Hands On : Xiaomi Mi 5 Unboxing

Xiaomi Mi 5 launched in India early but left a lot of people disappointed with its high price tag of 24999 for the base variant. Which by chance is the only option available in India on the April 6th sale and that too only in the white color.

    xiaomi mi 5 igyaan 8

The Mi 5 is extremely light weight for the specs it is packing, weighing in at a little over 130 gms. (Xiaomi claims 129 gms)

Inside the box of the Mi5 You will get :

    • The Mi 5 Handset
    • USB Wall Brick
    • USB Type C Cable

The handset on the back tapers just like the Galaxy S7 giving it an excellent grip in the hand. The cameras are impressive with f/2.0 aperture on the rear as well as the front camera. The front camera has a 2-micron pixel size and a 1/3″ sensor which in itself is pretty massive for a smartphone.

    xiaomi mi 5 igyaan 7

Xiaomi may have pushed a whole lot of customers away by pricing the phone at a higher than expected Rs. 24999. However, for the price, it is extremely premium and loaded with high-end specs. What is a bigger let down is the availability of only one model and only one color of the handset in the market, where the customer is left struggling to make that decision.

The Snapdragon 820 chipset along with a 3000 mAh battery which supports Quick Charge 3.0 is a significant upside of the new Mi 5, however, so is the set of cameras and the overall premium look and feel.

We will be reviewing the handset shortly.

  • Xiaomi Launches the Mi 5 in India for Rs. 24999

Xiaomi Launches the Mi 5 in India for Rs. 24999

At an event held in New Delhi, Xiaomi has finally launched the Mi 5 in India for a price of Rs 24990 for the base variant.

The phone will feature the Snapdragon 820 processor with 3 GB or RAM and 32 GB storage. With a 16 MP main camera and a 4 MP, 2-micron pixel size, front camera, the Mi 5 will go on sale on the 6th of April.

The price of the phone is more than people expected, as the base variant was supposed to be around 22000, as the Chinese price of the smartphone is around Rs. 20000.

Xiaomi is not launching the 64 GB variant, or even the Mi 5 Pro in India today with 4 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Which is a huge disappointment for Xiaomi and Mi 5 fans. Another let down is the launch only in the white color, with the gold and silver colors not in sight.

Has Xiaomi rushed the launch of the Mi 5 to an extent where they are just trying to fulfil a promise to people, with a price and fewer options than ever before?  Either way, the phones are expected to run out of stock early, unless you can score an F-Code.

3D Touchhuawei mate s force-touch3D Touch is the new cool thing in town and everyone wants to have a piece of it. Reports emerging from China tell us that Xiaomi too is interested in having this technology for its future flagship devices. This could be one of the reasons the expected Mi 5 announcement has been delayed. January will see the first set of phones to arrive with the new processors including the Mi5 and (perhaps) Galaxy S7.

CameraXiaomi-mi4cWe have heard several rumours about the camera of the Mi5. The latest one suggests that the phone will sport a 16 MP rear camera with dual LED flash. The front camera will be marked at 8 MP.

ChipsetMi5 SnapdragonXiaomi’s Mi5 will be among the first devices to sport the newest chipset, Snapdragon 820. Earlier, single-core score of the Snapdragon 820 was placed at 2162, which was quite underwhelming give that the latest A9 chipset from Apple has a score close to 2500. However, a new score of 2300 points was revealed by a popular leakster. Though it is still not on par with Apple, it is still a better score and keeps hopes alive for better performing devices next year.

Battery, Storage and Other DetailsXiaomi-Mi5This power hungry device is set to pack a battery of 3,030 mAh with support for Quick Charge 3.0 technology. A fingerprint sensor can also be expected as many new devices are now coming out with it. Other features expected to be part of Mi5 include 4GB RAM and 16/64GB of Internal storage. Other rumored specs include 3 GB or 4 GB RAM, with a minimum of 32 GB internal storage. At the software end, the handset will run MIUI 7 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

Design and Display:Xiaomi-Redmi-Note-2Earlier today, Weibo posted some images of the Mi5 in its black variant which has since been removed. The images concur with past renders of the device. The 5.2-inch QHD (1440×2560) AMOLED display of the device is also expected sports a slimming frame and a wide display, and a thick lower bezel.

Price and LaunchXiaomi Mi 4cThe expected price of the Mi5 is around 1,999 Yuan (Rs. 20,500 approx.) Xiaomi is set to launch the Mi 5 on January 21st.

There are also speculations that Xiaomi might unveil the new Redmi Note 2 along with the new flagship. An online listing of Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 on an online portal Oppomart is the cause of these rumours. The online listing has revealed the complete specifications and pricing of the Redmi Note 2. Xiaomi has already started rolling out the invitations for its January 15th event in Beijing. So far the rumours adamantly insist that we will see the Mi5 or the Mi4s for the first time. However, an online listing of a new Xiaomi handset has added new speculations.

A listing on Oppomart, an online reseller of smartphones, has revealed the complete specifications and pricing of the Remi Note 2. This implies that either the Redmi Note 2 will be launched along with the Mi5 or the company will launch Redmi Note 2 instead of Mi5.

It is said that the Redmi Note 2 will look nothing like its predecessor. In fact, it might take its design inspiration from the current Mi flagship i.e. Xiaomi Mi4. The front will be protected by Gorilla Glass; the rear Gorilla Glass body might be curved, according to rumours.

This upcoming premium launch by Xiaomi is expected to sport a 5.7 inches QHD display. There are also speculations that Xiaomi might unveil the new Mi Pad 2. It is expected to feature a 7.9-inch display with 2048X1536 resolution. It will come with 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage. This does look like a quality update to the Mi Pad line and the resolution of the display might attract a good number of consumers.

If Xiaomi prices it as competitively as it usually does, then it sure would have a winner on its hands. With the specs being offered in this edition of Mi smartphone, Xiaomi is directly challenging the authority of the flagship devices. Having knocked off Samsung from the top spot in China, Xiaomi has seriously taken a bullish approach to the market. Let’s hope it lasts long and encourages other manufacturers to duplicate Xiaomi’s business model and give consumers more functionality at affordable costs.

It will be powered by a 64-bit Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor along with Adreno 430 GPU and 3 GB of RAM. The Mi5 is said to feature a massive 20.7MP front camera coupled with a fingerprint scanner and Sony Exmor sensor.

There are also rumours about the expected launch of Mi Pad 2 and Redmi Note 2 (temporarily titled). The Mi Pad 2 is expected to sport a 7.9-inch screen. Meanwhile the successor of Redmi Note is rumored to have a 5.5-inch display along with a 64-bit Snapdragon 615 octa-core processor, 2 GB of RAM and 8 MP camera.

Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 4G will go on sale on 30th December. The specs quoted for the next generation Mi device seems to put it directly on top of the food chain. Xiaomi has already become the third biggest smartphone company in the world. This flagship may be a direct assault on the big boys; Apple and Samsung. And if Xiaomi prices the device as competitively as it has done in the past, this might again be a big winner for the company. Seems like there’s no force yet which might stop Xiaomi’s roaring momentum.
