  • Moto Z4 Play To Have A 48MP Camera And Snapdragon 675 Chipset

Moto Z4 Play To Have A 48MP Camera And Snapdragon 675 Chipset

Motorola launched the Moto Z lineup as their first modular smartphone series in 2016. The smartphones saw success at first, but then just a lukewarm response if any. But it looks like Motorola is not ready to throw in the towel just yet. The once-iconic brand hasn’t seen a breakout success in a while. But reports about a possible Moto Z4 have emerged online. Now some details about the Z4 are out and it looks like a mid ranger.

    Moto Z4 Play Specifications

Motorola’s Z Play series has always targeted the Mid Range market. Expect the Moto Z4 Play to be no different. The Moto Z4 Play is expected to have a 6.2 inch AMOLED screen with a waterdrop notch and a slight chin. The phone will run on the 11nm Snapdragon 675 and will arrive in two variants. One will have 4GB RAM and 64GB storage and the other will have 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone will ship with Android 9 Pie with close to stock Android. Moto Z4 Play will be powered by a 3,600 mAh battery. The highlight will be the 48MP camera at the back. Moto Z4 Play will use a sensor from Q Technology.

The device is said to retain support for all the Moto Mods. Motorola promised the first gen Mods to be compatible for at least 3 years. That promise should’ve worn out with the Z3 series, but looks like Mods are staying. The launch of the Moto Z4 lineup may also see new mods alongside it.

The pricing and launch date is a little vague at the moment. But considering Motorola’s launch records, the phone may arrive in the first half of 2019. The Z3 series didn’t launch in India, so the hopes of the Z4 Play making it seem pretty dim.

  • Samsung Patents New S Pen With Built-In Camera And Optical Zoom

Samsung Patents New S Pen With Built-In Camera And Optical Zoom

Unarguably, Samsung has been trying to be the leader of innovation in technology especially in the smartphone region. With huge success from devices such as the Galaxy S9, S9+ and the Galaxy Note 9,  Samsung is now adding bluetooth functionality to its signature S Pen. This has more implications than we can think of.

    Note 9

    Expected Features

Enabling bluetooth in the Stylus previously enabled users to use it as a selfie remote, a feature that was usually availed by purchasing add-ons. This was perfect to take selfies and group pictures from a distance. It now appears that the Samsung is taking this a step further. With the inclusion of a built-in camera, taking pictures will become a whole lot easier. Samsung has now been officially granted a patent for the same by the US Patent And Trademark Office.

    About The Patent

The patent was first filed in February 2017. The patent included an “electric pen device”, with “an optical system that had a lens & an image sensor”. This allowed the camera to be controlled from an external device. This means that the bluetooth functionality will be obviously retained in the new S Pen.

You can clearly see in the patent image that the optical camera lens is set in the upper chamber of the new S Pen. It also has a control key that will control the zoom-in & zoom-out feature. Its been some time since the patent was filed, so we can expect it to be implemented in the next big Samsung device. Not anytime soon though, because the optical zoom would make the new S Pen thicker than its predecessors. Guess we’ll just have to wait for Samsung to make their move then.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Will Support Reverse Wireless Charging, WiFi 6

Samsung Galaxy S10 Will Support Reverse Wireless Charging, WiFi 6

Samsung is all set to release the Galaxy S10 series this month. There have been a number of leaks surrounding the devices and we pretty much know everything about the devices now. But a new leak has emerged courtesy the Federal Communications Commission or the FCC. The recent documents leak give an insight to an interesting feature of the device. The Samsung Galaxy S10 series is all set to get reverse wireless charging support. The phones are also going to be the first ones to arrive with WiFi 6 compatibility.

XDA Developers first caught eye of these images on FCC’s website. Reverse wireless charging is not a new feature to have in a smartphone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro was the first commercially available device to have this feature. The difference between both of them is that Samsung’s technology is faster.

    What Is Reverse Wireless Charging?

Huawei first launched the reverse wireless charging technology with the Mate 20 Pro. It allows the phones that support wireless charging to charge another wireless charging compatible phone. It is done through touching the backs of both phones together. According to tests done by GSMArena, the reverse wireless charging in the Mate 20 Pro has an output less than 5W. The Galaxy S10 is 9W wireless charging compatible. This should mean faster reverse wireless charging speeds.

But reverse wireless charging requires two phone to be lined up perfectly so it may become awkward to use. One more issue is the battery size of the Galaxy S10 series. Barring the S10 Plus with the rumored 4000mAh, the meager 3300 mAh and 3000 mAh battery in the S10 and the S10e respectively may drain the battery faster.

Samsung is also adding a WiFi 6 compatible modem inside the Galaxy S10 series. This theoretically means faster WiFi speeds on compatible routers. There are not many routers compatible with this tech yet, so this may not be useful for a lot of people. The Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10e are launching on February 20.

  • SpaceX Test Fires A Huge New Engine For Their Next Rocket

SpaceX Test Fires A Huge New Engine For Their Next Rocket

SpaceX recently completed its first test fire of its Raptor Engine. This is reportedly going to power SpaceX’s next rocket, which will be brought to light very soon. It was announced by Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX. He posted a couple of videos which showed the engine blasting off in all its glory. One video lacked sound, whereas the other one was pretty feature rich. The test took place at SpaceX’s test site in McGregor, Texas.

The Raptor engine is the latest successor to the company’s previous Merlin 1D engine. They will power SpaceX’s upcoming mission to Mars and beyond, so they are actually pretty powerful. It’s actually suggested to turn down the volume before you watch the second video though, because yes, it’s VERY loud. SpaceX is now supposed to perform ‘hop tests’ of altitudes between 1,640 and 16,400 feet.

These are the videos of the blast test, straight from Elon Musk’s Twitter.

This test used a full-scale engine that was ‘radically redesigned’. It uses methane as it’s primary fuel, just because it performs better. The current Merlin engines provide almost 190,000 pounds of liftoff. Instead, the Raptor will give around 440,000 pounds of liftoff. The test flights of the Starship can begin soon, probably by the next two months. Still, Elon Musk believes that an unmanned mission to mars may happen anytime before 2022. It could be followed up by a manned flight to Mars in 2024.

  • Xiaomi Working On A Smartphone With A Punch Hole Display

Punch Hole display cameras are all the rage these days. It wouldn’t be wrong to call it the leading trend of 2019. There have been lesser bezels, notches and various solutions to reach to the bezel less future. Many smartphone makers are busy trying to innovate with the trend. Now, Xiaomi also is hopping on the punch hole display bandwagon and may launch a device with the said feature soon, according to patent documents.

The patent filed by Xiaomi is for dual camera in the punch hole display. The patent was filed on January 29, 2019 in the Global Design Database of the WIPO. It stands for World Intellectual Property Office. The patent consists of 24 illustrations of different models. All the designs show what appear to be two cameras in the display. Many other sensors are also placed in the screen like a proximity and light sensor.

    Punch Hole Displays

Punch hole displays are nothing new in smartphones. First introduced late last year with the Samsung A8s and the Honor View20, the trend seems to quickly catch up. More and more smartphone makers are trying to use this technology in their products. Samsung is also set to use punch hole display to put selfie camera in the Galaxy S10 series. Also, the Galaxy S10 Plus is rumored to have 2 cameras embedded in the display.

Xiaomi launching a smartphone with the said feature would mean that the punch hole camera will trickle down to affordable prices. It is not known currently which smartphone Xiaomi will use to introduce this feature. But the Mi Mix series has always avoided the notch cleverly, so the punch hole display to put cameras will be a good fit for the Mix series to begin with.

  • OnePlus Wants Users To Design The Next OxygenOS Feature

OnePlus Wants Users To Design The Next OxygenOS Feature

In the plethora of Android makers overloading their smartphones with skins and unnecessary bloatware, OxygenOS truly stands out. It is the closest a maker has gotten to stock Android with some great improvements over it. The gestures are better than the Pixel phones, there is an dark mode which works like one, and super quick updates. These are just some of the features OxygenOS offers that aren’t available in most Android devices.

Looks like it is about to get even better as OnePlus has started a competition. Called the #PMChallenge, it will let the users pitch an idea of a feature they want. Enough reasons and a good implementation and you may see the feature in the next update. OnePlus announced the competition on its forum.

    Competition Details

OnePlus has made the process of submitting you entry fairly simple. You have to Submit a PRD (product requirements document) answering the following questions. You have to keep #PMChallenge in the title. Also, all of this needs to be posted in the Tech section before February 22.

    • Who are the users?
    • What is the proposed function?
    • What is the user value?
    • If there are existing comparable functions in the smartphone industry, how is your proposed feature superior?

The software team will check the entries and will announce the winners by mid of March. In the forum post, OnePlus says that it gets hundreds of suggestions everyday which may get overlooked. Also, by this competition, it will help them go through every suggestions and would definitely help them to make OxygenOS a better platform for its users.

We think OnePlus has justified its popularity by listening to their customers using fun interactive activities like these. OxygenOS is also turning out to be one of the best Android software experiences.

  • Apple To End Support For iOS 13 On Older Devices

Apple To End Support For iOS 13 On Older Devices

One things Apple users have an advantage over any smartphone maker is the software. The brand has been consistent enough to update even some of its older devices seamlessly. But it looks like Apple will change things up a bit as a report from an Israeli website The Verifier. The report says that Apple is soon ending support for iOS 13 on older devices. The news comes after lower than expected sales of the newer iPhones. It was to the excellent software support on older devices to make it run like new. These two news may be related to each other more than you think.

Possible Devices That May Be Affected

Out of the current Apple devices, these are the devices that are expected to be affected by this change.

    iPhones:

    • iPhone 6s
    • iPhone 6s Plus
    • iPhone 6
    • iPhone 6 Plus
    • iPhone SE
    • iPhone 5s

    iPads:

    • iPad Mini 2
    • iPad Mini 3
    • iPad Mini 4
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Air 2

    iPod:

    • iPod touch 6th generation

This might be step on Apple’s part as the recent decline in iPhone sales has been attributed to the lack of the need to upgrade. Or it may be that Apple is phasing out these devices due to older hardware. Whatever may be the case, Apple might release the iOS 13 in the coming months. And the features it will bring would be most applicable to the newer devices, so the decision makes sense. But with Apple pushing updates to devices for as long as they do, makes them still the most backwards compatible OS makers.

Apple has been pretty consistent with updating their older devices. The iOS 12 update reached to the iPhone 5s, a six year old device. This news may be a big deal for the people who have purchased an older Apple device recently. But this move by Apple may result in the increase of sales of the newer devices.

The Portless Meizu Zero Is Available For Pre-Order At $1299

The year 2019 has just begun, and we already have some crazy technology promised. Foldable and 5G phones are almost here. Vivo and Meizu showed off their crazy port-less, hole-less phones last month. The phones show us a glimpse of what the future may hold. And now you don’t have to wait for a long time to get your hands on one. Meizu Zero is available on crowd funding site Indiegogo for pre-orders. The price that the Meizu Zero is set at $1299 a pop. That the price you need to pay for the removal of ports and buttons.

    Meizu Zero Specifications

The Meizu Zero is the first phone in the world with no buttons, ports or holes in the chassis. The phone is just a slab of metal throughout. For the price, the phone features a 5.99 inches AMOLED screen with minimal bezels. Meizu Zero has a Snapdragon 845 inside. The RAM size isn’t known but estimates suggest that there may be 8GB of RAM inside the phone. The phone runs on Meizu’s Flyme 7 atop Android Pie. The phone has a dual camera setup at the back of 12+20MP. There is a 20MP sensor on the front.

The phone relies on new technologies like eSIM, fast wireless charging to replace the ports and holes required for the traditional solutions. The phone’s current backing price is $1299 on Indiegogo. Only 100 devices are being made available out of which 20 are already claimed. Expected shipping is April 2019, that is if they meet their goal. The set goal is $1,00,000 out of which around $29,000 have been raised.

The phone is an interesting proposition but at the price of $1299, which is around Rs. 93,000 in India. The phone seems a little too expensive for the price. The phone seems even more expensive when you consider that it has dated internals and is from a relatively unknown manufacturer.
