  • LG Confirms The V30 Will Feature Floating Bar And Facial Recognition

LG Confirms The V30 Will Feature Floating Bar And Facial Recognition

LG continues the trend of announcing new features of the upcoming V30 on the company’s blog posts. After revealing that the V30 will feature an OLED display, LG showed off new features including a Floating Bar, Facial and Voice Recognition along with various customisation options.

Earlier this month, LG announced that the V30 will sport a 6 inch OLED display, all but confirming that it is dropping the secondary ticker display which was found on the V10 and V20. The new smartphone will also feature LG’s UX 6.0+ which will offer a lot of personalisation options for a more intuitive user experience. The semi-transparent Floating Bar allows for quick access to frequently used functions and can be dragged completely off the display when not needed. The new Always On Display offers more customisations, it not only shows the clock, but can also be set to display Quick Tools, Music Player or a personal photograph as well.

The UX 6.0+ also features new security updates such as facial and voice recognition. LG has stated that the user can unlock the phone by just looking at it, without pressing the lock button. The voice recognition feature uses Qualcomm’s Aqstic voice UI technology that is always listening for a passphrase consisting of three to five syllables. Lastly, LG touches on the V30’s haptic feedback, which can be customised with various included vibration combinations that can be matched to the phone’s ringtone.

LG has spilled the beans on a lot of features of the V30 just a couple of weeks before its launch leaving little to one’s imagination. Till we get our hands on the flagship device, let’s take a look at what we know about it so far-

  • Google Might Announce The Official Name For Android O On 21 August

Google Might Announce The Official Name For Android O On 21 August

The official name of Google’s latest version of Android OS may be unveiled on 21 August. Android O was announced during Google I/O 2017 and the developer’s preview started rolling out after that. According to a series of tweets by David Ruddock from Android Police, Android O will receive its official name on the day of the Solar Eclipse. Last year, Google officially announced Android 7.0 Nougat on August 22, so based on continuity alone, the August 21 date seems quite likely.

    https://twitter.com/RDR0b11/status/895720628426166273

The tweets also suggest that Google will make a big deal out of the unveiling and is “planning a spectacle.” He also mentioned that the name won’t be random and publishing the name right now would be a spoiler.

    https://twitter.com/RDR0b11/status/895720859070898176

Android 8.0 brings new features such as Notification Dots, Autofill, Smart text selection and Picture-In-Picture. Google has also said to improve the security and increased the booting speed in the new OS. Notification Dots show the notification of an app after a long press.

A small notification bar pops up at the top right corner of the app and shows the notification of the particular app. The Autofill feature helps in filling forms inside an app. Smart Selection feature is a machine learning based features that select only important text to be copied. Android O also comes with a multitude of back-end improvements such as better battery management algorithms, app optimisations, audio enhancements like improved Bluetooth audio and more.

Earlier rumours claimed that Android O will be named after the popular cookies, Oreo. A few weeks ago, developers found references to the term “oatmeal_cookie” in a sample code that was used in a presentation slide at Google I/O indicating that ‘Oatmeal Cookie’ could very well be Android O’s name.

With the soon-to-be-launched Google Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 tipped to be the first smartphones running the new Android O, it seems highly likely that these reports are true and that Google will indeed announce the official name of the new operating system. When Android O officially starts to roll out, it is likely that the Pixel and Nexus devices will be first in line to receive the update and other smartphones will follow suit.

LG recently teased the launch of the Q6 in India with its edge-to-edge display. And now the phone is available to buy on Amazon at a price of Rs 14,990. LG has decided to launch the variant with 3GB RAM and 32GB storage in India.

  • LG V30 To Be The First Smartphone With An F/1.6 Lens

LG V30 To Be The First Smartphone With An F/1.6 Lens

LG is set to launch its 2017 flagship, the V30 on August 31 at IFA, Berlin. Although we have seen a lot of leaks and renders of the V30, LG is not shy about shedding some light on its upcoming smartphone either. A few days ago, LG announced that the new phone will be LG’s shift to OLED panels and now, LG has shared a blog post telling us that the V30 will be the first camera phone with an f/1.6 lens. Apart from the official announcements, the LG V30 was leaked due to the company’s own official marketing campaign.

The f/1.6 lens lets in 25% more light than f/1.8 lens on the likes of the iPhone 7 Plus. Besides the wider aperture, the glass Lens also delivers greater light-collecting ability than a plastic lens as well as better colour reproduction. Along with the new construction, the camera will feature laser detection AF, optical image stabilisation and electronic image stabilisation. LG hasn’t made it clear whether both the cameras will take advantage of this construction but it definitely will compete for the best camera phone of 2017. LG has shown that the V series will continue to focus on media consumption. From the V10, which had one of the best cameras two years ago to the V20 which had great sound and now the V30, which presumably has the best lens so far in a smartphone.

LG also recently announced its shift to OLED displays, and that the LG V30 will feature a 6-inch edge-to-edge display, which will be an improvement over the V20’s design. This shift also indicates that LG has prioritised the quality of media consumption on the upcoming smartphone as well as future devices.

  • India Bans Wayback Machine – The Internet Archive With Over 300 Billion Pages

India Bans Wayback Machine – The Internet Archive With Over 300 Billion Pages

In a move that can be construed as a move against the idea of the free internet, the Indian Government has banned the Wayback Machine. Wayback Machine is a California-based non-profit that has been archiving the World Wide Web for over 20 years now. It has archived over 300 billion web pages, and stores nearly 15TB of data. It is one of the most utilitarian sites on the web and allows users to archive pages, access archived pages for free, and also get hold of several terabytes of music, movies, books, and software that are free from copyright.

Users who tried to access the website on last Tuesday night saw a message from their ISP that read – “Your requested URL has been blocked as per the directions received from the Department of Telecommunications, Government of India. Please contact administrator for more information.” The block as of now seems patchy, as users on BSNL, Airtel, Hathway and Tikona have reported the block but a lot of other people can still access the website. It is unclear as of now why the government felt the urge to block archive.org which many people rely on for information from back in the day.

This is the second time that the government has blocked archive.org. back in 2014, the government blocked archive.org, GitHub, Vimeo, Pastebin, and Weebly among others after a threat from the terrorist group ISIS. An Internet Archive spokesperson told Buzzfeed India, “Obviously, we are disappointed and concerned by this situation and are very eager to understand why it’s happening and see full access restored to archive.org.” Also, queries from the Internet Archive to the Department of Telecom have gone unanswered.  Chris Butler, Office Manager at the Internet Archive said, “We have not been contacted by the Government of India regarding this apparent blocking of archive.org. We have no information about why a block would have been implemented.”

There are ways to bypass the block, as a Redditor suggest that it can be accessed using an HTTPS link or by spoofing your location by using a VPN.

Nokia 8 Leaked In Live Pictures With Benchmark Results Ahead Of Launch

HMD Global will launch the Nokia 8 on 16th August and several leaks and renders have accompanied the anticipation of the launch. By now we have a fair idea about how the device will look and the latest leaks shed a little more light on the hardware side of things.

The benchmark results were spotted on Slashleaks and suggest that the Nokia 8 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 Chipset with 4GB RAM. The flagship will run on Android 7.1.1 Nougat and also sport a 2560 x 1440 px QHD display. The benchmarks show that the screen has a pixel density of 559 PPI which translates to either a 5.2-inch or 5.3-inch display.

The images do show the Nokia 8 device but due to terrible lighting, the only thing visible apart from the screen are the two touch-capacitive button under the screen. The fingerprint sensor will be housed in the home button as well. The leaked images do not spill out any other details about the upcoming device.

The dual-camera setup will feature Carl Zeiss optics and have laser autofocus as suggested by a leak on Twitter. The Lenovo K8 Note is run on a  MediaTek MT 6797D Helio X23 a Tri-cluster, 64-bit chipset with a 2.3 GHz high-performing deca-core processor and the Mali T-880 MP4 GPU. The device has either a 3GB or 4GB RAM and 32GB or 64GB onboard storage which is expandable via a microSD card. The Lenovo K8 Note runs stock Android 7.1.1 out of the box, and Lenovo has removed their Vibe UI complete for a pure Android experience, the phone also supports USB OTG for added storage options.

The Lenovo K8 Note features a 5.5-inch 1920 x 1080 px display with a pixel density of 441ppi and a Corning Gorilla Glass with oleophobic coating for scratch and smudge resistance. The K8 Note is also splash resistant due to its P2i coating, although the resistance might decrease with time due to wear and tear of the nano coating. The fingerprint sensor sits at the back of the device under the cameras. The Lenovo K8 Note comes in two colours – Venom Black and Fine Gold.

The phone features a deca core CPU, which manages to pull off day to day usage without lag, you also get quick multitasking and a responsive UI thanks to stock Android and ample amounts of RAM. The cameras also offer up a depth mode with a 13 MP + 5 MP combination allowing the user to simulate an f/1.2 aperture using the combination of light from both the cameras, blurring out the background of the subjects. This mode is great and the K8 Note is possibly the only device with this feature in the price bracket.

The Lenovo K8 Note also features a unique customisable convenience key on the left of the device, designed to play and manage music, but can be assigned to launch an app or carry out a task online, even the painful Bixby button on the S8 and S8+ doesn’t do that.
