  • Google I/O 2019 Dates And Venue Announced

Google I/O 2019 Dates And Venue Announced

Every year, Google shows their software prowess and their hardware capability with the Google I/O. Last year, it was the human like AI calling project called Google Duplex that took everyone’s attention. Google also announced the release of Android P beta to phone from different manufacturers other than Google, which was a big step.

So because of all this, its no surprise people are eager and excited to know what Google has in store for us this year. And it seems like you don’t have to wait much longer. Google CEO Sundar Pichai has finally announced the dates and the venue for Google I/O 2019.

Talking on Twitter, Pichai shared an image and announced that the annual event will take place from May 7 to May 9 in the Shoreline Amphitheatre. The venue and dates are not surprising though, as Google has always chosen similar dates for the event. The venue too, will be familiar for most regulars as its not the first time Google is hosting the I/O there.

What to expect from Google I/O 2019?

Google I/O has mostly been about the developing technologies at Google and this year will be no different. It is expected that Google will enrol more Smartphone brands in the Android Q beta, to take the next step in eliminating Android fragmentation. New exciting features in Android Q are also expected to be announced. Google may also show new developments to their Assistant, with  things like AI coming more into the picture.

  • Apple Will Now Pay The Winners Of Its “Shot On iPhone” Photo Contest

Apple Will Now Pay The Winners Of Its “Shot On iPhone” Photo Contest

Earlier this week, Apple announced the “Shot on iPhone” contests for photographers who wanted to showcase their talent. The pictures would be judged by a panel of 10 professionals and the winners would get a spot in Apple billboards across the world.

The contest asks the users of the latest iPhones in town, namely the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and the iPhone XR to submit their best photos via Twitter, Instagram, email, or Weibo. The 10 best photos — selected by a panel of judges that includes Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller and former White House photographer Pete Souza will be featured “on billboards in select cities, Apple retail stores and online,” according to the contest site.

Well, Apple might’ve thought that exposure would be enough for them to participate but after facing a serious backlash for not paying the winning photographers anything, Apple has updated the contents on its website, in the original press release about the contest.

First spotted by The Verge, the new paragraph reads, “Apple believes strongly that artists should be compensated for their work. Photographers who shoot the final 10 winning photos will receive a licensing fee for use of such photos on billboards and other Apple marketing channels.”

Apple has also updated their rules in a PDF from “Prize has no cash value” has changed to “Winners will receive a licensing fee for use on billboards and other Apple marketing channels.” Considering the past, Apple hasn’t gotten out of their way much to correct their mistakes, not even admitting they made one in the first place in some cases.

Details as to the amount the winners will be paid are unclear. Some photographers suggested earlier this week that Apple pay $10,000 per photo to the winners, though others argued that exposure should be payment enough. However, now that Apple has decided to give a fee to the winners rather than just relying on exposure by them, it may be expected that more people come on board the idea of entering the contest, which is supposed to take place until February 7.

  • Disappointing Geekbench Score For Samsung S10+

Disappointing Geekbench Score For Samsung S10+

The most highly anticipated phones from Samsung’s stable have always been their Galaxy S series. This year, they will have three or four variants of the phone. There will be an affordable Lite version as well. Just a few days back, it was revealed that the Galaxy S10 will have 6GB RAM and Android 9 OS out of the box. It was also seen on the Geekbench score that the phone would be powered by an Exynos 9820 SoC.

Now new scores have surfaced. It seems like two of the Samsung’s flagship phone variants will be powered by Snapdragon 855 as well. With Samsung phones, it is often observed that the Exynos processors score considerably lesser than the phones powered by Snapdragon’s latest SoCs. The S10+ proves that point yet again.

    Source – nashvillechatter
    Geekbench Scores

The two variants of the S10+ have one that features an Exynos 9820 and Snapdragon 855. The one with the Snapdragon scores 3413 on Single Core and 10256 on Multi Core. On the other hand, the S10+ with the Exynos processor scores 3248 on Single Core and a meagre 7999 on Multi Core. It is also noteworthy that this score is even lower than the non- plus version. That version scored a decent 4382 on Single Core and 9570 on Multi Core. This version also features the same Exynos processor.

    Rumours

Other rumours that have made headlines regarding the phone include a punch hole camera at the front, better battery among other things. A tenyearchallenge teaser by Samsung was recently shared by a popular tipster on a social networking website. This might give us indication of what else is to come from Samsung. The teaser showcases two camera styles. One having a vertical four camera layout and another with three cameras at the back. The teaser also shows a floating phone but we are not sure if the company just wants to show that it is waterproof, or the phone will actually float!

The launch of the Samsung S10, S10 Lite and S10+ are scheduled for February 20 and we will just have to wait and see how the phone performs and how it is priced to get a better idea of it’s value for money.

  • SpaceX Successfully Launches Its First Mission Of 2019

SpaceX Successfully Launches Its First Mission Of 2019

SpaceX, short for Space Exploration Technologies Corp is a privately owned American company that manufactures aerospace vehicles and offers space transportation services. The company was founded in 2002 and has since developed two lineups of aerospace vehicles which are Falcon and Dragon. SpaceX has successfully developed orbital rockets that are capable of being reused. This feature allows SpaceX rockets to drastically reduce the costs of launching satellites in and around earth’s orbit. On 11 January 2019, the company successfully launched its first rocket of the year.

Falcon 9 Successfully Launches The Last Batch Of Iridium Satellites

SpaceX previously signed a contract with Iridium Communications to launch 75 in-orbit satellites that will update Iridium’s aging space fleet. The new fleet of satellites is called Iridium NEXT constellation and it will replace the original fleet of the company that was launched between the year 1997 and 2002.

The satellites owned by Iridium Communications are used for worldwide voice and data communication from hand-held satellite phones and other transceiver units. The satellite network owned by Iridium Communications is unique in its own manner as it is able to provide coverage anywhere on Earth, including oceans, airways and poles.

SpaceX rockets have been launching these satellites in batches of 10 except for one flight that launched 5 satellites. The latest launch will be carried out in 10 minutes after which the company plans to touch down the Falcon 9 rocket on a drone ship in the middle of the ocean.

Previously a Falcon 9 rocket that was supposed to land back was botched. The rocket was intended to land on a concrete pad on the Florida coast but instead, it ended up in the ocean. According to the live stream provided by the company, the Falcon 9 has indeed launched the Iridium Satellites and successfully landed unharmed. This landing marks the 33rd successful landing of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket core.

  • Chinese Rover Shares First Photo Of The Far Side Of The Moon

Chinese Rover Shares First Photo Of The Far Side Of The Moon

China has sent two robots to the moon! The term ‘Over the moon’ has a new meaning now because no human has ever been to the far side. Despite several pop culture references, it isn’t actually dark. And we know that because the rovers are now sending us images!

What is Far Side Of The Moon?

For the uninitiated, we only see one side of the moon from earth. This side is called the near side. This is because the moon takes roughly the same time to orbit the Earth as it takes to spin around it’s axis. It is the first time that a rocket has landed on the far side as well. However, it isn’t the first time that the far side has been photographed. Luna 3, a Soviet spacecraft did photograph the far side of the Moon in 1959.  Sometimes the far side is referred to as the dark side because we know very little about that area, hence the term ‘dark’. The problem with sending machines to the dark side is that it is so far away that it becomes extremely difficult to communicate with the robots.

China has overcome this problem by sending a satellite named Queqiao, which communicates with the rover and relays information to and from the rover back to earth. China has sent a rover along with a lander as part of Chang’e-4 mission. The robotic lander and rover is called Yutu-2. The rover and lander was launched 7 December 2018 and entered orbit around the Moon on 12 December 2018. It landed at 10:26AM Thursday, Beijing time.

    Mission Objectives

The photos that it has sent shows a barren, desert-like surface with craters. The mission of the rover and lander, apart from documenting the area, also involves scientific research as well.  It will be studying the geophysics of the landing zone, researching solar bursts, gather radiation dosimetry for future human exploration of the Moon among other important things. However, the most important payload it carries is a 3 kg sealed “biosphere” with seeds and insect eggs to test whether plants and insects could hatch and grow. If successful, this might mean that there is a bright future for humankind’s survival on this barren satellite.

  • Supersonic Jet, Boom, Will be The First After Concorde Was Grounded in 2003

Supersonic Jet, Boom, Will be The First After Concorde Was Grounded in 2003

Technology as we know it always moves forward but in one single case, humankind moved back. We are of course talking about supersonic travel. After a 30 year run, the famous (or infamous) Concorde was retired in 2003 and with that the hopes and dreams of supersonic passenger air travel was parked indefinitely.

But in the recent past, many companies have rekindled that dream and have started working on making supersonic jets that can ferry passengers at or above the speed of sound! While many companies have started to work on this, Boom Technology has shown the most promise in terms of creating a mainstream supersonic airliner, which is practical, reliable, and economic.

The American startup had, with the backing of Richard Branson and Virgin, announced that they will turn the supersonic air travel into a reality again from just an engineering concept. The Boom Supersonic will fly at a speed of Mach 2.2 which is 1,300 kn or 2,300 km/h. To put things into perspective, a normal jet such as a Boeing 737 has a speed of approximately 938 km/h.

    Why Concorde Failed

There were two broad reasons for Concorde’s failure, and ultimately demise. One of the main reason was the fact that supersonic travel was not economic and the second was a horrible plane crash that gave the concord a lot of bad press. There were reports of metal parts of the Concorde bending out of shape due to the high stress faced during flight, which had caused the crash.

These aircraft were plying very frequently between routes connecting the busy cities such as London and New York.

After the launch of Concorde, many aerospace journalists completely wrote off the Concorde as an expensive experiment. They reported that it was too small, too noisy and too expensive to operate. But there was a time when the demand was so high that British Airways hiked prices to match the higher price expectations of the passengers. Concorde was running at a profit!

However, in April 2003, both Air France and British Airways simultaneously announced they would retire Concorde.

    So What Happened?

Why was an Airplane which was running in profits suddenly face retirement?

The Concorde planes which were built in the 1970’s, consumed huge amounts of fuel. These planes were becoming expensive to maintain and an overhaul was suggested. However, according to a British Airways executive, in 2003 the estimated bill was up to £40 million for an overhaul.

The failing economy did not help either, thus having to reduce prices on business travel. It was becoming extremely hard to break even as passengers started to value their money more than time (that they save by supersonic travel). The sound of the supersonic jets were also another issue the companies couldn’t tackle. The extreme sonic boom that hurls the jet into supersonic speeds made the planes un-flyable in populated areas.

Boom has however said that it expects its supersonic boom to be “at least 30 times quieter than Concorde’s”. This has been made possible due to the advancement in technology over the years. The second major hurdle that Concorde faced which became the final nail in it’s coffin was a massive plane crash.

    The Plane Crash

The 4590 Air France flight was an international charter flight from Paris to New York City on the Aérospatiale-BAC Concorde. The flight had 100 passengers. It crashed shortly after take-off as the plane ran over debris left by another aircraft on the runway, which blew a tyre which in turn punctured the fuel tank. The plane crashed into a nearby hotel killing all 100 passengers and nine crew along with 4 people in the hotel. This crash happened on 25 July 2000, just 3 years before the retirement of Concorde.

After the crash, it was reported that the passenger count for supersonic travel reduced significantly. This was due to the fact that people started to consider supersonic travel unsafe. All Concordes were grounded, pending an investigation into the cause of the crash and possible remedies. Commercial service was resumed in November 2001. This came after a £17m safety improvement service but only survived for two more years after that.

Present And Future Of Supersonic Travel

Cut to present, the technology has improved drastically, flight travel is safer than ever and demands are high. With companies like Boom Technologies being backed by big names such as Virgin and Japan Airlines (JAL) commercially viable supersonic flights don’t look to be too far away. The full-size Boom, which would carry up to 55 passengers is targeted for tests in 2020. It will have an all-business-class configuration.

The company will first build the “Baby Boom”, a prototype of the full size Boom airplane that will eventually take passengers supersonic.

  • Most Anticipated Smartphones Of 2019

    Most Anticipated Smartphones Of 2019

The year 2018 is over and it has been a great year for smartphones around the world. From the notch becoming a trend to retractable cameras and in-display fingerprint sensors. Smartphones saw a lot of innovations this year. However, for 2019 there is a lot more to be seen! Each and every company is racing towards making the experience of using a smartphone better and more immersive and that means the notch has to go. Everything from foldable displays, dual displays, in-display cameras and a lot more can be expected from the year to come. In this article, we find out what the most anticipated phones of 2019 are.

    Samsung Galaxy S10

Rumors were doing the rounds that the Galaxy S10 would have a folding display that Samsung is working on. But now it seems Samsung will have two separate products – the smartphone and the tablet that folds up to become a phone. In a recent event, the company showed us an early prototype of the folding tablet and we might see it sooner than expected.

The base model Galaxy S10 will have a flat screen design with in-display front cameras and will have an edge to edge screen. Leaks also suggest that there will be three different variants of the phone. Two with an Edge display while one without.

    Apple iPhone XI

Apple has always been tight-lipped about their new phones but the 2019 upgrades might not be too revolutionary. It has been widely reported that the iPhone will still feature the notch in its 2019 version and may finally do away with it in 2020. A recent report suggests that Apple is teaming up with Sony to build 3D cameras that will provide more security and will bring about change in the way we photograph and view things.

Sony has also revealed that their 3D camera technology will be ready in 2019 itself and will be mass produced for consumers this year. Apple iPhones are known for their security features and great cameras. the company may use this technology this year itself or save it for the next big design change in 2020.

    OnePlus 7

Oneplus devices are one of the most anticipated devices every year due to their ‘budget flagship’ tag. OnePlus 7 will most probably see it’s launch around midsummer in 2019. The device is anticipated to have a small camera hole under the screen and is rumored to have smaller bezels. The in- display fingerprint sensor stays.

We are still not sure if Oneplus 7 will finally see an IP rating and a wireless charging feature or not but a recently leaked photo shows the company’s executives holding a phone with a huge circular shaped camera design at the back that is reminiscent of the Lumia 1020.

Pixel 3 Lite and Pixel 4

Users were extremely unhappy to see the hideously big notch on this years Pixel device. Google being new to the hardware space, might take a little time to understand the trends in the smartphone industry. However, we can expect great things from the Pixel 4.

Keeping to the tradition, we can expect one of the best cameras on a smartphone from the Pixel 4 as is the case with all Pixel devices. We can also expect a bigger screen and no notch or a very small notch. There have been no leaks so far regarding the next generation Pixel.

    Huawei P30

As 5G knocks on the door of technology, most manufacturers are trying their best to re-imagine their upcoming phones with 5G. Huawei is no exception and the company’s new phone, the Huawei P30, will be 5G enabled. According to some renders, the Huawei P30 might feature 4 cameras at the back with a teardrop notch in front. The phone will look sleek and have very little in terms of bezels. It is expected to feature a Kirin 985 CPU and might sport 8GB/10GB of RAM. Reverse Wireless charge is expected to come to the P30.

    Xiaomi Poco F2

Xiaomi created a revolution with the launch of the Poco F1 which featured a Snapdragon 845 on a budget smartphone. The Snapdragon 845 was always seen in expensive flagship phones and a few lower price point flagships but a budget phone with the latest CPU offering was unheard of. Xiaomi quickly garnered a lot of support for the Poco lineup and now 2019 might see the second version of the phone.

According to a Geekbench listing, Poco F2 might not sport the latest Snapdragon 855 that almost all high end phones will feature in the coming year. The Poco F2 is reported to receive very little changes compared to its predecessor. The phone will have 6GB of RAM and will be loaded with Android Pie out of the box. It will be interesting to see what price point Xiaomi places this phone at and how it is welcomed by the Poco F1 fans.

  • Samsung Granted Patent For 3D Hologram Display

Samsung Granted Patent For 3D Hologram Display

Earlier this year, Samsung had filed a patent for a Hologram reproducing display which has now been granted. The patents were submitted to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) and USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office). The patent was published on 29th November and it explains how a 3D image can be projected on the screen.

    How Does It Work?

The display has a relay lens which contains a series of microlenses. The relay lens has a spatial light modulator (SLM) with a filter which ensures the hologram pattern is correctly reproduced. By using the intervention of light, a high-quality holographic image can be projected. The patent is well comprehended and it explains in detail how various lenses are used to project the image.

    Will We See It?

It is hard to predict when a Samsung smartphone with this display technology will be officially released. Although the patent shows concrete evidence that Samsung can make the technology work, packing this technology into a fully functional smartphone will take some time.

    3D Displays From Other Companies

A lot of companies in the past have experimented with 3D Hologram displays but nobody has been successful to make it mainstream. Earlier this year, Red showcased their Hydrogen One smartphone which can produce a 3D image without having to use a pair of 3D glasses. The 3D images are just displayed on the screen and not projected in the air.

The level of immersion enables new forms of computing in which the user’s desktop could be the living room.

  • Samsung Files Patents For New Notch Designs

Samsung Files Patents For New Notch Designs

Samsung held a developers conference last month where they showcased a variety of display notch designs. The designs included an Infinity-O, Infinity-U, and Infinity-V display notch designs. On December 10, Samsung launched the Galaxy A8s smartphone which has an Infinity-O display. The smartphone has a lateral cutout in the display for the front-facing selfie camera. Samsung has also filed patents for six other notch designs. The new patents seem to be a combination of the Infinity-O and the Infinity-U display notch designs.

    New Notch Designs

Samsung filed the patents for six new notch designs to the KIPO (Korean Intellectual Property Office) which were granted on 10 December 2018. According to the patents, the height of the notch varies as per different models. Out of the six designs, the notch in four patents is placed below the bezel. While two patents reveal notches that are partly integrated into the bezel. The patent number 3 in this list has a “U” shaped cutout above the top bezel. Although its purpose is unclear as of now, it might be used to attach an accessor or this could be the earpiece of the phone. Certainly, these patents are of less importance to the end customer, it provides vital insight into the design language what future smartphones will look like.

The first Samsung smartphones with the Infinity-U and the Infinity-V display will launch in 2019. In the future, the notch can evolve into something like the ones on these patents. According to the source manufacturing smartphones with these types of notch designs are comparatively cheaper. Therefore, these notch designs are likely to be seen on midrange and budget smartphones. Samsung is not only gearing up to adopt the notch but they are also planning to bring them to the mass market.

  • Here Is How Water Cooling On Modern Smart Phones Works

Here Is How Water Cooling On Modern Smart Phones Works

Water cooling or liquid cooling has become a unique selling proposition for phones these days. And at times it turns out to be nothing more than a marketing gimmick. Liquid cooling has been around for a long time for personal computers which are gaming oriented. This kind of cooling was introduced because gaming PCs get heated up due to their high performance requirements. It is one thing to have water or liquid cooling on PCs which have a lot of space to work around, but on a phone space is a huge constraint.

    Why Use Liquid

Air cooling, which had been the choice of many, isn’t as efficient as Liquid cooling when it comes to computers and mobile phones. Air cooling requires a lot of fans. And fans take up space. A typical gaming PC with air cooling will have case fans, graphics card fans, and a CPU fan. Same goes for phones. The phones have several holes  to dissipate heat. These try to keep the insides of the CPU cool, but on the other hand, liquid cooling requires coolant-filled tubes, a radiator, water blocks  which are the equivalent of heat sinks and a few other small components. On normal phones without liquid cooling, the processor is generally under-clocked so that it generates less heat. The generated heat is dissipated through the body of the phone which makes the body of the phone hot while playing games etc.

    What Liquids Are Used

Water, deionised water, glycol/water solutions, and dielectric fluids such as fluorocarbons and PAO are the heat transfer fluids that are most commonly used. Most phones use water. The amount of water used is so less, it is essentially always in vapour form, which is why these systems are also called vapour cooled systems.

    Do Phones Need Liquid Cooling

Smartphones running just fine even two or three years back on normal air cooling/ heat dissipation coupled with under-clocked CPUs. But with smartphones becoming thinner and users demanding more and more performance from their smartphones, heating suddenly became a major issue. NEC Medias X 06E was the world’s first water- cooled phone. But around 2015/2016, Nokia introduced the Lumia 950XL and Samsung introduced the Galaxy S7; both water- cooled phones. Phone cooling has changed and improved a lot since then. Phones can perform much faster and the CPU can even be over-clocked if liquid cooling is used. The ASUS ROG phone, which has an overclocked cpu uses this form of cooling.

    How Does It Work

Phones use a copper thermal heat pipe to distribute the heat and move it away from the CPU. This kicks into play when the phone is performing high intensity tasks. These may include tasks like gaming or even media playback. The copper tube has a very minuscule amount of  liquid. The liquid is not even enough to see if the tube is cut open. The cooling happens through condensation. Condensation is the process of vapour turning to liquid when cooled.

As the processor heats up, the liquid heats up and turns into vapour, thus absorbing the heat from the CPU. This vapour then moves to the opposite end of the heat pipe. This end is further away from the CPU and is considerably cooler. The vapour dissipates the heat thus turning back into liquid form.  This process is continuous and works well to dissipate and disperse heat from a concentrated area to a much larger area thus cooling the entire system faster and more efficiently.
