  • The Marvel Mayhem Unearthed

    The Marvel Mayhem Unearthed

A lot of us who weren’t aware of the Marvel universe, suddenly found that it was a vortex of unending questions. The difference between the Lord of the Rings world and the Marvel world is that, you might have thought that the latter was connected but it really was just about different superheroes indulging in a whole lot of self-importance.

Now, if you suddenly started watching Thor without having watched anything else in the Marvel series ever, you would have a bunch of questions that even Thor 2 won’t be able to answer. It’s like watching Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix and asking yourself; why is Harry so upset that a guy named Sirius died? So, this piece is for those who want a basic understanding of the marvel world.

CNet.com has a very very useful and accurate timeline of the Marvel vortex. Here it is:

In order to understand the purpose of this continual warfare with super weapons we first need to get a basic idea of how it all began. Well, before the universe existed there were six singularities that existed in the forms of ingots, which were then combined into one infinity stone. This infinity stone was the axis of all the action because it had the power to control the entire universe.

    The Infinity Stone
    The Infinity Stone

The problem began 5000 years ago, when the Elves of Svartalfheim decided to use the aether of the infinity stone to destroy all the nine realms. Because, you know, that’s what Marvel baddies do in their free time. Oh, and these elves are no Legolas.

    Malekith absorbing the Aether
    Malekith absorbing the Aether

Now, the nine realms are connected by a cosmic tree called Igdrazil and Asgard is the protector of the nine realms. So, when Odin, the King of Asgard found out that Malekeith and his evil elves were about to destroy the nine realms, he went to war.

    Oden

That was to give you an idea of what could happen if the infinity stone was in the wrong hands. So, a couple of hundred years later, Oden went to war with the frost giants of Yodenheim because they were about to take over mid-gard aka Earth. After almost destroying them, he found a little frost baby whom he adopted – Loki. Suddenly, the Tesseract, which was another infinity stone found its way to Norway, which was on Earth. Actually, Odin hid it there, so that no one can find it. But, obviously somebody found it. Not just anybody, a Nazi official. Whoops.

    Tesseract
    The Tesseract

Then begun the story that is Captain America : the First Avenger. This was set in the 20th century where humankind was looking for a higher form of weapon during the first World War, and hence created Captain America (buff soldier who danced through the first half of the film. Period.) So, you’re probably asking – ok, where is the problem? Here it is. Captain America was a Jewish scientist’s second experiment and that turned out successful, but what about his first one? Well, he had created a super soldier serum way back in 1935 and had to use it on a Nazi commander whose name was obviously, Schmidt. That first experiment didn’t go so well, and turned the Nazi commander into Red Skull instead of a handsome and buff super soldier. Red skull found the Tesseract that was hiding in Norway, and Captain America had to get it back. Here, watch the trailer :

The film didn’t end with captain America either dead or alive, he had gone into hibernation and during this time his fellow comrades – Howard Stark (Iron man’s father), Peggy Carter and Chester Phillipps created S.H.I.E.L.D, otherwise called – Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division.

But soon, SHIELD got infiltrated by the remnants of hydra that were left behind after the defeat of Red Skull and then SHIELD  found Captain America’s best friend who was supposedly dead, and created the Winter Soldier. During this time, Howard Stark started creating this super armour which eventually went on to be used by his son Tony Stark aka Iron Man.

Then America needed some more super soldiers, so there was the experiment gone wrong, otherwise also called – the Incredible Hulk. The Hulk goes into hiding because of a minute accident, that involved his hand getting cut, his blood finding it’s way into a soft drink and a little innocent boy dying. Obviously, the American government was hunting for him. So, he went into hiding to some South American country. Watch the trailer below, in order to get an idea of the “Hulk-hunt.”

Now, after announcing himself as Iron Man, Tony Stark went on to open up the Stark Expo 2010 and did other cool things like meeting senators etc. During that time he also met a certain Natalie Rushman, got attacked by a Russian man (Vanko) during the Grand Prix, found a new ‘element’, and finally defeated Vanko aka Whiplash. Don’t heave a sigh of relief yet, theres more.

Let’s move on to Asgard now.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNQowwwwYa0

Odin’s son Thor was about to get coronated as the next King of Asgard, but was interrupted when the Casket of Ancient Winters, from which the Frost Giants could restore their power, got stolen. Thor, who is the strongest man in the realm with a huge lightning hammer and equally huge muscles (basically has everything except for a real brain), saw this as an act of war and immediately went over to attack the Ice Giants with his possy of four or five. This didn’t go down too well and so he was exiled to mid-guard aka Earth. There he met Jane Foster and fell in love with her, got  captured by S.H.I.E.L.D, got tricked by his brother Loki (who found out that’s he’s not really an Asgardian but is actually a Frost Giant), and finally he also destroyed the big evil monster that Loki sent down to earth in order to destroy Thor. But, love-struck Jane Foster was left behind on Earth, more about that later.

Now is the confusing bit – when all the Avengers come together to destroy the ‘abomination’. Yes, that’s the name of the monster that becomes of Emil Blonsky – the guy who fought Hulk in Incredible Hulk. After turning into the Abomination he fought Hulk and lost, Hulk then moved to Bella Coola. Then Tony Stark met a man named General Ross, who had been looking for Hulk too and Nick Fury approached Captain America (who is now awake) about The Avengers. During that time Loki infiltrated SHIELD and stole the Tesseract and Nick Fury decided to assemble The Avengers in an attempt to defeat Loki. Loki escaped and the avengers split up.

Meanwhile Jane Foster (Thor’s earthly lover), was obsessively trying to find a way to be with Thor, and instead came across the aether of the infinity stone that was hidden by Odin. The dark elves awakened from their slumber  and decide to attack Asgard. Thor eventually defeated them and went to his father to decline the throne of Asgard. But, we soon found out that it wasn’t even his father he was speaking to, it was Loki in disguise of Odin. Mind = Blown.

Now in the real world, Aldrich Killian (that guy in Iron Man 1 whom Tony Stark kind of forgot to meet) came back with some neat powers and he’s obviously had to do evil things with it. Meanwhile, a terrorrist named Mandarin threatened Iron Man and attacked his bodyguard. Tony Stark then gave his address to mandarin, and soon found out that the real Mandarin is not the guy on TV, it’s Aldrich Killian.Tony obviously defeated Killian and then underwent an operation to remove the arc reactor from his chest.

Captain America, was meanwhile working for SHIELD. Suddenly, there appeared an assassin named Winter Soldier who wanted to kill Nick Fury. Captain America soon found out that Winter Soldier is none other than his best friend Bucky, who fell off the cliff and apparently died back in the first film. He also found out that SHIELD had been infiltrated by HYDRA (Nazi division led by Red Skull in the first film), so he defeated Hydra but did not kill his friend the Winter Soldier.

Moving on to a boy named Peter Quill who was at some point abducted by aliens, grew up into an intergalactic thief. He stole something that Gamora (daughter of Thanos) was sent to get. Gamora however, was planning to betray her father and his servant Ronan, and ended up trying to steal the power ball from Quill on a planet called Xandar. They teamed up with a couple of other misfits in order to stop Thanos and Ronan.

And finally, the recently released Ant-Man – a small creature who can communicate telepathically with insects and such. Not too sure about the connection, but if you watch it you’ll definitely find one.

Obviously you still have tons of questions, therefore, for best results, you can actually just watch all the films. It’s an entertaining journey, which thankfully is not yet over.

  • Could ‘The Big Short’ Be Michael Lewis’ Third Oscar Nomination?

Could ‘The Big Short’ Be Michael Lewis’ Third Oscar Nomination?

After the success of Moneyball, another adaptation of Michael Lewis’ is all set to perhaps win itself an Oscar nomination. This year its an adaptation of ‘The Big Short’ which definitely seems like a fall movie you wouldn’t want to miss, even if you eventually hate it.

The film is about the 20s economic meltdown in America, and show four investment bankers predict the crash and “betting on the American economy”. If you watch the trailer you’ll find that you can expect some big ideas and a good amount of comic relief with lines such as – “If you tell me the difference between stupidity and illegal, I’ll have my wife’s brother arrested.”

The trailer most obviously, shows off their star cast – Brad Pitt, Steve Carell, Mr.Batman – Christian Bale and Ryan Gosling in a stereotypical looking investment banker avatar. The film is being directed by Adam McKay and will be closing the AFI festival on November 12th, 2015.

    Big Short 1
A shot from The Big Short with Steve Carell and Ryan Gosling

This is perhaps the first time we’ll be the watching a story about people who reaped the benefits of that economic crash that shattered the rest of the country. It’s a new angle with hopefully stellar performances.

The Big Short is slated for a limited release on the 11th of December, 2015 and a worldwide release on the 23rd of December, 2015. Meanwhile, if you’re bored, go catch Black Mass and The Intern and let us know whether they’re overrated or not.

  • The New Steve Jobs Trailer Is Here

The New Steve Jobs Trailer Is Here

There is one movie that has been on our minds since we heard about it first; yes, we’re talking about the new Steve Jobs movie. This movie comes with a lot of heavy names from showbiz, with Aaron Sorkin, acclaimed script writer with movies like the Social Network in his kitty, then they have Danny Boyle of Slumdog Billionaire acclaim as the director, and guess who’s playing Steve Jobs himself? Michael Fassbender. You’ll know him as Magneto, but he’s also done some great work with Quentin Tarantino and Steve McQueen. Oh, and he’s also going to be the new Macbeth soon.

We could go on with the big names in this film, but I’m going to leave that for the trailer that you can watch here:

This is the official trailer, but there have been other earlier trailers which seemed to have focused on different things than the official one. The final trailer focuses on his relationship with his daughter more than his genius, it seems to show him as a much more nuanced character than just being a complex genius. The film promises a lot with great reviews after its screening at the Telluride Film festival this year. Of course, there will be comparisons to the previous Jobs film, but then again even on the most shallow grounds of criticism you know who would emerge as the winner between Ashton Kutcher and Michael Fassbender.

Steve Wozniak himself is quoted saying “I felt like I was watching Steve Jobs,” while Fassbender’s co-actors have commented on his almost creepy transformation into Steve Jobs. We will know whether it’ll all pay off once the movie releases on the 9th of October 2015.

  • Watch John Oliver’s Hilarious Take on the Porn Ban in India

Watch John Oliver’s Hilarious Take on the Porn Ban in India

So, we have covered the whole ‘Indian government bans porn’ story and we’ve also covered the ‘Indian govt removes ban on porn’ story; but guess who else has a take on it? John Oliver!

He begins the headlines with a British-India joke and goes on to comment about how ironic it is that India – the land that created the Kama Sutra (because that’s all we’ve ever done), can actually ban porn and then revoke it.

Even though, his comments might be predictable and made from a generic knowledge of the idea of Incredible India; the video overall is quite hilarious, even as he goes on to throw in a little suggestion at the end too.

  • Sony Confirms Jumanji Remake Set to Release Next Christmas

Sony Confirms Jumanji Remake Set to Release Next Christmas

Most of us have watched the Robin Williams starring blockbuster move, Jumanji, released in 1995. The film is an adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s children’s book by the same name. Recent reports suggest, that Jumanji is ready for a reboot, with Sony Pictures releasing a date for the film – 25th of December 2016.

    Jumanji Image 2

It is rumoured that Zack Helm – writer/director of Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, was brought in to write the script, however there are no further details on who will actually direct or star in the film.

Here is a little information on the original Jumanji that was released in December 1995: it was directed by Joe Johnston, Robin Williams played the adult version of a boy who was sucked into the game years earlier and re-emerged in a present day (1995) neighbourhood when two children freed him from the game, and along with him, all the adventures hidden in the game.

    jumanji image 3

The cast also includes, Bonnie Hunt, Kirsten Dunst, Bradley Pierce, David Alan Grier, Jonathan Hyde (in two roles) and Bebe Neuwirth. The movie then, had special effects, that were impressive for its time. However, it is yet to be seen, how the present day technology and special effects can enhance the Jumanji experience.

  • The New Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer Leaves You Asking For More

The New Mockingjay Part 2 Trailer Leaves You Asking For More

The full-length trailer of Mockinjay-Part 2 is finally here. Mockingjay Part 2 is the final installment in the Hunger games series with it’s ‘reluctant heroin,’ Katniss Everdeen portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence.

The trailer sees a confident Katniss ready to end the games. For Hunger Games fans, this might be the equivalent of what the last battle at Hogwarts meant for Harry Potter fans. The last film, Mockingjay Part 1, took less than $100m worldwide than its predecessor, Catching Fire. Thus, this film hopes to return to its former grandeur.

Those of you who have read the books would already know that the film’s plot will follow Katniss and company as they prepare to storm Panem’s Capitol which will be portrayed, as in previous movies, in adventurous booby trap-filled landscapes.

The movie will release in Australia and UK on the 19th of November and in the US on the 20th of November, this year. However, it is still unclear when Hunger Games fans in India, will get to witness the epic conclusion.

  • The New Full-length Bond Trailer is Here

The New Full-length Bond Trailer is Here

The full-length version of the new film ‘Spectre’ directed by Sam Mendes, that is part of the James Bond franchise, has been released. The film is rumoured to be the biggest and most expensive Bond movie till date. The trailer opens with M (being played by Ralph Fiennes aka Lord Voldemort) questioning Bond about his unofficial and controversial trip to Mexico City for which he gets a typical Bond-like response “I was on a vacation”.

Instantly, one gets the new Bond vibe that Daniel Craig has so effortlessly created.

    Bond Cast Poster

The trailer seems to have all the ingredients of a successful Bond film – exotic locations in Mexico, fast cars, witty dialogues, a Bond-like story and a stellar cast. But we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. Sam Mendes has returned with Spectre and the trailer sees Bond going rogue to infiltrate a secret organization called Spectre. This movie is also expected to tie up lose ends from Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, especially where Bond villain Mr. White (Jesper Christensen) is concerned and deals with Bond’s past.

The star studded cast sees Daniel Craig reprising the role of James Bond, Ralph Fiennes as M, Christoph Waltz as the new villain (perhaps the only one who can compete with Javier Bardem),the underrated but absolutely brilliant, Ben Wishaw as Q, and of course, the new Bond girl Monica Bellucci. The film also stars Naomie Harris,Léa Seydoux and Andrew Scott (from Sherlock fame).

Dates for a worldwide release have not been announced although Spectre releases in the UK first on October 26, 2015 and in the U.S. on November 6, 2015.

Are these ingredients enough to make Spectre as smart and riveting as Skyfall? Watch the trailer below and let us know.

  • Now Enjoy High Frame Rate Videos on YouTube App

Now Enjoy High Frame Rate Videos on YouTube App

Today, Google has announced that the YouTube’s iOS and Android app will support HFR playback, meaning that you can watch Mario steer through obstacles at a smooth 60fps on your phone, just like you see it on your Xbox or PS4. The announcement follows the one Google made in October last year, as it rolled out HFR video for YouTube, allowing users to watch videos with a smooth playback on web browsers.

Over the past few years, High Frame Rate (HFR) video playback has been a craze around the world. The feature plays videos at 48-or-60 fps, as compared to the normal 24 fps playback. Videos playing in high frame rates appear silky smooth and without motion blurs. It is usually used by gamers who upload footage from video games and want the same quality they expect from a  PS4 or Xbox. YouTube currently offers HFR playback only on HD videos.

Since Google is updating the content from the servers, Android and iOS users don’t have to update their apps to access HFR videos. If the video has been uploaded in HFR format, all users would have to do is select the resolution, which will be marked as 720p60 or 1080p60. The app users won’t be able to view live streaming in HFR though. In May, Google extended HFR support for live streaming for desktop users.

If you have no idea how HFR video looks like, play the video below and select 720p60 or 1080p60 to enjoy the smooth playback. Trust us, you’ll know the difference.

  • First Trailer of ‘Snowden’ Shows Surveillance Disguised as Patriotism

First Trailer of ‘Snowden’ Shows Surveillance Disguised as Patriotism

Call him a patriot or a traitor, but Edward Snowden is certainly a legendary figure among whistleblowers. The new trailer for Snowden doesn’t feature the famous whistle-blower but shows the impact he left on the state of surveillance around the world.

Snowden created history when he revealed a large number of classified NSA documents in 2013, exposing how the government of the United States of America was using mass surveillance tactics not only around the world but also on its own citizens. The revelations were important as it showed not only U.S., but even countries like UK and India using mass surveillance to monitor the privacy of their own citizens, all in the name of protection. Currently, Snowden resides in an undisclosed location in Russia and is wanted in United States for treason.

Only time will tell if the film shows Snowden as a patriot or a traitor. While describing Snowden’s past, the trailer shows an upside flag of USA with the words “One nation under surveillance for liberty and justice for all”, hinting at the surveillance tactics used by the government disguised as patriotism.

Snowden stars Joseph Gordon Levitt as the titular character, Shailene Woodley (Divergent) and Nicholas Cage. The film is directed by Oliver Stone, who is best known for making politically-motivated films such as JFK and PlatoonSnowden will release on 25th December in U.S. theatres, while we should be expect a January release for India.

  • Watch: How a Realistic Dinosaur Was Created For ‘Jurassic World’

Watch: How a Realistic Dinosaur Was Created For ‘Jurassic World’

Jurassic Park is considered a cinematic milestone due to the ground-breaking mix of CGI and animatronics used to bring dinosaurs to life. Jurassic World proudly carries on the tradition of mixing CGI and practical visual effects to bring the park, which took 65 million years in making, to life. Although Jurassic World employs more CGI than its predecessor, the film also utilised some fine animatronics to create a closer look at the dinosaurs.

CGI stands for computer-generated imagery, using computers to add images in movies or TV shows.

A video released by Legacy Effects explains how a believable, life-like Apatosaurus was created for the movie. The scene in question is when Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard encounter a dying Apatosaurus. What is more impressive is that the emotions expressed by Apatosaurus in the film were achieved through the use of mechanics, not CGI.

Jurassic World, the latest installment in the Jurassic Park series, has already earned more than a billion dollars at the box-office and has become the most popular entry after the first Jurassic Park film.

Watch the video below to see how Legacy Effects created a life-like Apatosaurus.

  • Refuge: The First Short Film Shot Entirely in Moonlight

Refuge: The First Short Film Shot Entirely in Moonlight

For Sci-Fi movie fans, this film will suit your taste. But, if you are a camera enthusiast as well, this movie could literally inspire you to think beyond the regular rules and boundaries. Yes, ‘Refuge’ is a narrative short film that used only the moon as its light source. No fill lights, no backlights, no diffuse light – just light from the moon.

While filming, the lighting of the video is done shot by shot. This means that when you relocate the camera to shoot a different angle, the lights must be moved as well to ensure the subject is always lit correctly. This is one of the reasons why films take so long to shoot.

    Refugee ScreenShot

Director of the movie, Sam Shapson, said that Refuge could very well be the first narrative film that was shot entirely in the moonlight. The team behind the project recorded the footages in 4K using the Atomos Shogun Recorder and Canon Prime Lenses (24mm, 35mm, 50mm, 85mm). The film was shot with the overall ISO of 51,200. In very basic terms, ISO is the level of sensitivity of your camera to light. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive it is to the light while a higher ISO number increases the sensitivity of your camera. But higher sensitivity comes at a price – it adds grain or “noise” to the pictures.

    1311914308314077508

The whole movie was shot using a Sony Alpha a7S digital camera. On replying to the comments on their Vimeo page, Sam Shapson explained:

We tested all of the picture profiles and seriously considered pp7 for s-log, but unfortunately we couldn’t reconcile the way it handled noise in the deep shadows unless we graded down about 2 stops, which we couldn’t afford to risk committing to. Therefore we landed on pp6, shot wide open at 1/25 with the speedbooster. Lastly, the 4K from the shogun was utilized to give Neat Video every bit of info we could throw it to smooth out the noise. Still, I’m constantly reminding myself how the images here are so much more clear and vibrant than what my eyes were seeing out there in the dark. Still blows me away.

The resulting video is, unsurprisingly, far from absolute perfection, but the Sony’s low light capabilities are absolutely unbelievable.

    Watch the movie below:

REFUGE // A Moonlit Short Film from Sam Shapson on Vimeo.

The video definitely looks unique. I think it is awesome that directors are willing to go this far and bring science fiction fans everywhere something new to get excited about. It’s certainly the most interesting use of the technology we’ve seen so far. What do you think about the short film that was shot using only moonlight? Comment below.
