Report: Samsung Galaxy Nexus Will Not Get Android 4.4 KitKat

Shortly after announcing the upcoming availability of the first smartphone to ship with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box, the Nexus 4, Google updated its FAQs for various devices.

Among them, Samsung Galaxy Nexus stands out due to the fact that it’s one of the few Galaxy devices that doesn’t get the Android 4.4 KitKat updates.

    samsung galaxy nexus

According to Google, “Samsung Galaxy Nexus, which first launched two years ago, falls outside of the 18-month update window when Google and others traditionally update devices.”

Android 4.4 KitKat has been designed to run smoothly even on devices with 512 MB of RAM confirms so it’s obviously not about the hardware. The end of the update cycle for the Galaxy Nexus seems to be all about Google saving a few bucks on development costs.

Keep in mind that the Samsung Galaxy Nexus runs a Texas Instruments OMAP processor, and TI isn’t really in the mobile game anymore. Can be difficult to support a device when the chipset manufacturer isn’t really around. This is tough news to swallow for many of you, but the phone is now two years old.

Nevertheless, the Galaxy Nexus was a breakthrough device for Android, heralding in the “Ice Cream Sandwich” age with a strong focus on design.

Google has confirmed that Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Developer Editions will receive an Android 4.4 KitKat update in the coming weeks.

  • Samsung Tops J.D. Power Tablet Customer Satisfaction Survey, Beats Apple

Samsung Tops J.D. Power Tablet Customer Satisfaction Survey, Beats Apple

J.D. Power and Associates is an American-based marketing information services firm that’s highly regarded for its research on customer satisfaction. Apple loves to quote their surveys, and does so at media events and on earnings calls.

But this is one report Tim Cook and company are probably not going to be mentioning. In J.D. Power’s latest tablet customer satisfaction survey, Apple was bested by Samsung on overall satisfaction and in particular areas like device cost.

“Samsung showed particularly strong improvement in the cost factor (25-point increase),” the firm said in a statement. “Apple ranks second scoring 833 and performs particularly well in performance and ease of operation.”

Apple scored 5 out of 5 stars for Overall Satisfaction, Performance, Ease of Use, Physical Design, and Tablet Features, as shown in the chart below. For Cost, apple scored 2 out of 5. In comparison, Samsung scored a 5, 3, 3, 5, 4, and 4 in those same categories, losing to Apple on four of categories, tying in one, and winning on the sixth, Cost.

Samsung tablets received 835 points on a 1,000 scale, with Apple (833), Amazon (826) and Asus (821) right behind it. This is commendable, seeing as in its April study, J.D. Power’s survey ranked Samsung under the study average, with a score of 822, while Apple took the top spot with 836. The surveyors from the marketing firm also note that Samsung is the only manufacturer to have improved in all five areas that are being examined since the last study. These include performance, ease of operation, styling and design, features and cost.

Samsung has sold more than 40 Million Galaxy S4 in 6 months of its launch. Earlier, Samsung sold 38 million of its Note devices, now with the S4 company has reached a new milestone.

It sure is an achievement for the company but Samsung might have assumed this already, as the first month sales for the device itself was 10 Million units. JK Shin, did not reveal the brake down of the sales, but the S4 golden was probably not the show stealer here as it was only available in a limited market. Whereas, the company further updated the product through a firmware tweak which allowed the device to connect with the wearable Galaxy Gear.

  • What to Buy : Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs Galaxy Note 2

What to Buy : Samsung Galaxy Note 3 vs Galaxy Note 2

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 was launched in India for a price of Rs. 49900 (roughly translated to “more than most can afford”) and is now available throughout India. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 features a new design over its predecessor boasting a soft-touch, leather like back, along with many hardware changes that put it right in line with many flagships out there. But, at the price at which it has launched, should you go in for the Galaxy Note 3? or should you get the Galaxy Note 2? Here is where we break it down for you.

    Note 3 13

    Aesthetics

The Note 3 is actually slimmer and thinner than the Galaxy Note 2 despite getting a larger 5.7-inch full HD 1920 x 1080p display. The Note 3 also appears to be squarish from the front and has a slightly raised bezel, as opposed to the roundish bezel on the Galaxy Note 2.

    Galaxy Note 3 12

The new leather look back panel on the Note 3 definitely adds a lot more premium appeal to the previous plastic and poorly constructed look. Which however, does not change the fact that the phone is still completely plastic, now its just plastic hidden behind faux leather-appearing plastic.

    Hardware Comparison

Apart from the obvious differences in the specs, the major changes on the new Note 3 worth noting are, the aforementioned Full HD display, a new Exynos 5 chipset vs Exynos 4 on the Note 2 which offers an effective 1.9 GHz on Quad cores (with full octa-core functionality by December.). You also get 3 new temperature, humidity and gesture sensors, along with an additional gigabyte of RAM.

    Note 3 7

A 16GB bump in storage capacity makes the basic variant (and the only one available in India) a 32GB variant. A slightly larger 3200 mAh battery and 13 MP camera finish off the changes on hardware. Check out a comparative below.

Specifications  Galaxy Note 3 Galaxy Note 2
Display  5.7 inch full HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels (386 ppi) 5.5 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels (267 ppi)
    Processor  1.9 Ghz Octa-Core(Exynos) 1.6 GHz Quad-core Cortex-A9

Despite most attempts by the company, most of the new features of the Galaxy Note 3 will be available on the Galaxy Note 2. Including the new Action command feature which can be executed from the S Pen.

    Note 3 22

With not a lot of difference for the end user, one would consider going for the Note 2 as it would mostly achieve all the features that one would require from a smart phone with pen functionality.

The Galaxy Note 3 is the latest flagship from the company while the Galaxy Note 2 did really well in the past and offers most of the features for the Note 3 at a considerably low price. If you really need to get the  most for your money’s worth, the Galaxy Note 2 is still an impressive piece of hardware with a lot going on under the hood, it is still capable of handling every app in the Google Play store, and whatever you can throw at it. If the latest is what you must get, then consider spending a lot more for the newest Note 3.
