Kirin 990 SoC To Debut Early Next Year With 5G Modem

The Kirin 980 was unveiled by Huawei earlier this year. It is the only Android Chipset made using the 7nm manufacturing process in the market right now. The chipset is seen on the flagship devices like the Mate 20 series and the Honor Magic 2. Now, new reports suggest that a successor to the processor is set to launch soon, named the Kirin 990. The Kirin 990 will most probably have the same 7nm manufacturing process as the 980. But will have 5G support as well.

    What’s New

While the manufacturing process remains the same, this does not mean that the 990 can’t be any better than the 980. Sources say that the Kirin 990 will consume upto 10% lesser battery and offer more than 10% improvements in performance. The chipset is reportedly under testing already and the company will make it official in Q1 of 2019. Kirin 980

In terms of 5G connectivity, the chipset might arrive with the Balong 5000 modem. 5G is the next big thing in the smartphone industry with almost all major manufacturers rushing towards it. Xiaomi and OnePlus have already announced their 5G compatible phones which will be out next year. Other manufacturers are also jumping on to the bandwagon with Qualcomm already having developed modems for the same. However, Apple only plans to launch 5G devices in 2020. As they are waiting for the proper infrastructure for the same to be developed soon.

Additionally, other industry sources claim that the testing of the Kirin 990 chipset is already under way. According to them, the cost of testing the chipset is also very high, with each test costing around 200 million Yuan. While the chipset maybe announced soon, it is highly unlikely that it will enter production at the time. The Kirin 980 was recently announced and has made its way to only a handful of phones. Huawei will make sure that the Kirin 980 is present in a good number of devices, before pushing out the Kirin 990.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro With Kirin 980, Triple Camera Images Leaked

Alleged images of the upcoming Huawei Mate 20 Pro have surfaced online. The images show the device will be available in 3 colours which are Twilight, Black and Blue.  The device will run on the flagship HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset.

    Design:

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro will supposedly feature a 6.3 inch screen. From the images it can be drawn that the device comes with a notch up top. Also, the rear of the device has a triple camera setup along with a dual-LED flash. The device has thin bezels on either sides and a slim chin along the bottom.

    Processor:

The Huawei Mate 20 Pro is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 980 chipset which is based on the 7nm manufacturing technology. The Kirin 980 chipset has an Octa-Core CPU which has 4x Cortex-A76 and 4x Cortex-A55 processors. The Kirin 980 has the Mali-G76 MP10 GPU, an AI processing unit along with DDR4 RAM clocked @ 2133 MHz.

DDR4 is the latest and greatest of RAM technology currently available. It helps to speed up the device as DDR 4 is clocked higher than DDR3 which has a clock speed of 1666 MHz.

Huawei is claiming their Kirin 980 to be faster than Apple’s A12 bionic chip. The chipset uses the 7 nm manufacturing technology. This is a technology that helps to pack in more transistors in the existing footprint of the chipset. It also helps to increase the speed and also reduces power consumption of the device resulting in better battery backup.

    Other specifications:

Huawei Mate 20 pro has aperture size ranging from f /1.8 to f /2.4 and focal length of 16 to 80 millimeters as claimed by reports.

It is also possible that the device will come with a battery larger than 4,000 mAh and an in-display fingerprint sensor. Another feature called underwater mode which Huawei showcased at IFA Berlin 2018 might also make its way to the device. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro might drop the monochrome sensor and replace it with a wide-angle RGB sensor to provide with 5X zoom capabilities, according to reports.

However, precise details about device will come out on 16th October at Huawei’s launch event in London.

Huawei Mate 20 & Mate 20 Pro With Kirin 980 Launching On 16 October

Huawei has confirmed that the Huawei Mate 20 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro Smartphones will be launching on 16th October. After revealing the date during the IFA 2018, Huawei said that the devices will be running the latest flagship processor, the HiSilicon Kirin 980.

    Huawei Mate 20 & Mate 20 Pro:

Huawei has not revealed any more information about the device. However, numerous ‘leaks’ and spy shots give us a fair idea about the smartphones. Earlier leaks and renders reveal that the devices sport a ‘water drop notch’. The notch is smaller than the notches we can see on other phones. The devices supposedly have a triple camera setup, which is quite unique to look at.

Most recently, a Spanish technology blog ‘spotted’ a Mate 20 device at the IFA 2018. The device is apparently in the hands of a Huawei employee and is protected by a thick back cover. The cover prevents one from getting a better view at the device. But the unique camera setup which matches the renders of the device makes a compelling case. The price of the devices will be known in October.

    Kirin 980:

The Huawei HiSilicon Kirin 980 is the company’s latest flagship processor. The processor will be used in all upcoming Huawei flagship devices, according to the company. The chipset is the first production SoC to have used the 7nm for its manufacturing. The 7nm manufacturing process makes a chipset more power efficient. It is designed around the ARM’s Cortex-A76 CPU and the Mali-G76 GPU, which are new designs. According to the company, the Kirin 980 has 6.9 billion transistors running on it. Comparatively, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 has 4.3 billion.

Huawei also says that the octa-core Kirin 980 utilises two cores for ‘turbo performance’ and two for long term performance. The other four are used to maximise power efficiency. Normally, a CPU uses a combination of only high performance and high efficiency cores. Therefore, making this a step away from conventional design.

For increased Ai performance, the Kirin 980 has a dual NPU ( Neural Processing Unit). This performs AI assisted image recognition tasks at a rate of 4500 images per minute, according to Huawei. Comparatively, Apple’s A11 bionic chip identifies 2371 images and the Snapdragon 845 recognises 1458, the company added.

Huawei believes that the Kirin 980 is far better than the Snapdragon 845, which has already been out for some months now. The Kirin 980 is set to launch in October, while Qualcomm is working on the successor to the Snapdragon 845. It will be exciting to see how many of Huawei’s claims come true after the launch of the Kirin 980.
