A Cheaper Variant of The Xiaomi Mi 6 Could Be Launched On November 11th

Xiaomi may have plans of rebooting its 2017 flagship, the Mi 6. Spotted on the certification website, TENNA, a Mi 6 with 4GB RAM and 65GB onboard storage might be launched on the 11th of November. In April 2017, the Mi 6 with 6GB RAM/64GB storage and 6GB RAM/128GB storage were launched. A cheaper variant of the flagship could now make its way to the Chinese market in November.

The price is expected to be at 2299 Yuan (Rs 22700 approx.) which is about 200 Yuan cheaper than the standard variant. The Mi 6 with with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage is available at a price of 2899 Yuan (Rs 27100 approx.). As far as other specifications are concerned, there won’t be any changes. The Mi 6 has a 5.15 inch 1920 x 1080 px LCD display. Powering the device is a 3350 mAh battery and the phone runs Android 7.1 Nougat with MUI skin on top. Under the hood, the device has Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 and Adreno 540 GPU for graphics. The fingerprint sensor is housed in the home button just below the display. Xiaomi Mi 6 is also splash-resistant, with the SIM tray also sealed against splashes.

Xiaomi Mi 6 is splash resistant

The Xiaomi Mi 6 does have stereo speakers and is missing a 3.5mm headphone jack, much like the iPhone 7 and it seems to have become a norm these days.

The Mi 6 has a dual camera set up of two 12MP cameras at the back. One of the cameras has a wide-angle lens with 4-axis Optical Image stabilisation with an f/1.8 aperture while the other one is equipped with a telephoto lens with an f/2.6 aperture for 2X lossless zoom and bokeh effect photos. On its front, it has an 8MP camera which records 1080P videos.

Whether the cheaper variant of the Mi 6 will make its way to India is yet to be seen and its global availability will be announced when the phone is unveiled.

  • Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun Resigns Under Mysterious Circumstances

Samsung CEO Kwon Oh-hyun Resigns Under Mysterious Circumstances

Kwon Oh-hyun, CEO of Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display, vice chairman and head of Samsung’s components division has announced his resignation. He will step down from the role as well as his position on the board in March 2018.

Kwon Oh-hyun said in a letter to the employees:

It is something I had been thinking long and hard about for quite some time. It has not been an easy decision, but I feel I can no longer put it off. As we are confronted with unprecedented crisis inside out, I believe that time has now come for the company start anew, with a new spirit and young leadership to better respond to challenges arising from the rapidly changing IT industry.

There are no words to describe how proud I am that we built together one of the most valuable companies in the world. We have come a long way to create a company that truly changes how people live, work and communicate with each other. But now the company needs a new leader more than ever and it is time for me to move to the next chapter of my life.

Kwon joined Samsung in 1985, rising to lead its semiconductor business before his appointment as the CEO. He was appointed CEO of Samsung Electronics in 2012 and in 2016, he became the CEO of Samsung Display.

Samsung has had a very successful finanical year but, all may not be well in its leadership. The South Korean tech giant, Samsung expects its operating profit to nearly triple year on year, demonstrating a very strong recovery after the equivalent period in 2016 saw the infamous Galaxy Note7 recall. In his letter, Kwon cites “unprecedented crisis,” he might be referring to the arrest of Lee Jae-yong, the de facto leader of the entire Samsung group, on corruption charges. It looks like the scandal will slowly show the repercussions and Kwon Oh-hyun’s resignation seems like the fist indication. Samsung is yet to announce a replacement. It seems like one of the two “co-CEOs”,  BK Yoon and JK Shin would replace Kwon. Will this internal turmoil affect Samsung and its future plans? We don’t think so.

  • Razer Smartphone Specifications Leaked

    Razer Smartphone Specifications Leaked

Razer took to Twitter on October 11th to reveal that it will be announcing its first ever smartphone on the 1st of November. Now, it seems like the specifications of the first ever Android phone made by Razer might have been leaked. A listing on GFXBench appears to be of the upcoming Razer smartphone with high-end specifications.

As per the listing, the phone will have a 5.7 inch display with a Quad HD 2560 x 1440 px resolution. Under the hood, the smartphone will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 64GB onboard storage. The standout spec here is the RAM. While most of the flagship smartphones cap out with 4GB of RAM, with the exception of OnePlus 5 which has a 8GB RAM variant, the Razer smartphone will also have 8GB of RAM. Extra RAM makes sense as Razer will market this as a gaming device as Razer itself is gaming accessories company.

While a specs listing doesn’t clearly tell us what the cameras will be like on this phone, it appears that the Razer Phone will have a 12MP sensor on the back and an 8MP camera on the front. The camera at the back will record 3840 x 2160 px videos as well.

The listing shows that the phone will run Android 7.1 Nougat and apparently it will have a custom skin on top. In January 2017, Razer acquired Nextbit, the company that made the Robin phone. Razer may use the assets as well as the core management and employees for making its smartphone and features like the deep cloud storage integration.

More information about the phone will be leaked in the coming days, as is with every smartphone launch. The official announcement of the phone is set for 1st November.

  • Nokia 9 Renders Show Thin Bezels And No Headphone Jack

Nokia 9 Renders Show Thin Bezels And No Headphone Jack

Nokia has re-entered the smartphone market with a slew of Android powered phones in different price segments. Its latest entrant was the Nokia 8, the first Nokia branded Android flagship phone. The rumours of Nokia 9 have been doing the rounds for quite some time now and new renders show a 360-degree view of the smartphone.

The Nokia 8, although a flagship, has thick bezels around the display which a lot of 2017 flagships don’t. The Nokia 9 renders show a more modern look with thin bezels. The dual-camera setup retains its place and the fingerprint sensor is moved to the back. As far as rumoured specifications go, the Nokia 9 in all likeliness will feature a 5.5-inch 2880 x 1440 px AMOLED display. The phone will have Qualcomm’s MSM8998 Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM and either 64GB or 128GB storage. Features like OZO sound, ‘Bothie’ are expected to be featured in the Nokia 9 as well since HMD Global really used these features to market the Nokia 8. One big omission in the renders is that of the 3.5mm headphone jack. After Google ditched it in its new Pixel 2 smartphones, there are rumours that other big Android phone manufacturers will follow suit.

In the photography department, there’s a vertically stacked dual-lens camera. The specifications in the camera department aren’t clear yet.

With the Nokia 8 launching just a couple of months ago, it will make sense for HMD Global to give the phone some breathing space and launch a new flagship in 2018 with the new flagship chipset, presumably Snapdragon 845. Using the Snapdragon 845 for its devices early on in 2018 might be a little tricky after reports of a deal between Samsung and Qualcomm surfaced a few days which would give Samsung exclusive access to an early batch of the new chips. There is no word on the launch of the smartphone and the company hasn’t taken to social media to drop any hints either.

  • Amazon Kindle Oasis Waterproof Launched

    Amazon Kindle Oasis Waterproof Launched

Amazon has launched the first ever waterproof Kindle E-Book reader. The new Kindle is a new version of the Oasis, which was launched last year and it has IPX8 waterproof reading. The Kindle Oasis is up for pre-orders in India, and will start shipping from the week of November 13. The new Kindle Oasis is priced at Rs 21999 for the 8GB variant and Rs 28999 for the 32GB variant (Wi-Fi + free 3G).

The new updated model of the Oasis has a six-week battery life and a slightly larger 7 inch screen with a 300 ppi. Amazon claims that the new display is brighter than the one on last year’s Oasis. Unlike last year’s Kindle Oasis, which used a magnetic case you attached to the tablet to extend its battery life, the new Oasis relies entirely on its built-in battery. It has a similar physical design, with one thicker side that tapers down on the other side, for one-handed reading. There are physical page-turn buttons, and the touchscreen page-turn option. Amazon says it’s worked on both the hardware and software side of things to make page-turning feel faster.

The new e-reader also has Bluetooth and has the Audible app built-in. This means that you can stream audio books to wireless headphones or speakers. Amazon also unveiled a new cover for the new Kindle Oasis, which can be transformed into a stand. Water-safe fabric covers are priced at Rs 2999, and are available in Indigo, Charcoal and Sandstone colours, while premium leather covers are priced at Rs 3999, and available in Black and Merlot colours.

  • Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 With Bezel-Less Design Leaked

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 With Bezel-Less Design Leaked

Xiaomi has been known to launch multiple smartphones across the price range in a year and 2017 seems to be no different. After launching the Mi A1 with stock Android and the Mi Mix 2 with tri-bezel less display, it looks like the Redmi Note 5 is not too far away from an announcement. Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 seems to have been leaked and the images reveal a large display and very thin bezels. Large displays aren’t new to the Redmi Note lineup but, considering its entry-level price point, a bezel-less display looks like very interesting.

One thing that might change from the leaked image to the actual device could be the white bezels. As far as specifications are concerned, there isn’t much known about the Redmi Note 5. Xiaomi might go for the Helio P25 or P30 chipset this time around. Prior Redmi Note devices have had the Snapdragon chipset and previous reports hinted towards a Snapdragon 660 chipset. As is with all Redmi Note phones, it will be a powered by a massive battery, probably a 4000 mAh battery.

The images also reveal a dual-camera setup which will be a first for this lineup. After the Mi A1’s launch, it won’t be surprising if the Redmi Note 5 with dual cameras is launched in India. Although, the Indian variant will definitely have a Qualcomm chipset.

The company had launched the Redmi Note 4 last year in August and has completed its update cycle. Xiaomi might launch the new Redmi Note 5 early next year. As far as pricing goes, the phone might be launched in the same price segment as the previous Redmi Note devices but, due to the bezel-less design and dual cameras, the pricing could be similar to the Mi A1 or the Mi 5X.
