  • Apple Event Round Up : The 8 Most Important Things Apple Announced

Apple Event Round Up : The 8 Most Important Things Apple Announced

On Thursday, Apple held its second product release event in six weeks. The 90-minute event at Apple’s headquarters here was a sombre affair compared to the mega-launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, Apple Watch and Apple Pay. This time the news was expected, however, Apple plenty of new hardware and software during the event.

The company added to its product line the two new iPads, a 27-inch iMac with eye-popping Retina display, and OS X Yosemite, Apple’s latest desktop operating system. The iPad Air 2, iPad mini 3 and the devices will go on sale later next week in 29 countries (India is not on the list) while pre-orders open online today.

We are listing the important highlights of the event that will take considerably less time than it will take you to re-watch the event:

    1. The New iPad Air is Skinnier Than Ever

Apple has relied on its time-tested strategy for updating a offering – make them thinner. The new device is only 6.1 mm thick, thinner than the new iPhones by almost 1mm. As expected, it is powered by the new Intel A8x Chip, a 2nd gen 64 bit architecture, which is 12 times faster than the current one. Apple claims that graphics performance of the new iPad Air 2 is 180 times faster, which gives console like gaming experience on the iPad Air 2. The tablets will feature a fingerprint scanner similar to the one found in the latest iPhones. The sensor enables people to use a fingerprint instead of a passcode to unlock the device, also can be used to make purchases using Apple Pay.

    ipad air 2

The new iPad Air 2 houses the 8MP iSight camera on the back with a f/2.4 aperture and supports HD video recording. Along with that, there is a front camera which features a new face time HD camera, burst selfie, slo-mo and more. The iPad Air 2 runs on the latest iOS 8.1 and features a LCD layer on the display and an anti reflective coating, reducing reflection by upto 56 per cent. The iPads are priced starting  $499 (16GB). The 64GB version is available for $599 and the 128GB for $699.

    2. There added a iPad Mini too, with Touch ID

Apple confirmed the third generation iPad Mini featuring the new Touch ID fingerprint sensor during the event. iPad mini 3’s screen is at 7.9-inches with a 2048×1536 resolution at 326 pixels per inch (ppi). Apart from the Touch ID, it has the same Retina display with an aluminum coating at the back. It will be available in gold, gray and silver colour variants.

    ipad mini

It features a 5 megapixel iSight camera and a FaceTime HD camera. The camera carries the iOS8 features such as time-lapse and panorama. This iPad features dual microphones, on the front and back. Instinctively, when you switch cameras from front to back (or vice versa), the microphones switch, too. The price starts at $399 (Rs. 24,574 approx.) for 16GB in Wi-Fi only, while the 128GB + LTE model will cost $729. Pre-orders start tomorrow and shipping starts by the end of next week.

    3. Apple Pay Will go Live on Monday (Only in the USA)

Apple confirmed it will begin rolling out the service next week on 20th October i.e. on Monday. Apple’s payment system allows people to bump their phones to pay for items in the 220,000 stores that have NFC (near-field communication) readers, as well as pay for items in apps by using the fingerprint scanner on Apple’s newest mobile devices.

    apple-pay-iOS-8.11-640x400

Once third-party apps also use the Touch ID features, you can use this feature on other apps as well. As far as Apple Pay is concerned, it will be available only in the US and essentially allow users to replace their credit card with their device to make actual payments.

    4. New iMacs come with the ‘World’s Highest Resolution Displays’

Along with Yosemite,  Apple is bringing out the updated version of iOS. They’ve spent time and effort taking in user feedback and have updated the problem-prone update.  iOS 8.1 brings the Camera Roll and iCloud Photo Library in beta, a feature that allows you to store all of your photos from all your devices in the cloud. The new iMac features a 27-inch display with 5210×2880 pixels resolution, which is 14.7 million pixels, which according to Apple, “is the world’s highest-resolution display”. Seven times more pixels than a Full HD TV, 67 per cent more pixels than 4k. The display is only 5mm thin at the edge.

The Oxide TF and a new low-power backlight helps it use 30% less energy despite the large display and heavy resolution. The base model runs on a 3.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor, AMD Radeon R9 M290X graphics card,  has 8GB of RAM, and a 1TB Fusion drive. The iMacs are priced starting $2499 (Rs. 1,53,913 approx).

    5. Developers can Start Working on Apple Watch Apps Next Month.

File picture shows the new Apple Watch during an Apple event at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino

Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook remained vague about when the company’s smartwatch will go on sale, saying only that it will be early next year. But the company is releasing WatchKit, software that will let developers start working on apps for the devices.

    6. Yosemite is already available

Taking continuity to the next level. Apple definitely is the first company to benefit from this because of its enormous hardware ecosystem. OS X Yosemite is the upcoming eleventh major release of OS X, Apple Inc.’s desktop and server operating system for Macintosh computers and it will be available from today. It can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for Free.

Yosemite gives you mirrored access across all Apple platforms for instant access. For example, the iPad recognizes what you’ve been working on and prompts you about it. You can stop working on the Mac, pick up your iPad and start working on your project right way without a second of lag. There is no need for third party apps. There is no need to open a cloud app and download the file, it’s always there.

    7. iOS 8.1 Will Roll Out on Monday

Along with Yosemite,  Apple is bring out the updated version of iOS. They’ve spent time and effort taking in user feedback and have updated the problem-prone update.  iOS 8.1 brings the Camera Roll and iCloud Photo Library in beta, a feature that allows you to store all of your photos from all your devices in the cloud.

    8. Apple SIM is a new iPad Air 2 hidden feature

Perhaps the most interesting news about Apple’s new iPad Air 2 tablet is buried at the bottom of one of its marketing pages: It will come pre-installed with a new “Apple SIM” card instead of one from a specific mobile operator.

    ipad-sim-apple

Apple explains, “The Apple SIM gives you the flexibility to choose from a variety of short-term plans from select carriers in the U.S. and UK right on your iPad. So whenever you need it, you can choose the plan that works best for you—with no long-term commitments. And when you travel, you may also be able to choose a data plan from a local carrier for the duration of your trip.” So far, Apple lists three of the top four US operators—AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile—as partners. In the UK, there’s EE, a joint venture between T-Mobile and Orange. Apple says participating carriers may change.

  • Nexus 9 vs iPad Mini 3: Which One Got it Right?

Nexus 9 vs iPad Mini 3: Which One Got it Right?

Apple has finally unveiled the new generation iPads and iMacs. The company had earlier “accidentally” released some information about the new generation products from its stable. Seems like Apple has put some real challenge for Nexus.  Both the iPad Mini 3 and the Nexus 9 are priced close to Rs. 24,000 ($400).

Now that we have the knowledge of the juicy bits  of these devices that make them tick, we’d like to take them for a spec comparison.

    Specs

    Nexus 9

    iPad Mini Retina

Display 8.9-inch QXGA 7.9?inch Retina display
Processor 2.3GHz, 64-bit NVIDIA Tegra K1 Dual Denver A7 Chip

Main Camera 8 MP 5 MP
Front Camera 1.6 MP 1.2 MP
    Battery 6700 mAh
Operating System Android 5.0 iOS 8.0.1

Overall, on the spec sheet, it looks like the Nexus 9 is beating Apple’s latest offering quite easily; Google and HTC together have formed a good device. Apple’s Handoff features though will be truly appreciated by the fans, and thus the device will find many takers. The features can still be up for debate, and we’ll get you the full story once these devices are available.

  • Yovo: Photo Sharing App Which Prevents Screenshots of Your Photos

Yovo: Photo Sharing App Which Prevents Screenshots of Your Photos

Privacy is a major concern today. Following the slew of celebrity hacks and password leaks, people have started doubting the safety of social sharing. Especially with photographs that can be stolen by unscrupulous hackers and posted on the internet, it is necessary to keep them safe from unrecognized eyes. Yovo, a Photo sharing App, tries to address that.

Yovo is developed by privacy software company called ContentGuard. The app utilizes Barrier Grid optical illusion to keep your photos secure. The app restricts the ability for people to gain the image using screenshots. When somebody opens the photo message the grille moves and allows them to see the picture. If the receiver attempts to take a screenshot, it will result in an image with blurred sections.

    yovo

The app can come handy for people who are sending personal or even restricted content through photos and had previously used other apps, such as Snapchat. Now that even Snapchat has been compromised, this is probably a good time for Yovo to come as a good alternative to the service.

Yovo also allows you to selectively blur images from your phone before sending them. There is also a self-destruct timer which can be set for 1 second to 24 hours. It truly protects your content, including your messages.

    yovo 1

If it succeeds in providing what its promising, Yovo can actually gain a huge following. Snapchat is claiming that the third party apps were responsible for the leak. Hopefully, Yovo has a better hang of things than the hugely popular service. The app is available on the App store. So give it a try and if you like it, ask the developers to come with an Android version soon.

  • Apple Unveils New App for Easier One-Handed Typing on Big-Screen iPhone 6

Apple Unveils New App for Easier One-Handed Typing on Big-Screen iPhone 6

Apple, the global technology giant, has introduced a new app called ‘One Handed Keyboard’ that allows iPhone 6 and 6 Plus users to type with one hand making it easier to handle the bigger screens.

The aptly titled app, One Handed Keyboard, displays what it claims to be the same size of keyboard iPhone users have grown accustomed to over the years. The keyboard is still on its initial stage, offering only a smaller keyboard that docks to either side of the screen, with extra controls to adjust the theme or color of the keys.

    one hand keyboard

However, the auto-correct library is missing from the app, meaning that whatever you type is what’s displayed, the new iOS will not correct it for you. Though the App Store listing does mention that this is a feature coming in an update soon.

The California-based company has been appreciated for this as when it comes to entering text on the larger keyboards users are forced to give up one-handed use. Apple did its best to alleviate any issues for users switching to the bigger iPhone 6 and 6 Plus with its reachability feature.

  • Everything We Know About the Upcoming iPad Air 2

Everything We Know About the Upcoming iPad Air 2

It is said that the refreshed version Apple’s iPad Air is going to launch as soon as the end of this month. The rebooted version of the 2013’s hugely popular 9.7 inch tablet is tipped to feature the company’s new A8 system on chip and TouchID, and many other features which debuted with the iPhone 6.

According to reports, suppliers are gearing up to begin production of the next-generation iPad Air dubbed iPad Air 2 later this month.

    Design and Hardware

    apple_ipad_air_2

Back in June,  Ortud forum shared some images of the dummy unit claiming it’s not a working model but all the dimensions, design, ports and buttons will be in the exact same place. The dummy illustrated the change in the home button which seemed like the Touch ID style from iPhone 5S. All the buttons are in their normal place with the rocker on the side but the lock key on this model is missing. Another big change is a small microphone next to the rear camera.

It is said that the big changes will be on the inside; a new CPU, more RAM and the implementation of TouchID, as well as Apple’s new iOS 8 software will make up the share of USPs for Apple’s 2014 iPad Air. Apple has now launched the iPhone 6 with a next generation A8 processor on board and it is likely Apple will follow suit and use the same technology on the iPad Air 2. On the iPhone 6, the A8 chipset comes with a clock speed of 1.39GHz and on the iPhone 6 Plus it’s a little less powerful at 1.32GHz.

    Display

    apple_ipad_air_22

Number of reports have claimed that Apple is adopting IGZO display technology in its next-gen iPad models. IGZO display panels are said to offer better viewing angles, improved colour reproduction, as well as being more power efficient than existing LCD setups. However, it is said that this may not happen because of the never ending production issues. According to Korea’s ETNews, “The reason for this is because Sharp is currently facing low yield issues which will not be dealt with in a timely manner”. For this reason, the report adds, Apple will wait until at least 2015 to debut iPads with IGZO panels, meaning we’re likely to see them implemented inside the iPad Air 3

    Color Variants

    o-GOLD-IPAD-MINI-facebook

According to Bloomberg, sources close to the production of the new iPad Air 2 suggest there will be a new colour option. Plans are in place to manufacture a gold version of the new 9.7-inch iPad as well as the usual grey and silver colour options. The publication’s sources claim it is in an effort to increase sales in the iPad market that is, as we know, been flagging recently.

    Release Date

    apple_ipad_air_2_volume_buttons

Apple has planned a major event on October 16th, and it seems like it would be the day the sleek tablet is unvieled. Last month, Bloomsberg reported that the production of the iPad Air 2 is now underway and Apple is looking to bring the slate to market in late-Q3, early-Q4. They said, “Mass production of a full-sized iPad with a 9.7-inch screen is already under way, with an unveiling projected for the end of this quarter or early next year. A new version of the 7.9-inch iPad Mini is also entering production and will probably be available by the end of the year.”

Earlier, it was believed that Apple might launch the iPad Air 2 alongside the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. This of course didn’t happen and Apple instead focused on handsets, mobile payments and wearables in the shape of the Apple Watch. With regards to a new iPad Air, nothing so far is known, apart from it being in production and tipped to launch before Christmas. The iPad Air launched in October last year and Apple, known for repeat launch dates, is expected to launch the new iPad Air during the same time frame.

  • New Stats Show iOS 8 is the Least Successful Upgrade by Apple

New Stats Show iOS 8 is the Least Successful Upgrade by Apple

Latest figures show that Apple’s iOS 8 usage has grown by a mere 1 per cent in the last three weeks. Which means fewer than half of its users are running iOS 8, nearly three weeks after launch. Compared to previous roll outs of new versions of iOS, these figure are shockingly low.

Despite the introduction of custom keyboards, the Notification Center widgets and a lot more, there has been a slow adoption. By September 21, iOS 8 was installed on 46 per cent of devices, 47 per cent of iOS users continue to stick to iOS 7, possibly due to a number of bugs that had plagued the launch of iOS 8.

By this point last year, iOS 7 uptake was already hovering around 60 per cent, according to analytics firm Fiksu. Apple said on its developer pages that it measures usage from App Store visits over a period of time. Figures are typically released every two or three weeks. iOS 8, which comes re-installed on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, has been dogged with problems from its initial release.

    ios8adoptionnumbers

Just ahead of the launch of iOS 8, all Health Kit-enabled apps were pulled from the App Store due to a major HealthKit bug. A fix was quickly released, but the update, iOS 8.0.1, disabled the cellular service and Touch ID functionality on iPhone 6 and 6 Plus devices. iOS 8.0.2 fixed the problems introduced with iOS 8.0.1 and brought several other bug fixes. The publicity surrounding the iOS 8.0.1 issue may have discouraged some users from updating.

It is said that the major problem with the new iOS 8 is also the large file space; it needs almost 4.6GB of free space to install and then update. Users with 16GB and 8GB iPhones struggle to spare that much memory for the upgrade.

  • Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus Pre-Orders Start Today in India

Apple iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus Pre-Orders Start Today in India

Apple’s latest flagship iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are all set to launch on October 17th, right before Diwali. The launch, about a month after the phone arrived  in the US, will go down as the fastest launch of a new iPhone model ever.

This time around, Apple has chosen e-commerce dealers for the new iPhones. Amazon.in and Ahmedabad-based Infibeam promise a firm dlivery date for iPhone 6 sales in India. Both website will take pre-order starting noon today. The online retail firm has promised to deliver iPhones 6 and iPhone 6 plus on October 17 in all urban areas, and in rural areas in a couple of more days.

    iPhone 6 18

The 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 will be available for Rs. 53,500, while the 64GB version is priced at Rs. 62,500. The 128GB version of the phone will sell for Rs. 71,500. The 16GB version of Apple iPhone 6 Plus will be available at Rs. 62,500, while the 64GB version is priced at Rs. 71,500. The 128GB version of the phone will sell for Rs 80,500.

Offline retailers have repeatedly complained to phone brands about low prices being offered by online retailers. As a result, companies are increasingly going through ‘exclusive’ partners for online selling to retain control over prices. The prices announced by Infibeam are exactly the prices that Apple has stipulated, and not lower than that. The prices are what you can get in offline stores as well.

  • iPad Pro to Come with A8X Processor and 2GB RAM

The iPad Pro will be the newest product in Apple’s tablet lineup and it is rumored to release it next year. However, amidst the iPhone 6 launch madness, the news about this new device slowed down. Now, recent reports have revealed a crucial specification about the forthcoming tablet.

According to Taiwanese tech blog TechNews, the iPad Pro will be powered by an A8X processor paired with 2GB of RAM. The A8X chip will be an upgrade to the A8 processor that currently powers the new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. The reports added that, TSMC, which is a major manufacturer of the A8 chipsets, will also be making the A8X chip.

    iphone-ipad-mini-ipad

Furthermore, the device is also expected to come with 2GB of RAM, which is double when compared to iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display, which was launched last year. According to a report from earlier this week, the iPad Pro, as well as the next generation Retina iPad Mini will be released sometime next year.

Other than that, the company is hosting an event on October 21, where it is expected to launch the next-generation iPad Air tablet. The new tablet is expected to be powered by an A8 processor, will come with Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved camera. Some reports also suggested that the new iPad Air could come with 2GB of RAM, an anti-reflective screen coating, and come in different color options, much like the iPhones.

    Unboxing : iPhone 6

The iPhone 6 is finally in our studio and we get our dirty hands with the next generation of Apple phone. The iPhone 6 is going on sale in India on the 17th of October for an expected price of Rs. 48,500 for the 16GB variant, whereas the big brother, the 6 Plus, will be available for Rs. 54,500 for the 16 GB as per information available to us.

    iPhone 6 11

The box of the iPhone is no different than the previous generations, and you can expect to find the same things in the box, including a cable, a wall charger, Apple EarPods, along with some basic paperwork.

    iPhone 6 15

The phone is light out of the box, which may be the biggest reason behind #bendgate. It feels light and nimble although the front display is big and beautiful which immediately captures your eye.

    iPhone 6 5

The rounded edges sit very comfortably in your hands, many times better than the previous gen, which without a case was slightly sharp in the hand.

You see a boost in the performance out of the box. The iPhone is much smoother and the rounded display gives it a natural feel when sliding between pages. Websites look much better on the large display, which is bright and super crisp.

    iPhone 6 9

Apple has put in a lot of new hardware into the new iPhone since it was a number change edition Apple A8 chipset with 64 bit Architecture along with a hexa core GPU. Ram wise you still get 1 GB but that seems more than sufficient for the phone. Storage is dependent on what model you buy and cameras have not been bumped up in specs but in tech, adding phase detection, autofocus along with improved pixel capture. Slow motion video at 240 fps on a 720p resolution is really impressive.

This time around the iPhone 6 has a 1810 mAh bumping up from the 1560 of the iPhone 5s. Stay tuned for our Full Review out shortly.

  • Apple Races to Fix the Bug Laden iOS 8.0.1 Update

Apple Races to Fix the Bug Laden iOS 8.0.1 Update

The customers of Apple are not having a good time lately. The company that recently launched its latest flagship, the iPhone 6 has been mired in consumer complaints. One major complaint is that the screen bends in tight back pockets. Now the company is also rushing to fix the iOS 8.0.1 update whose bugs have caused multiple issues for customers who bought it.

The folks who updated their phone soon found out that the phones had lost cell service and the Touch ID. The Cupertino-based tech giant apologized for the error and pulled back the update stating that they will be bringing out a fix in the next few days.

The recently released update shut down cell service and Touch ID on the new iPhones
The recently released update shut down cell service and Touch ID on the new iPhones

Apple had released the update to fix minor bugs and some bugs in the Health App. But it, unfortunately, caused major headaches to new iPhone buyers. The older phones on which the update was installed didn’t have any such problems though.

For people who have already updated to the faulty update, Apple is offering a simple workaround. It is asking the users to reinstall iOS 8 through iTunes. This will however make the Health apps nonfunctional, which the company says will be fixed in an upcoming update.

Apple is no stranger to bad response from consumers, it has faced several major complaints in the past. After the iPhone 4 launch, it was observed that the faulty antennae design led to dropped signals. In 2012, the Apple Maps was the cause of a lot of furore. Recently during the launch of the iPhones, the live stream debacle caused a lot of heartbreaks for folks who had been waiting for the show for a long while.

The iPhone 6 and the 6 Plus are still Apple’s best phone outing, and we’d all be waiting to see how the fix works out for the folks who raided their pockets to buy the device.

  • Dropbox Update Fixes iOS 8 Issues and Adds New Features

Dropbox Update Fixes iOS 8 Issues and Adds New Features

Dropbox has updated its iOS app to fix a number of issues which arose with the latest version of Apple’s mobile operating system. The file-sharing application has rolled out its iOS 8 upgrade, which now includes a new Notification Center widget of its own, offering a quick overview of your files and recent changes.

The problem was spotted just before the release of iOS 8. There was a bug in the operating system that broke Dropbox’s automatic backup of photos and videos. The compatibility issue led to the feature being temporarily put down for iOS, but Dropbox swiftly fixed this backup problem.

    dropbox-for-ios

With this upgrade, the biggest iteration is that Dropbox can now be added to the iOS 8 Notification Center, providing a view of your most important files, including those associated with business or personal. For those with only either of the two, you’ll just see a single list, instead of three separate tabs which were earlier left empty consuming unnecessary space.

The widget is another major change in the upgraded version. You can track newly added files, as well as changes like renamed files and edits directly from widget. With a tap on a file name, you can quickly launch Dropbox without needing to locate the app on your phone.

    screen-shot-2014-09-23-at-1-24-28-pm

Also, the app includes new Shared Folders feature, which can now be created and managed on the go from the Dropbox app on iPhone and iPad. You can also share the link to a folder from an action menu in the app, or invite users to a folder and manage their access levels.

Another feature is that with iOS 8 supports app extensions, so you’ll now be able to import and export files to and from other iOS apps that support Apple’s “Storage Provider App Extensions” functionality. And, for Business or Pro users, the new upgrade enables the users to set and manage read-only permissions on shared folders via the Dropbox app, for control over what’s being shared.
