  • There Will Not Be a Macbook/iPad Hybrid, Says CEO Tim Cook

There Will Not Be a Macbook/iPad Hybrid, Says CEO Tim Cook

Just a couple of days after his comment on the Microsoft Surface Book where he called it “deluded”, Tim Cook has rubbished any rumours and speculations of a Macbook and iPad hybrid. This comment follows what Apple marketing head Phil Schiller said about the hybrid market. He sees it as a nascent realm unlikely to grow into anything significant.

    iPad Pro

Elaborating further, while talking to an Irish newspaper, Cook said any hybrid device would mean an inefficient product that would satisfy neither the iPad user nor the Macbook user.

“We feel strongly that customers are not really looking for a converged Mac and iPad. Because what that would wind up doing, or what we’re worried would happen, is that neither experience would be as good as the customer wants. So we want to make the best tablet in the world and the best Mac in the world. And putting those two together would not achieve either. You’d begin to compromise in different ways,” said Tim Cook, CEO, Apple

  • Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Gets Benchmarked, Will Have Intel Inside

Xiaomi Mi Pad 2 Gets Benchmarked, Will Have Intel Inside

It looks like the wait for Xiaomi’s Mi Pad 2 will soon be over. Rumours about the tablet began as far back as December last year. In September, the Mi Pad 2 was certified in China and today the tablet has passed the Geekbench benchmark test. According to the test, it looks like the Mi Pad 2 will have Intel inside. The test revealed that the tablet will sport an Intel X5-Z8500 SoC under the hood, with a quad-core 2.24GHz CPU, 2GB RAM and will have Android 5.1 pre-installed.

That’s not all the test revealed. The Mi Pad 2 with Intel chipset scored a 985 on the single-core test and a 3268 on multi-core. The original Xiaomi Mi Pad scored a 1113 (single-core) and 3481 (multi-core) back in 2014.

Not much is know about the upcoming tablet. Rumours suggest that the Mi Pad 2 will sport the same 7.9-inch glass found in the original Mi Pad. It is likely that Xiaomi will unveil the Mi Pad 2 along with the Mi 5 on the 3rd of December.

iPad Pro to Arrive Next Week, Pre-Orders Begin On International Websites

iPad Pro was launched in September amidst all the glitz and glamour of the Apple event in San Francisco. Even though this was followed by an immediate release of the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in the market, Pro was kept away from the limelight.

Rumours and speculations had placed 11th of November as the release date for Apple’s newest iPad. Looks like we might be wrong, but only by two days. The iPad Pro is expected to arrive on Friday the 13th next week.iPad Pro

Pre-orders for it have already begun on international websites like Sam’s Club. If you choose to place an order on this website, keep in mind that it’s only offering the Wi-Fi only versions of the 32 GB and 128 GB variants. The two devices are priced at $787 (close to Rs. 52,000) and $937 (close to Rs. 62,000) respectively, surprisingly enough both being lower than Apple’s pricing for them.

The iPhone 6s and 6s Plus party has barely piped down, and now a new Apple device arrives in town. How do you think Indian audiences would respond to it – will the response be lukewarm like to the latest iPhones or will it be enthusiastic? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Here’s Every Gadget James Bond Has Ever Used

Here’s Every Gadget James Bond Has Ever Used

It’s only legit to get super-excited about all the technological advancements happening today. Smartphones are getting thinner, laptops are getting lighter, watches can make calls, and all that jazz. But nothing can match the level of badassness when it comes to technology in James Bond movies.

As far back as 50 years, James Bond films have been synonymous with gadgets and cars, among other things. Speaking about gadgets, Bond does nothing less than a Walther PPK, a watch that’s never quite a simple watch, an Aston Martin with ejector seat and machine guns, to name a few courtesy Q Branch. One wonders why no one before Burger Fiction ever thought of making a video compiling all of Bond’s gadgets. But now there is one and yes, it has every gadget ever used by James Bond. All 193 of them. Make sure you have popcorns in hand for this.

  • Apple Watch Finally Launched in India Starting at Rs. 30,900

Apple Watch Finally Launched in India Starting at Rs. 30,900

Apple released its Watch range in April, and 7 months later the Watch makes it to the Indian market. The Apple Watch has been launched in India starting at Rs. 30,900. The launch comes a couple of weeks after the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus launch in India and just ahead of Diwali.

The Apple Watch will be available at Apple retailers across the country. The Watch comes in a variety of colours including gold, Rose Gold, Space Gray, silver anodized aluminium, polished silver or Space Black stainless steel, and 18-Carat Rose Gold or Yellow Gold.

    Apple watch 0

The Watch is among the more fashionable smartwatches in the market and one point of difference is that the Apple Watch provides a lot more apps and features than what is currently available. It comes in 40 combinations and in two display sizes of 38mm and 42mm across three: Apple Watch Sport, Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch.

    apple watch 2 4

The Silver Aluminium Case and White Sport Band are the basic models that are priced at Rs. 30,900 and Rs. 34, 900 for the 38mm and 42mm, respectively. The price goes up with successive models and bands, the most expensive of which is the Apple Watch Edition (made of 18-carat Rose Gold casing) that starts at Rs. 8.2 lakh for the 38mm variant when paired with the cheapest White Sports Band, Rs. 9.9 lakh for the 42mm one, and the most expensive one in the series is priced at Rs. 14.2 lakh.

    Apple watch Features Design 26

The Hermes design that was showcased at the Apple event last month has not been launched yet. The Watch comes equipped with the Watch OS 2. The Watch needs to be paired with an iPhone (iPhone 5 or higher) that has the latest iOS. The iPhone will then pair itself to the Watch and you can make calls if your iPhone is within 18-feet of the Watch.

The pricing was always expected to be this high. India is still coming to terms with wearable technology and we’re not sure how well the Watch will do here. The doubts are high since one of the major drawbacks of the Apple Watch is that one will not be able to use features that require internet unless one has an iPhone. This limits potential Watch buyers to mainly those who own an iPhone.

The Watch comes preloaded with 1,300 native apps and a total of 13, 000 apps are available in the Watch App Store. No word yet on when online retailers will begin selling the Apple Watch.

  • Sennheiser’s Orpheus: Most Expensive Headphones in the World At $50,000

Sennheiser’s Orpheus: Most Expensive Headphones in the World At $50,000

Sennheiser will soon release it’s new set of headphones, Orpheus with a price tag of $50,000 (no, that’s not a typo) or Rs. 32,75,000. About twenty five years ago, the company had come out with Orpheus HE90, which soon came to be known as the best headphones money can buy. There were only 300 of those made by the company, and they came with an amplifier at a cost of about $16,000.

    Sennheiser Orpheus in 1991
    Sennheiser Orpheus in 1991

After almost a quarter of a century since 1991, Sennheiser is ready with an updated version of the Orpheus. The company had been working on the gadget for over a decade now. German craftsmanship and over 6,000 components that include gold-vaporized ceramic electrodes, platinum-vaporized diaphragms, and Carrara marble amplifier housing from Italy -same as the one used by Michelangelo -all have gone into making this beauty. Clearly, these headphones are not meant for metro rides or listening to music on the laptop.

All these intricately chosen components improve sound quality and audio experience. Digital amplification takes place directly in the headphones and therefore steers clear of any disturbance that might have happened because of cord travel of the sound. Sennheiser plans to make the Orpheus available starting mid-2016 and would keep the production at a 250 piece per year. Time to bring out the piggy bank and start saving up, folks!

  • iPad Pro and New Apple Pencil to Launch in India in November

iPad Pro and New Apple Pencil to Launch in India in November

Following Samsung’s announcement of making its On series phones available in India next month, reports have confirmed 11th November as the date for Apple’s iPad Pro to come to the country. The device was launched in September, along with additional accessories and the new iPhones. Apple iPad Pro 3

Apple had mentioned a November launch for the iPad Pro and now various sources have confirmed the date as eleventh. The Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard -accessories for the new iPad – will also go on sale on the same day. Current pricing of the device in the US marks it at $799 (about Rs. 52,000) while the Pencil costs $99 (about Rs. 6400) and the Smart Keyboard costs $169 (about Rs. 11,000). Click here for the specs of iPad Pro.

After the poor response to iPhone 6s and 6s Plus in the country, let’s see how the iPad is received by buyers. Many users believe that there isn’t a specific purpose for the iPad because all work gets done on laptops and cellphones in India. There isn’t basically a need of an in-between device. iPad Pro thus is not much more than another shiny new toy for tech lovers and Apple enthusiasts, don’t you think?

  • Why Apple Shouldn’t Have Killed the iPod Classic

Why Apple Shouldn’t Have Killed the iPod Classic

When Apple launched the first iPod 14 years ago on October 23, 2001, very few imagined the impact it would create in the way we consume music. For all the hate Apple receives today by dedicated groups out there, even they would have to agree that back then when Apple said it would come out with something revolutionary, it meant it.

The iPod was perhaps one of the best inventions of the 21st century. The device literally changed the way we listen to music and single-handedly dethroned the traditional Walkman and CD player. 13 years later, on September 9, 2014, Apple quietly decided to kill the classic iPod.

    ipod-first-gen

The sixth generation 160GB iPod Classic was the last Apple product in the iPod line to use the original 30-pin iPod connector and the Click Wheel. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the iPod Classic was discontinued because the parts were unavailable and a redesign was unwarranted given the small amount of consumer interest in the product.

Blame it on a generation that was moving towards all things touchscreen, the iPod Classic indeed was seeing low demand. But that doesn’t diminish the fact the Apple had made a serious dent in technology and the music world with the iPod Classic.

    Walkman of the 21st Century

The idea behind the invention of the iPod was to create a portable music device that was not “big and clunky or small and useless”. One of the reasons Apple is what it is today is because its founder, Steve Jobs, was bent upon making technology sleek and beautiful. This is what they wanted to with the music player. Successive generations of the iPod Classic saw not only a sleeker, beautifully crafted device but also having a sturdy construction and a massive storage capacity to the pleasure of music lovers.

The Feel of the Iconic Wheel

    iPod (3rd Gen)

One of the main reasons the iPod Classic was so successful was because of its simplicity. The device had a decent sized screen and a Touch Wheel that was replaced with a Click Wheel with the 3-gen iPod. The wheel made using the iPod ridiculously easy. A scroll from left to right or right to left let you navigate through thousands of songs and artists in your collection. There was  also a center select button, and four auxiliary buttons around the wheel. And that’s really all one needed.

The wheel added that extra bit of flair that came with the device’s sturdy yet sleek design. Navigating through your library was simply too easy. One could even do it without lifting one’s thumb. In all honesty, touchscreens may be the present technology, but even that can’t compete with the wheel’s functionality. Music needed a device that made listeners feel the music; that made them want to listen to music all day. That kind of feel of a personal music player died with the iPod Classic.

A Hundred Albums, A Thousand Songs

It started off with a 5 GB storage and went up to 160 GB by the sixth-gen model. But even an iPod with 30 GB or 60 GB storage was enough for music lovers. The point is that Apple provided a device that had a massive storage for users to keep their entire collection of music all in one place. Spotify and Apple Music is useful in certain circumstances, but you can never get the feeling of owning your own music with them. For years Vinyl collectors bemoaned the emergence of MP3 players as it meant you couldn’t own a physical object. Now music streaming has literally killed the idea of owning music.

    iPod Classic 4
    iPod (6th Gen)

The iPod Classic let you access hundreds of albums and thousands of songs in a single device. The Guardian‘s Will Dunn lamented the demise of the iPod: “There’s still a huge affection for the iPod Classic and it’s not hard to see why – Spotify might offer 20 million songs, but 120GB of music is more than most people need, and your iTunes library doesn’t carry data charges or a subscription fee. Also, I think the Classic is a more distraction-free listening experience – I’m more likely to get through a full album on one.”

    A Pure Music Experience

Today, one is surrounded by the latest in technology. You probably have a phone with 32 GB space or higher. And yes, you do have songs in them too. But they’re still devices that are used primarily for other purposes and can never provide one with the same feel as a dedicated music player. Another point one should remember about the iPod was the massive battery life. You could go through a week of music on a single charge.

    iPod Classic 5

Do we really have a device today that looks and feels like a music player? Even the iPod Touch models don’t really look the part. If you go on Amazon or Flipkart today and type in music players, you’ll be surprised to see that there is not one good music-dedicated device that would take your fancy.

People Still Want a Portable Music Player

It’s true. Technology may have changed, but people haven’t. The need for a small, portable music player still exists in the world. Don’t believe us? Well, when Apple decided to call it a day with the iPod Classic, a lot of people rushed to Apple retailers to buy the last of the remaining stock. The sales of the iPods (what was left of them) suddenly saw a rise and even saw some of them being sold for four times the actual value.

    iPod Classic 0

What one can take away from this is that the news reminded people just how important the music player was. until a few years ago, before streaming become the new thing, music was something that people loved to ‘own’. Steve Jobs was against the idea of music streaming and he pretty much summed up what music meant to him as well as to many others:

“These services treat you like a criminal. And they are subscription-based and we think subscriptions are the wrong path. One of the reasons we think this is because people bought their music for as long as we can remember. When you own your music it never goes away. When you own your music you have a broad set of personal use rights – you can listen to it however you want.”

Maybe instead of discontinuing the iPod Classic, Apple could have thought of ways to refashion it, adding present-day technology while still keeping the ‘Classic’ look and feel. It probably would have been worth a try. Maybe some day a company might come along and bring back the love for music the way Apple did.

  • Everything You Want to Know About 3D Printers

Everything You Want to Know About 3D Printers

3D printers are the next big thing. These devices are touted to bring the industrial age where manufacturing will shift from giant warehouses to homes. The technology has been used to make small tools to houses. 3D printing can truly pave the way to the next generation economy. For those of you still oblivious to this fantastic feat of engineering, we bring you all that you need to know about the technology that might actually change your life.

The 3D printing or additive manufacturing (AM) is a technique by which you can create or recreate a three-dimensional object. The 3D printers are also considered to be industrial robots for their manufacturing aptitude. The technology utilises computer-aided formation of objects by laying successive layers of materials. The materials can vary from plastic to metals like silver, steel, and titanium.

A Chinese company were able to make 10 houses through 3D printing.
A Chinese company was able to make 10 houses through 3D printing.

What can you do with it?

With AM, you can even create complex objects with intricate moving bits. Designers and engineers have created working electric car models in a duration of just 44 hours. Of course, they used an industrial-sized printer, but the fact remains that this technology could bring manufacturing closer to home and decrease the massive amount of investment that goes into bringing the product from factory to shop. The 3D printing is exceptionally economical as it can create complex parts for machines, cars and even airplanes at a fraction of the cost of conventional processes. The printers can be scaled down and up easily depending on the requirement.

The printers are also capable of creating electronic circuitry so it might only be a matter of time before you can get OTA updates for a new phone altogether. This, coupled with technological experiences gained by developments like Project Ara, would help in creating the next generation eco-friendly devices that are also economical.

Human body organ replacements can also be printed out.
Human body organ replacements can also be printed.

The 3D printers are also being used in the health industry. Using biological data, researchers have printed replacement organs for humans. The technology is also being used in food design and has let artists create some cool looking treats.

These printers will come really handy to space travelers. Instead of carrying a massive inventory of spares and tools, they can simply carry a printer on board that will create the spares they need. This will clear more space for human utilisation and make the spacefarers self-sufficient in the long run.

    How does it do it?

3D Printers uses computer aided designs to create printable models.
3D Printers use computer-aided designs to create printable models.

The first step in the process of 3D printing is acquiring the 3D model of the object that you want to print. This can be done manually by using modelling softwares. There has been an influx of a lot of softwares intended to print 3D objects. You can easily get free softwares where you can create rudimentary objects or if you have the stomach for it, you can go for professional softwares like 3ds Max or Autodesk Maya.

There are also a lot of websites that offer predesigned objects that you can download. Websites like Thingiverse have a lot of options to choose from to try out your hand at creating stuff off computer designs right in your homes.

And if that’s still out of your technological proficiency, then the printers itself lets you scan the images that you are trying to recreate. It’s easier than easy with the 3D printing.

    Where can I get it?

Printing powerhouse HP has also come up with its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer.
Printing powerhouse HP has also come up with its Multi Jet Fusion 3D printer.

Presently, the devices cost truly a bomb, but for what they can do, they are a bang for the bucks. Printers like the Makerbot come at a premium price of Rs. 3,50,000, which may actually be cheap for an enterprise segment. You can also get lower-priced models for home usage for just above a lakh rupees, and they will give you great ease in making prototypes. Even big brands have seen the potential of the technology and have started working on their own models, one of the prominent names is HP’s Multi Jet Fusion technology.

The 3D printing revolution is here, and it needs its revolutionaries. Manufacturing science is a great area of study that really require people. If you are an engineering student looking for a field of study, then manufacturing should be it. And if you are a kind of person who likes to create the future, keep your eyes on the 3D printers, they are about to change the world.

  • The Future is Here with the New Hendo Hoverboard

The Future is Here with the New Hendo Hoverboard

Yesterday was Back to the Future Day around the world. For those who aren’t familiar with the concept, Back to the Future Day comes only once a lifetime, and that was on 21st October, 2015. This day is celebrated because in 1989’s Back to the Future II film, Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel 26 years to the future and land on October 21st, 2015. So naturally, fans of the film around the world were excited to have finally reached the ‘future’.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plwX5NtF530

One of the things that makes the day so exciting is that in the movie, the 2015 future had a hoard of futuristic technology like self-tying shoes, hoverboard, artificial intelligence and all that jazz. And what’s more exciting is that the movie got most of the predictions right.

    hendo-hoverboard-v2-copy

We celebrated the day in our own way as well by listing 6 techs that the movie predicted correctly about 2015. Companies like Nike were also paying homage to the cult franchise by launching self-tying shoes that were seen in the movie. But no Back to the Future Day is complete without a hoverboard. So the makers behind the Hendo overboard also joined the celebration with their newest version of the hoverboard.

Arx Pax teased new details about the hoverboard last week, like better battery life, USB connectivity, stronger hover engines, and a safety kill switch. The new design looks quite spectacular and in keeping with the future.

    hovering

The skateboard deck sits on traditional skateboard trucks, which is also where four hover engines connect to the main body. This will help riders shift their weight around much like a traditional skateboard. Another cool piece of information is that the new hoverboard is designed by none other than pro-skater Tony Hawk.

Just to be clear, none of the Hendo Hoverboards run on the street. The magnets below the board need a copper flooring to repel off in order to hover. So you can push off and hover as as long as there is a copper runway. But it’s a start.

    Hendo Hoverboard

The new hoverboard will first go to Kickstarter backers who pledged $10,000 to the company last year. Are Pax has said that the backers were companies who wish to open hoverboard parks of their own. The company has also stated that the hover boards won’t be consumer ready but there has been great progress in the hovering technology that would even make Marty proud. And it does bring the dream of owning your own overboard closer than ever.
