  • Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite Vs The Nokia 2 – Battle Of The 7 Grand Phones

Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite Vs The Nokia 2 – Battle Of The 7 Grand Phones

Smartphones nowadays, are no longer a luxury. Smartphones have become an affordable necessity that keeps on moving in two directions. On one hand, we saw the thousand dollar or the “1 lakh” barrier being crossed by the iPhone X this year, and on the other hand we have much more affordable Android phones which do not skim down on quality.

Xiaomi and HMD Global recently launched two Android phones at the same price tag of Rs 6999. While Xiaomi has slowly reached the pinnacle of the Indian smartphone market, HMD Global and Nokia are still trying to find its feet after a lengthy absence from the scene.

Today, lets stack the two budget giants against each other and see which phone trumps the other one!

Specifications Xiaomi Redmi Y1 Lite Nokia 2

On pure specifications, the Redmi Y1 Lite is ahead of the Nokia 2 in almost every aspect except the battery. MIUI is an Android skin people love to hate, and it depends on you whether you prefer the customisability but, a certain level of unpredictability of this skin.

However, if you are on the lookout for a secondary device which you need just for calling, then a 4100 mAh battery and stock Android OS could be the way to go.

  • Apple Is Working On A Foldable Device

Apple Is Working On A Foldable Device

Apple might be working on a foldable device similar to what the Samsung Galaxy X would be. After a report claimed that Apple has been working on this new foldable iPhone, a patent application has revealed what Apple might have in store for its foldable iPhone.

Apple has been known to perfect a technology and implement it in their iPhones rather than being the first to implement and under tested technology. Screen embedded fingerprint sensor, which was expected to feature in the iPhone X now seems like a 2018 iPhone feature as Apple will have ample time to test it out first.

The iPhone X has a foldable display as well, which folds at the bottom and can’t be seen while using the phone. This is the trick that makes the edge-to-edge screen design possible, since Apple is able to hide the display controller at the bottom of the panel.

The new patent application describes “Electronic Devices With Flexible Displays.” Apple filed the patent on the 22nd of September, 2016 which means it’s a relatively new invention.

The image reveals that a foldable iPhone would have an all screen design (14, 14E, 14M) that would bend around an axis (16), with a central flexible display area (14M) separating two screen halves that may be flat (14E).

Such a device could bend so that the 14E screen areas would face each other, or away from each other. Should both modes be available to users, then a foldable iPhone may be used as a regular iPhone with displays on both sides, or like a smaller iPad.

The patent application also mentions that micro-LEDs might be used as the potential display technology for this device. This is an interesting piece of information considering that reports already say that Apple is exploring micro-LED display technology as a replacement for LCD and/or OLED display panels.

It will be interesting to see how the first generation foldable iPhone will fare against the Samsung Galaxy X when it does launch in the market for average consumers.

  • New Software Updates Will Fix The OnePlus 5T Camera

New Software Updates Will Fix The OnePlus 5T Camera

OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei took to OnePlus’ forums to share that the OnePlus 5T will receive an update that appears to improve the cameras’ low-light performance, particularly when it comes to sharpness.

When OnePlus launched the OnePlus 5 earlier this year, there was a lot of talk around its camera. OnePlus itself marketed the phone’s camera extensively and showed off the dual-camera setup at the back. With the OnePlus 5T, the Chinese smartphone maker has gone with a different dual camera setup. The secondary telephoto lens is replaced with a 20MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture meaning, in theory, the OnePlus 5T should have good low-light performance.

But, as we noted in our full review, the OnePlus 5T doesn’t perform well under lowlight at all and would need a serious software update to fix the processing of the images.

The update will also try to improve the front-facing camera when it comes to more natural exposure in images taken from it. According to OnePlus, it will test the update with a private group next week, with a public roll-out scheduled for early December.

It is to be seen till what extent these updates will “fix” the camera performance of the OnePlus 5T. In the past, we have seen other smartphone makers also trying to improve the camera performance through software updates. Essential is a prime example of that, and how the OnePlus 5T will perform once these updates are rolled out will be interesting to see.

  • Razer Phone Could Be Heading To India Soon

Razer Phone Could Be Heading To India Soon

Razer, one of the most famous gaming hardware makers in the world recently launched the Razer Phone. It is a phone, that company claims is made for gamers and has some of the best specs in the market. At its launch, it was priced at US $699 and it has now arrived in Asia at a higher price of US $790.

    Razer’s CEO said:

While we founded Razer in California, US, I’m a Singaporean still and I’m very excited to make Singapore the first country in Asia to release the Razer Phone.

A lot of global phones first enter other Asian markets before launching in India. India recently surpassed the US as the second largest smartphone market in the world thanks to the growing population and cheaper internet plans. To believe that Razer will launch the phone in India is not a far-fetched thought. The price of the Razer Phone in India, however, will be crucial for its success in the country.

The smartphone has a 5.72-inch IGZO display with 120Hz refresh rate which reinstates that the phone is targeted at gamers. Another interesting aspect here is the front-firing dual speakers. With bezels getting thinner, the trend of front-firing stereo speakers appears to be dying as well. The Pixel 2 XL managed to squeeze in stereo speakers with slightly larger bezels that its competitors. The Razer phone has bezels similar to a Sony smartphone with front-firing speakers with Dolby Atmos sound and amplifiers which are certified by THX.

Under the hood, the Razer Phone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 64GB onboard storage which can be expanded up to 2TB via microSD card. The Razer Phone will come equipped with special games which are specifically reprogrammed with a 2K display and 120Hz refresh rate like Tekken, Legend Of Valor and more.

According to Tom Moss, Razer was able to use the technical know-how accumulated over many years in heat dissipation for the Razer Phone. A heat pipe and two-layer heat spreader ensure that the smartphone does not overheat in continuous use and under full load. Bad news for fans of the good old headphone jack, because the Razer Phone doesn’t have a 3.5mm jack on the phone itself. To connect analogue headphones, there is a USB type C dongle, which has a THX-certified DAC inside. The fingerprint sensor is housed inside the lock/unlock button.

Razer also introduced a “game booster” feature which refers to additional software functions that adjust the clock rate of the processor and the resolution of the display, depending on the app requirements. The user can define whether the four performance cores of the Snapdragon 835 SoC should perform their service at full or lower clock rate.

The device is powered by a 4000 mAh battery and runs Android 7.1 Nougat.

The Razer phone has a 12MP wide-angle lens + 12MP telephoto lens setup at the back. The wide angle lens is the full beam lens with an aperture of f/1.75 and the telephoto lens with an aperture of f/2.6. The telephoto lens allows for portrait mode images and also bokeh effect photos. On the front of the device is an 8MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture.

Under the hood, the smartphone has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 chipset which succeeds the entry level Snapdragon 210 chipset. The Snapdragon 212 has a quad-core ARM Cortex  A7 processor clocked at 1.3 GHz and is coupled with the Adreno 304 GPU. The Nokia 2 has 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of onboard storage which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card.

  • Xiaomi Teases New ‘Made In India’ Smartphone Launch

Xiaomi Teases New ‘Made In India’ Smartphone Launch

Xiaomi India recently announced the opening of a new facility in India strictly dedicated to making its new power bank, the Mi Power Bank 2i. Now, it appears that a new smartphone specifically made in India and for the Indian audience, will be launched very soon.

In the tweet, it is visible that Xiaomi is clearly targeting the Indian audience with a smartphone that will be a part of its ‘Make In India’ project. So far, most of the smartphones from Xiaomi that launch in India are first launched in China and then renamed for the Indian audience and unveiled in India.

The recently launched Xiaomi Mi A1 was also just the Xiaomi Mi 5X which was launched in China but, with stock Android OS.

Xiaomi could launch a smartphone under the Rs 5000 bracket which will compete with the likes of other Indian brands.

This new phone could even be the Redmi Note 5 which will make sense, as the Redmi Note 4 has been the company’s most successful smartphone in India. The Redmi Note 5 already has a lot of anticipation in the Indian market and if the phone is a part of the company’s ‘Make In India’ project, then it will increase the Redmi Note 5’s desirability even more.

Xiaomi has already launched about 8 devices in India so far, and in a recent chat with Mr. Manu Kumar Jain, VP of Xiaomi, he said that the company is satisfied with the products it has in all the price segments. What is missing however, is a phone made in India, and this could be Xiaomi’s entry to that smartphone market.

    Leaked Redmi Note 5

According to a recent leak of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5, the Redmi Note 5 will have Snapdragon 625 chipset. The phone also has a 5.99 inch display with a very 2017-like 18:9 ratio and Full HD+ (2160 x 1080 px) resolution.

The phone shows 54GB of storage available, meaning that the variant in question here is the 64GB unit. There is at least one camera with a 12 MP sensor and the smartphone runs on Android 7.1.2 Nougat.

The device appears to be powered by a 4000 mAh battery and due to thin bezels, the fingerprint sensor is placed at the back of the phone, much like the Redmi Note 4.

  • Samsung Galaxy S9 And Galaxy S9+ Could Debut At CES 2018

Samsung Galaxy S9 And Galaxy S9+ Could Debut At CES 2018

If you like tech and follow the news consistently, you must have a read a few Galaxy S9 leaks here and there. Most of them point towards a CES launch for the Galaxy S9 and its bigger sibling. A new report has also claimed that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be unveiled during CES in February 2018 which will be held in Barcelona, Spain.

It further claims that even though the two flagship phones will make their debut at CES, 2018, there will be a launch event in March where the two phones will be officially launched and all the details of the two phones will be made official. Big tech companies like Samsung, LG and more, use CES to showcase its new products and innovative technologies that companies are currently working on, however, the marquee showcases are usually of the next big flagship phone of the year since CES is held fairly early on in the year.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ To Have Similar All-Glass Design

The Galaxy S9 series will be nearly identical to their predecessors and will only include some hardware upgrades. The Galaxy S9 is reportedly codenamed Star 1 and will bear the model number SM-G960, while the Galaxy S9+ will be codenamed Star 2 and will have the model number SM-G965.

The display size of both the phones will be identical to their 2017 counterparts with the Galaxy S9 sporting a 5.8-inch Super AMOLED display while the Galaxy S9+ will have a 6.2-inch display. The bezels will be thinner than the previous generation devices with the infamous curved edges and “Infinity Display.”

    Galaxy S8’s infinity Display

Under the hood, both the devices are expected to have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset for the US variant and Exynos 9810 for the rest of countries. While the Galaxy S9 will have 4GB of RAM, the bigger variant will have 6GB of RAM. The 2018 flagship phones will also have AKG stereo speakers and will come bundled with AKG earphones as well, similar to the Galaxy S8/S8+.

You may also like –  Samsung Galaxy S9 To Take On iPhone X’s Face ID

Unlike 2017, where there were barely any differentiating factors between the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+, Samsung is planning something different for 2018. It appears that the Galaxy S9 will have a single camera at the back while the Galaxy S9+ will have a dual camera setup at the back. This will give consumers extra incentive to spend more money on the Galaxy S9+.

In terms of pricing, it won’t be a surprise if the Galaxy S9+ surpasses the Galaxy Note8 price and touch the thousand dollar mark, similar to the iPhone X.

  • Samsung Galaxy A5 And Its Infinity Display Leaked

Samsung Galaxy A5 And Its Infinity Display Leaked

There have been multiple reports that Samsung’s flagship feature, the Infinity Display will trickle down to its mid-range devices in 2018. The Galaxy A series is Samsung’s mid-range lineup which has always boasted of some good specifications and camera performances. The Galaxy A5 (2018) will apparently sport a bezel-less display as well and new leaked images reveal just that.

One of the main concerns for future Galaxy A5 suitors has to be the fingerprint sensor. Not the quality of it, but, the placement. From the leaked images, it appears that Samsung seems to have fixed that issue. On the Galaxy A5 2018, the fingerprint sensor will be placed below the single camera lens.

Another interesting thing to note in the images is that isolated button on the left side of the phone just below the volume rockers. It seems like the infamous Bixby button will also trickle down to the mid-rangers. Upon its release, the AI assistant from Samsung received a lot of flak for being a less useful version of Google Assistant and a hardware button on the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note8 dedicated to Bixby was a clear push by the company. A few days after the launch of the Galaxy S8 and S8+, Samsung even stopped the remapping of the button.

The Galaxy A5 (2018) will probably officially launch in January, along with the Galaxy A7 (2018). It should sport the Exynos 7885 SoC or the Snapdragon 660 (depending on market). The device could have either 4GB or 6GB of RAM along with expandable storage. While Android 8.0 Oreowas officially released back in August, don’t be surprised if the two phones launching in 2018 will still run Android 7.1.1 Nougat.

The new trend of truly wireless earbuds has been dominated by Apple’s infamous AirPods in the US. According to NPD Group, the Apple AirPods, which launched last year along with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus account for 85% of the total wireless earbuds sale in the American market.

Apple AirPods launched with Apple’s W1 chip which let the users seamlessly interact with their iPhones using the earbuds. People already a part of the Apple ecosystem saw the convenience of having the AirPods and decided to look past the appearance of the earbuds which was heavily panned during the time of its launch. “With a use case centering on frictionless access to Siri and other tasks initiated by voice, AirPods really act as an extension of the iPhone,” Ben Arnold, Industry Analyst wrote in the research note for NPD Group.

Apple’s decision to remove the headphone jack from the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus last year was met with widespread scepticism as majority of smartphone users still use wired headphones and headphone makers had not yet entered the realm of lightning post or USB C headphones. The AirPods was Apple’s solution to that and an indication that Apple is well and truly on its way to make a port-less iPhone. The ease of connecting the AirPods to your Apple devices proved decisive in its record sales in the past year, even though there are better sounding headphones at a cheaper price available in the market.

Following Apple’s footsteps, a lot of big companies like Samsung and recently, Sony released their versions of the truly wireless earbuds and prolific headphone makers like B&O have also entered the premium earbuds market. A report by Gartner revealed that the sales of truly wireless earbuds will hit the 150 million sales mark in 2017. This suggests that people have definitely formed a liking for these earphones and are confident of not misplacing them within a week!

  • BlackBerry KEYone Successor Spotted On GeekBench

BlackBerry KEYone Successor Spotted On GeekBench

BlackBerry has been the flag bearer of sorts when it comes to Android phones with a physical keyboard. In early 2017, BlackBerry launched the KEYone with a physical keyboard and mid-range specifications. It looks like a successor to the KEYone is on the cards for the Canadian company.

The name of the device in question is “QUALCOMM BBF100-1”. As a reference, the BlackBerry Motion model number is BBD-100-X while the BlackBerry KEYone has the model number BBB100-X where X is a number depending on the region. According to the listing, the alleged BlackBerry KEYone successor will run Android 8.0 Oreo out of the box will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset. Another interesting aspect here is that the smartphone will have 6GB of RAM which is usually associated with flagship smartphones.

    BlackBerry KEYone

The BlackBerry “KEYtwo” will have a QWERTY keyboard and it will be interesting how BlackBerry and TCL integrate the keyboard with a full-fledged touchscreen like the KEYone.

OnePlus 6T Isn’t A Guarantee, Says OnePlus Co-Founder Carl Pei

In an AMA hosted by OnePlus for the newly launched OnePlus 5T, Carl Pei answered a few important questions. One forum user asked whether or not OnePlus fans should expect a ‘T’ model every year from now on. Knowing the launch pattern of a company helps a consumer plan their purchase and decide when they want to upgrade. OnePlus Co-founder Carl Pei was not able to give a definitive answer to the question:

We’ll make a second T device if there’s enough new technology that’s useful to our users. As of now, we still haven’t decided whether we have enough upgrades next year for a T device.

Back in June, when the OnePlus 5 was launched, it raised a few questions about what the OnePlus 5 could’ve been, especially compared to other 2017 flagship phones at the time. In November, the Chinese smartphone maker launched the OnePlus 5T, it is the phone that the OnePlus 5 could have, or rather should have been.

When the OnePlus 5T was launched, and especially when it was confirmed that the OnePlus 5 will be discontinued, barely six months after its launch, it irked the OnePlus loyalists. If not a loyalist, a smartphone enthusiast or an average consumer who bought the OnePlus 5 must feel a little bad for not holding off on their credit cards a but longer.

This begs the question, whether the OnePlus 6 will be received as well as the OnePlus 5 or the OnePlus 5T? It is possible that after noticing the launch pattern of OnePlus in the past two years, consumers might wait for the ‘T’ model and not take the original variant too seriously.
