• HTC Confirms devices holding data, promises quick fix

HTC Confirms devices holding data, promises quick fix

HTC has confirmed after inspecting the security vulnerability that surfaced over the weekend, that allows any app requesting internet access to take a peek at a user account information, GPS location, system logs, and other potentially private data. They have issued a statement on the same which is below. Check it out.

    HTC Public Statement

HTC takes claims related to the security of our products very seriously. In our ongoing investigation into this recent claim, we have concluded that while this HTC software itself does no harm to customers’ data, there is a vulnerability that could potentially be exploited by a malicious third-party application. A third party malware app exploiting this or any other vulnerability would potentially be acting in violation of civil and criminal laws. So far, we have not learned of any customers being affected in this way and would like to prevent it by making sure all customers are aware of this potential vulnerability.

HTC is working very diligently to quickly release a security update that will resolve the issue on affected devices. Following a short testing period by our carrier partners, the patch will be sent over-the-air to customers, who will be notified to download and install it. We urge all users to install the update promptly. During this time, as always, we strongly urge customers to use caution when downloading, using, installing and updating applications from untrusted sources.

  • Apple Batteries Hacked

    Apple Batteries Hacked

Did you know that the batteries in your Macbook can be hacked? You didn’t? Well now you do. Laptop batteries have evolved from being just batteries to a system that incorporates a microprocessor with a firmware to control it. This firmware performs various functions such as charging and discharging the battery, providing information on battery condition and charge rates, and telling the computer how much juice is left.

Apple has, in the past, released hotfixes for malfunctioning batteries, and by analyzing these hotfixes, security researcher Charlie Miller has gained direct access to the embedded firmware. He has found some flaws in Apple’s firmware which allow malicious code to be embedded. So what can this malicious coded do? Well for starters it can brick your battery, which means that it will neither charge nor discharge itself. It could provide false information about the battery to the computer. This code can also execute software on your MacBook and no amount of anti-virus software and system formats can get rid of it, because its not on the system.

The good news is that no amount of malicious code can make your battery overheat and explode. The bad news is that patching these vulnerabilities means that Apple will no longer be able to provide hotfixes for its batteries.

  • 100 Disc Changing Xbox 360

    100 Disc Changing Xbox 360

How many times have you had to get off your beanbag to change the disc in your Xbox 360? Well those days are past. Ben Heck, self styled modder, tinkerer and designer, the creator of such wondrous mods as the PS3 laptop and the portable Ninetendo 64, has come out with another great mod. He’s taken an old 100 CD changer and combined it with an Xbox 360 creating a version of the console that can store 100 discs.

As we get more and more used to downloading and viewing content, changing discs seems so yesterday. As we all know, progress breeds laziness, and if that’s true, this mod marks true progress.

Unfortunately, not only is this mod not available for purchase, its also not yet completed. We can’t wait to see this thing in action.

  • Al-Qaida Communications Offline

Terrorist group Al-Qaida has been left without a distribution channel on the Internet, says terrorism expert Evan Kohlmann of Flashpoint Partners. In an e-mail he sent on Wednesday, he said
I really can’t say for certain how or why this happened, other than that it involved apparently separate attacks on both the domain name and data server used by al-Qaida’s trusted forum, Al-Shamukh. That kind of coordinated event doesn’t typically occur by happenstance.
Kohlmann, who has spent a decade tracking Al-Qaida, has said that other jihadi forums have been left online for the “rabble” to communicate. However, none of these forums are trusted by members of Al-Qaida. The incident, which started around 72 hours ago, began with the hijacking of the primary web domain used by the Shamukh chat forum, which disseminates propaganda on behalf of Al-Qaida. The next phase of the attack involved crippling the Shamukh website along with two other top level jihadi forums, including the Arabic-language Ansar al-Mujahideen Network.

He said that Al-Qaida most certainly had a backup of the Shamukh forum database, but there are no other channels left for the terrorist organisation to distribute new material. Either the forum must be brought back online, or they must establish a new relationship with another forum.

A list of potential suspects who brought down the Al-Qaida site includes government sponsored hackers from the US and the UK as well as independent cyber vigilantes.

  • SEGA – The Latest Victim of Hackers

SEGA – The Latest Victim of Hackers

SEGA Corp, makers of games like Sonic the Hedgehog and Comic Zone, was the victim of a large scale attack on its Sega Pass website. The database of its Europe based website has been hacked and the personal information of all its 1,290,755 registered users has been stolen.

On Friday, the company sent an e-mail to all the affected users, who are mostly based in Europe and North America, that their member’s e-mail ids, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained, however no payment details were compromised as the company used external payment providers. The company also warned users that if they used the passwords for other online services then they needed to change them immediately.

No hacker group has come forward to claim responsibility for the attack but LulzSec, the group behind the recent attacks on Sony, the FBI and CIA websites among others, had this to say:
@Sega – contact us. We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down.
These attacks leave us wondering about the motives of these hacker groups. Are they trying to improve online security or is this just an in-your-face I can do whatever i want type raid?

  • Three Members of Anonymous arrested in Spain

Three Members of Anonymous arrested in Spain

Anonymous, the name behind various recent cyber attacks including one in our own home, are finally under the scanner in a major way, Authorities in Spain say they have arrested three members of the organization that claims to be an Activist for morals. They also seized at least one computer used in the attacks on Sony. Those arrested are believed to have been important in coordinating the group’s activities in the country and to have distributed the Loic DDoS tool to others.

The group became infamous for hacking credit card companies, such as MasterCard and Visa, and PayPal in retribution for not allowing donations to be made to Julian Assange’s WikiLeaks. Sony has blamed the attack on its PlayStation Network partially on Anonymous, but the arrest of three of its members is a far cry from retribution for the company which has damages that total more than $172 million.

The arrests serve more as a message to other hacking groups, such as the headline stealing LulzSec, that given time law enforcement will track them down. However, this particular set of arrests will probably do little to discourage hacktivists across the world.

Spanish government are on high alert to make sure they are protected against any attacks from the various legions of Anonymous.

  • Google Stops Gmail Phishing Scheme from China

Google Stops Gmail Phishing Scheme from China

Google today said that it’s “detected and disrupted” a plan to gain access to hundreds of Gmail accounts through phishing attacks. The attacks originated in Jinan, China and targeted Government Officials from the US and several Asian countries. The attacks also included individuals from the press, military as well as political activists.

“The goal of this effort seems to have been to monitor the contents of these users’ e-mails, with the perpetrators apparently using stolen passwords to change peoples’ forwarding and delegation settings,” wrote Eric Grosse the engineering director for Google’s security team in a post announcing the crackdown. He also said that “It’s important to stress that our internal systems have not been affected–these account hijackings were not the result of a security problem with Gmail itself. But we believe that being open about these security issues helps users better protect their information online.”

Google has notified the people whose accounts are affected and has also secured the accounts. The company is prevailing on users to come up with more complex passwords and only going through the company’s secured “https://www.google.com” domain when logging on from a Web browser.
