MIUI 9.5 Is Coming To These 30 Smartphones

Xiaomi only recently rolled out MIUI 9 for almost all of its smartphones here in India. The Chinese smartphone maker was commended for not leaving old devices in the dark and even the Redmi 1s, launched over three years ago, received the MIUI 9 update. However, the support will end there for a lot of these smartphones. Xiaomi has announced that the new MIUI 9.5 update will start seeding in late-March. It will gradually reach about 30 Xiaomi devices by the end of April 2018.

    MIUI 9.5 Update Timeline

Late-March: Redmi Note 3 Special Edition, Redmi Note 3 Qualcomm, Redmi Note 4 Qualcomm/Redmi Note 4X, Mi Max, Mi Max Prime, Redmi 3S, Redmi 4 Prime, Redmi 4A and Redmi Note 4 MTK.

    Early-April: Redmi Note 5A Prime/Redmi Y1, Redmi Note 5A/Redmi Y1 Lite, Redmi 5A, Redmi 5 Plus, Redmi Note 5/Pro, Redmi 5, Mi Max 2, Mi 5/Pro, Redmi 4X, Mi 6 and Mi MIX 2

Mid-April: Mi Note 2, Mi 5s, Mi MIX, Mi Note 3, Mi 5s Plus, Redmi Note 2, Redmi 3, Redmi 4, Mi 3, Mi 4

The company has not announced any new features that will be a part of the new MIUI update. However, there are a few users who have been using a stable build of MIUI 9.5 on Redmi Note 4 units. The new update will bring in features like Notification Shade, Quick Reply and the February security patch.

Despite the latest MIUI update, none of the Xiaomi smartphones barring the Mi MIX 2 run on Android 8 Oreo. However, after Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 5 in China running Android 8 Oreo, it looks like at least the 2018 Xiaomi lineup will get a software upgrade.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, Note 5 Pro and Redmi 5 have an 18:9 aspect ratio, like the Mi MIX 2. There is a possibility of these devices also getting support for gesture-based navigation with a future Android 8 Oreo update.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Vs Lenovo S5

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Vs Lenovo S5

Lenovo has officially launched the Lenovo S5 in China. The smartphone has a full metal unibody design with a dual camera setup. The smartphone comes in three storage and RAM variants. The 3GB/32GB model is priced at CNY 999(~Rs 9,999) and the 3GB/64GB is priced at CNY 1,199(~Rs 11,999) and the 4GB/128GB model retails for CNY 1,499(~Rs 14,999). The pricing is similar to the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, which retails for Rs 9,999 for 3GB/32GB and Rs 11,999 for 4GB/64GB model in India.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is the successor of the Xioami Xiaomi Redmi Note 4. However, the difference between the Note 4 and the Note 5 are as thin as a lath. We feel the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro should have been the Redmi Note 5.

    Lenovo S5

The Lenovo S5 is carved out of a single block 6000 series aluminium. Whereas the Redmi Note 5 has plastic antenna bands on the top and the bottom of the device. Both the smartphones have a tall display with 18:9 aspect ratio. The Lenovo S5 has a compact 5.7 inch display, whereas the Redmi Note 5 has a 5.99 inch display with identical 2160 x 1080px FHD+ resolution.

The Lenovo S5 has a dual 13MP camera (RGB + monochrome) while Redmi Note 5 has a single 12MP camera on the back. Similarly, the Redmi Note 5 has a 5MP front-facing camera compared to the 16MP sensor found on the Lenovo S5 with Face Unlock. The Lenovo S5 runs on custom ZUI 4.0 based on Android 8 Oreo, whereas the Redmi Note 5 runs on Android 7 Nougat based MIUI 9. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 has a 4000 mAh battery, while the Lenovo S5 packs in a smaller 3000 mAh battery.

  • Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s Will Look Exactly Like The Mi MIX 2

Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s Will Look Exactly Like The Mi MIX 2

Xiaomi will launch the successor of the Mi MIX 2 on the 27th of March in China. The company has been teasing different features of the Mi MIX 2s over the past few weeks. The company has now released new promotional images which confirm the design of the smartphone. Going by the teaser, the smartphone looks similar to the Mi MIX 2. This also means that all the rumours about the MIX 2s having a notch were false.

    Mi MIX 2

As of now, the company has confirmed that the device will have a dual camera setup with AI capabilities. Similarly, Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi Note 5 in China with the dual camera setup with AI capabilities. So, we might see a similar camera implementation on the MIX 2s as well. Additionally, the company has also confirmed that the smartphone will be powered by Snapdragon 845 chipset.

Apart from being the first Xiaomi smartphone to be powered by the Snapdragon 845 chipset, it is also expected to have wireless charging. Recent teasers have hinted towards the wireless charging feature, which means that it won’t have a ceramic back like its predecessors. It will also be interesting to see if the wireless charging feature will impact the pricing of the device.

     Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s Specs

The smartphone is expected to have a 6 inch 2160 x 1080p display. Under the hood, the smartphone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. However, the smartphone will not support memory expansion, just like its predecessors.

The Mi MIX 2s is expected to have a 4400 mAH Li-ion battery with fast charging. The phone will run on Android 8 Oreo OS with custom MIUI 9 skin on the top. Another interesting feature expected is gesture support. Similar to the Mi MIX 2 which recently got updated to Android 8 Oreo, the Mi MIX 2s will have gesture-based navigation system as well.

  • Xiaomi Redmi 5 Vs Xiaomi Redmi Y1

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Vs Xiaomi Redmi Y1

Xiaomi Launched the Redmi 5 in India in on the 14th of March. The price starts at Rs 7,999 for the base variant and goes up to Rs 10,999 for the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. This is the cheapest smartphone from the company with an 18:9 display. In late 2017, Xiaomi also launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 at a similar pricing.

In late 2017, Xiaomi also launched the selfie-centric Redmi Y1 at a similar pricing. Interestingly, the Redmi Y1 also retails for Rs. 8999 for the 32GB storage variant. So, does the Redmi 5 essentially makes the Redmi Y1 redundant?

To begin with the display, the 18:9 aspect ratio display on the Redmi 5 is generations apart from the one found on the Redmi Y1 with 16:9 aspect ratio. The Redmi 5 has narrower bezels with a higher resolution display. The Redmi 5 takes the lead even with the build-quality. The Xioami Redmi Y1’s plastic unibody design is no match for the Xiaomi Redmi 5’s metal unibody design. The metal design not only looks premium, but it also helps to dissipate the heat in a faster way.

    Redmi 5
    Xiaomi Redmi Y1

The Xiaomi Redmi Y1 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 435. However, the 5 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset. Both the smartphones have an Octa-core processor. However, the Snapdragon 450, which is based on the 14nm FinFET technology is superior to the Snapdragon 435. The chipset on the Redmi 5 is a much more efficient and a faster chipset.

    Redmi 5

The camera is the one department, where the Redmi Y1 excels. The Redmi Y1 has a 16MP front-facing camera, which puts the 5MP front-facing camera on the Redmi 5 to shame. The primary 12MP camera on the Redmi 5 offers a much better 1.25 micron pixels and the Redmi Y1 packs in a 13MP primary camera with unknown pixel size. The 12 MP camera used on the Redmi 5 is an identical sensor, which has been used on other Xiaomi devices as well. In fact, the Redmi Note 5 Pro has an exact sensor.

  • Unboxing The Xiaomi Redmi 5

    Unboxing The Xiaomi Redmi 5

Xiaomi started 2018 with two great budget smartphones, the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi Note 5 Pro. While the Redmi Note 5 is essentially the Redmi 5 Plus that was launched in China, many expected the Redmi 5 to never hit the Indian shores. That, however, changed on the 14th of March when Xiaomi held a live stream event and launched the Redmi 5 in India.

At a starting price of Rs 7999, the Redmi 5 is a peculiar device for the India market. That doesn’t mean that it won’t sell because Xiaomi appears to have cracked the code for India. With three variants launched, there are a few options to consider. But, the base variant is expected to be the popular choice because the Redmi Note 5’s base variant essentially cancels out the other two models of the Redmi 5. Pricing:

So, does the Redmi 5 have enough firepower to have an impact on the increasingly congested budget smartphone segment of India? Let’s unbox the device and find out:

    First Impressions

Usually, the difference between a regular and a plus variant of a device is usually substantial, size wise. However, that is not the case with the Redmi 5 and Redmi Note 5 (Redmi 5 Plus). At a glance, the difference between the two is barely noticeable. The design and build quality of the Redmi 5 resembles the Redmi Note 5 with the same 18:9 aspect ratio. That being said, it still possesses considerable bezels which are even more prominent if you buy the Gold colour variant.

One of the two main differences between the Redmi 5 and Note 5 is the display. It has a 720P display which measures 5.7 inches.

    Specifications

Under the hood, it has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset, a 1.8GHz octa-core processor, Adreno 506 GPU, 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage which will be expandable via microSD card. In fact, the Snapdragon 450 is an underclocked Snapdragon 625 chipset, which is used in the Note 5.

There is a fingerprint sensor placed at the back of the phone just below the camera. However, that is mainly a signature Xiaomi decision and not due to the lack of bezels on the front. Powering the device is a 3300 mAh battery which, Xioami claims has a standby time of up to 12 days. The battery is charged via a micro USB slot which means no fast charging.

Xiaomi recently launched the Redmi Note 5 AI in China that, surprisingly, runs Android 8 Oreo. However, that is not the case in India as the Redmi 5 still runs Android 7 Nougat with MIUI 9 on top.

The device has a 12MP camera at the back with 1.25-micron pixel size. The camera surprisingly only records 1080P videos at 30fps. To the front of the device is a 5MP camera with Beautify 3.0, which is Xiaomi’s software for enhanced selfies. However, unlike the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, the device misses out on Face Unlock feature.

  • Xiaomi Blackshark Specifications Leaked

    Xiaomi Blackshark Specifications Leaked

In one of our previous stories, we reported that Xiaomi could be working on a gaming smartphone under the “Blackshark” moniker. Now, a device codenamed BlackShark has been spotted on Geekbench.

This solidifies the argument that the company is indeed working on a gaming-specific smartphone. However, how viable is a gaming-centric smartphone in today’s day and age? Most flagship devices look and perform almost similarly. But, the one thing that should work in favour of the Blackshark is its pricing.

    Xiaomi BlackShark

According to the listing, the Xiaomi Blackshark will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8GB RAM. The device scored 2452 points on a single core and 8452 points on the multi-core performance. In fact, these scores are on par with other smartphones running on the Snapdragon 845.

The Razer Phone is the best example of a gaming smartphone. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset with 6GB RAM with a dual front-facing stereo speaker. One thing that differentiates the Razer Phone from the competition is its display. The device has an IPS LCD display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. But, since this is only available on an LCD display, the company had to choose that feature over a better quality which an OLED display provides.

    Conclusion

For a gaming smartphone to be a success, it needs to have the ability to tackle overheating. Interestingly, the Xiaomi Blackshark is expected to have a one of a kind aviation class cooling system. Apart from the cooling system, Xiaomi will have to introduce something worthwhile that will make this different from any other flagship smartphone.

If Xiaomi is planning to launch a gaming-centric smartphone, then the company has to make few sacrifices. Will Xiaomi choose the IPS LCD over OLED to offer a better refresh rate? Will the Blackshark come with dedicated stereo speakers with 16:9 aspect ratio?

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI Is The True Redmi Note 4 Successor India Deserved

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 AI Is The True Redmi Note 4 Successor India Deserved

Xiaomi India launched the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 in India on the 14th of February. The smartphone is the successor to Xiaomi’s best selling Redmi Note 4. While many believe the Redmi Note 5 Pro should have been the Redmi Note 5 in India, the true Note 4 successor has launched in China. It is similar to the Redmi Note 5 Pro but, with some better features and camera upgrades.

The Xioami Redmi Note 5 AI is available in two storage and three RAM variants. The 3GB/32GB combination and the 4GB/6GB and 64GB combination. The 4GB RAM model retails for CNY 1,399 and the 6GB RAM model retails for CNY 1,699. Interestingly, this pricing is very similar to the Indian pricing of the Redmi Note 5 Pro.

The Redmi Note 5 AI runs on Android 8 Oreo with MIUI 9 on top. In India, only the Mi A1 and Mi MIX 2 have been updated to Android 8 Oreo so far. It even supports Project Treble, which means it is bound to receive faster software updates when compared to other Xiaomi devices.

Specifications of the Xioami Redmi Note 5 AI

The smartphone has a 5.99 inch FHD+ 2160 x 1080 px IPS LCD display with 2.5D finish. Under the hood, the device has a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 Octa-core chipset with 3GB or 6GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB storage.

    Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro

On paper, the Redmi Note 5 AI has a similar dual camera setup compared to the Redmi Note 5 Pro. However, the Chinese version has a much better 12MP primary sensor with 1.4 micron pixel size and an f/1.9 aperture. However, the secondary sensor on the back remains the same for both the devices. The difference does not stop there, as the Redmi Note 5 AI’s camera also supports Dual PD dual-core speed focus for a faster autofocus speed. However, not all is doom and gloom for the Redmi Note 5 Pro as it sports a superior 20MP front camera compared to the 13MP sensor found on the Redmi Note 5 AI.

Finally, both devices come with a 4000 mAh battery. The Redmi Note 5 AI also supports Qualcomm QuickCharge 3.0 while the Redmi Note 5 Pro is limited to Quick charge 2.0.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A Now Available in Lake Blue Colour For Rs 5999

In fact, the company offered the Redmi 5A for just Rs 4,999 for the first 5 million customers. However, the Redmi 5A is now available for the original price, that is Rs 5,999. This means that the company has sold 5 million units of the device.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A is the cheapest smartphone from the company, with highly competitive specifications. To celebrate this success, the company has now launched the smartphone in Lake Blue colour, which debuted with the Redmi Note 4. The Xiaomi Redmi 5A with Lake Blue colour will go on sale from the 22nd of March at 12:00 PM. The 2/3GB RAM version will retail for Rs 5,999/6,999 respectively.

    Specifications of Xiaomi Redmi 5A

  • Xiaomi Launches Mi Body Composition Scale In India At Rs. 1999

Xiaomi Launches Mi Body Composition Scale In India At Rs. 1999

Since the turn of the year, Xiaomi has launched quite a few products in India. Up until February, the most famous Xiaomi products were its smartphones and power banks to an extent. In 2017, we met with Manu Kumar Jain, MD of Xiaomi India who conceded that Xiaomi had plans to bring non-smartphone products to the Indian shore. It looks like that has already started.

After launching three smart televisions in a space of one month, the company has now launched the Mi Body Composition Scale in India at a price of Rs. 1999. The device is available to buy exclusively via Mi.com. Fortunately, there are no flash sales for this product. However, its smart TV products will continue to be sold via flash sales which is understandable since their demand is much higher.

    Mi Body Composition Scale Features

The smart weighing scale from Xiaomi is obviously more than just a weighing machine. It has a slip-resistant build which makes it safe to use with wet feet. It has a white LED which lights up three seconds after someone stands on the scale. Xiaomi claims that the scale provides accurate body composition statistics with 10 precise data points. It shows muscle mass, BMI, visceral fat, bone mass, body score, body fat, weight, basal metabolism, water content, and more.

For such detailed information, Xiaomi claims to use complex algorithms and Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA). The Mi Body Composition Scale connects to the Mi-Fit app, which would make a lot of sense for people who also own a Mi-Fit band. Another interesting feature is that the Mi Body Composition Scale can store up to 16 user profiles.

The scale is powered by four AAA batteries that come out of the box. It has a weighing range between 5kg and 150kg with a reading precision of 50 grams.

  • Xiaomi Teases Mi MIX 2s Camera Capabilities

Xiaomi Teases Mi MIX 2s Camera Capabilities

Xiaomi will launch the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s in China on the 27th of March. This will be the first flagship smartphone from the company in 2018. In fact, the company has already confirmed that it will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with AI-powered dual camera setup.

The company has released a new teaser with clapping hands. The teaser suggests that the smartphone might feature fast autofocus. However, the company could also be talking about the slow-motion video recording, similar to the Samsung Galaxy S9.

A new leak about the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s has already confirmed that the smartphone will have a 12MP IMX363 sensor 1/2.55” size, 1.4µm pixels. In fact, this is the same sensor that has been used on the Asus ZenFone 5z.

    Mi MIX 2s

One thing that we are unsure about the device is the design. Initially, many renders showcased a completely bezel-less design with a corner notch, that houses front-facing camera. However, the recent renders are hinting towards a Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 like display with a bottom notch, that has a front-facing camera. The camera primary camera module is placed vertically on the back, which facsimile the camera design of the Apple iPhone X. In fact, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro also has a similar camera placement.

Expected specifications of Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s

The smartphone is expected to have a 6 inch 2160 x 1080p display with a notch at the top right corner. Under the hood, the smartphone will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. However, the smartphone will not support memory expansion.

    Mi MIX 2s
    Mi MIX 2s Leaked Specs

The device is expected to have a 4400 mAH Li-ion battery with fast charging. Wireless charging seems improbable if the leaked image turns out to be genuine. The phone will run on Android 8 Oreo OS with custom MIUI 9 skin on the top. However, none of the Xiaomi devices, barring the Mi A1, run on Android 8 Oreo as of now.

  • Xiaomi Redmi 5 Vs Samsung J7 Nxt Vs Moto G5s

Xiaomi Redmi 5 Vs Samsung J7 Nxt Vs Moto G5s

Xiaomi has officially launched the Redmi 5 in India for a starting price of Rs 7,999. The device comes with a metal unibody design with an 18:9 aspect ratio display. In fact, this is the cheapest Redmi smartphone to feature 18:9 aspect ratio display. And can be deemed as a downscaled version of the recently launched Xiaomi Redmi Note 5.

At the time of launch, the device was compared to smartphones like the Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt and Moto G5s. The Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt is one of the most affordable smartphones from the South Korean smartphone maker. The smartphone has a 5.5 inch HD 1280 x 720 px Super AMOLED display with 16:9 aspect ratio. Though the device has prominent bezels compared to the Redmi 5, the OLED panel offers impressive black levels and high contrast ratio.

The Galaxy J7 NXt is powered by Exynos Octa-core chipset with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage. However, unlike the Moto G5s and the Redmi 5, the device does not have a fingerprint scanner. Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy J7 Nxt also misses out on the full metal unibody design.

The Moto G5S is the close contender for the Redmi 5. The smartphone has a full metal unibody design and a fingerprint sensor. Stock Android OS is also an added advantage for the Device. However, unlike other two devices, the smartphone has a full HD 5.2 IPS LCD display with Corning Gorilla Glass protection.

    Xiaomi Redmi 5 Specifications

The Xiaomi Redmi 5 has a 5.7-inch 1440 x 720 px display with an 18:9 aspect ratio. However, the bezels are still very visible, especially in the Gold colour variant.

Under the hood, the Redmi 5 has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 chipset, a 1.8GHz octa-core processor, Adreno 506 GPU, 2GB, 3GB or 4GB of RAM, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of onboard storage which will be expandable via microSD card.

The Redmi 5 has a 12MP camera at the back with 1.25-micron pixel size.

Android 8 Oreo For Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 Brings iPhone X Like Gestures

Launched back in October of 2017, the Xiaomi Mi MIX 2 succeeded the 2016 bezel-less device, Mi MIX. It followed a similar design language with thin bezels and a thick chin to house the front camera. But, like almost every other Xiaomi smartphone, it ran on Android 7 Nougat with MIUI on top. After updating the Mi A1 to Android 8 Oreo, the Mi MIX 2 has also received the stable build for Android 8 Oreo.

Mi MIX 2 Android 8 Oreo Update

The update weighs in at about 1.4GB and should be rolled out to all devices soon. To install the update, you need to charge your Mi MIX 2 first. Then head to Settings>About Phone>System Update. Then download the update and install it.

Full-screen gestures is a highlight feature that has been added. Introduced in a Beta build back in December, the gestures essentially replace the stock buttons for navigation within the UI. We will be testing out the gestures to check how the implementation works with a smartphone Xiaomi Mi MIX 2’s size.

However, users will barely feel the difference after switching to Android 8 Oreo considering how heavily customised MIUI skin is.

Over the years, Xiaomi devices have been deprived of the latest version of Android OS. However, it recently received a lot of plaudits for updating devices as old as 4 years to the latest version of its MIUI skin. Even smartphones like the Redmi 1s Prime and Redmi Note 4 have been updated to MIUI 9 which is commendable. Whether more Xiaomi devices will be added to this list is yet to be seen. But, the signs are good so far.
