Amazon Removes Hoverboards From its Website Due to Rising Explosion Scare

Earlier in December, the UK government had been forced to confiscate over 15,000 hoverboards because they were considered “unsafe” and potential fire hazards.

“Many of the items detained and sent for testing have been found to have noncompliant plugs without fuses, which increases the risk of the device overheating, exploding or catching fire,” said UK’s National Trading Standards

When security tests were conducted on hoverboards as they were shipped from different manufacturers, about 88% of them were declared a safety threat for users. These self-balancing scooters have also been in the news for getting banned by the UK government based on the 1835 Highways Act.

In the wake of accidents related to hoverboard-explosions that have continued to persist despite these measurements by the government, Amazon has finally decided to look into the matter. Not only has it started questioning the safety standards of manufacturers, it has also removed many hoverboards from its website as was reported by Best Reviews.

    Hoverboards removed from Amazon

This little piece of tech has been at the receiving end of many jokes on social media. Users have been tweeting and condemning the “evil” hoverboard all over.

In the recent weeks, the United States has witnessed ten recorded incidents of hoverboard fires in nine states, leading to active investigation of the situation. Additionally, major airlines all over the world have banned hoverboards from flights as market gets flooded with more and more cheap rip-offs.

The future of hoverboards seems very uncertain at this point. It would be interesting to see how these self-balancing scooters come back after such a major blow. Watch this space for updates.

  • Amazon Teases Drone Prototype in Video for Future Deliveries

Amazon Teases Drone Prototype in Video for Future Deliveries

A new video released by Amazon shows a drone delivering goods to their destination. The company boasts of the drone being able to detect obstacles in its way to steer clear off, while possessing the ability to fly for 15 miles. The video which was released yesterday, also used Top Gun’s Jeremy Clarkson to convey its message.

The drone lands on a strip with the company’s logo on it in the video. The strip has been put there by the family that has placed the order. This suggests that the landing strip may be necessary for the drone to get to its location.

While the tech seems fancy and futuristic, Amazon is yet to get its clearance from Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The plan to put a delivery-system in place that uses drones was first announced in December 2013 by Amazon. Let’s see what the future holds for it.

  • Amazon’s New FireTV to Challenge Apple TV

Amazon’s New FireTV to Challenge Apple TV

Amazon had launched its first FireTV last year, and is back with the launch of the second generation FireTV media receiver later, this year. The company intends to pit its new FireTV against the Apple TV that was unveiled at the event just two days ago.

    Buellerfinalcropped

The first FireTV was loaded with features and functions that were well received by critics. The device featured 2 GB of RAM, MIMO dual-band Wi-Fi, and a Bluetooth remote control with a microphone for voice search. It supported a 1080 resolution streaming with Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound all at a nominal price of $99. Amazon delivered on quality, the first time around and one expects that they will improve on it with the next one.

The news of the second-generation FireTV comes just a day after Amazon discontinued its first and only smartphone, the Fire Phone. But where the smartphone failed to make an impact, the Fire TV has seen success. It has already discontinued its first device so one can expect news of the new Fire TV to come out soon.

The new FireTV is rumored to come with a new microSD card slot, Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, an ethernet port and USB port. No details on a new UI or improved gaming features as of now. But given that the device will challenge the Apple TV, one expects Amazon to upgrade all its features for the new FireTV. Will the device be able to hold its own against the Apple TV? Follow this space to find out.

  • Amazon Kills off the Fire Phone

Amazon Kills off the Fire Phone

While the world was glued to the launch of Apple’s new smartphones, Amazon quietly killed off its own. The Fire Phone was released last year and has since then fared poorly in the market. The phone was the first and only smartphone launched by Amazon, and the company has no plans on bringing it back.

According to the Amazon website, the phone is currently unavailable and “we don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock”. An Amazon spokesperson told Fortune that  “we sold through our inventory of the Fire phone in the U.S. and globally, and we do not plan to replenish stock at this time,”

    maxresdefault

The plan to discontinue the device comes as no surprise as the phone failed to make a dent in the already crowded smartphone market. One of the main reasons for its failure was designing the phone in a way as to only suit Amazon’s own services, with limited apps and more focus on Amazon shopping.

However, the company will continue to provide support and service for existing Fire Phone users. It seems Amazon’s next move is to focus on the $50 tablet that they plan to launch later this year.

Amazon Accidentally Leaks Full Details of the Upcoming Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime

Chinese smartphone maker, Xiaomi, is known for purposely dropping hints before releasing their smartphones. This time is no different. We know that Xiaomi is holding an event in Beijing on 13th August, and many had been speculating that it could be the Mi 5. But, today, Amazon dropped in a hint, accidently or intentionally, about a new handset named the Redmi 2 Prime. So now, we know that Xiaomi may release, either both or one of the devices, during the event.

    redmi2prime

When Xiaomi released the Redmi 2 earlier this year at a launch event, the company also said that it would be soon launching a limited edition with better specs. According to the listing, Xiaomi Redmi 2 Prime has a 4.7-inch display with high definition resolution and Asahi Dragontrail glass. The handset measures 134 x 67.2 x 9.4 mm and weighs 133 grams with a 2,200 mAh Li-Po battery that claims to offer 14 hours of talk time.

It is based on Android 4.4.4 KitKat operating system. It is powered by 2 GB RAM and a 1.2 Ghz quad core processor (Snapdragon 410). Besides, the Redmi 2 Prime has an 8MP rear camera that comes along with an LED flashlight and a 2MP front camera.

The Redmi 2 Prime is said to come with 16 GB of internal memory and a 32 GB microSD card slot. Other than tha,t the phone has dual SIM (micro), 4G/3G connectivity, WiFi, micro USB port, Bluetooth and GPS.

Amazon removed the listing immediately, not before a screenshot was secured. There was no mention of the price or the availability of the device. Guess we will have to wait for an official announcement by Xiaomi.

What do you think the price range would the device fall in?

  • Amazon Prime is Expected to Launch in India

Amazon Prime is Expected to Launch in India

Amazon will launch its Prime service in India later this year, according to a report. Amazon Prime is a membership program that offers unlimited free shipping on  most deliveries with no minimum order size, unlimited backup for photos, access to streaming movies and music, free books from the Kindle Lending Library and more for an annual fee of $99. Think of it as Flipkart First, but with streaming and backup. Not only that, the company will also launch its Instant Video service, which is a major competitor to Netflix.

Amazon India users have been waiting for the Prime and Instant Video services since the website launched in 2013. While Amazon may reduce the price of its Prime service, it will be interesting to see how it launches the Instant Video for Indian users. Amazon’s Instant Video is known for providing stock as well as original programming abroad, so will the same happen in India, is a question we will be waiting to get the answer of. Moreover, it will be interesting to see if Amazon also launches its digital music service, which is also currently unavailable in India.

    amazon_instant_video_google_tv_2

Amazon’s Instant Video provides streaming for TV shows and movies as well as its own content, in a unique way: it will stream the first episode of a TV show and ask viewers to vote on whether the show should be made or not. For now, it seems Amazon will only provide streaming of current TV shows and movies before it forays into original Indian programming. As far as its digital music service is concerned, it may take a lesson or two from Flipkart, which used to have its own music service, Flyte, before it was shut down due to low profits.

With Netflix poised to come next year and e-commerce websites like Snapdeal and Flipkart upping their services, it is a good time to be a consumer.

  • 5 Tech Patents that Thankfully Never Worked Out

5 Tech Patents that Thankfully Never Worked Out

In the world of technology, there is no space for redundancy. Technology is getting updated time after time since tech fanatics are always carving out the next great gadget. The major number of brains swell up for innovating and creating such devices. Gadgets are continuously upgraded and tweaked, but some do not turn out as planned.

We will see some of the weirdest patents filed by the biggest tech powerhouses today:

    Nokia’s Vibrating Tattoos

    nokia vibrating tattoo

In 2011, Nokia signed a patent for the first vibrating tattoo. Yes, a vibrating tattoo that alerts users when their phone is ringing. According to the official patent, the apparatus would be able to detect a magnetic field and transfer a ‘percievable stimulus’ to alert its users about an incoming call, text ot dead battery.

But for some people, getting inked for the sake of technology was too much. People said the device plunges into a ‘creepy territory’. In an era of iPhones and Android devices, what would be the cost of unplugging a permanent tattoo?

Nokia never discussed anything about the tattoo including the potential health risks.

    Google Background Advertising

    Google background advertising

Google, in 2012, signed a patent that would enable the search giant to base advertisements on background noise. According to the patents, Google would install sensors on handsets that would detect temperature, humidity, sound, light or air distribution near a device and ads would be served accordingly.

For example, if you are at the gym and make a call, Google will be able to catch the gym machinery in the background and then serve up adverts for home gym equipment.  If it is 30 degrees or more outside, Google will throw in adverts for sun cream, air conditioning units or ice creams.

But it raised the question of privacy. People were not pleased with the idea of Google tracking down their location wherever they went. Although from the use and productivity aspect, this patent was quite useless.

    Amazon Airbag

    Amazon Airbag

Amazon came up with this idea in 2012 for a protective system for mobile phones. The patent describes a system that utilizes a gadget’s built-in gyroscope, camera, accelerometers and other onboard sensors to decide if the device has entered an airborne state. If it has, the technology will release airbags to decrease potential damage – or possibly even alter the trajectory of its fall by firing jets of air.

But this idea gathered much criticism like ‘What’s next, smartphones with built-in parachutes? Or maybe handsets with wings and propellers?’ and ‘From a logistical point of view, the handset would have to be rather big to hide an airbag.’

There has been no track of progress regarding this airbag. Let’s wait and find out!

    Microsoft Remote Control Charging Patent

    Microsoft remote control charging patent

Imagine a situation where you have to pay more for skipping an ad while watching a movie or watching a sporting event and you have to pay extra for accessing the replay. Luckily, this patent did not fly off as imagined by Microsoft when they filed this patent back in 2004. This wasn’t very welcomed by the masses because these charges would be on top of the base price as a way to boost up profits.

    Apple Air Jet Keyboard Patent

    Apple Air jet keyboard patent

It isn’t too hard to imagine a flat keyboard without keys- we don’t really look at our fingers when we type, ourselves. But, it’s still a little hard to imagine actually using one. In 2011, Apple patented a unique keyboard design that uses micro-perforations to shoot air at the user’s fingers upon touch, giving tactile feedback to whoever is. One of the biggest objections about virtual keyboards is the lack of tactile feedback, making it much laborious to touch-type at any speed, with much accuracy.
