Xiaomi Launches Redmi 5A With ‘8-Day Battery Life’

Xiaomi has launched the successor to 2016’s Redmi 4A, the Xiaomi Redmi 5A in China. Two selling points of the new Redmi 5A according Xiaomi are its ‘8-Day battery life’ and the fact that it weighs only 137 grams.

The Redmi 5A isn’t a huge upgrade over its predecessor, the Redmi 4A. The Redmi 5A has a 5 inch LCD display with a 1280 x 720 px resolution. Just like the Redmi 4A, the new smartphone is also powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 chipset, quad-core CPU clocked at 1.4GHz, along with 2GB of RAM. There’s only one storage model announced at the time of its launch but, more storage and RAM variants are expected to be announced in the coming weeks. The current model has 16GB of onboard storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. The dual-SIM Redmi 5A is powered by a 3000 mAh battery which seems to be a downgrade when compared to the Redmi 4A which packs a 3120 mAh battery. The device will run Android 7.1 Nougat out of the box with Xiaomi’s custom MIUI 9 skin on top.

The Redmi 5A has a 13MP rear camera with an f/2.2 aperture, burst mode, panorama mode, HDR mode, and more. To the front is a 5MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture. The smartphone records 1920 x 1080 px videos.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A is priced at CNY 599 (Rs. 6000 approx.), and will be available for pre-orders starting Monday in China. It will be available via the company’s official site as well as other e-commerce websites in China. There is no official word on the smartphone’s availability in other markets including India as of now.

  • Leaked Poster Of Xiaomi Redmi 5A Reveals 8-Day Battery Life

Leaked Poster Of Xiaomi Redmi 5A Reveals 8-Day Battery Life

After a recent leak revealing what the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 might look like, the Redmi 5A now seems to have been leaked. A promotional poster of what might be the new Xiaomi Redmi 5A has been leaked on China’s social networking site, Weibo.

From the poster, there are a few things we can infer. The Redmi 5A won’t look all that different from its predecessor. It looks like the Redmi 5A will have a metal unibody rather than the plastic build found on the Redmi 4A. Since only the back of the phone is visible, it is hard to deduce anything about the front of the device. There seems to be antenna lines at the top of the phone and the back camera along with the LED flash are placed between the two antenna lines. The text translates to “Lightweight and Long Battery Life.” The poster reveals that the phone will weigh at about 137 grams and have an incredible 8-day battery life. The poster goes on confirming that this smartphone will use a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and run on MIUI 9 out of the box.

A recent listing on the certification website TENNA revealed a few details about the Xiaomi Redmi 5A. The smartphone will have a 5 inch display with a 1280 x 720 px resolution. The listing mentions a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor although there is no mention of the name of the chipset. The phone will be launched in 2GB RAM/16GB storage and 3GB RAM/32GB storage variants. The poster confirms the presence of the MIUI 9 over Android 7.1 Nougat. The images revealed along with the listing have been corroborated with the leak of the promotional poster revealing a metal unibody design.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A is expected to be priced at 599 Yuan (Rs 5900 approx.) for the 2GBRAM/16GB storage variant and 699 Yuan (Rs 6900 approx.) for the 3GBRAM/32GB storage variant.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 With Bezel-Less Design Leaked

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 With Bezel-Less Design Leaked

Xiaomi has been known to launch multiple smartphones across the price range in a year and 2017 seems to be no different. After launching the Mi A1 with stock Android and the Mi Mix 2 with tri-bezel less display, it looks like the Redmi Note 5 is not too far away from an announcement. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 seems to have been leaked and the images reveal a large display and very thin bezels. Large displays aren’t new to the Redmi Note lineup but, considering its entry-level price point, a bezel-less display looks like very interesting.

One thing that might change from the leaked image to the actual device could be the white bezels. As far as specifications are concerned, there isn’t much known about the Redmi Note 5. Xiaomi might go for the Helio P25 or P30 chipset this time around. Prior Redmi Note devices have had the Snapdragon chipset and previous reports hinted towards a Snapdragon 660 chipset. As is with all Redmi Note phones, it will be a powered by a massive battery, probably a 4000 mAh battery.

The images also reveal a dual-camera setup which will be a first for this lineup. After the Mi A1’s launch, it won’t be surprising if the Redmi Note 5 with dual cameras is launched in India. Although, the Indian variant will definitely have a Qualcomm chipset.

The company had launched the Redmi Note 4 last year in August and has completed its update cycle. Xiaomi might launch the new Redmi Note 5 early next year. As far as pricing goes, the phone might be launched in the same price segment as the previous Redmi Note devices but, due to the bezel-less design and dual cameras, the pricing could be similar to the Mi A1 or the Mi 5X.

  • Big Bazaar And Xiaomi Partner Up To Sell Redmi Phones Offline

Big Bazaar And Xiaomi Partner Up To Sell Redmi Phones Offline

In order to solidify its already growing presence in the offline market in India, Xiaomi has teamed up with Big Bazaar. You will soon be able to buy the Xiaomi Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 at Big Bazaar outlets.

Xiaomi, just like a lot of other Chinese OEMs came to India focusing on the online market. Over the course of time, smartphone makers realised that an untapped offline market might yield them better results than focusing more on the online market. OnePlus, a company that has solely operated through its online channels recently announced a partnership with Croma. OnePlus also has its OnePlus experience stores but, there are only two in India. So, a deal with an offline retailer with a widespread operation in India made sense.Apart from Big Bazaar, Xiaomi already sells its phones via multiple offline chains like Sangeetha Mobiles, LOT, Big C, Univercell and more along with its own Mi Home stores across country.

With record-breaking sales figures, the Redmi Note 4 has been Xiaomi’s best-selling smartphone. The company turned a few competitors’ heads when it announced that it has shipped over 10 million smartphones in September globally, and over 25 million phones in India in 3 years since entering the market. Xiaomi has been selling its mid-rangers like hot cakes in the current festive season. During the sales on Amazon and Flipkart over a course of 3 days, Xiaomi sold over a million devices.

It is no surprise that every company wants a presence in the offline market. Google recently conceded that Pixel phones in 2016 didn’t do all that well in India because of a lack of offline presence in India. Smartphone makers which came to India as online exclusive have branched out to the offline market to tap the people who are sceptical about online shopping and like to buy a phone after physically using it.

  • Xiaomi Sold Over 1 Million Smartphones During Amazon And Flipkart Sales

Xiaomi Sold Over 1 Million Smartphones During Amazon And Flipkart Sales

Xiaomi had a festive couple of days during the Amazon and Flipkart sales. The Chinese tech giant said that it managed to sell over 1 million smartphones in India. Amazon’s Great Indian Festival Sale and Flipkart’s Big Billion Days Sale saw heavy discounts on smartphones and already mid-ranged phones became even more affordable.

Xiaomi managed to sell about 300 smartphones on an average every minute for two days. The company said it saw a significant increase in sales this festive season, compared to last year, where it took them about 18 days to sell one million smartphones.

Xiaomi said that the Redmi 4 was the highest selling smartphone on Flipkart during the sale and Xiaomi was the best-selling brand for both Amazon and Flipkart in the mobile category. Eight of the nine best-selling smartphones in the sale for both Amazon and Flipkart was again, Xiaomi products.

This achievement marks an industry first, and is a key milestone for Xiaomi India. Our careful planning has also ensured that high selling smartphones such as Redmi 4 and Redmi Note 4 are in stock throughout the festive sale. We are extremely thankful to all our Mi Fans for their amazing support, and will continue to work hard to constantly outdo ourselves as we have done on many occasions in the past

Xiaomi has been a dominant force in the budget smartphone category in the Indian market and selling 1 million smartphones albeit, heavy discounts is no mean feat. Xiaomi would want to translate the budget smartphone category success into flagship success as well. The Mi 6 was the last flagship smartphone Xiaomi released in India and the chances of Mi Mix 2 reaching the Indian shores look bleak. Recent reports of the Mi 7 featuring wireless charging have surfaced and its launch in India with Xiaomi’s typical aggressive pricing might make it a success in India.

  • Xiaomi Mi 7 Might Feature Wireless Charging

Xiaomi Mi 7 Might Feature Wireless Charging

It seems like Xiaomi has finally jumped the wireless charging bandwagon and the Mi 7 might be the first Xiaomi phone to feature wireless charging. Xiaomi seems to have joined the Wireless Power Consortium according to their official website.

Wireless Power Consortium was formed back in 2008 and its sole purpose is to promote wide market adoption of the Qi wireless charging technology. In 2012, Google and Nokia released phones that supported inductive charging using the Qi standard. From then on, the consortium started receiving mainstream coverage as more and more companies joined it. Over the years, wireless charging has become a standard parameter for flagship smartphones as the trend and need for wireless charging has increased.

In February 2017, Apple Inc. officially joined the Consortium and rumours of the new iPhone featuring wireless charging started doing the rounds on the internet. Those rumours were confirmed On September 12 when Apple unveiled the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the highly anticipated iPhone X with Qi wireless charging capabilities. The fact that even Apple has opted for the Qi wireless charging technology means that this feature will be adopted universally very soon.

And now, Wireless Power Consortium’s official website has listed Xiaomi as a member:

It’s extremely likely that Xiaomi is preparing to launch devices that support the Qi standard although it remains to be seen whether the first Xiaomi-made phone with wireless charging will be the Mi 7.

There is no official word from Xiaomi being listed as a member suggests that it is extremely likely that Xiaomi is preparing to launch devices that support the Qi standard. Whether the Mi 7 will have wireless charging or not is yet to be seen, and chances of next year’s Mi Mix 3 having wireless charging is a possibility as well, since the Mi Mix 3 will be a more globally targeted device, just like the Mi Mix 2.
