  • Samsung Breaks Terabyte Threshold for Smartphone Storage

Samsung Breaks Terabyte Threshold for Smartphone Storage

The race has been heating up to increase storage on smartphones. Every smartphone manufacturer is trying to include more and more space due to the size of everything including music, photos, videos etc increasing. Turing Robotics Industries had introduced a phone with a whopping 12GB RAM and 1 TB space back in 2019. But the phone was big and hard to carry around. But latest Samsung news suggests that Samsung is finally breaking grounds and getting ready to introduce a 1TB storage on a smartphone. The company recently announced that it has begun mass producing the industry’s first one-terabyte (TB) embedded Universal Flash storage.

    Features

Samsung suggests that customers will soon be able to enjoy similar storage capacities as a laptop on their smartphone. The technology used by the company can fit double the storage in the same package size (11.5mm x 13.0mm) as the 512GB.

This is done by combining 16 stacked layers of Samsung’s advanced 512-gigabit (Gb) V-NAND flash memory which are vertically stacked NAND cells thus increasing density but not changing in size. Samsung also claims that the new eUFS features approximately twice the sequential read speed of a typical 2.5-inch SATA solid state drive (SSD). They claim the sequential read speed to be 1,000 megabytes per second. This means that 5GB-sized full HD videos can be offloaded to an NVMe SSD in as fast as five seconds, according to Samsung. The random read speed has reportedly increased by up to 38 percent over the 512GB version, clocking in at up to 58,000 IOPS.

This may be a much needed upgrade as cameras on smartphones have started to get better sensors with more megapixels. The images shot with higher megapixel phone cameras are much larger in size, and with most phones these days being offered without expansion options, the 1 TB storage may be the perfect solution. Whether Samsung uses it on their upcoming flagship Samsung S10, we will have to wait and see.

One of the features that accommodate adverse weather condition shooting is a space specifically designed for holding a heating device to prevent condensation. The lens also has a metallic frame structure, which more effectively transmits the heat of the device to the lens.

The price of the HD PENTAX-DA 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW Lens is £1,399.99 and the HD PENTAX-FA 35mm F2 will retail for £399.99.

Steam vs Epic Store Heats Up, Valve Says It’s ‘Unfair’ That Metro Exodus Is Exclusive To Epic Store

The war between the two gaming digital distribution platforms is heating up. Epic Games, who were behind the incredibly popular Fortnite, recently opened their online game distribution store thus ending up at loggerheads with Steam. Steam, owned by Valve Corporation, has been around since 2002 and is one of the most successful online game distributors around. A much anticipated game Metro Exodus, was opened up for a pre-sale post and many users were eagerly waiting for the game to be launched in February 15th.

But as it turns out, the post-apocalyptic shooter will only be exclusive to The Epic Store. The game will be exclusive to the platform till 2020. This has definitely put Valve and Steam in a difficult position.

Epic Games currently offers an 88% revenue share for developers. Compared to that, Steam offers a revised 70/30 split. Steam recently put out a statement that said that they think the decision to remove the game is unfair to Steam customers. They said that it is unfair especially after a long pre-sale period. They apologised to Steam customers who were expecting it to be available for sale through the February 15th release date. The company also stated that they were only recently informed of the decision and given limited time to let everyone know.

Steam has also informed that pre-orders will be honoured on the Epic Games Store. They further stated that the developer and publisher have assured them that all prior sales of the game on Steam will be fulfilled on Steam. Steam owners will also be able to access the game and any future updates or DLC through the platform as well.

  • Free-to-play PUBG Lite Is Coming To PC

Free-to-play PUBG Lite Is Coming To PC

PUBG is one of the mot played Battle Royale styled games in the world. The game drops 100 players into a map where they fight against each other using weapons they pick up around the map to emerge victorious as the last man standing. The game is available in multiple platforms including PC, gaming consoles and Mobile. But for PC users, being a high graphics game, the minimum system requirements can be an issue. The game currently requires :

    • 64-bit Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Windows 10
    • Intel Core i5-4430 / AMD FX-6300
    • 8 GB RAM
    • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 2GB / AMD Radeon R7 370 2GB
    • DirectX Version 11

However, these requirements will only run the game in the lowest settings which isn’t enjoyable. In countries like India, Thailand etc, many don’t match the system requirements thus not being able to play the game. Many also choose not to buy the game. PUBG may be able to change that in the near future. PUBG is testing a free-to-play version of the popular game.

    Minimum Requirement For PUBG Lite

This version can run on a lower graphics setting thus allowing gamers to be able to play on computers and laptops that are not equipped with high end graphics cards. Many laptops run on integrated graphics cards that may soon be able to run the game smoothly. The free-to-play game is supposed to have scaled down graphics. The game can be run on a minimum system requirement of i3 2.4 GHz, 4 GB RAM, Inten HD 4000 Graphics card and just 4 GB of hard drive space.

A player will be able to play Solo, Duo or Squad in TPP mode in PUBG Lite. PUBG Lite beta will contain the map Erangel for now. The game is already under BETA testing and will be out very soon. However, PUBG Lite is only available in Thailand for now. But we can certainly expect to see it in other Asian countries soon if the test goes well!

  • Gmail Adds Useful Shortcuts, Allows Message Downloading

Gmail Adds Useful Shortcuts, Allows Message Downloading

Gmail is one of the most widely used email services in the world. Being that as it may, it constantly keeps evolving and changing to make the user experience better and more convenient. An enterprise UI needs to be simple, efficient and easy to use. Gmail, in its bid to simplify life for people who regularly use the service, has introduced a host of new features and shortcuts.

One of the best features in the new update are the Undo and Redo shortcuts. These are specially great for people who like using their mouse to undo or redo words or sentences. The Undo button restores the previously typed text while the Redo button will reverse the changes. The buttons are added to the taskbar, preceding the font type and font size options. When you open the compose window it should appear right in the front of the taskbar. The positioning of the buttons are convenient and easily visible. These two commands are very frequently used by most people when composing an email.

Another great feature added to the taskbar is the option for Strikethrough. This allows a user to mark something as completed. It can also be helpful when suggesting edits in a text. The strikethrough button can also be found in the taskbar itself.

A great feature, that Gmail has recently introduced and was much anticipated by people is the ability to download messages in the EML format. This feature allows one to view the Gmail content along with attachments within different email clients. Users will have the ability to add these downloaded messages as attachments in other emails.

The features are slowly being rolled out for Gmail and GSuit users. It will automatically be added to your Gmail UI soon. The rolling out of these features has started from January 22 and should be available globally in a few more days. These changes however are for the web clients and there is no news of these coming to the App clients anytime soon yet.

  • SpaceX’s Test Rocket Topples Over In The Wind

SpaceX’s Test Rocket Topples Over In The Wind

SpaceX has been working on their BFR rocket for quite some time now. The company was getting ready to perform a test rocket launch soon from their facility in Boca Chica, Texas. Starship, formerly known as BFR, is Elon Musk’s dream to carry people and cargo into the orbit. It may even travel to the Moon, Mars and beyond at some point in the future. But, for now, it seems that the Texas wind is taking a toll on the rocket.

Photos suggest that the test rocket that was being prepared for a launch test has toppled over in the strong 50 miles per hour wind. According to Elon Musk, the mishap will take a few weeks to repair. According to Musk, the rocket was being prepared for a test launch in a few week’s time but the strong winds broke the Starship’s Mooring Blocks. These mooring blocks are responsible in keeping the rocket secured to the ground. This reportedly caused the Starship’s upper fairing to topple over.

The rocket is being made from stainless steel. Elon Musk says that 310S stainless is better for the high temperature outer skin, as it can bear  approximately 1450 Kelvin heat, so active cooling with cryogenic fuel only has to mitigate 300 degrees of delta temperature. The stainless steel fairing on the top seemed to have been damaged by the fall. Elon also reported that the bottom part of the rocket that houses the propellant tanks are fine.

SpaceX wishes to do hop tests with this rocket. The speciality of the rocket is its reusability which according to the company will make space travel economical and accessible. The hop tests involve igniting the vehicle’s engines and sending the rocket to low altitudes and getting them back to Earth upright. The final design of the rocket however, will differ from the test rocket that has toppled over. The Raptor engines of the rocket are said to be going through a radical redesign. The test vehicle is slightly shorter than the Starship’s final design. The Starship will also boast of seven engines while the test vehicle has only three.

Development and manufacturing of the Starship will reportedly be done from Hawthorne, California but the company is planning to shift some of it’s Starship prototype production to Boca Chica, Texas. The reason for that, given by Musk, is that the prototypes were too big to move across the country easily.

Google Maps To Display Speed Limits

Google Maps has been constantly evolving and growing the features that it has. Very recently, they added support for Autorickshaws in India. Now, news suggests that they will add speed limits in their iOS and Android Apps.

The new feature adds a badge at the bottom left of the screen while the map is open and shows the speed limit of that particular road. It also displays speed traps. Speed traps are cameras installed in various roads to catch over-speeding drivers. These traps are shows with a small camera icon at the various locations the traps are based out of.

    via-Android Police

Drivers will also reportedly get an audio notification when they’re approaching a speed trap. The speed limit update is supposedly rolling out in Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States. However the speed camera icons are rolling out to Australia, Brazil, Canada, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, UK and US users. According to a report, the speed limit feature was available in San Francisco Bay Area and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil for almost a year now. Since last year, in many areas, users can report a speed trap whenever they face or spot one. This is a welcome feature for people who have cars without smart displays. Those relying on their phones for navigation can use this feature to not over- speed in low speed zones.

These new features will not only make the roads much safer to drive in, but also save drivers a lot of money in terms of fine for over- speeding through camera traps.

DJI Uncovers Employee Fraud, May Cost The Company $ 150 Million

DJI, a drone manufacturing company recently uncovered an employee fraud that could very well have cost the organization $150 Million. The company released a statement that said that DJI holds their employees to strict ethical standards and takes any violation of their code of conduct very seriously.

    Statement By DJI

During a recent investigation, DJI found out that some employees inflated the cost of parts and materials for certain products. They, according to DJI, pocketed the profits themselves. The company estimates the damages to be around RMB 1 billion which is around $150 Million. DJI, to address this issue, dismissed a number of employees who violated company policies. Law enforcement officials were also contacted to report the fraud. The company in their statement also said that they continue to investigate the situation. They are cooperating fully with law enforcement’s own investigation.

The drone manufacturer, who made a mark in CES with their range of new products just a few weeks back, also said that such actions do not represent the company. The statement further said that the 14,000 employees working for the company work hard every day to serve customers and develop cutting-edge technologies. DJI has become one of the biggest players in the drone market. Forbes recently named the company’s CEO Frank Wang the first “drone billionaire”.

DJI is taking steps to strengthen internal controls after the incident.  They have established new channels for employees to submit confidential reports. The reports relating to any violations of the company’s workplace conduct policies will be completely anonymous.

  • What Spotify Entering Indian Market Might Mean For Prime Music And Apple Music

What Spotify Entering Indian Market Might Mean For Prime Music And Apple Music

Swedish online music streaming service Spotify might launch it’s services in India soon. There is already quite a competition brewing between other music streaming services, with Prime music and Apple music being paid services. Saavn, Gaana Google and other companies also have free streaming that many Indians use, apart from using Youtube for their music needs. Spotify is already a couple of years late in entering the market. Recent news suggests that they plan to establish themselves and launch before the end of this month.

The company has already partnered with T series. T series is India’s largest music label and movie studio. Fans of T series have been in loggerheads to gain the most number of subscribers on Youtube with popular Youtuber Pewdiepie. This partnership will allow Spotify to gain access to T-Series’ catalogue of Bollywood and regional songs. The company is believed to be launching with a catalogue of five languages with more than 160,000 tracks across various genres.

    What Others Offer

Apple Music currently provides three months of free trial before one has to subscribe in India. The subscription charges are Rs 60/month for students, Rs 120/month for individuals and Rs 190/month for families. Amazon’s Prime Music on the other hand is available for free for all Amazon Prime users which costs 129 per month or Rs 999 per year. Prime membership also adds certain other benefits such as Prime Videos, free delivery for orders from Amazon and so on. On the other hand, JioSaavn PRO is offered for Rs 99 per month. In a highly competitive market such as this, Spotify needs to up the game if it is to survive and thrive. Being a price sensitive market, the membership fees will be the deciding factor for subscribers.

Till last year Spotify claimed to have the presence in 78 markets across the world. The company also has over 250 partners across televisions, cars, laptops and speakers among others. One of India’s biggest music streaming service, Saavn was recently acquired by telecom behemoth Reliance Industries Limited. Spotify can play to their strengths and look at acquisition of Indian music streaming services as well. This will not only reduce establishment costs but also reduce competition. However, in a stock exchange filing, Spotify reported that it had a dedicated office space in India, with 308 employees. This means that the company is going to have a go at the music streaming business in India very soon. It will be interesting to see how it pans out and how Indians receive the new streaming service option.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung Galaxy S10 Might Have A Secondary Display

Samsung’s Galaxy series of phones are the most anticipated high end smartphones along with Huawei, iPhones and Oneplus phones. So it does not come as a surprise that everyone has focused their attention on the new Galaxy S10 series of phones.

According to a Dutch media source, Samsung had filed a new patent which includes the provision for a tiny second display. This isn’t the average display at the back of the phone, but a display overlay over the front camera. Most phones with punch hole cameras have to leave the lens part blackened out. The new patent wishes to put a screen on top of it. This is so that it can display relevant icons such as an animation of a heart when performing biometrics, a red outline if the camera is not ready, a green outline when it is and so on.  The transparent screen will hide various optical components which work with the help of light. These include proximity sensors, lighting sensors and the front camera. This will enable the phone to have a cleaner design and will be a much better experience for the users.

    Details

The second screen area will supposedly have a lower resolution than the main screen. The two display areas will work independently of each other. The display will also be able to show colours and the transparency of the small display will vary.

Samsung has spoken about correcting the image displayed on the second screen. This can be done using a technology they are calling ‘light path conversion device’. It is integrated as an additional display layer, in a grid pattern. The smartphone is also said to be able to detect if the area is being used for the camera or biometrics. We will have to wait and see if these new patents are in any way incorporated into new phones. Specially the the soon-to-be-launched galaxy S10 but it seems highly unlikely since many previous leaks suggest the phone to have a punch hole camera like any other phone.

The durability rating is similar as well with the same tests having been performed on this Chromebook.

The main difference are in it’s screen. It features three different display options — an HD IPS touchscreen, a matte HD IPS non-touchscreen and an HD SVA option. The hinge on this laptop only lets you lay the display flat on a table instead of a 360 degree fold.

This time, it was a huge round orb that was hanging on top of the map with patch v7.20 at the beginning of the week. Well, that orb burst open recently and it seems like new challenges have come up.  The orb which was flying over the Polar Peaks, burst recently and a snow storm engulfed the map for a brief period.

The challenges include 6 Ice Storm Challenges which unlock a Wrap reward. One can also destroy Ice Fiends to gain 500 XP and deal a certain amount of damage with Explosive Weapons to the Ice Legion for 500 XP.

  • Disappointing Geekbench Score For Samsung S10+

Disappointing Geekbench Score For Samsung S10+

The most highly anticipated phones from Samsung’s stable have always been their Galaxy S series. This year, they will have three or four variants of the phone. There will be an affordable Lite version as well. Just a few days back, it was revealed that the Galaxy S10 will have 6GB RAM and Android 9 OS out of the box. It was also seen on the Geekbench score that the phone would be powered by an Exynos 9820 SoC.

Now new scores have surfaced. It seems like two of the Samsung’s flagship phone variants will be powered by Snapdragon 855 as well. With Samsung phones, it is often observed that the Exynos processors score considerably lesser than the phones powered by Snapdragon’s latest SoCs. The S10+ proves that point yet again.

    Source – nashvillechatter
    Geekbench Scores

The two variants of the S10+ have one that features an Exynos 9820 and Snapdragon 855. The one with the Snapdragon scores 3413 on Single Core and 10256 on Multi Core. On the other hand, the S10+ with the Exynos processor scores 3248 on Single Core and a meagre 7999 on Multi Core. It is also noteworthy that this score is even lower than the non- plus version. That version scored a decent 4382 on Single Core and 9570 on Multi Core. This version also features the same Exynos processor.

    Rumours

Other rumours that have made headlines regarding the phone include a punch hole camera at the front, better battery among other things. A tenyearchallenge teaser by Samsung was recently shared by a popular tipster on a social networking website. This might give us indication of what else is to come from Samsung. The teaser showcases two camera styles. One having a vertical four camera layout and another with three cameras at the back. The teaser also shows a floating phone but we are not sure if the company just wants to show that it is waterproof, or the phone will actually float!

The launch of the Samsung S10, S10 Lite and S10+ are scheduled for February 20 and we will just have to wait and see how the phone performs and how it is priced to get a better idea of it’s value for money.
