  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Hands-On

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Hands-On

Samsung today launched the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom today in India at a price of around Rs. 34,500.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom offers a blend of smartphone and camera, and is targeted at the many people who now use their phones as their main camera too.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

Before you view our hands-on video you may want a quick recap of the key specs and features. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is powered by a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, has a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED display with resolution of 960 x 540, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal memory that’s expandable via microSD.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom also has a 2130 mAh battery, and runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean skinned with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI. The camera set-up includes a 16-megapixel rear camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), optical 10x Zoom, Xenon flash, HDR, panorama, and 24mm wide-angle lens. It offers full HD video capture, and there’s also a 1.9-megapixel front-facing camera.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Zoom’s big USP is its ability to take detailed shots of objects that are rather far away. Not only is the Zoom a first in terms of design, but it’s also one of the first smartphones to feature an optical zoom, as well as a digital zoom and optical image stabilisation with a 24mm lens.

It also has a myriad of shoot modes: 25 to be exact, which are as follows:

Smart mode suggest, Beauty face, Best photo, Continuous shot, Best face, Kids shot, Landscape, Dawn, Snow, Macro, Food, Party/Indoor, Action freeze, Rich tone (HDR), Panorama, Waterfall, Animated photo, Drama, Eraser, Sound & Shot, Silhouette, Sunset, Night, Fireworks, and Light trace.

    Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom

The Samsung galaxy S4 Zoom has a similar shape as that of its predecessor with a bump along the right side for your hand to grip, but the device is considerably slimmer. The whole thing is also made of glossy white plastic rather than the textured rubbery material on the side of the Galaxy Camera. At 208 gms, it’s one of the heaviest smartphones around. It has a plastic ring around the camera lens to access camera options and settings.

Expect a full review of the device pretty soon. Meanwhile, you can watch our hands-on video below :

  • Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Launched In India

Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom Launched In India

Samsung today announced the launched of the Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom, a device which combines the heritage of the latest Galaxy S4 smartphone with advanced photographic capabilities.

Spec-wise, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom seems to deliver for the most part. The hardware is quite similar to what you’d get from a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini. This means that the Zoom offers a 4.3 inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 540 x 960, a dual-core processor running at 1.5 GHz, 1.5 GB of RAM, 8 GB of internal storage expandable via microSD, a 2,320 mAh battery and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top.

    Galaxy S4 Zoom

But the most important aspect of this camera-centric smartphone is, of course, its camera. The S4 Zoom has a 16 MP sensor boasting 10x optical zoom, Optical Image Stabilization, ISO of 100 to 3200 and a xenon flash.

It also has a myriad of shoot modes: 25 to be exact, which are as follows:

Smart mode suggest, Beauty face, Best photo, Continuous shot, Best face, Kids shot, Landscape, Dawn, Snow, Macro, Food, Party/Indoor, Action freeze, Rich tone (HDR), Panorama, Waterfall, Animated photo, Drama, Eraser, Sound & Shot, Silhouette, Sunset, Night, Fireworks, and Light trace.

On the front of the device you’ll find a standard 1.9-megapixel camera. The Zoom will be able to achieve much better photographs than your standard smartphone, however you’ll have to sacrifice speed, beauty and slimness in return for a great shot.

The phone which came for pre-order on the 28th of June with a pre-booking offer will come in White colour option only for now.

  • Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Confirmed For September 4, Will Have 5.7″ Display

Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Confirmed For September 4, Will Have 5.7″ Display

Samsung is expected to introduce the Samsung  Galaxy Note 3 at IFA 2013 in Germany on September 6th or 7th. According to The Korea Herald, Samsung has decided to go with a 5.7-inch display as opposed to the previously-rumoured 5.9-inch screen size, likely for a more modest chassis change over the Galaxy Note II.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is also expected to run a Snapdragon 800 SoC and 3GB of RAM, along with a full 1080p screen resolution and 13MP camera, both of which debuted on the popular Galaxy S4 flagship earlier this year.

As for RAM supplier for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, Samsung, LG and SK Hynix have been mentioned. Samsung is already manufacturing 4GB LPDDR3 RAM based on a 20nm process, SK Hynix also demoed such RAM chips.

The Note series has differentiated itself from the rest of the Galaxy family with the inclusion of a pressure-sensitive S Pen, which, in addition to the larger screen size, can be used for taking notes and annotating documents. Despite initial industry reservations, the Galaxy Note has proven to be a hit with consumers: estimates put sales of the Galaxy Note II at above 5 million units.

Early September is also around the time Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 5S, so back to school expectations will be high this year.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 will not be Samsung’s largest smartphone, though. That title is held by the 6.3-inch Galaxy Mega, another category introduced earlier this year.

  • Samsung WB110 Bridge Camera Announced

    Samsung WB110 Bridge Camera Announced

The prosumer / bridge camera market has been eerily quiet since the advent of the interchangeable lens camera, but those still looking for a simple, all-in-one shooter have found a new one in the Samsung WB110.

The new bridge camera follows on from last years WB100 snapper and in doing so boosts the sensor from 16 to 20-megapixels and brings a wide-angled 22.3mm lens into play.

    Samsung WB110

The Samsung WB110 keeps the gigantic 26x optical zoom, which still sits behind some of the super-zooms on the market, but should be ample for most occasions.

The LCD measures in at 3-inches with an hVGA resolution and auto live-level adjustment so it can be viewed ideally in various lighting situations. Video outputs are AV and HDMI 1.4, and ISO (in addition to auto mode) ranges from 100 to 3200. The camera is shipped with the i-Launcher software, which only mentions PC support.

    Samsung WB110

Images are saved in JPEG format, with the highest resolution being 5152 x 3864, while the minimum resolution for images is 1024 x 768. Videos can be recorded in up to 720p in MPEG4, AVC/H.264 with AAC audio at 30fps. Other recording options include 640 x 480 and 320 x 240. It’ll be available in red and black too.

Smart Auto, in still image modes, analyzes key elements in photographers’ compositions, automatically adjusting photo and movie settings to help users capture the best shot possible. Live Panorama lets you photograph seemingly endlessly panoramic shots and preview them live on the screen by holding the shutter-button and sweeping across the scene.

Samsung hasn’t revealed when it expected the Samsung WB110 to go on sale and hasn’t announced an MRP either.

  • Samsung On Course For Record $8.33 Billion Profit In Q2

Samsung On Course For Record $8.33 Billion Profit In Q2

Samsung has released its estimated earnings for Q2 2013, with a full announcement scheduled for later this month. The company estimates profits of $8.33 billion (9.5 trillion won), up nearly $2 billion over Q1’s $6.4 billion profit.

This would give the Korean company a 47 percent year-on-year increase in profit from a revised KRW6.46 trillion in Q2 2012 – slowing from the 54 percent growth it posted in Q1 2013 – and a 20 percent year-on-year increase in revenue from KRW47.60 trillion during the same period.

Analysts had expected a figure of more than 10 trillion won, and Samsung shares lost more than two percent in morning trade.

“Demand for high-priced, high-end smartphones shows slowing growth, which could hurt Samsung’s profit margin,” IBK Investment and Securities analyst Lee Seung-Woo told the Yonhap news agency.

Samsung has lost nearly 30 billion dollars in market value since mid-March, before it launched the Galaxy S4 smartphone a month later. Several brokerages have downgraded Samsung and their earnings forecasts for the company on fears that the S4 is not selling as strongly as hoped.

As Reuters reports, shares in the $185 billion company have dropped 15 percent since early June, hit by a series of brokerages downgrades. The share price reflects concerns about handset margins, with its mobile business generating 70 percent of the tech giant’s total profit.

Its share price woes equate to a fall in market value of 33 trillion won ($29 billion), almost equal to the combined market capitalisation of Sony Corp and LG Electronics Inc .

Samsung was expected to post higher earnings in the current quarter, as analysts were expecting strong smartphone sales to revive its growth exponentially.

  • Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Review – iGyaan

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Review – iGyaan

Samsung in the recent times has bombarded the market with phones of all sizes, but mostly of the same shape. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a blown up Galaxy Grand and it appears to behave in a similar manner. Lets see if the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is really the value for money smartphone that Samsung claims it to be.

    Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 7

    Build Quality and Design

[pullquote_left]It’s the little details that are vital. Little things make big things happen.[/pullquote_left]

The Galaxy Mega will remind you of every other Samsung phone till date, maybe even many other Samsung phones to come. Built with the same plastic as seen on many-a-Samsung device, the Galaxy Grand fails to impress. First impression of the Galaxy Mega 5.8 will show you either a larger S4, a Galaxy Grand, or a slightly different Note 2, so for innovative new design points; Samsung gets a big zero.

The problem with the design is that despite being old, it still works. People still love the shape and the handleability of the phone, and the first look creates a instant connect with the brand, making this design an identifier, or even a statement for some.

    [youtube id=”7AeSLEntqUQ” width=”100%” height=”300px”]

    Hardware

Samsung has truly disappointed us with the hardware on the Galaxy Mega 5.8, not that it is really old, considering that the Galaxy Grand was launched in February 2013. Today a few months is as good as a year, even more if you compare it to 2 years ago. The Broadcom chipset still holds its ground and the benchmark performance is not all that bad, the CPU is Dual-core clocked at 1.4 GHz. The Galaxy Mega adds a bit of RAM to reach the 1.5 GB mark and retains the 8 GB capacity. The cameras are also a stark reminder with the 8 MP main and the 1.9 MP secondary. What is different is the large 5.8 inch capacitive touch screen, with its 540 x 960 px resolution gives a bare 190 ppi, which on parer sounds really low for today. The display however is great and we will explain that in the next segment.

The Battery on the Mega 5.8 is a 2600 mAh cell and for some reason it seems Samsung has managed to manage it quite well, there is a significant improvement in battery life.

     [youtube id=”On9v3b1rdFs” width=”100%” height=”300px”]

    Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 6

    Display and Multimedia

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 as the name suggests has a Mega display, a 5.8 inch smartphone is not really a divine though. In the early days the idea was to make phones smaller and more compact. Today as smartphones begin to replace basic forms of computing screens are getting bigger and bigger. The Galaxy Mega’s 5.8 inch display is still smaller than its 6.3 inch sibling, but is quite an interesting display. For one, it does not appear to be much larger than the Note 2 thanks to the design strategy employed by Samsung. The display is also bright and crisp despite its low ppi. This may be because of sheer size of the screen, you tend to hold it further than you would a traditional smartphone, say 3.5-4.5 inch.  The screen however uses what Samsung calls a “display enhancement engine” that reduces the noise and pixellation on the display as it does in their televisions, this seems to work well on the Mega 5.8.

The speakerphone on the Mega is fantastic, it is really loud, but not in a painfully distorted way, it sounds good through videos, music and even games. It does not however compete with HTC One’s Boomsound which has a more direct sound delivery approach. The sheer size of the screen makes consuming media enjoyable and almost stress free, and the chipset is more than capable of handling HD video playback and streaming.

     [youtube id=”YldZpBeQwnw” width=”100%” height=”300px”]

    Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 4

    Camera and Interface

The camera app on the Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 has been brought down from the Galaxy S4 which is initially inspired from the Galaxy Camera. With multiple shooting modes the camera app gives a lot of versatility to the user. Interesting shooting modes like “Best Photo”, “Best Face” and “Sound and Shot” worked really well on the S4, and they work just as great on the Galaxy Mega 5.8 .

Video is captured at Full HD and employs anti-shake if you need it from the main UI, the front camera however- captures 720p video. You can also add some effects to your pictures in the Auto Mode.

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 runs on Android 4.2.2 and slaps on a large lump of their popular Touchwiz UI. The interface brings many elements to make this device larger than life. For starters you have smart features, Smart Stay : Keeps your display on as long as you stare at the device.  You do have motion gestures ; Screenshots by a palm swipe and muting the device by simply moving your hand on top of the phone.

    [pullquote_left]E.T. fingers are a must[/pullquote_left]

The old elements of the TouchWiz UI are intact too, with features like Direct call (lift the phone from within a message to call), Smart Alert, tilting to zoom into pictures or gallery. Pan device to move the Icons or browse a zoomed in Image and even Flipping the device to Mute or pause.

The One handed use feature borrowed from the Galaxy Note 2, makes it slightly easier to dial on the Galaxy Mega 5.8, and also use the calculator. What we find funnily missing however is this feature in the main keyboard. You simply cannot use the keyboard with the same hand you are holding the phone with, unless you have gigantic E.T. fingers.

The Touchwiz UI adds more to the experience, a nice notification panel with scrollable toggles, a task manger and even “S-Voice” (Samsung’s long ignored voice assistant). Samsung often ignores required features in these phones, for example a phone of this size would do wonderfully well as a remote, but since the hardware is absent there is really no point.

    Phone, Networks and Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a dual sim smartphone (micro Sim), while the technology to have two sim cards running in the same device may exist, Samsung chooses to not employ it in their latest iteration of the big phone. Phone call handling is easy and simple, and once you get the hang of it you become a master of the device.

The network is solid and we faced almost zero to none dropped calls. We saw a frequent full signal bar, whether in software or in reality the network performance on the Galaxy Mega 5.8 is excellent. Voice is clear through and through, and while both ends of the phone call get clear and crisp audio streams. The speakerphone also keeps up with its name and is sufficiently loud for hands free voice calls.

Battery life is great on the Galaxy Mega and despite the fact that it has a mere 200 mAh increase from the Galaxy Grand’s 2400 mAh, and taking into consideration the increase in display size, the battery performance is far superior.

      • Talk time : 5.5+ hours
      • Internet : 6 hours
      • Music : 10 Hours +
      • Video :  4+ Hours
      • Average battery life : 1 Day +

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Unboxing 10

    Conclusion

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is no magical innovation and does not really create a wow statement, except probably “Wow its Big!”, which actually may be good enough for a lot of people. The blown up version of the Galaxy Grand actually improves on many things, including a larger yet better display, an improved battery life and a great camera. The price difference however seems a bit much for these.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a phone that might as well be the next big thing, but, the problem here may be that its just too big to be an everyday phone. All size judgements aside Samsung has really managed to increase their portfolio across different price segments, but here a Galaxy S3 for Rs. 27,000 seems a lot more promising and portable. The Galaxy Mega 5.8 also does not have multi-window a feature which now comes out of the box on the Galaxy S3.

Samsung Galaxy Core i8262 up for sale Rs 15,350, 4.3 inch Display, Dual Core and 1 GB RAM

Samsung India has put their upcoming Galaxy Core up for pre-order for a price of Rs. 15,350. But if you cant wait, you can head on over to any retailer and grab the phone for a price of Rs. 15,200 in both white and blue colors.

The phone features a lot of the usual features, but interestingly is only slightly cheaper than the Galaxy Grand Quattro which is priced at Rs.16300. The Samsung Galaxy Core features a dual core 1.2 GHz chipset with an unnamed GPU (we are inclined towards the Broadcom chipset), owners will get 8 GB storage, 1 GB RAM and a set of cameras, including a  5 MP main snapper and a VGA front facing shooter.

A 4.3 inch WVGA display completes the front and a 1800 mAh battery with a claimed talk time of 8 Hours powers the handset. The Samsung Galaxy Core will come with Android 4.1 along with TouchWiz out of the box, where Samsung has also included the tradition set of features and apps, including the Social Hub, Smart Stay and Motion etc.

Samsung has recently become very aggressive with the market launching several phones each month. With the mega success of their Galaxy Grand series Samsung also launched the Galaxy Mega 5.8 and Mega 6.3 to win over the “phablet market”. Samsung is said to announce over a hundred new handsets in 2013 with their major focus on mid range handsets.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Unboxing 14

    Galaxy Mega 5.8 Initial Impressions

The Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 is a large device, but clearly is not as large as its big brother the Mega 6.3, next to the Galaxy S4 the Mega 5.8 simply dwarfs the current flagship from the Korean Manufacturer. The display is a 540 x 960 px capacitive touchscreen, and despite a lowly 190 ppi the screen is really sharp and great to look at. The screen is also extremely bright, fairly visible outdoors and has good viewing angles.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Unboxing 8

The Galaxy Mega features a dual core 1.4 GHz chipset which is the same chipset seen on the Galaxy Grand, which was pretty good at handling gaming on the smaller variant, but may not deliver on a larger screen with a higher resolution. The phone also has 8 GB storage and 1.5GB of RAM, along with expandability upto 64 GB via microSD.

The phone is also capable of handling two sim cards at the same time with Samsung’s new dual sim smart active mode with active forwarding to your numbers.

Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 Unboxing 4

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 has dual cameras, an 8MP main shooter and a secondary 1.9 MP camera, both of which capture video at 1080p. The phone also comes with Android 4.2.2 out of the box slapped on with a generous dose of Touchwiz, with many of the UI elements inspired from the S4.

The Galaxy Mega 5.8 appears to be big but is easily handleable and is not that bigger than the Galaxy Note 2. The phone will fit into regular denim pockets, but may cause issues if you are one of those skinny fit lovers.

The UI seems fast and responsive and the handset seems to be holding up well, stay tuned for a barrage of videos iGyaan Style.

  • Tokyo Court Rules In Favour Of Apple Against Samsung On Patent

Tokyo Court Rules In Favour Of Apple Against Samsung On Patent

A Tokyo court ruled on Friday that Samsung Electronics had infringed on rival Apple’s patent for a “bounce-back” feature on earlier models of its popular smartphones.

The rubber-banding patent refers to the bouncing animation that takes place when a user scrolls past the end of a page while on a mobile device.

Samsung has already changed its interface on recent models to show a blue line at the end of documents, the report noted.

The Tokyo District Court issued a partial verdict Friday in favor of Apple. Damages were not announced. A final verdict is expected later.

Apple and Samsung are embroiled in similar battles in the U.S., South Korea, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Britain, France and Australia.

The Japanese court’s decision comes after the US Patent and Trademark office judged in April that Apple’s patent for the bounce-back feature was invalid, allowing older Samsung models that had a similar feature to remain on sale.

Samsung and Apple, the world’s two biggest smartphone makers, have each scored victories in patent disputes fought over four continents since the maker of the iPhone accused Asia’s biggest electronics maker of “slavishly copying” its devices. The companies, are competing for dominance of a global mobile-device market estimated by researcher Yankee Group at $346 billion in 2012.

Further details regarding the Tokyo court’s decision will be announced when the final ruling is handed down later today.

  • Samsung Launches The Samsung Galaxy NX Android Mirrorless Camera

Samsung Launches The Samsung Galaxy NX Android Mirrorless Camera

Today Samsung finally introduced the Galaxy NX, a mirrorless camera that runs Android with LTE connectivity and can use interchangeable lenses.

Like other Samsung mirrorless cameras, the Galaxy NX has a 20.3-megapixel APS-C sensor with hybrid autofocus. The rear LCD is a large 4.8-inch touchscreen, and there’s an electronic viewfinder as well. It’s capable of capturing fast action with shutter speeds as quick as 1/6,000 of a second, and ISO goes up to 25,600 for shooting in low light.

    Samsung Galaxy NX

The lens situation is definitely an improvement over past incarnations of phone-camera hybrids. You can attach pancake, telephoto, wide-angle, or even 3D lenses to the Galaxy NX Camera. However, they will have to be the Samsung NX lenses, which tend to be more expensive less abundant than other mirrorless options.

    Samsung Galaxy NX

Samsung Galaxy NX boasts 1080p Full HD video capture capabilities at 30 frames-per-second, and is also compatible with Samsung’s line of 3D lenses for extra-dimensional shooting. The Galaxy NX plays host to a 1.6GHz quad-core processor.

The Samsung Galaxy NX specs sheet is further enhanced by 3G and 4G LTE connectivity options via a SIM card, as well as dual-band Wi-Fi compatibility. It packs 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage expandable via microSD up to 64GB and runs Google’s Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS.

Also onboard is a Drime IV Image Signal Processor, which is promised to deliver speed and accuracy. Thanks to Android, there’s also access to a bunch of apps, such as Samsung’s own ChatOn client, S Voice, S Translator as well as the normal things you’d find on Android.

The Samsung Galaxy NX Camera release date and price for the Indian market is still to be determined.

Samsung Ativ One 5 Style AIO Launched

The all-in-one entry to Samsung’s Ativ PC line-up is the Samsung Ativ One 5 Style.

Samsung explained that the PC’s sleek design was meant to mimic that of the Galaxy S4 phone, featuring sleek curves, bevels, and edges.

The Samsung Ativ One 5 Style features a 1,920 x 1080 display with an unfortunate glossy reflective finish., AMD A6 quad-core processor, shared graphics, 4GB of memory, up to 1TB HDD, and a 720p camera. The One 5 has two USB 3.0 ports and HDMI in/out.

    Samsung Ativ One 5 Style

It runs a full version of Windows 8, which means that when Windows 8.1 finally drops later this year, One 5 Style customers will be able to get it for free.

It also has SideSync pre-loaded so you can tether a smartphone or tablet to it as a second screen or perform tasks like backing up photos.

There’s no battery so you can’t take it round the house with you like the Sony VAIO Tap 20 and Dell XPS 18. Nevertheless, it’s a nice all-in-one PC on first impressions.

Like the rest of Samsung’s Ativ range, we’ve got no pricing details or a specific release date beyond ‘later this year’.

Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus, ATIV Book 9 Lite Announced

Samsung today announced two new Ultrabooks, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus and Samsung ATIV Book 9 Lite.

Both feature aluminium unibodies and 13.3-inch screens with touch functionality. The one on the ATIV Book 9 Plus however packs the whopping 3200 X 1800 QHD+ resolution.

The ATIV Book 9 Plus supports a 256GB SSD, up to 8GB RAM and offers a battery life of 12 hours. At its thickest point its said to be 13.6mm, and weighs just 1.39kg.  They’ve also made improvements to the backlit keyboard and trackpad and the touchscreen touts Gorilla Glass, which makes it quite durable.

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus can be hinged in two positions, one is around 105 degrees and the other is a flat 180 degrees. Samsung says that the touchscreen display will offer an improved experience due to the use of OCR bonding.

Samsung also announced the lower-end ATIV Book 9 Lite, which ditches the high resolution display for a standard 1366 x 768 display, and features one of AMD’s new Kabini APUs under the hood. The machine does have a 256 GB solid state drive in its 1.44-1.58 kg body, but it’s not surprising to learn the battery life is lower than its flagship counterpart: apparently you’ll only be able to manage a maximum of eight hours out of this device.

As with the ATIV Book 9 Plus, the Book 9 Lite is slated for a Q3 release with no price announced just yet.
