Amazon had launched its first FireTV last year, and is back with the launch of the second generation FireTV media receiver later, this year. The company intends to pit its new FireTV against the Apple TV that was unveiled at the event just two days ago.
The first FireTV was loaded with features and functions that were well received by critics. The device featured 2 GB of RAM, MIMO dual-band Wi-Fi, and a Bluetooth remote control with a microphone for voice search. It supported a 1080 resolution streaming with Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound all at a nominal price of $99. Amazon delivered on quality, the first time around and one expects that they will improve on it with the next one.
The news of the second-generation FireTV comes just a day after Amazon discontinued its first and only smartphone, the Fire Phone. But where the smartphone failed to make an impact, the Fire TV has seen success. It has already discontinued its first device so one can expect news of the new Fire TV to come out soon.
The new FireTV is rumored to come with a new microSD card slot, Bluetooth 4.1 connectivity, an ethernet port and USB port. No details on a new UI or improved gaming features as of now. But given that the device will challenge the Apple TV, one expects Amazon to upgrade all its features for the new FireTV. Will the device be able to hold its own against the Apple TV?
