  • Sony Planning to Bring Back Crash Bandicoot

Sony Planning to Bring Back Crash Bandicoot

We love being teased from time to time. And if it’s a tease about a game that we have grown up with then the hype is next level. We’ve already been jumping with joy with the trailer for Street Fighter V. Now, another childhood memory ready to jump and spin back into our lives is the much-beloved Crash Bandicoot.

It is possible that we may be jumping to conclusions as Sony has not confirmed a new Crash Bandicoot game. However, there have been some recent rumours and teasers that are just too exciting to be wrong now. NECA Toys’ toy director Randy Falk said Sony is bringing back Crash Bandicoot. Check out the video below to relive your favourite Crash Bandicoot games.

At a recent toy fair in New York, Falk said that Destructoid has “a lot of stuff going on with Sony.” The toy director continues to praise Sony and its titles, saying “I see they’re bringing Crash Bandicoot back, so there’s some great stuff there.”

If that wasn’t enough to tease a new Crash Bandicoot game then how about a tweet from Sony PlayStation’s Middle East account of an image of Crash Bandicoot with the line “Most wanted person….where are you Crash?” Now, a company as big as Sony wouldn’t tease fans like that if they weren’t planning on delivering something exciting in the near future, would they?

  • Rise of the Tomb Raider Wins 2016 Writers Guild Award

Rise of the Tomb Raider Wins 2016 Writers Guild Award

Square Enix’s action-adventure game, Rise of the Tomb Raider has won the “outstanding achievement” award for video game writing at this year’s Writer’s Guild Awards. The game managed to overcome stiff competition from other impressive narrative-driven titles such as The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt, Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, and Pillars of Eternity for the honor.

Rise of the Tomb Raider had the merits of its plot judged by a panel from the Video Games Writers Caucus, in addition to members of the Writer’s Guild.

    Rise of the Tomb Raider

Considering the failure of the last Tomb Raider games, Rise of the Tomb Raider definitely was a step up from the initial reboot of Tomb Raider in almost every respect imaginable, and as such is well deserving of the award.

Rise of the Tomb Raider was released for Xbox One and Xbox 360 in November 2015. The PC edition arrived in January, while a PlayStation 4 version will come out later this year.

According to sources ,the Elite X3 it will be powered by Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 820 SoC, and will come equipped with a 5.8-inch Quad HD display. As far as the rest of the specs go,the phone will have 64 GB of inbuilt storage and the  camera setup will be an impressive  20 MP shooter on the back and a 12 MP one on the front.

Probably the most interesting part of the rumour is that it pegs the device for a launch at MWC 2016, which if it indeed is true, would be a great thing for the Windows platform which is seeing its presence in the market diminish with each passing day.

  • Tips to Prolong Smartphone Battery Life Cycle

Tips to Prolong Smartphone Battery Life Cycle

With an abundance of apps and services available today that require a significant amount of juice to run, we all have at some point of the other felt the pain of our smartphone battery dying on us. Honestly, for all its superpowers of computing, your smartphone is still at the mercy of the Lithium-Ion battery that powers it.

iGyaan today comes to you with tips and tricks to better care of your smartphone’s battery so that you can prolong it’s life, and delay the inevitable.

    iphone battery

    Power Cycling the Battery

Lithium-Ion batteries run for a limited amount of charge cycles before they start showing signs of deterioration. This process can be slowed down significantly, and battery life prolonged by understanding and using these charge cycles properly.

For optimum use of these limited cycles, partial discharging of the phone is recommended. Complete discharges and full charging of the battery is to be avoided as it puts undue pressure on the Lithium-Ion pack. The Lithium-Ion battery inside your device is a complicated beast to tame, and as such it prefers constant and even charge patterns to irregular ones.

For an average user, trying to discharge the smartphone’s battery down to 40% most times, and then juicing it up back to 80%, before removing the charger is recommended. This habit mixed with a complete discharge once every 30 cycles, or say a month, will ensure a happy battery set to a nice charging pattern.

    Lose the Heat

    maxresdefault (1)

No amount of stressing on this one single point can be enough. Lithium-Ion batteries in your phones have no bigger enemy than heat. It is their Kryptonite. The battery inside your smartphone will degrade at a faster pace if the thermal levels aren’t to its liking. Regardless of it being used or not, if it runs hot, it sees its maker.

So if you love the battery inside your phone enough, try what’s recommended, and keep the phone in cool conditions. Best tip here would be to avoid charging it inside a hot car, or charging/using it when the phone gets too hot. FHor emergency charging situations, car chargers should be avoided, and power banks should rather be used.

Say No to Non- Branded Power Banks and Chargers

    sony_usb_charger_power_bank_mobile

Non-Branded chargers and power banks can cause irreparable damage to your smartphone’s battery. Irregular power surges could lead to the device’s battery frying itself in a minute. Even if you’re lucky enough to avoid a disaster like this, using such power banks and chargers to juice your phone could over time lead to the battery prematurely aging, and as a result, starting to malfunction.

Lithium-Ion batteries as stated above prefer continuity, and can malfunction if there are irregularities when it comes to power being fed to them. Cheap car chargers and power banks are notorious for not being able to maintain power flowing through them, and as such should be avoided in any case.

Another quick tip here would be to avoid plugging your phone into any random USB ports for charging. Laptops, wall outlets and branded power banks that promise a constant ampere rating should be used.

    Avoid Wireless and Fast Charging

    lg-g3-wireless-charging

Don’t hate us for this, but avoid Wireless charging as much as possible. This fancy new tech that the race of smartphones has been introduced to is convenient alright, but it also does harm to your Lithium-Ion battery. The inductive, wireless chargers in the market generate waste heat during the charging process. This waste energy also heats your battery in the process causing it to run hot, and degrade at a faster pace.

Fast Charging, on the other hand, does not produce waste heat but instead forces the Lithium-Ion battery to charge in a way that it does not like. These batteries inside your phone like to be fed slow and steady, and any change to that habit upsets them. But having said that, this one’s an extreme measure really. Since fast charging only applies the extra voltage at the start of the cycle which does not last too long this particular nifty charging trick does not end up doing too much damage after all.

  • Video Shows How to Land a Plane in an Emergency

Video Shows How to Land a Plane in an Emergency

It used to be and still is that travelling by airplanes is one of the safest means of transportation. But there are times when one tends to feel just a little anxious or one has seen too many airplane hijacking movies where the hero, a non-pilot, safely pilots the plane to land.

Tim Morgan, a commercial pilot, claims that anyone can safely pilot and land a Boeing 737 in case of emergency after watching his 10-minute video.

The video was posted on Quora as a response to the question,“What should I do if the pilot passes out and I (with no flight training) have to land the plane?”

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqcXstB7UJ0

Now, it should be understood that this is a near-impossible scenario and there are measures that are taken by airlines to make sure that such a scenario never presents itself. There are at least two pilots in every plane and can’t eat the same meal on the flight in an event of food poisoning.

Nevertheless, the video serves as a nice piece of knowledge which is easily explained and gives you just that added bit of assurance before flying. Others will just have to rely on the countless hours of MS Flight Simulator you played as a kid.

  • Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus Review

Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus Review

Huawei’s sub-brand, Honor, unveiled the Holly 2 Plus in India recently. This smartphone is the successor to the Chinese company’s Holly from 2014 and comes to Indian markets along with its elder sibling, the Honor 5X.

The Holly 2 Plus will go head to head in a clustered market segment against handsets like the Asus Zenfone 2 Laser, Micromax Canvas Nitro 4G, Samsung Galaxy On5, and the Lenovo Vibe P1m, which are aggressively fighting for supremacy in sub Rs 10,000 segment of the market. Huawei, to its credit, has come to the battlefield with a phone which at least on paper looks like a strong contender. So without further ado, let’s find out how it does in our detailed review.

    honor holly 2 review 13

    Overview

Honor Holly 2 Plus will start retail at Rs 8,499 starting 15th February, and it comes equipped with premium styling for the price. This is your average run of the mill device and accordingly comes with a respectable 2GB of RAM and a quad-core processor at its heart for day to day use. What sets the phone apart, is its 4000mAh battery, an aspect where its predecessor failed miserably. The battery coupled with its premium for the price looks puts in a compelling argument for the Holly 2 Plus.

    Build Quality and Design

    honor holly 2 review 8

The Honor Holly 2 Plus is built impressively for the price. The phone to its credit looks and feels more premium than its price would suggest. Coming in at 9.7mm, it’s not exactly sleek and slender, and when compared to its predecessor it does feel a bit fat which to be fair rather looks good on the phone’s body.

The phone has simplistic construction and features flat edges. The construction comprises of what looks to be high-quality plastic which has been given special attention for a metallic finish. The phone has been adorned by a metallic rim which runs around the sides of the phone adding a dash of class to the phone.

At the top of the phone sits a 3.5mm jack, and on the right lie the volume rocker and power button. A stylish looking speaker grille along with a micro USB port are placed at the bottom of the phone. The sound output and clarity from the phone’s stereo speaker grille is also above average.

    honor holly 2 review 6

Coming to the front, and we find a nice 720p display dominating the front of the phone which owing to the IPS tech produces decent colors and does well when being looked at from unfavorable angles. Text looks crisp on it, but the display could have been a bit brighter, and as such colors look a bit washed out when the phone is looked at under direct sunlight.

Another issue with the phone’s display is that it’s easily prone to fingerprint smudges which reveal themselves to be a menace while using the Honor Holly 2 Plus under the sun. The phone also does not come with any kind of scratch protection glass which seems like a bad choice on the manufacturers part.

    honor holly 2 review 16

Adding greatly to the aesthetics of the phone is a removable back cover with a cut out for the camera and the LED Flash. The back of the phone is probably one of the strong points when it comes to the looks of the Holly 2 Plus. The back cover which is made completely out of plastic features a subtle texture which not only helps in maintaining a steady grip while holding the phone but is also pleasing for the eyes to look at.

    Hardware

Honor will launch the Holly 2 Plus in what will be a single 16GB storage variant expandable up to 128GB with the use of a microSD card. The phone has 5-inch 720×1280 display capable of producing 296 ppi. Underneath the hood, it is powered by a Mediatek MT6735P running four Cortex- A53 cores clocked at 1.3Ghz and a Mali T720MP2 GPU, paired with 2GB of RAM.

Providing juice to this beast is a massive 4,000 mAh battery that can also double up to charge other power hungry devices in need. This smartphone also comes with Smart Power 3.0 and quick charge capability.

    Specs

    Honor Holly 2 Plus

    Display 5-inch HD IPS display
    Resolution 1280 X 720 (401ppi)
    Processor 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6735P Cortex-A53
    GPU Mali T720MP2 GPU
    RAM 2GB
    Storage 16GB
    Rear Camera 13MP
    Front Camera 5MP
    Battery 4,000 mAh
Connectivity Dual Sim 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS, and MicroUSB
OS Android 5.1 with EMUI on top
    Price  Rs 8,499

    Performance

The phone with its 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6735P processor coupled with 2GB RAM performs buttery smooth at most times. Swiping between pages, browsing and even multitasking to an extent is handled quite impressively by the phone. To its credit, no heating issues were observed during our interaction with the phone.

The phone responds efficiently to the users day-to-day productivity and multimedia requirements. The Honor Holly 2 Plus does not come with too much bloatware on board. Ram optimization by Huawei is good as the user on an average gets around 1.2GB RAM to play with.

    IMG_4605

Honr Holly 2 Plus is no powerhouse  in terms of under the hood specs, and as such no miracles should be expected of it. The phone did not do anything out of the ordinary in its benchmark and scored a below average 32119 on Antutu.

Honor Holly 2 Plus clocked a score of 2195 on Vellamo chrome benchmark test which again was a bit underwhelming when compared to other budget offerings out there in the market. Single Core performance of the handset though was relatively better, scoring 1067, while the Multicore stress test score of 1454 also failed to impress.

Honor Holly 2 Plus with its 720p display is an average performer when it comes to gaming. We tried GPU intensive Asphalt 8, and the arcade game, Shadow Fight 2 and the results were nothing great. The latter ran flawlessly owing to its light weight, but Asphalt 8 did have its instances of stuttering.

    Camera

Huawei has bumped up the camera on the Holly 2 Plus from the 2014 model, and the handset now gets a 13-megapixel unit with an f/2.0 aperture on the back to play around with. It also comes with a single led flash to help it with low light pictures. The front of the phone comes with a 5-megapixel shooter for clicking selfies.

Both cameras produce good looking pictures. The beefier, 13-megapixel unit clicks good images in bright surroundings, but low light images left us asking for more. The front-facing camera was good, if not great in our interaction with it.

The phone comes equipped with features such as Geo-tagging, touch to focus, face detection, panorama, HDR, and is also capable of recording 1080p videos at 30 fps with software stabilization.

    Multimedia and Display

    honor holly 2 review 9

The Phone’s display features a HD IPS panel running the show, which produces accurate color reproduction, and has good viewing angles, but to its disadvantage the colors don’t pop the way they would on a crisp AMOLED display, leaving images and videos looking washed out when viewed under bright light.

Huawei has also chosen to not equip the display with any protective shield such as the Gorilla Glass and hence the display is prone to damage easily. Another negative of the display is that its outer glass is a fingerprint magnet which we did not appreciate.

The phone lacks a physical home button, and as such the Honor Holly 2 Plus carries capacatative button on the display itself.

    honor holly 2 review 15

On the multimedia front, the phone’s mono speaker which divulges sound through a stereo speaker grille at the bottom does not disappoint. The audio output is loud with good clarity. If you use the phone with a decent pair of headphones the Holly 2 Plus will produce good results for audiophiles.

    Software and UI

The Huawei Honor Holly 2 Plus comes with Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box with a custom EMUI 3.1 Lite skin which with all that it offers is quite different from the functionality of stock Android. It took us time learning our way around the nifty little tricks that this custom skin provides, but once we got used to it, the usage experience was quite convenient.

The phone comes preinstalled with good features embedded in the UI such as multiple power saving modes like the ultra power saver, and protected apps. The latter is a space where you can according to your needs tell the phone to keep certain apps awake while the phone’s display is off. This particular feature goes a long way in conserving battery on the phone.

The EMUI 3.1 Lite also enables users to use the phone as a power bank by toggling on a simple option housed in the settings page.

    Phone Networks and Battery

    honor holly 2 review 3

The Honor Holly 2 Plus supports LTE, along with 3G and GSM baseband.. It also supports CDMA baseband for users who want to enjoy the advantages of both. Honor Holly 2 Plus is a Dual-SIM phone and you can use either GSM or CDMA . Both of these networks will support 4G capabilities. Network reception was good and we faced no issues from the phone’s end. Using the phone for calls was better than expected. The phone did maintain decent signal strength at most times on both SIM card slots that this handset offers. Other connectivity options on the phone include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS/A-GPS/GLONASS, and MicroUSB support.

    honor holly 2 review 11

Battery life on this phone is average despite the massive 4000mAh pack that it comes equipped with. In our interactions with the phone, we easily got 5-6 hours of talk time which to be fair is not that great considering the beefed up battery it comes with.

Music playback forced the phone to give up in about 10 hours time while video playback on a loop saw the phone asking for a charger in about 7 hours. Internet usage drained the battery in 6.5 hours total. Not impressive numbers we say. Honor Holly 2 Plus for all its battery might does not do enough for our liking.

But on the bright side, the phone comes equipped with quick charge capabilities, and Smart power 3.0 which as the company claims on 10% charge will enable the phone to go for around 20 hours but]in reality should give you around 4-5 hours which however is pretty good.

    Function

    Time

    Talk Time 5-6 Hours
    Music 10 Hours
    Internet on LTE 7 Hours
    Internet on WiFi 6.5 Hours

    honor holly 2 review 0

    Conclusion

Huawei has jumped into the sub Rs 10,000 segment with a decent offering. The Honor Holly 2 Plus has its vices, but having said that, these vices are to be expected at the price point that the Chinese company will be selling the phone for in the country.

At Rs 8,499 Huawei gives you a premium looking phone which does not look or feel cheap in any way. It even throws in a mammoth 4000mAh battery into the mix to sweeten the deal for buyers. But what it asks the buyer to compromise on in return are flaws such as a display which when used in bright surroundings looks dull, and is prone to cracks, and scratches, because of there being no protective shield installed on it.

Honor Holly 2 Plus for what it’s worth is a decent offering in isolation, but when compared to the myriad options in the crowded segment that it plans to conquer, its flaws are magnified. Firepower at the hardware end starts to look a bit limited in comparison to other phones such as the Asus Zenfone Max, Zenfone Laser which come equipped with better internals or even the Coolpad Note 3 which brings with it a fingerprint sensor for about the same price as the Honor Holly 2 Plus. Honestly, with a lot of options to choose from, the Holly 2 may not be our first bet. See some other recommended products below.

  • Apple’s Original TV Show to Star Dr. Dre

Apple’s Original TV Show to Star Dr. Dre

Apple is going the Netflix way and is making an original TV series that will star popular rapper and Apple-owned Beats co-founder Dr. Dre. The show is called Vital Signs and is a dark drama which will have six 30-minute episodes showing Dr. Dre responding to different emotions. It is semi-autobiographical in nature and will also start Sam Rockwell and Mo McCrae.

This will be Apple’s debut venture in original content and, like Netflix, the episodes will release all at once for viewers to binge on. The series will debut on Apple Music, according to reports. It is still not clear when and how big the launch of the show will be. One of the reasons behind going with Dr. Dre for its first TV series is due to Dre’s ties with Apple on Beats.

Another reason could be Apple trying to get a piece of the success that followed Straight Outta Compton, which was a story about Dre’s life as a rapper during his time with the N.W.A. According to reports, Dre has already begun filming for the show.

    Apple TV 8

Early in January, we had reported that Apple was working on a project called “Apple Video” and has partnered with ABC, CBS, and Fox. Apple has also worked out details with Sony Pictures, Universal and Disney and may be negotiation with some other studios.

Apple has been working on a video streaming service, according to the rumour mill, for the past six years. It seems 2016 will be the year of release. With the recent news of Netflix going global and launching in 190 countries worldwide, Apple may have to move fast if it wants to get on with the competition.

Humans may have mastered technology enough to create humanoid robots (and also freak themselves out in the process with the threat of Artificial Intelligence taking over the world). But no matter how advanced we might be on the tech-front, there is still more than just a little tweaking that our gadgets require right now. The hoverboard fire test below would serve to emphasise our point.

The video looks so painful that adult supervision is recommended even just for watching it. As the hoverboard beautifully goes up in flames, it justifies the recent hoverboard scare which had led Amazon to take the product off its website.

This pretty, little hoverboard catches fire while charging and spews flames in all directions as a result of over-heating. Watch it burn like a firecracker in the video and let us know if you still think this previously cool piece of tech is still cool enough.

The new shares granted to him lifts the value of Sundar Pichai’s stake in Alphabet to more than $650 million which is around 14,400 times the average wealth of a US citizen but still comfortably below the shares the stakes held by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, whose net wealth is around $34.5 billion $35.3 billion.

Google’s stock price has reportedly grown over 17% since Sundar Pichai took charge of work at Alphabet’s prime business earning the company billions in revenues.

Supreme Court Rules in Favour of Cutting Internet Access when ‘Neccessary’

The Supreme Court of India today ruled that it is ok for districts and states to cut access to mobile internet for a limited time to prevent law and order problems in the country. It basically allows the State to use its curfew powers to block internet access during public agitation that can turn aggressive and disturb the public.

The case was first brought to the court’s notice by student activist Gaurav Sureshbhai Vyas who challenged the police’s right to ban internet services last year for 63 million users in Gujrat during the Patinder agitation as a way to check unfounded rumours.

Vyas’ petition also contended that a complete ban would restrict the citizen’s right to free speech. However, The senior judge who ruled in favour of the ban said that “It becomes very necessary sometimes for law and order.”

The PIL said that while internet services cannot be shut down completely, the access to it can be restricted. The decision to ban internet services when “necessary” puts a serious issue of free speech into question on the one hand. On the other hand, the move is natural for a government that wants to control violent situations from getting worse. The Supreme Court also stated that the ban will only block mobile internet service and not Wi-Fi and broadband services
