  • Vivo APEX Has A Hidden Front Camera

Vivo APEX Has A Hidden Front Camera

Vivo showcased a smartphone with an in-screen fingerprint scanner at CES 2018. At the ongoing MWC 2018, the company has announced a new concept smartphone with an impressive screen to body ratio. The Vivo APEX FullView is the first production smartphone to achieve this ratio. The smartphone has minimal bezels on all four sides. In fact, the uses a retractable mechanism for the front-facing camera.

However, the company hasn’t revealed the exact tech specifications, pricing, or the availability of the Vivo APEX.

    Features:

The Vivo APEX also offers an in-screen fingerprint scanner with a much bigger footprint. Unlike the Vivo X20 Plus UD, half of the screen portion of the Vivo APEX acts as a fingerprint scanner. The device comes with 1.8 mm bezels on three sides with 4.3 mm bezels on the bottom. In fact, it does not have a microphone, instead, it uses the SounCasting technology similar to the one found on the Mi MIX, which turns the entire display into a speaker.

The 8 MP front-facing camera uses elevating mechanism, which rises within 0.8 seconds whenever it is required. The phone uses OLED display, which might use the similar fingerprint scanner unit from Synaptic.

The device also offers a new system in package (SIP) technology to integrate the DAC with three amplifiers, which reduces the space of circuit board up to 60%. The reduction in the circuit size has enabled the company to fit in a larger battery.

Alex Feng, Senior Vice President of Vivo said:

APEX is an iteration of our constant pursuit of setting new industry standards and to deliver the ultimate mobile experience. From breakthroughs in audio, photography to In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, Vivo has remained committed to realizing our vision for future smartphones. What we showcase in this concept phone is only a fraction of our innovation pipeline. We will continue to explore all possibilities to bring the best possible experiences to our consumers.

  • 10GB RAM In A Smartphone Will Be A Reality In 2018

10GB RAM In A Smartphone Will Be A Reality In 2018

There is no denying that 2017 was the year of bezel-less smartphones. In 2018, machine learning and AI are expected to be the trend-setters in flagship smartphone at least. A trend that hasn’t caught on is that of beefy RAM and storage options which would be an overkill for a smartphone. When the OnePlus 3T was launched with 6GB of RAM in 2016, many expected smartphone makers to take this figure and ride with it. That, however, did not happen.

    RAM

Even the Razer Phone, a smartphone designed for gamers had 8GB of RAM. The OnePlus 5T also has an 8GB RAM variant which is priced at Rs. 37999 in India. However, it appears that a smartphone maker is ready to take the RAM/storage configuration up a notch. Vivo, the first company to embed a fingerprint sensor inside a smartphone’s display could soon launch an Android smartphone with 10GB of RAM.

    Vivo Xplay 7

The Vivo Xplay 7 is expected to be the next high-end offering from the Chinese smartphone maker. While previous reports claimed it will have a completely bezel-less design, the new images reveal a different story. According to the latest leak, the Vivo Xplay 7 will have a 4K display panel. It will also sport an impressive 92.9% screen-to-body ratio.

    RAM

Under the hood, the Xplay 7 will have the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset. It will also have a whopping 10GB RAM which seems like an overkill for any smartphone right now. For storage, Vivo will offer two variants, one with 256GB onboard storage while the other one will have 512GB of storage. There were reports that even Samsung will launch a special edition Galaxy S9+ variant with 512GB of onboard storage.

Making sure that it is up-to-date with all industry trends, the Xplay 7 will also feature facial recognition. Reportedly, it will have the Face Unlock 2.0 which is the next generation of Vivo’s facial recognition technology. The smartphone will also come equipped with a dual-camera setup on the back which will be capable of 4X lossless zoom.

    RAM

Thanks to its nearly bezel-less design, the fingerprint sensor will be embedded inside the display. This essentially means that the Vivo Xplay 7 will have a 4K AMOLED display panel. Vivo will use the Clear ID technology which was first introduced in the Vivo X20 Plus UD.

The Vivo Xplay 7 will be announced in spring similar to its predecessor.

  • Vivo X20 Plus UD With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Launched

Vivo X20 Plus UD With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Launched

The launch of the Vivo X20 Plus UD was highly anticipated. Vivo, one of the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world became the first company to unveil a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The Vivo X20 Plus UD is not a prototype or a concept, it is a consumer-ready device with a fingerprint sensor placed inside the display.

Now, the company has made officially launched the device in China. UD, presumably, stands for “under display”. It will go on sale in China starting February 1st at a price of CNY 3598 (Rs. 36100 approx.).

    Vivo X20 Plus UD

    Specifications

The Vivo X20 Plus UD is basically the Vivo X20 Plus, with an in-display fingerprint sensor instead. It has a 6.43 inch Super AMOLED display with a 2160 x 1080 px resolution which translates to an 18:9 aspect ratio.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset powers the device. The Vivo X20 Plus UD has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage which is further expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card.

The smartphone is powered by a 3900 mAh battery. The Vivo X20 Plus UD runs Android 7 Nougat out of the box. Since Android 8 Oreo was launched in August of 2017, this news is a bit disappointing.

To the back, it has a dual-camera setup consisting of a 24MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS along with a 5MP sensor. To the front of the phone is a 12MP sensor with a soft LED flash and an f/2.0 aperture.

    What Is Clear ID?

Clear ID lets users OEMs embed a fingerprint sensor under the display. Synaptics claims that it has a failure rate of 1 in 50,000 which, for a first gen product, is admirable. Early reviews of the device are in and mostly paint a positive picture. People have praised the accuracy of the sensor after initial usage. While it is slower than the OnePlus 5T, it is hard to complain when the process feels so futuristic.

The fingerprint sensor sits between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it illuminates the finger and then processes the beams of light. Hence, this technology will not work on LCD panel, at least for now.

Vivo has already listed the device on its official website in China. However, there is no word on its global availability yet. Considering the precedence that this phone has set, Vivo would want to launch the smartphone in other markets as well, since there will be a lot of suitors for a new technology like Clear ID.

Vivo X20 Plus UD With In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Is Now Official, Launch Set For 24th January

It was a highly anticipated unveiling and one that would set the precedence for all the smartphone makers across the market. Vivo, one of the top five smartphone manufacturers in the world became the first company to unveil a phone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Not a prototype or a concept, a consumer-ready device with a fingerprint sensor placed inside the display.

Now, the company has made the device official in China as the Vivo X20 Plus UD. The smartphone will be officially launched on the 24th of January.

The Vivo X20 Plus UD is basically the Vivo X20 Plus, with a fingerprint sensor placed inside the display instead. It has a 6.43 inch Super AMOLED display with a 2160 x 1080 px resolution which translates to an 18:9 aspect ratio.

Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset, has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of onboard storage which is further expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. It is powered by a 3930 mAh battery which charges via a USB C port.

To the back, it has a dual-camera setup consisting of a 24MP sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and OIS along with a 5MP sensor. To the front of the phone is a 12MP sensor with soft LED flash and an f/2.0 aperture.

The technology found in the new smartphone is known as Clear ID and lets users OEMs embed a fingerprint sensor under the display. Synaptics has claimed that it has a failure rate of 1 in 50,000 which, for a first gen product, is admirable. Early reviews of the device are in and mostly paint a positive picture. The in-display fingerprint sensor sits between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it illuminates the finger and then processes the beams of light. Hence, this technology will not work on LCD panels as the sensor looks through the dots of an OLED panel, and then recognises the fingerprint.

  • Vivo Unveils First Ever Smartphone With An In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Vivo Unveils First Ever Smartphone With An In-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Vivo, one of the most famous Chinese smartphone maker in its native country, has done something incredible. Teaming up with Synaptics, it has unveiled the first-ever smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor that might be the answer to reducing bezels, shaky facial recognition technology and the inconvenience of rear-facing fingerprint sensors.

The technology is known as Clear ID and lets users OEMs embed a fingerprint sensor under the display. Synaptics has claimed that it has a failure rate of 1 in 50,000 which, for a first gen product, is admirable. Early reviews of the device are in and mostly paint a positive picture. People are praising the accuracy of the sensor while it is slower than other fingerprint sensors found on devices like the OnePlus 5T, it is hard to complain when the process feels so futuristic.

The in-display fingerprint sensor sits between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it illuminates the finger and then processes the beams of light. Hence, this technology will not work on LCD panels as the sensor looks through the dots of an OLED panel, and then recognises the fingerprint.

Alex Feng, Senior VP in Vivo, said in a press release that this technology is the solution to the industry’s challenge of providing a more convenient authentication experience. The smartphone is ready for mass production and should be announced in “early 2018.”

While the device might not be available in a lot of markets, it marks the beginning of more smartphone makers integrating this technology into their upcoming flagship devices. There are rumours already that Doogee V will also have a screen embedded fingerprint sensor and a design similar to the iPhone X.

With bezels becoming almost negligible, the implementation of this technology will be crucial for Vivo and other OEMs to keep producing smartphones with a front-facing fingerprint sensor.

  • Vivo Shows Off The In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Technology A Day Before Launching The Smartphone

Vivo Shows Off The In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Technology A Day Before Launching The Smartphone

Vivo teased the official unveiling of the first-ever smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor on the 10th of January at CES 2018. Now, a day before the smartphone’s launch, Vivo has showcased the technology that will be responsible for putting a fingerprint sensory inside the display.

The in-display fingerprint sensor will sit between the mainboard and the OLED panel where it will illuminate the finger and then process the beams of light. Alex Feng, Senior VP at Vivo, said in a press release that this technology is the solution to the industry’s challenge of providing a more convenient authentication experience. The smartphone is ready for mass production and should be announced in “early 2018”.

Early reports of the Vivo smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor have been positive. Analyst Patrick Moorhead detailed his experience with a pre-production Vivo phone equipped with the in-display fingerprint sensor technology. Synaptics, the manufacturer of the fingerprint sensor had also claimed that this technology is three times more accurate and faster than Apple’s Face ID. This claim, however, will be thoroughly tested once the device is made available to consumers.

Apart from Vivo, Doogee, another Chinese smartphone maker is also working on a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. The name of the device will be Doogee V and according to the leaks, the smartphone’s design is heavily inspired by that of the iPhone X and Galaxy S9+ Leaks.

The launch of the Vivo smartphone will usher in a new technology trend which will allow OEMs to provide a front-facing fingerprint sensor all the while decreasing the bezels around the display as well. However, a lot will depend on the responsiveness and reliability of the device from Vivo as this will set precedence for upcoming devices from other OEMs and how the consumers will respond to this technology as well.

  • First Ever Smartphone With An In-Display Fingerprint Sensor To Be Unveiled On 10th January

First Ever Smartphone With An In-Display Fingerprint Sensor To Be Unveiled On 10th January

A few weeks ago, Synaptics released a statement in which it conceded that the company has started mass production of an in-display fingerprint sensor in association with “one of the top five smartphone makers” in the world. At the time, everyone speculated that the announcement fit the timeline of the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. However, to a lot of industry expert’s surprise, that OEM turned out to be Vivo.

CES 2018 kicked off on the 8th of January in Las Vegas and the tech show has been known to showcase some of the most innovative products of the tech world. It appears that the first-ever smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor will also be unveiled during CES 2018. Vivo has released a teaser hinting at the revealing of its device on the 10th of January at CES. This means that unlike last year, Vivo will showcase a finished product rather than a prototype.

Early reports of the Vivo smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor have been positive. Analyst Patrick Moorhead detailed his experience with a pre-production Vivo phone equipped with the in-display fingerprint sensor technology. Moorhead describes the sensor as “fast and simple,” and Synaptics has claimed that it is twice as fast as 3D facial recognition like Apple’s Face ID.

The debate of Face ID vs Fingerprint sensor might become as huge as iOS vs Android in the coming months especially if more smartphones with a similar fingerprint sensor technology are launched before Apple releases its next iteration of iPhones later in 2018. Apple has confirmed that Face ID is the future for iOS and possibly macOS devices and it won’t be going back to fingerprint sensors.

A couple of weeks ago, Synaptics also announced that it will be unveiling a smartphone with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Now, whether this is a different device with some other OEM or the same Vivo smartphone will be revealed on the 10th of January.
