  • Gigabyte Launches PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs With 4.88 Gbps Read Speeds

Gigabyte Launches PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSDs With 4.88 Gbps Read Speeds

Taiwanese technology company Gigabyte has unveiled the first PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD that hits an incredible read speed of 5,000 MB/s, or 4.88 GBps. At the same time, the SSD can reach write speeds of 4,400 MB/s.

However, Corsair also launched its own Generation PCIe SSD on May 27, 2019. It can achieve a read speed of 4950 MB/s, which falls merely 50MB/s short of Gigabyte’s SSD. Both the SSDs offer almost 56% faster read speeds than the Samsung 970 nvme Solid State Drive, which is one of the fastest available SSDs in the market. The Gigabyte PCIe 4.0 utilizes the Phison PS5016-E16 controller and 3D Triple Level Cells (TLC) NAND flash memory chips manufactured by Japanese manufacturer Toshiba.

A full body copper heat spreader engulfs the AORUS NVMEe Gen4 SSD, so that the generated heat can be managed at higher read/write speeds. Since the temperature can increase drastically during operation, Gigabyte states that using the heatsink can reduce the temperature of the SSD by almost 14 percent.

Since Gigabyte has not unveiled the price of the NVMe Gen4 PCIe SSDs, an official announcement is awaited regarding the same.

  • Samsung Launches X5 Portable SSD Equipped With Thunderbolt 3

Samsung Launches X5 Portable SSD Equipped With Thunderbolt 3

Samsung has unveiled its latest portable SSD device, the X5. An SSD offers greater speeds over a conventional HDD as it doesn’t not contain any moving parts and directly writes information on to the chip. The new Samsung X5 portable SSD is equipped with NVMe technology and uses Thunderbolt 3 to deliver lightening fast speeds. The NVMe technology delivers higher speeds because it accelerates the transfer of data between a system and an SSD.

With a blazing fast read speed of  2800 MB/s and write speed of 2300 MB/s, it might as well set your system on fire. However that is not possible as the SSD also comes with a Thermal Management technology, ensuring that the device stays cool. So lets dive straight into it.

    Price:

It is not just the speed that might shake you up, have a look at the price. The 2 TB variant of the Samsung X5 portable SSD costs US$ 1400. If you’re looking for something with a little less storage capability and a smaller price tag, there are two more variants of the X5 portable SSD. The 1 TB model sells at $700 while the 500 Gb model is priced at $ 400. The device will go on sale from September 3rd.

    Build:

The Samsung X5 is protected by a solid built. Most importantly, the body has no moving parts and is manufactured using magnesium alloy. According to Samsung, this can help the X5 withstand a 6 ft drop as well. The device has a Dynamic Thermal Guard and a heat sink. Therefore, it helps the X5 keep the temperature below 45 degrees celsius at all times. The device is also good looking with Samsung saying that it has been inspired by the design of a supercar. The ridged surface at the bottom, therefore preventing it from slipping. The device is also password protected and Samsung offers a extended 3 year warranty on the same.

    The need for speed:

Terrifically high read/write speeds which can transfer a 20 GB 4K video in less than 12 seconds, makes the X5 portable SSD a powerhouse. With the Samsung X5 portable SSD, content creators and professionals can work through anything, without having to stop to think about it.

The Samsung X5 is a successor to the Samsung T5 portable SSD. The Samsung T5 provides transfer speeds up to 540 MB/s according to Samsung. For more details about the T5, check out our video below.

  • Fixstars Launches 13000M : World’s Biggest SSD

    Fixstars Launches 13000M : World’s Biggest SSD

While the personal computer industry is still trying to make the massive transition from mechanical Hard Drives to Solid State Drives, a new entrant has jumped into the fray to tilt the balance towards the newer technology’s favour.

For years now, SSDs have lurked in the shadows, and because of technological constraints have trailed HDD’s in terms of storage space, but all of this is about to change now. Meet Fixstars SSD-13000M.

    fixstars-1

This dull looking SSD from Fixstars comes with a massive 13TB of NAND-based flash memory, and is the biggest SSD so far. Put that in context with the fact that the biggest 2.5 Inch HDD available in the market is a 10 TB storage device by Seagate, you understand how impressive the tech behind this piece of computer hardware is.

But as with most good things, this SSD also comes at a cost, and I’m not talking about the interesting price tag of $13000( approx Rs 8,50,000)  that it comes at. According to Fixstars own benchmarks, SSD-13000M because of its size loses out a bit on the speed. The company here has decided to go for steady performance instead of speed.

This device is not focused at home users, and as such the steady performance at the exorbitant price does end up making sense. Considering that it’s no trivial task to combine, and validate so much NAND per drive, such pricing for the device can be considered acceptable.

The Fixstars 13000M uses a specialized disk controller designed by the company and 15nm Toshiba MLC NAND memory. Sequential speed is listed as 580MB/s, sequential write is 540MB/s. Power consumption is listed to be 3W at idle and up to 6.5W under load.

It can be years before NAND Technology becomes cheap enough for such applications to make its way into our homes, but for enterprise users with cash to burn, this offering from Fixstars does make a compelling argument in its favour.

  • Intel 710 and 720 Series SSD Specs Leaked

Intel 710 and 720 Series SSD Specs Leaked

The upcoming 710 Series, codename Lyndonville, and the 720 Series, codename Ramsdale, SSDs from Intel have had their specs leaked via a German Website. Both series are due for release in the next few months and set as replacements for the X-25E series of SSDs.

The 710 series will be available in 100, 200 and 300 GB capacities and will use MLC NAND storage. They will have a read speed of 270 mbps and write speeds of 210 Mbps. While these speeds are not exceptional, these drives are geared towards the enterprise. They come with AES-128 encryption and a mean time between failure of 2 million hours. The 710 series is launching in this quarter and we should have a pricing soon.

The 720 series is what we’re really exited about. It will come in flavours of 200 and 400 GB and will use the more reliable SLC NAND flash storage and will also come with AES-256 encryption. It will be the first Intel SSD line to switch from the SATA interface to a PCI Express interface. This will allow the drives to have a phenomenal read speed of 2200MBps and an unheard write speed of 1800 MBps. That is not a typo. The speeds are in Mega Bytes per second. These devices are expected to launch later this year at prices that would probably be through the roof.

Lenovo Introduces Slimmest, Most Powerful All-In-One Desktop for Business Pros Unveils ThinkCentre Edge 91z, First of New Edge-Branded AIO Lineup

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – May 17, 2011: Lenovo announced today the ThinkCentre Edge 91z all-in-one (AIO) desktop – the first PC in the ThinkCentre Edge family – that blends sophisticated image, purposeful function and productivity into a small, subcompact model. Equipped with up to Intel i7 Quad Core processors, the ThinkCentre Edge 91z AIO makes its debut as the industry’s most powerful AIO, as well as the thinnest, measuring just 2.5 inches. It makes an ideal office or home tool for small-to- medium businesses, education customers and power professionals looking for style and high performance with the convenience of a small footprint.

“Until recently, all-in-one desktops lacked the powerful performance many desktop users need, but the ThinkCentre Edge 91z all-in-one turns the paradigm on its head with supercharged processing power and robust graphics all in a sporty and stylish design,” said Tom Shell, vice president, ThinkCentre Marketing, Lenovo. “It forms a unique combination of style and substance, outpacing the competition in performance, fast boot up, serviceability and price.”

    Thinnest AIO Dressed to Impress

The ThinkCentre Edge 91z AIO sports a 21.5-inch glossy high definition screen, making images crystal clear. While the screen makes a large visual impact, its industry-leading thin frame helps it fit into even the tightest of work spaces. A convenient wireless keyboard with comfortable island-style keyboard tucks neatly under the AIO to complement its minimalist look. This compact design helps save up to 70 percent of space versus a traditional tower desktop and LCD monitor1.

    Features and Function With Purpose

By definition, AIO desktops should be easy to set up. The ThinkCentre Edge 91z makes it even easier – just plug in and go. The AIO keeps this simplicity and purposeful design constant throughout its construction: From a spill proof wireless keyboard, front-facing control buttons and wall mount capability to multiple-display support, the AIO makes operation intuitive.
    Most Powerful AIO Performer

When it comes to performance, the ThinkCentre Edge 91z comes fully loaded from “power on.” With Lenovo Enhanced Experience 2.0 for Windows 7, the AIO boots 30 percent faster than non-optimized models2, and with RapidDrive on optional solid state drive models, users can shave off up to 20 seconds of boot time2. Armed with up to Intel i7 Quad Core processors, 8 GB of DDR3 memory, 80 GB solid state drive storage or 1 TB hard drive and optional 1 GB of ATI discrete graphics, the AIO pushes the envelope as the industry’s most powerful AIO.

The ThinkCentre Edge 91z AIO provides a first-class multimedia experience too. With support for HDMI and an optional Blu-ray DVD drive, watching high definition videos looks seamless and crystal clear. Or, users can stream video on the AIO’s big screen using its WiFi capabilities. They can also video chat with the AIO’s built-in web camera.
