    Google Rebrands Itself as ‘Alphabet’

The biggest Internet-based tech company in the world has major announcements for us today. The latest news on Google Inc. is that it has renamed itself as Alphabet. Alphabet is now the umbrella company that owns Google and the other companies that Google owned. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin will run Alphabet as CEO and President, respectively, while Sundar Pichai will be the new CEO of Google under Alphabet.

What is Alphabet? Alphabet is mostly a collection of companies. The largest of which, of course, is Google.

In an official blog post, former Google CEO Larry Page claimed that the major restructuring is to make “things cleaner and more accountable.” The official Google announcement on its blog, suggest that there will be a new placeholder site called abc.xyz. However, the entire list of companies that come under Alphabet is unclear.

“The whole point is that Alphabet companies should have independence and develop their own brands” – says Larry Page, CEO of Alphabet.

Alphabet’s aim, as mentioned in their official blog – is to have a strong CEO who runs each business, while the CEO and President of the umbrella company, handles capital allocation and work, to make sure that each business is doing well. This seems like a more consolidated administrative measure, more than anything else. It will help the founders to have a better hold over all the companies along with competent leadership. As of now there are no reports suggesting that this interior change would in any way affect the user’s day to day dealings.

Watch John Oliver’s Hilarious Take on the Porn Ban in India

So, we have covered the whole ‘Indian government bans porn’ story and we’ve also covered the ‘Indian govt removes ban on porn’ story; but guess who else has a take on it? John Oliver!

He begins the headlines with a British-India joke and goes on to comment about how ironic it is that India – the land that created the Kama Sutra (because that’s all we’ve ever done), can actually ban porn and then revoke it.

Even though, his comments might be predictable and made from a generic knowledge of the idea of Incredible India; the video overall is quite hilarious, even as he goes on to throw in a little suggestion at the end too.

  • Google is Reworking Its Android One Strategy In India

According to reports, Google is set to relaunch its Android cut-price smartphone project in India with a goal of delivering an efficient Android device at an approximate rate of $50 (Rs.3,187 approx.). Android One is a set of specifications that helps manufacturers make cheap and good quality smartphones. This project launched in New Delhi last September, but has struggled since.

    Google Maps

Mr Anandan, the managing director in India and Southeast Asia, has reportedly attributed this to supply chain issues that are imported from China, however, the plans for a reboot are said to be revealed in “the next few weeks”. The Android One phones, when launched last year, were priced at about $100 (Rs. 6376 approx.) but, it has been reported that the company would like to target the cost-conscious smartphone users in India and price the phones at $31 to $47, that is around Rs.2000 and Rs.3000.

Over the new few years Google aims “to bring to market high-quality, even more affordable devices… from 6,000 rupees to 5,000 rupees, 4,000 rupees to 3,000 rupees”, he added.

However, there are certain problems that Google faces in India, one of them being – the small size of the local market for digital advertising accompanied by India’s slow bandwidth that hampers their apps such as YouTube and maps; both of which require fast internet connections.

    YouTube

Their response to this, is to fend off local competitors by developing products that are suitable for Indian customers with slow data connections. And an example of this, would be their recently launched offline versions of YouTube and Maps.

It is yet to be seen whether this Google initiative will catch up with the Indian market, and 10 years from now, which big company will dominate India’s ever growing online population.

  • Xiaomi Expected to Launch its First Made-in-India Smartphone Today

Last year in July, when Xiaomi entered the Indian market, it took the country by surprise. More than its potential buyers, the Chinese smartphone manufacturer managed to shake up the ground for its competitors. Today, a year later, the company has come a long way. Xiaomi is going to launch its first ‘Made in India’ smartphone, in Visakhapatnam, today. The launch will be conducted by the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu; this event will also see Xiaomi make announcements for further expansion plans in India.

    Mi Visakhapatnam

The seed of this project is said to have been planted, when the CM visited China, earlier this year. The event today will see CEO Xiaomi India, Manu Jain delivering the welcome address and Hugo Barra, VP Global Xiaomi, briefing the audience on the ‘Journey of Xiaomi in India’. It has also been reported, that Secretary DIPP, Govt. of India, Amitabh Kant, will be the Guest of Honour.

With India estimated to become the second largest smartphone market by 2017, after China, it is said, that many companies will be looking to invest in India, in the near future. However, China is not the first country to show interest in India, and specifically Andhra Pradesh; Japan and Malaysia have all shown an interest in being partners in capital construction and have also come forward to contribute to the construction of people’s capital. It has also been reported that PM Narendra Modi suggested Naidu to send a delegation to cities like Astana and Asghabat, to study and incorporate some of the best practices they follow.

  • Here’s How Windows 10 Can Be Installed On Your Mac

Here’s How Windows 10 Can Be Installed On Your Mac

After getting tremendous positive reviews, Windows 10 makes itself available even to Mac users. However, if you want to use it after the 30 day trial period, then you will have to buy it. You will require two things in order to complete this process – a 5GB pen drive and a second computer that runs on Windows 10.

    Windows on Mac 1

Step 1: Download Windows 10 from the Windows run laptop and copy it on to your pen drive. You can copy it from the media creation tool on Windows; there are two versions, a 34 bit and a 64 bit version, pick the one that’s compatible with your computer.

Step 2: Go to the downloaded media creation tool and choose ‘Create installation media for another PC’ and click Next.

    virtualbox windows selection

Step 3: Then select Language, edition and the 64 bit architecture for Windows 10.

Step 4: Save the Windows 10 installer as an ISO file. It is suggested that you avoid using the USB flash drive option.

Step 5: Save the Windows ISO file on your pen drive and then insert it into the Mac.

    virtualbox optical disk

Step 6: With the pen drive still attached to your Mac, run the ‘Boot camp assistant’, which is located in the Applications folder.

Step 7: After the above procedure is complete, download the latest Windows support software from Apple and try installing windows 7 or a later version.

    screenshot

Step 8: If you have copied the Windows ISO on to the desktop then you can automatically locate it, otherwise you will have to click on Choose and look for it. After selecting the pen drive as the install disk, verify everything and Continue.

Step 9: You will then be asked to choose the size of the partition required for Windows usage; use the slider to select the size. You will need 20GB of space to install the software. Then click Install.

Step 10: The Mac should boot up from the flash drive automatically and start the Windows set up process. However, in case the Mac doesn’t automatically boot up, you can restart it and “hold down the Option Key after the Apple startup sound and then choose to boot from the flash drive.”

    boot camp partition

Step 11: After agreeing to the installation term and conditions, you may proceed further.

Step 12: After this, your will be shown all the existing partitions; pick the one marked ‘Bootcamp’ and click on Format.

    Step 13: Confirm Windows setup

    boot camp launch

Step 14: Windows Setup will complete the rest of the process for you, after which your mac should start back up with Windows 10. The process for creating a Windows user account will be the same as in all other Windows computers.

Step 15: You will be greeted with a Boot Camp installation message, click on Next and follow up on the rest, reboot your computer. And Voila.

This entire process will now allow you to have both the Mac OS and Windows 10 running on the same machine. However, you can only run one at a time. You can also manually select which operating system to run – hold down the Option key after the Apple startup sound and use the left and right keys to select which one you want to run.

    windows 10 mac start menu

One can also permanently remove Windows by booting into the Mac OS and running the Boot Camp Assistant again.

Clearly, this is a long process, and takes up time, energy, and your peace of mind. However, having both of the most efficient operating systems on your device and being able to choose which one you want, seems to be worth the trouble.

  • You Will No Longer Be Tricked Into Installing Chrome Extensions

You Will No Longer Be Tricked Into Installing Chrome Extensions

Google has decided to take control over ‘inline installations’ that promise exciting features and then latch themselves on to your Chrome Web browser using random plugins.

Starting September 3rd, 2015, Google will restrict the installation of such extensions. The inline installation allows developers and web publishers a convenient option to make readers install their extensions without leaving the website.

    chrome-extentions 1

The extensions can be found on the Chrome Web Store. However, publishers also found a way to embed a shortcut to it – so when a reader clicks on the install button, an installation dialogue automatically appears on the website, instead of the reader getting redirected to the Chrome Web Store first.

“It’s an important step to maintain a healthy extension ecosystem for users and the vast majority of extension developers who don’t use deceptive tactics.” says Google.

This feature soon began to annoy users, as the developers who maintain various advertisements claiming to offer free software updates etc. tricked users into installing their own extensions as well.

    Google Unwanted Extensions

Google will now monitor any unwanted or mysterious extension and redirect them to the product page of that extension in the Chrome Web Store. This is to allow the user to decide whether he/she wants to install that particular extension or not.

However, it is also reported that inline installations will continue, but just not the unwanted ones.

  • Xiaomi Set To Open Offline Stores In India By Early 2016

Xiaomi Set To Open Offline Stores In India By Early 2016

Xiaomi usually sells its devices online, directly to their consumers via online market places and hence save a lot on marketing expenses. However, the Chinese smartphone company has now decided to start selling via offline stores in India.

“We are experimenting with a new sales channel and getting into general trade to increase our reach and to make our products available more easily,” Jain said.

The company had previously entered a partnership with Flipkart and then eventually launched its own online portal – Mi.com. But now, with offline stores in India, it is eying a bigger share in the smartphone industry’s market shares.

    Xiaomi-Mi5

Xiaomi is said to be tying up with Redington (India) Ltd., a cellphone distributor in India, while also working on a commission-based model. However, further reports don’t suggest anything apart from this, and Xiaomi might also be working with multiple partners.

    Xiaomi-Mi5

The offline sales are to open in thousand to fifteen hundred stores in fifteen south Indian cities – Chennai, Bengaluru, Mysore, and Visakhapatnam being a few. The first phase of offline sales is said to go live in the next 45 to 60 days, and will eventually be available all over India by early 2016.

Manu Jain, India operations head at Xiaomi, has said, that although the cost of doing an offline business is higher, the margins should not be affected too much. He also added that they would not pass on the cost to the consumers and expect sales in India to contribute to over twenty five to thirty percent of the overall numbers.

With this project in tow, reports also suggest that Xiaomi is in talks with a Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn to make its smartphones in India as well as to introduce air purifiers and televisions here.
