  • After TRAI, Google Too Makes Life Difficult for Facebook

After TRAI, Google Too Makes Life Difficult for Facebook

Looks like it’s not the best of times for Facebook. There is another potential blow headed towards the company now, thanks to Google.

Google is allowing some Android users to download apps directly from search results without the need to visit the App Store. Though these downloads are available only through organic searches and not ads yet, but we can hope to see this extension soon as well.
    mark_zuckerberg

Now these downloads mean some not-so-good-news for Facebook which had begun advertising apps on its website a few years ago. Since then users have been able to download apps from these ads. However, since Google is allowing for direct downloads of its apps from search results, app developers are likely to pay less and less to Facebook to promote themselves.

This, in turn, means a cut in revenue for Facebook. Also, it should be noted that one of Facebook’s main arguments in support of its app ads is that it can direct app-developers to their target audience -with the help of the information Facebook has of its users. Not creepy at all, Facebook.google-play-iconThe new development in Google’s add-download might be quite a setback for the networking website since mobile app ads has been a significant source of its revenue.

Google, on the other hand, is making app-downloads more and more inviting for users by introducing features like “trial run ads” which lets users use an app for 60 seconds before deciding whether or not they want to download it. Additionally, the users can now also stream app content from search without actually downloading the app.

  • The Kernel Source for the OnePlus 2 is Now Available

The Kernel Source for the OnePlus 2 is Now Available

The Chinese manufacturer has officially made it possible for you to make custom ROMs for your OnePlus 2. Carl Pei, CEO, took to twitter to announce that kernel source for the OnePlus 2 is now open to the public, via GitHub.

This move means that developers will have full access to OxygenOS and can now make custom ROMs of the latest flagship smartphone in town.

The custom ROM that was based on Android 5.0 Lollipop was launched as a beta in April, this year. The company had already launched the OnePlus One with Cyanogen OS in April, last year. Later, Cyanogen partnered with Micromax, giving it full rights to sell Cyanogen-powered smartphones in India.

Because of this, OnePlus wasn’t allowed to sell Cyanogen OS based Android-powered smartphones in the country. However, they were allowed to finish selling their stock. Amidst the hue and cry, OnePlus then decided to launch its own Android- based OS. The company is well aware that their OS isn’t as popular as Cyanogen’s and hence opening its kernel source to users would make it imperative move to rope in customers.

The OnePlus’ custom ROM is now based on Android 5.1 Lollipop. It’s recent update was reportedly designed to patch the Stagefright vulnerability. Along with this, it also brought updates to the camera user interface that allows users to take slow motion videos at 120fps.

The update seems to have improved the battery life of the smartphone and also has several bug fixes. Download the kernel source from GitHub.

  • iOS 7 Beta 6 Release Seeding Early With Minor Fixes

iOS 7 Beta 6 Release Seeding Early With Minor Fixes

Rumours are that Apple will be holding a media event on September 10th – this is where they’ll possibly unveil the ‘iPhone 5S’ and the low-cost ‘iPhone 5C.’ Late last night, Apple inched closer to a final ‘golden master’ version of the upcoming iO7 7 and seeded iOS 7 beta 6 to developers.

The update comes a week after the previous update and just hours after a report pegged the Beta 6 update for next week. The focus of the small update appears to be on an emergency issue with iTunes in the Cloud which requires a workaround.

This update addresses an issue with iTunes in the Cloud, where some purchases may download or play unexpected items. If you have any devices running previous versions of iOS 7 beta, you must:
    1. Install iOS 7 beta 6
    2. Install the ResetMusicAndVideosLibraries configuration profile
    3. From Settings > Music, tap the Reset Media Library button
    4. Restart the device

It’s only a 13.5MB OTA download (build 11A4449d) and according to the change log in the iOS Developer Center shows it brings a quick fix.

iOS 7 is scheduled for release in the fall of this year, with updates to Apple’s iPhone and iPad lineups expected around the same time. If past history is any indication, iOS 7 should be made available to the public just a few days before the launch of the next-generation iPhone.

  • HTC One Google Edition ROM Now Available For Rooted Devices

HTC One Google Edition ROM Now Available For Rooted Devices

If you’re an HTC One owner and are not entirely enthused by the Sense 5.0 experience, especially since it runs atop older Jelly Bean software, you’re in luck.

A flashable version of the HTC One Google Edition is now available to download, and it appears to mimic the experience that U.S. buyers will have when their phones begin arriving on July 9th. The ROM was built from a system dump uploaded by Android Central’s Jerry Hildenbrand and has been altered slightly to be compatible with all HTC One models, but is otherwise unchanged.

The new HTC One Google Edition ROM will work with the GSM version of the HTC One, and it will give your handset the same experience you would get on the Google Play edition of the HTC One.

Notable improvements include lockscreen widgets and Photosphere, along with an improved stock camera app. You’ll have to already have an unlocked bootloader and/or S-OFF, and a custom recovery, along with the know-how to install it.

If you’re interested, head to XDA-Developers and get downloading.

Meanwhile, the team at Sammobile claim to have an early 4.3 build for the Samsung Galaxy S4. They claim that this is from a Google Play Edition variant of the S4, and the build is completely functional when tested on other Galaxy S4?s, but there’s no way to verify the validity of the claim. Since Google has not yet announced Android 4.3, and it doesn’t seem that there are any significant changes to the OS, this could well be a very clever fake with an edited build.prop to say 4.3.

  • iOS 7 Beta 2 Now Seeding To Developers

iOS 7 Beta 2 Now Seeding To Developers

Apple has released iOS 7 beta 2 to developers today, which officially contains “bug fixes and improvements” to the redesigned and initially-divisive mobile operating system.

Apple first unleashed iOS 7 to the developer community at its Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) on June 10, but the release was only accessible on the iPhone and iPod touch.

One major addition in the iOS 7 beta 2 is support for the iPad and iPad mini, though support only goes back to the iPad 2.

Existing iOS 7 beta users can go to Settings / General / Software Update and begin the over-the-air download of iOS 7 beta 2. Registered developers can head to Apple’s Developer Portal for more information on how to sign up.

iOS 7 includes an all-new user interface and features such as AirDrop peer-to-peer file transfer functionality, Control Center for quickly accessing settings, a new Photos app, integration with cars, and new Siri voices and options.

Apple is scheduled to release iOS 7 this fall for iPhone 4 and up, iPad 2 and later, the iPad mini, and the fifth-generation iPod touch. If history is any indication, its release will also coincide with the launch of a new iPhone.

  • Leaked : Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.2 Build

Leaked : Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.2.2 Build

While most of the world’s Samsung Galaxy S3 owners are anxiously holding their breaths in anticipation of an Android 4.2.2 update, eager beavers can download a test firmware ahead of the official release.

Interested parties can head over to SamMobile, the same Samsung-centric blog that leaked an earlier version of Android 4.2.2 for the Galaxy S3, and grab firmware I9300XXUFME7. The leaked build carries a build date of May 21.

    Galaxy S3

The best features of this new update are as following: a brand new S4 lockscreen that adds support for new widgets, Ripple and Light lockscreen unlock effects, custom clock sizes, create a personal message to be shown when the device is locked, Daydream, Driving Mode, new Screen modes borrowed from Galaxy S4, Adapt Display and Profesional Photo, actionable notifications, improved Notification Center, revamped Settings UI that resembles the one used on the S4. Also, you will get Gallery modes, full screen Samsung apps, new S-Voice, smart switch widget and multiple others.

SamMobile has said that the Korean company is on track to complete testing by the end of the month.

Bear in mind that the leak is only a test build, and while SamMobile does not report any major bugs, it is important to remember that it is not an officially-sanctioned piece of software. Only flash if you have experience doing so.

Will you install this firmware or wait for the official version?

  • Facebook Home Now Available For Almost All Android Devices

Facebook Home Now Available For Almost All Android Devices

Android Developer Paul O’Brien, has done it again. First, he unleashed Facebook Home apks before the initial release. Now, he has made Facebook Home available to all devices, even unrooted ones. That is correct. You do not have to be rooted to give Facebook Home a try.

The folks at Modaco extracted the Facebook Home APK file and made it available for all those in other countries than the US.

Paul O’Brian of Modaco found a way to patch the files necessary to run Facebook Home on unsupported devices and made it available for download. He patched a version of the Home app to keep it from figuring out what device you’ve just loaded it onto.

    As TechCrunch explains,

All you really need to do is pop into your Android device’s settings and make sure it’s set to install applications from unknown sources (it’s in the “Security” section). From there, you just have to download and install his patched versions of the Facebook Home app, as well as his patched Facebook and Facebook Messenger apps too. Already have those latter two apps installed? You’ll have to uninstall both of them and load up O’Brien’s cooked versions in order for Home to work properly.

That could pose an issue for some of the more curious among you — certain devices that have the Facebook app baked into it by the manufacturer (like the HTC One, for example) won’t play nice with this version of the Home app unless you root the device and remove the Facebook app yourself. Thankfully, rooting most popular devices is way easier than it used to be, but be sure to do your homework if you think you may take the plunge.

Facebook’s ‘exclusive’ product reserved for the HTC One, One X, One X+, Samsung Galaxy S3, S4 and Note 2 debuted in the Play store on 13th of April, 2013 and has garnered a lackluster two-and-a-half stars rating with near 2 thousand votes.

This news should come as a blow to HTC, which released the HTC First, a phone which supposedly was a part of the select group of devices destined to get Facebook Home.

For more details on how to download and install this APK file, head over to Modaco.

  • CyanogenMOD 10.1 M3 Builds Now Available For Download

CyanogenMOD 10.1 M3 Builds Now Available For Download

For a long time, CyanogenMOD has been the salvation for many users on aging Android hardware, cutting through the bloated, slow OEM experience to bring you a clean build of Android’s finest.

Despite needing to know your way around a command prompt, Android hacking has become somewhat mainstream over the last couple of years; processes have shortened and become more straightforward and users feel more comfortable ripping the bloated sheath from a brand new phone to find its AOSP guts underneath.

As MobileSyrup reports, Milestone builds are available to users who want the latest feature sets of CyanogenMOD, in this case version 10.1, without all the risky nightly business going on. Milestone 3, or M3 for short, builds are now available to most devices compatible with CyanogenMOD. These include the Nexus series as well as popular Samsung, HTC and LG devices, along with a few Acer and Asus tablets.

If you already have an older version of CM running on your device, go to Settings -> About phone -> CyanogenMod updates -> Check for Updates. For anybody just getting started with CM, hit the download site and look for your model.

Builds for different devices will be rolling out for a while, so keep checking the Cyanogen space if yours hasn’t been published yet.

Head to the CyanogenMod mirror to get yours.

Note : Flashing your device may lead to certain complications. Do so at your own risk.
