack allows a player to see their nearby enemies on the map giving them an advantage to spot and shoot first. Four other players named “Avalon”, “Smitty”, “TEXQS”, and “S1D” received a two year ban for using unauthorised software during public matchmaking as well.

  • Red Dead Redemption 2 Adds PUBG Style Battle Royale Modes

Red Dead Redemption 2 Adds PUBG Style Battle Royale Modes

Red Dead Redemption was one of the most anticipated games of last year. With an intense gameplay and a gripping storyline, the game was an overall hit. Rockstar, the makers of the game, appear to be taking ideas from PUBG and Fortnite. The game now includes a Battle Royale styled mode called Make It Count and Gun Rush. This mode drops a group of players who fight each other to emerge victorious as the last man standing. While the gameplay sounds eerily similar to the popular Fortnite and PUBG genres, it is actually quite different from it. In this mode, the players do not collect ammunition and guns that are scattered around the map. Instead, they start with the same weapon or same number of ammunition.

    Make It Count

The Make It Count mode has two playing options – one where the players get bows and a limited number of arrows and the other one where each player gets six throwing knives and a regular knife. The throwing knives deliver a one shot kill. The game area shortens with time forcing players to fight against each other as the game continues. To stop players from camping in once place, Rockstar Games has introduced a feature where if a player is stationary for too long, they are given a warning that states that the player’s position will be revealed. A noteworthy feature of this mode is the music. It is extremely tense and distressing which makes it more interesting to play.

    Gun Rush

Another new Battle Royale mode that Rockstar introduced in the game is called Gun Rush. In this mode, 32 players are dropped into a zone where they fight against one another to become the last man standing. In this mode, you can scramble for weapons and ammunition just like PUBG.

Red Dead Redemption 2 also has a host of other game modes such as Shootout, Most Wanted, Hostile Territory and Name Your Weapon.
