JEDEC Announces LPDDR5 RAM For Mobile Computing Devices

JEDEC is a well known name in the microelectronics sector. JEDEC Solid State Technology Association announced the publication of the new JESD209 LPDDR5 RAM on February 21. LPDDR stands for Low Power Double Data Rate 5, implying that the RAM module is targeted towards mobile computing devices. LPDDR5 will run at 6400 MT/s I/O rate, which is almost 50% higher than the first iteration of the LPDDR4 mobile RAM. The increased transfer rate provided by LPDDR5 will notably give a boost to the efficiency and memory speed of the device. Devices that have low power consumption such as Notebooks, tablets and smartphones can especially benefit from the new module.

Furthermore, LPDDR5 has some new components that are specifically designed for mission-critical applications. The original LPDDR5 architecture has been redesigned and now runs on a whole new 16Banks programmable structure with an integrated multi-clocking architecture. Also, the LPDDR5 documentation is available for download here.

    New Commands

Two revamped command-based operations have been introduced to the new RAM module. They aim towards the improvement of system power consumption while reducing data transmission at the same time. Named Data-copy and Write-X, the operations will keep a check on the overall power consumption of smartphones and laptops.

The Data-copy command will provide instructions to the LPDDR5 module to copy the data on a single I/O pin to the other I/O pins. This will ensure that data is not needlessly transmitted to the rest of the pins. On the other hand, the Write-X command will instruct the device to write all-ones or all-zeroes to a specific address, which will eliminate the need to transfer data from the chipset to the device itself.

    Other Features

Along with the announcement of the new module, LPDDR5 has included Link Error Correcting Code support for the SoC-DRAM interface. It helps boost higher data transfer rates between the components. Other features include Dynamic Frequency and Voltage Scaling for Core and I/O, selectable differential and single-ended CK, WCK, and RDQS, partial array self-refresh and auto-refresh, and low power read/write operation with Data-Copy and Write-X functions.

Elon Musk Promises Tesla Will Release Full Autonomous Driving Feature This Year

Electronic car maker Tesla has been a driving force in the growth of the sales of electric cars. The company has introduced several futuristic features in their vehicles which have been really popular among buyers. Its CEO Elon Musk promised a while ago that a fully self-driving Tesla will be released by the year 2020. In a surprising move, the senior executive confirmed that the company will indeed be releasing the promised feature by the end of the year 2019.

    Tesla & Self Driving Technology

Tesla SmartphoneTesla cars are renowned for their Autopilot feature which makes use of several cameras and sensors present on the exterior of the vehicle. The feature, when used makes the car a partially autonomous vehicle. It still requires the driver to be attentive of their surroundings all the time, or the feature stops working. The feature is then disabled for the rest of the trip and won’t be accessible. It was touted as a revolutionary feature when it was introduced back in 2015 with the v7.0 update of the Tesla OS.

According to Elon Musk though, the hardware in current Tesla cars is capable of fully autonomous driving since October 2016. It is expected that when the fully autonomous driving feature arrives in the form of a software update, it will automatically support the cars manufactured after late 2016. He states that the feature will be so capable that the driver will be able to sleep while the car drives itself. The vehicle will be able to pick the driver up, drive and drop the rider off their destination. This feature will fully roll-out by 2020 until then manual monitoring is required.

Interestingly, Tesla always missed every deadline that Elon Musk has quoted earlier. So, the feature might take longer than expected to be fully ready. Reports suggest that the Tesla cars with full autonomous functionality are likely to be ready by sometime in 2020.

Huawei P30 Pro Confirmed To Have Quad Camera Setup, Specs & Launch Date

Huawei launched the Mate 20 Pro last year, and the triple rear camera of the smartphone was highly commended by its users. Huawei is stepping up their camera performance with their next flagship, the Huawei P30. Leaked camera samples from the smartphone have confirmed that the device will have a Quad Camera setup with extraordinary zooming capabilities.

    Huawei P30 Specifications

The P30 will help Huawei to establish a foothold in the premium smartphone segment this year. For the same reason, the handset is expected to offer top-of-the-line specifications in the market. Leaked renders suggest that the P30 will feature a glass-sandwich design. The smartphone will reportedly have a waterdrop-style notch and have a high screen-to-body ratio. Renders also show the presence of a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the device, which is an appreciable add-on from the Huawei P20. Like its predecessor, the device may have a similar gradient pattern on the back.
The Huawei P30 will supposedly run on the latest 7 nm HiSillicon Kirin 980 SoC, which features an octa-core processor and the Mali G76 GPU. Furthermore, a ‘pro’ version of the smartphone is also expected to be launched at the same event. The Huawei devices will reportedly have up to 8GB RAM and up to 256 GB of Internal storage.

The camera will undoubtedly be the highlight of the Huawei P30, because the Chinese company has already proved its capabilities with the Mate 20 Pro. The leaked images suggest that the Huawei P30 Pro will boast of a quad camera set up at the back, whereas the P30 will have a triple camera module. Although the specifications of the camera sensors are not available yet, both the devices are expected to feature a 40MP primary camera sensor. As reported previously, the second and the third camera will be the 3x optical zoom sensor and the ultra wide angle sensor respectively. The announcement video of the smartphone shows that the P30 will support 5x lossless zoom. As of now, the purpose of the fourth camera sensor in the P30 Pro is not clear, but it may be either a monochrome sensor or a depth sensor. Both the P30 and P30 pro will reportedly have a single 24MP front camera sensor.

Netflix Cancels Jessica Jones & The Punisher, Putting An End To Marvel Partnership

Netflix on February 19 has cancelled two more Marvel series on its platforms. The streaming giant has cancelled ‘Jessica Jones’ after three seasons, and ‘The Punisher’ after two seasons. This has officially put an end to its partnership with Marvel. Jessica Jones was scheduled to arrive for the third season, but the show won’t be renewed for a fourth season.

These TV shows are the fourth and fifth respectively, to be taken off from the platform after ‘Iron Fist’ was cancelled last October after two seasons. It was then followed by ‘Luke Cage’ which was cancelled the same month after airing two seasons. Then ‘Daredevil’ took the axe after three seasons.

    What’s Next For Marvel’s Shows?

While all the shows by Marvel have been cancelled, it doesn’t mean that they won’t be returning soon. In a statement, a senior executive at Marvel hints that these series may have a chance of survival. Disney, who owns Marvel, is all set to launch its own streaming service Disney+ in a few months. The shows may come back on the said platform or on Hulu, on which Disney will hold a majority stake in after its acquisition of Fox is complete. But there may be problems in doing that, as the reported contracts between Netflix and Marvel TV wouldn’t allow such a move for two years.

Reports were also afloat that Disney was looking to procure back all the properties of Marvel from streaming services. The company would then stream on its own service, where it will be available exclusively. The service will also feature original shows and movies, including original Marvel and Star Wars series. Marvel fan favourite character Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston, will get an original series on the Disney+ service. A prequel series to Star Wars movie is also planned for the platform. The upcoming Avengers movie, Endgame will be exclusive to Disney+. The service will reportedly launch in late 2019.
