  • 7 Simple Ways to Protect Your Privacy While Using Windows 10

7 Simple Ways to Protect Your Privacy While Using Windows 10

Sixty seven million Windows users are rejoicing at the thought of being upgraded to Windows 10 and are enjoying the convenience that comes with Bing knowing your location, Cortana knowing your name and sometimes other personal information. All your contacts, photos and everything are constantly being processed by the new software. It sounds perfect. However, one minor detail is missing. What is Windows 10 doing to protect your privacy as it constantly saves passwords, credit card numbers and personal information?

Here are a few things you can do to protect you privacy, while using Windows 10 and enjoying its features at the same time:

    1.  Know your Apps:

    microsoft

Many applications on Windows 10 require your personal information. For example, Maps, which needs your location in order to function. While Maps tells you where its using your personal information, many apps on Microsoft don’t necessarily follow the same protocol. Therefore, it is important to tweak the privacy settings of any app you use so that your personal information going out is limited, if not completely inaccessible.

    2. Communications:

Microsoft tends to take in all the contact information of their users, just incase their primary means of communicating, fail. It does this so that it can send you information as well as promotions. In order to manage these communications better, click here (if you have a Microsoft account) and here, if you don’t.

    3. Ads:

    ads

We all know that advertisements generate revenue. So if Facebook and Google can track you to sell ads, so can Microsoft. Microsoft does it according to your interests and even gives you your own advertising ID to make it simple. However, you can choose not to be a part of interest-based ads by clicking here. Opting out of that though, doesn’t mean that data won’t be collected or the number of ads that pop up will reduce.

    4. Turn off the tracking:

Follow these steps to prevent Microsoft from collecting random data and information –

Start > Settings > Privacy > Feedback and Diagnostics > Click “never” to change the feedback frequency and Usage Data to “basic”

Also, while in the Privacy menu, you can regulate any information from your location, camera, microphone etc. It can be controlled from that menu.

    5. Guard Your Browser History:

    Web Browser

You can stop the sending of your browsing history by Edge by clicking on the top right corner of Edge, then settings > Advanced Settings > View Advanced Settings, under Privacy and Services, turn off “Have Cortana Assist Me in Microsoft Edge.” This is essential because Edge only sends your information to Microsoft so that Cortana can be further personalised. So all you got to do, is turn her off. And while you’re in the Privacy and Services menu, make sure you turn off “use page prediction to speed up browsing, improve reading, and make my overall experience better.”

“If you received your Microsoft account from a third party, like an Internet service provider, that third party may have rights over your account, including the ability to access or delete your Microsoft account.” — Microsoft

    6. Don’t Get Tricked Into Creating a Microsoft Account:

Try and keep all your information within your local computer only. Even if Microsoft urges you to create an account, don’t do it because once done, it pieces together all your metadata and connects it to you ID. This can be a tricky situation and one must be extremely careful while sharing this information. Its never a good idea to share accounts. In order to delete or manage your Microsoft account go to Settings > Accounts > Your Account.

    7. Cortana Can be Creepy:

    cortana

Yes, at first it is fascinating to have an attractive voice talking back to you and calling you by your name. But, Cortana doesn’t know just your name. She has access to more information than you think she does and the whole situation sounds a little intrusive. So if you want to snap Cortana out of being too clingy, click here. There, you will be able to clear the Interests section as well as the Speech Inking and Typing information.

  • LG’s New Flip Phone Comes With Android Lollipop and 4G Connectivity

LG’s New Flip Phone Comes With Android Lollipop and 4G Connectivity

We mentioned earlier that LG may come out with a smartphone that caters to that sect of customers that still appreciate the good old flip phones. Well, now it’s official. LG has launched a flip phone called the Wine Smart that will cater to a global audience.

“Our goal with LG Wine Smart was to create a smartphone that fans of flip phones could embrace. Consumers shouldn’t have to miss out on the smartphone revolution because they prefer a particular phone design over another. With LG Wine Smart, they won’t have to.”

This phone will not just release in its home market, South Korea, but also in select nations like France, Italy, Poland, Spain and Japan, followed by other regions. The pricing and availability of this phone is yet to be announced by the company and will be done at the time of launch.

LG Wine Smart has the same features as the LG Gentle as shown in the picture above
LG Wine Smart has the same features as the LG Gentle as shown in the picture above

The Wine Smart is a sort of upgrade to the previous LG Gentle and it is also better compared to the phone that the Korean company released last year, under the same name. The company stated:

“Thanks to the positive response to the original Wine Smart introduced in Korea last year, LG optimised the latest model with more advanced multimedia features to make the transition from feature phone to smartphone as seamless as possible.”

Specifications wise, the new LG Wine Smart has the same features and specs as that of the LG Gentle that had released last month. The LG Wine Smart smartphone features a single 3.2-inch LCD touchscreen with a resolution of 320×480 pixels. This means it doesn’t have the front half screen that most flip phones are spotted with. It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and the flip phone is powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core processor alongside 1GB of RAM. It also has 4GB of inbuilt storage along with an expandable storage via microSD card.

The phone sports a 3-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, while also including a 0.3-megapixel front camera. It has a removable battery of 1700mAh. Apart from 4G LTE, the LG Wine Smart includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, and 3G connectivity options. It measures 117.7×58.7×16.6mm and weighs 143 grams.

What one can look forward to is the fact that the Wine Smart will come in two colours; Wine (Burgundy) and Navy Blue. The second thing that might either strike you or put you off, in an era of touch screens is that the flip phone features a T9 keyboard that will bring back good memories or perhaps frustrating ones. Lastly, the phone sports a leather-like finish on the rear panel.

The specs for the LG Wine Smart are as follows:

    Display 3.2-inch
    Processor 1.1GHz
    Front Camera 0.3-MP
    Rear Camera 3MP
    Resolution 320×480 pixels
    RAM 1GB
    OS Android 5.1.1
    Storage 4GB
    Battery capacity 1700mAh
  • Government Listens to India, Ban on Porn Lifted

Government Listens to India, Ban on Porn Lifted

After the GOI (Government of India) received a lot of criticism for banning porn all over the country, they have now made the decision to lift the ban on all those websites except the ones containing child pornography.

Previously, the government had made the hasty decision of telling ISPs (Internet Service Providers) to ban all pornography available on the internet. Under this, 857 sites were blocked and even those that had jokes and memes bearing no pornographic content, like 9GaG and CollegeHumour, were shut down. However, in a new directive issued by the Telecomm Minister, Ravi Shankar Prasad, he stated:

“The intermediaries (ISPs) are hereby directed that they are free not to disable any of the 857 URLs… which do not have child pornographic content.”

In a previous statement, while commenting on the governments commitment towards freedom of communication, Prasad had said, “The government compliments the dissemination of idea on the social media. We have launched the mygov platform seeking views of people of India on developmental agenda and lakhs of people are participating on this platform.”

Naturally then, this platform would’ve been bombarded with resentment and disapproval by the Governments involvement in censoring the internet, especially in a day and age where people are already battling censorship guidelines in all other forms of media and communication.

It may come as a relief that all sites have now been left alone, barring those containing child pornography and with good reason.

While it is good to see the government taking the peoples view into consideration, it is ironic that they made such a controversial decision around two weeks before ‘Independence Day.’ Perhaps, we will soon be able to celebrate freedom of censorship or is it too soon? Let us know your views in the comments below.

  • Nokia Bids Farewell to Its Here Maps Unit For $3 Billion

Nokia Bids Farewell to Its Here Maps Unit For $3 Billion

We know that Nokia has been away from the limelight of smartphones and is no longer considered the competition it used to be. Now, another field that they will be stepping away from completely, is the area of maps. Nokia sold its Here unit to the parent company, Daimler that has German carmakers like Mercedes, BMW and Audi, under it.

“High-precision digital maps are a crucial component of the mobility of the future. With the joint acquisition of Here, we want to secure the independence of this central service for all vehicle manufacturers, suppliers and customers in other industries,” said Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of Daimler.

The price that it was sold at was $3 billion dollars and each partner i.e., each of the car companies will own an equal stake in Here maps. The deal is supposed to officially close in the first quarter of 2016.

  • You Can Now Reserve Your Very Own Turing Phone

You Can Now Reserve Your Very Own Turing Phone

We had earlier told you that the Turing Phone is set to be out by September and the company as well as users are waiting to get their hands on the phone, which the company claims is “unhackable and unbreakable.” Now, reservations are open, even though billing still remains closed.

Perplexing? The company has made the smart decision of announcing ‘reservations’ instead of pre-order because one can leave their details on the website, choose the colour of the phone they desire and even the storage space they require, however, this procedure will not yield a phone or a commitment from yourself to purchase a phone from the company. It’s mainly like a statement or perhaps a marketing strategy.

Turing Robotics, is banking on the fact that the phone will sell for its strong security feature. It has no headphone jack or USB dock for the same reason. It has an IPX8 certificate making it water resistant and has a unique and stylish appearance.

Expected to be priced at Rs. 55,000, it may seem like a steep price for a relatively new phone, in the market. However, the Turing is made of a mix of metals called ‘Liquidmorphium’ making it sturdy and resilient.

On the specifications front, the Turing Phone runs on the 2.5 GHz Snapdragon 801c processor with 3GB of RAM. The phone supports 4G LTE and is powered by a 3000 mAh non-removable battery. The rest include a 5.5 inch full HD display, a 13MP rear and an 8MP front camera and a fingerprint scanner on the left side of the phone. The phone runs on Android 5.1 Lollipop with Turing Aemaeth UI. The phone can be charged by a magnetically attached power connector, like Apple’s MagSafe.

It is available in three variants – 16GB, 64GB and 128GB. In India, the 64GB variant will be available for a price of around Rs. 55,000 and the 128 GB variant will be available at a price of around Rs. 68,000. The Turing Phone comes in three models – Pharaoh, Cardinal, and Beowulf, each one taking colour and texture cue from the source material.

  • 10 Amazing Facts About How Mario Was Born

10 Amazing Facts About How Mario Was Born

We all grew up playing it. We grew up, obsessing about ‘The’ ultimate game. But do we really know anything else about Mario other than the fact that he’s a brick breaking, flower shooting, turtle hunting, plumber?

    1. Nintendo president, Hiroshi Yamauchi was desperate to try and break into the arcade games division in North America but they turned out to be a complete disaster to the American consumers with the game, Radarscope.

    2. In 1979, Nintendo hired Shigeru Miyamoto who was then simply an in-house artist, to create a game that would salvage the situation. And indeed, it did. Donkey Kong was born.

    mario founder
    Artist, Shigeru Miyamoto

    3. Before Mario became Mario, Donkey Kong was loosely conceptualised on Popeye. However, since Nintendo lost the exclusive rights to the cartoon series, Miyamoto was left with his own imagination.

    4. Donkey Kong was about a carpenter who had to save his girlfriend from his pet gorilla. This little carpenter helped Nintendo hammer its way into the American arcade game scene. Donkey Kong sold over 65,000 units, totally.

    donkey kong

    5. That carpenter then, was called ‘Jumpman.’ However, everyone knew that Jumpman didn’t identify with the American audience and Nintendo had to come up with something approachable.

    mario evolution

    6. Many wouldn’t know that Mario is named after, Mario Segali. Who was he? He was the Nintendo warehouses landlord that barged into their office asking for his rent. Hence, Arakawa named him Mario and the rest was history, as they say.

    mario bros

    7. Mario debuted in his own game in 1981 with ‘Mario Bros.’ It was about him and his brother, Luigi, who were now plumbers, trying to complete various tasks in order to save the day.

    8. Mario Bros has sold 200 million units till today but this still wasn’t the winner for Nintendo till Super Mario came out in 1983 (that sold 500,000 famicoms within 2 weeks) Never thought a couple of plumbers could do that, did you?

    mario 1

    9. Design wise, it’s interesting to note that an artist instead of a programmer, created this iconic game. But this is exactly what Nintendo needed in order to break into other markets. He was fresh with his ideas and lent a story-like element to the game.

“I didn’t know how to make a really cool character..so I made Mario.” – Shigeru Miyamoto

    10. When Mario was first created, he had a bright red cap because it was tough to animate hair and make it move and he had a thick moustache so that the makers didn’t have to draw a mouth. He wore bright overalls so that he was easily visible too.

    mario 2

Miyamoto is a world famous name today, with other iconic games like legend of Zelda series, Star Fox, Wii Sports/ Play/ Fit. And Mario then went on to evolve into a three dimensional character with numerous versions of the basic game, like Mario Kart, Mario Space, Mario Golf, coming out. However, no one could replace the originality and simplicity of the first game and the characters it involved.

Today, either the sheer simplicity of Mario the plumber would get lost or we would finally get to witness Mario’s world through an Oculus Rift. While some might call it outdated, others would do anything to bring a part of their childhood memories back. Which one would you be?

  • India Will Need to Wait a While to Experience Cortana

India Will Need to Wait a While to Experience Cortana

We’ve all been talking about how iOS’ Siri finally has competition with Microsoft’s voice-activated digital assistant in Windows 10, Cortana. Set to have been seen with the global launch of Windows 10, Microsoft users in India may be left disappointed. Why? Because Cortana isn’t going to be available to us anytime soon due to Microsoft updating the software with “strong local content”, according to Microsoft India Director (Windows Business Group) Vineet Durani.

    source: Microsoft-news
    source: Microsoft-news

The decision has been made due to a number of reasons. Durani said that Cortana wasn’t just an assistant. Since she is used to find data, track information, set reminders etc, they wanted to make sure that Cortana was synchronised, geographically and locally so that she could cater to the Indian users with more efficiency. Therefore, it isn’t just about getting the Indian accent right, its about being completely in tune to the user’s needs.

This seems like an understandable move from the Redmond-based firm because Windows 10 is banking on making a comeback from the mild debacle Windows 8 was. They want to make sure they give stiff competition to Apple’s iOS, without any glitches. Hence, we can only hope that when Cortana does make an appearance in India, she’s flawless.

  • Here is Everything You Need to Know About the One Plus 2

Here is Everything You Need to Know About the One Plus 2

It’s out and how. Already creating a buzz by being the first to introduce their newest addition to the One Plus family on VR, Co-founder, Carl Pei insisted on letting everyone live their experience of launching the highly coveted One Plus 2. Now that it’s formally out, here is everything you need to know about the One Plus 2:

    1. Pricing

The VR launch that took place, had founders Carl Pei and Pete Lau teasing viewers with the speculation of the price. Even till the very end, they didn’t formally announce the numbers but instead took to Twitter to announce the cost. The 16GB variant costs Rs. 22,999 and the 64GB costs Rs. 24,999. With the minor difference in price, one wouldn’t consider buying the 16GB at all, don’t you think? While most phones that they have as competition, cost exorbitant amounts, the OnePlus 2 comes at a reasonable price for the specs its offers and the upgradation it has been through.

    2. It’s Available from 11th August

one plus 2 invite The One Plus 2 will hit the markets of US, China, Canada and India, on August 11th. A few months back the company had admitted that India is one of their priority markets. Reservations and invites for the purchase of the phone can be done on https://oneplus.net/invites. In addition to this, Pei has announced that there will be nine pop up stores all over the world that allow you to experience the One Plus 2 before purchasing it.The pop up stores will also have invites as well as goodie bags that you can take back. The experience zones will open in India, in Bangalore and Delhi. The address for the stores are as mentioned below:

      • New Delhi Cafe Coffee Day Square 44, Janpath
      • Bangalore Cafe Coffee Day Square, Vittal Mallya Road, Opposite UB City, Lavelle Road.

Read more about how to score a OnePlus 2 invite here.

    3. Processor

With the OnePlus 2, we have something bold to say. We believe that great products come from great ideas, not multi-million dollar marketing campaigns. We believe “that’s just the way things are” is almost always the wrong answer. Most of all, we believe that great things should be shared.

The makers of the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 claim that this is “the most advanced chip they have ever made.” Naturally then, this has to be fitted onto the most advanced phones of its time.  This is a huge improvement from the OnePlus One as it will be able to take both front and back camera pictures without a drop in superior quality, the 4G LTE connectivity will be smooth and the gaming experience will also be pleasurable. Pei stated that OnePlus has focused on and built their phone around the processor, instead of gimmicky features.

    4. Built and Display

one plus 2 display People who have had the opportunity to fiddle with the One Plus 2, before its launch, said that the built was good with a Magnesium Aluminium alloy frame running around the phone, that gave it a classy look. It has polished steel buttons, and you can customise your Home and Back buttons to your liking. When it comes to the display, with a 5.5″ display, and a really bright screen that allows you to use your phone in the brightest of sunlight, the display of the OnePlus 2 will surely not disappoint. One can reduce the brightness with the Dark Mode option too. For the complete spec sheet click here.

    4. Finger Print Sensor

one plus 2 This is touted as the most convenient feature and the company claims that the fingerprint sensor is actually faster than the iPhone. It can register 5 fingers and is an excellent security feature that is easy to use.

    5. Alert Slider

We usually find it embarrassing when our phone starts ringing in a meeting and we have to turn the Home screen on, in order to activate the Silent mode. However, the One Plus 2 has an Alert Slider at the side of the phone itself, which allows you to slide between the options of no notifications, some notifications and all notifications. So, you can toggle between the three, at your own convenience.

    6. USB Type-C Port

one plus 2 USB This is the first major company to have include feature in their phones. And in addition to this, the USB port will also have a patented reversible side that will allow you to plug it into any device you want.

    7. Style Swap Covers

OnePlus 2 --- The OnePlus One had received mixed responses in relation to the black sandstone finish cover that it had. However, this time around, OnePlus 2 gives you four other options in addition to the basic black that they were offering. Therefore, you can change the back cover in a matter of seconds and completely customise your phone from the outside as well as inside. Fancy, right?

    8. Software

The phone is supported by OxygenOS that isn’t purely Android and carries some minor changes. With additional features like Dark Mode, Customisable LED options, you can control your apps with the notifications you want and silence the ones you don’t want to be bothered by too. It also has a newly embedded Camera app that includes the slow motion option that allows you to take 120 frames per second and is also fit with an automatic Time Lapse Mode.

    9. Camera

camera Lastly, everyone wanted the camera to be better and OnePlus 2 has lived up to its expectations. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera that makes picture taking, easy and crystal clear. One very important addition to the camera is OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) that allows you to take pictures despite having a shaky hand as its focus point becomes strong. The camera is also fitted with a Laser Focus System that scans the screen for the perfect focal point and also takes less than 0.3 seconds to shift the focus point, without causing a blur. Thus, the company claims that the OnePlus 2 is ready to conquer anything from a scenery to night photography, with utmost ease. Carl Pei and Pete Lau are proud of their endeavour to ‘Never Settle,’  by attempting to create a future-proof phone.

Do you have faith in the OnePlus 2, as well? Let us know.

  • Samsung May Rid Itself of the 128GB Variant of Galaxy S6, S6 Edge

Samsung May Rid Itself of the 128GB Variant of Galaxy S6, S6 Edge

We had recently mentioned to you that Samsung is all set to take the markets with the new S6 Edge Plus. However, the coming of this new device might see the exit of the 128GB variant of the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge that have been taken off the shelves of Indian and Dutch markets.

Earlier, these devices were available in three variants: 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB in countries like Singapore, UK, Australia etc. But now, it is likely that the 128GB will exit these countries as well.

While the actual reasons for taking the 128GB off shelves are unclear, it could be due to the exorbitant price tag it had. That’s right. The 128GB Galaxy S6 model costed a whopping Rs.61,900 (970$) while the Edge variant costed Rs.70,900 (1110$). Keeping these rocketing prices in mind, bidding farewell to this variant, won’t be such a bad decision, after all.

  • About One Billion People Use Mobile Phones in India

About One Billion People Use Mobile Phones in India

This news hardly comes as a surprise. India has fast held second place in the list ranking the countries of the world by the number of mobile phones in use (China is on top). A report released by COAI, stated the all India GSM cellular subscriber figures for the month of June 2014 and the figures were very grand for the fast developing country that we live in today.

As per the report, that included Telecoms like Airtel, Idea, Vodafone etc. We were at 720 million till December. Once they added other GSM subscribers in June, the figure stood at a whooping 932 million.

The most recent report submitted by TRAI on 10th April states that India has 960 million mobile subscribers.

Therefore, seven months into 2015, and a quick calculation using the growth rate, it’s easy to conclude that atleast 1 billion people out of a population of  1.2 billion, possess mobile phones. That’s almost the whole of India.

As the population increases and as we go into various technological developments, mobile phone usage will also increase. We see everyone from three year old toddlers, grandparents and even people living in remote villages, with a phone today. It’s surprising that we hadn’t crossed the 1 billion mark, already.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge Plus Arrives in August, Not the Note 5

While everyone was looking forward to the Samsung Note 5 and the S6 Edge Plus to be launched together, rumour mills have now gone bust. A recent report shared says that the two devices will now be launched on different dates and venues.

For those waiting for the Note 5, looks like the wait is going to be extended as the Note 5 will be launched in the first week of September, at the IFA Berlin. The S6 though, will be launched mid-August almost 2 weeks earlier than the Note 5.

The reasons for delaying the launch can be a strategic move to create hype and increase profits and also to avoid the clash with the iPhone 6s Plus, which is speculated to release on the 14th of September. Therefore, since this is Samsung’s highly anticipated device, the company naturally wants to do everything right.

Meanwhile, the S6 Edge Plus will hit the markets soon. Watch this space for more information on the launch.

Google Photos to Replace Google+ Photos Starting 1st August

In a bid to connect with their audience and to up their usage, Google has finally decided that it will be shutting down Google+ photos and making way for Google Photos by August 1st.

This announcement sounds like good news for two reasons. Firstly, Google Photos will provide unlimited storage and will automatically sort out your photos in various categories and timelines. Secondly, anything that is free is always worth it. Google will provide unlimited storage, organise your folders and allow you to edit, share and save all your photos for free.

Google announced that they will begin the shutdown process with Android phones, then iOS and the Web thereafter. The Plus now has prompts asking people to switch to Google Photos and download it before the 1st of August. Doing this, will be of great convenience as Plus will soon stop working and one will have to access their photos from Google Takeout. The company ensures that all your photos and videos will still be saved and available after you switch to the new, stand-alone Google Photos app. So download soon, it can only benefit you.

Traffic Cops Might Soon Start Using Marijuana Breathalyzers

We all know that there is a fair amount of Marijuana consumed by the youth today. But most of us don’t feel threatened enough when someone ‘high’ drives because we feel he/she is in his/her senses. The law and others seem to disagree, though.

In a rather daunting yet intelligent move, it was reported that a Canadian company by the apt name of Cannabix Technologies has now begun to develop a prototype to test the THC levels in a person’s body, using a breathalyser-like device. While the device will be unable to measure the extent to which a person who has consumed pot, is impaired by the substance, it will definitely be able to detect it. Just like the breathalysers used for alcohol detection.

The breathalyser is yet to come out and will surely tighten the leash on traffic and driving rules. While this may be a brave step in the direction of safe driving and can reduce the risk of accidents, it will be a while before we see the traffic police using this unique breathalyser. Furthermore, it still remains to be seen if there is really a requirement of these kind of breathalysers in the first place as not enough research has been conducted to see the effect of Marijuana on keeping your eyes on the road.

All said and done though, you’ve been warned.
