Finally! Twitter Now Lets You Retweet With Comments

After several years, Twitter has revamped its Quote Tweet feature to include more space, as demanded by its users. Twitter has finally announced the new update, ‘retweet with a comment’, that will allow users to add a comment to any tweet. Twitter began testing this feature last summer and it was officially released on 6th April. It is currently rolling out for iPhone and web users.

    Twitter retweet

One of the main complaints about ‘quote retweets’ in the past was that the users hardly had any characters left to add a comment. The new update allows users to embed a tweet in their tweets and add up to 116 characters to any tweet, regardless of the fact of how many characters the original tweet contained. This will allow them to share and comment on tweets without having to shorten the original tweet, that means that the context and the meaning remains unchanged.

Right now, the update is being rolled out to iPhone and web users.

  • We are at WAR !

    We are at WAR !

In June of 2010, a small personal website began with technology updates and tips and tricks on how to do things on your mobile phones and laptops. iGyaan was never started with an intention of supremacy or competition. It was barely a year into inception and Google, a large search engine company and the basic backbone of the modern Internet, approached us. They claimed that “iGyaan and you (Bharat Nagpal) as a content creator have the power to reach out to a massive audience and to be heard.”

It has been an incredible journey growing up as an independent technology website, not funded by an outside entity and not backed by large corporates. The fight to exist in this industry is far more lethal than a regular book smart individual could understand.

We began to create content at a time where the internet was beginning to reach out as a medium to many in our country. A country which follows modern and western policy but holds onto traditional values in hope of not losing what has already been lost.

[pullquote_left]You Won’t Last, India is not an Internet Country[/pullquote_left]

Stuck in an industry, just like modern Indian politics, full of “experienced” journalists and industry consultants, show hosts and television anchors, who ruled with a dominance only to resemble that of Nazi Germany. “iGyaan, is it a blog ?” they would ask looking down upon the existence and creation of such an entity. “You won’t last, India is not an Internet country,” they added.

We faced many other hurdles growing up, which were not necessarily limited to the industry. Infrastructure has been very poor in our country. Sure, we have freedom of speech, but that is pushed down by the lack of education of governance bodies. Walking into public places (even places like the Lodhi Garden in New Delhi) with a camera has often led to problems with the police, who asked us to furnish press identities. We were pushed out of malls and coffee shops, whose managers and staff said “No video sir!”.

We have fought with poor internet connectivity for years, 512 kbps uploads, 8 Mbps downloads (limited to 150 GB) were simply not enough to run a media company. Leased line internet was the only way to go. However, it remained out of reach, pertaining to budget constraints of large expenditure on equipment and large human resource overheads.

Just like any other big industry that needs a big shake to come into realization, the technology industry has had many such reforms. No mobile phone brand would let us review their devices, and we never depended on them. We had sources, mostly buying everything that we reviewed, or tying up with vendors to ensure that we could bring out a basic, simplified review of what technology meant to a layman.

In April of 2011, Samsung held its annual Forum at a hotel in New Delhi, launching the Samsung Galaxy S2. At the gates, a lady, equating closely with the “Gestapo” refuses entry to any online entity, asking us to furnish press documents, at an event mainly open to the public.

We were not the first online review website, but we were the first online video review website in the country. We fought with each and every press handler, each and every PR team and each and every corp comm manager, to get the online community some importance.

Micromax was a young company in 2011, a new digital and media press manager of the company, a young fellow in his 20s said that he had seen some of our work. He invited us to the launch of what would be Micromax’s foray into the Android domain, a handset called the “Micromax A60.” A closed room briefing session where Rahul Shama, Co-Founder Micromax, introduced us to a bunch of handsets including the A60 and the A70.

About four years in, a lot has changed for the industry and India as a country. One can simply not ignore the online space, many blogs, and online reviewers have emerged, the war for existence still continues. We haven’t been happier for the tech industry, where many of our readers feel that many more will catch up to where we are. Such is the nature of this industry, and there will always be a younger, dynamic mind taking the place of a pre-existing entity.

Today, iGyaan is an industry name, and we proudly say that most technology brands know and talk about us. We are registered press, a process that is an impossible task for any private online company, but we managed. We are recognized and realized in international communities and global tech companies have come to know of our existence. We can also proudly say that we began or at least put into motion what tomorrow will be the technology medium of India. The online space has evolved and a lot of others have come into the picture, aspiring and evolving into known mediums of communication.

By the end of 2011, things had begun to change, we were awarded “The Best Technology Website of the Year”, the best “Online Reviewer of the Year”. Awards, a sense of achievement, these were few of the many that were to come.

We have never claimed that we are “number one” or “the best” or “better than others.” We have never looked at any other company, website, blog, or medium as a competition and never will. That is the nature of iGyaan. It was founded on one principle, we will speak of what we like and won’t of what we don’t. We will point out what we dislike and applaud whatever is worthy. There are many who claim otherwise, push out fraudulent numbers, buy visitors to their website or likes to their Facebook pages, spend money on websites that allow you to buy subscriptions, unaware of existence of tools to look past all that.

Our war, however, is still ongoing, and it has only gotten worse. But our fight, is not with the others in the online domain, our fight is with another kind of enemy.

We are at War, with the traditional media, a kind that boils down to purely paid news creation. Samsung spent millions of dollars for the Launch of the S6, including in India. The Korean company paid over 500 people just to attend the launch in China. It was a similar scenario in India, one of many television channels that was paid in lakhs to give coverage to the launch of their handset and were only allowed to speak good about the product.

Samsung set up a custom production booth at the launch in India where many were allowed to shoot and talk about the phone in a controlled environment. When we refused to shoot in their settings, we were pushed back and not allowed to shoot the handset at all. Seeder handsets (pre-launch handsets) were given only to those who would get their stories approved by Samsung’s digital PR before publishing. Online review handsets were refused in India, where as most media, including Television and Print are now testing the devices.

Sure, Samsung invited many bloggers and online media, but many of them were just happy to be able to create videos, losing out on what the essence of technology reporting is. Samsung India has pretended to care, and many incidents in the industry have taught them to care. However, every time the company structure gets shuffled, new guys come in, and the organization reaches back to its old media roots.

Companies like Micromax, which are now more mature as brands (read: cash rich) have gone back to traditional media, advertising heavily in the television space and print media. They rarely hand over review handsets or information of their upcoming products, to online communities anymore. They formed a new brand with the name “YU,” and they reached out to many for reviews. However it was short lived and the connect with the online media was limited to basic interaction, and just like any company, behaved poorly to bad reviews.

New brands: OnePlus, Xiaomi and even Gionee, who claimed that online media is stronger than tradition forms of media. OnePlus and Xiaomi made purely by online sales, in India, get all starry eyed in front of traditional media. Gionee claimed that “online is the future.” Holds large media briefings and launches ensuring the best of times for traditional media and TV anchors, sure the online media is invited and taken on this journey, only to be sidelined and pushed around.

We are at war, with those lacking a basic sense of how this industry works, many who say we are paid by companies to write good reviews. Mostly those dimwits that think Apple invests in us because our name is “i-Gyaan”. We are an independent online company, and we do sponsored stories, yes, but they are clearly marked as “sponsored”. We have no problem in telling the world that we need to make money. And”unfortunately” we are not a charitable organization, and even if we were, we don’t expect any charity from the community.

    [pullquote_left]Pathetic Overpriced Crap[/pullquote_left]

We are at war, yes we are, with the lack of proper education and with the lack of proper content creation. With the lack of proper support and with the lack of basic understanding of the technology industry in our country. We are at war with those who think this is an easy way to make money, and those who think they can use fraud, and our name to get devices for free. We are at war with tech giants, the likes of Apple, and mostly Samsung who think they can rule the market by selling pathetic overpriced crap and paying people to say good about it. We are war with new companies who have lied to us and to the consumers promised something and delivered something else. We are at war with companies who will lie their way into their customer’s pocket and then not be held accountable because our government is crippled. Based on a system that is crippled so that these companies can exist without fear.

We are at WAR, with companies like Airtel, proud communication companies, monopolistic giants, that break norms like “net neutrality” and add things like “Fair usage Policy”, when they had power enough. Modern day drug dealers that change prices as per convince and add VAS costs to user accounts and bills without recourse.

We are at war, with a system of governance founded on the backbone of the internet, but has neglected to create a basic infrastructure for its users. We still do not have 4G/LTE networks while the world talks 5G and future technologies. Heck, we still do not have workable 3G, countless emails complaining about the lack of network and customer support are sent to us daily, by our readers. We wish we could help and we will continue to try to help.

We are war, and our war has only just begun.

  • Microsoft to Introduce Mobile-Based Payment System to Take on Samsung and Apple

Microsoft to Introduce Mobile-Based Payment System to Take on Samsung and Apple

Smartphones have become an even essential part of our lives. With the addition of payment systems, smartphones will soon take over the role of your wallet. While Samsung and Apple have already introduced their payment systems, other manufacturers are joining in. Microsoft, the makers of Windows Phone devices, have also announced that they will be unveiling their payment system soon.

Microsoft had showcased a tap to pay feature on its devices at a conference for Windows hardware makers in China. It was said then that this feature would not require support from the network operators. Just like Samsung and Apple Pay, this feature will also be based on NFC.

Microsoft’s plans were brought to light by Faisal Khan, a banking consultant. He found that Microsoft has already got permission from the American state of Idaho and has applied for licenses in all the states of the country.

Mobile payment was available on Windows phone through the Softcard app but the service closed down when Google bought Softcard. Bill Gates had predicted, after the launch of Apple Pay, the technology will soon be available on all smartphones. Considering the speed at which things are moving, it might be easy to visualize such a future.

  • Spartan Vs Internet Explorer : 6 Factors That Give Microsoft’s New Browser an Edge

Spartan Vs Internet Explorer : 6 Factors That Give Microsoft’s New Browser an Edge

When Microsoft made official its biggest innovation of the year, Windows 10, everybody was excited to hear about all the modifications it brought with it. It was not just another Windows upgrade, but was a whole new effort to push something fresh. Among other revelations that thrilled the audience, a huge amount of attention was gathered by the modern browser Spartan.

Spartan is an entirely new web browsing platform for Windows 10 that holds a bunch of really cool new features. The browser has been designed to meet the demands of the today’s fast striding world with a pinch of simplicity. Spartan is the way ahead for Internet Explorer (IE) and a dive into the revolutionary world of the future.

Here are some of the major differences that makes Spartan stand apart from the fast-fading Internet Explorer.

    1. Faster Rendering Engine:

    spartan edge

The most vital and unnoticeable change that makes Spartan a real spartan is the all-new rendering engine ‘Edge’. It is the core of Spartan and is much faster than the existing renderer, Trident. It loads complex pages many times faster than the IE, making it a strong competitor of Google Chrome.

Meanwhile, Windows 10 comes with two rendering engines as the latest Windows version comprises of two browsers. The Explorer works on Trident, while Spartan is powered by Edge; the latter is the default rendering engine on Windows 10.

    2. Voice Assistant Cortana:

    cortana-03

Cortana is another significant development that has made Windows and Chrome users restless to try their hands on it. The web browser assimilates with the company’s digital assistance service, Cortana. Through the smart assistance, Windows 10 users can get information on flights, hotel bookings and other vital data on their browser. One can track a particular flight just by typing its name and all the data like departure time, arrival time and current status will appear.

    3. Note-Taking Mode:

    project spartan

Spartan has made it easy for users to highlight a specific section on the web page. The note-taking tool facilitates users to add comments and annotations to the web pages with the help of stylus. These pages can also be sent to a friend. As all the browsers support the web note service, the messages can easily be read by any of your friends or colleagues using a different version or OS.

    4. Clutter-free reading mode:

IE will be replaced with Spartan which will be the browser of the future for Microsoft.
IE will be replaced with Spartan which will be the browser of the future for Microsoft.

One of the major modulation that is sure to mesmerise users is the clutter-free reading mode. The feature crops the important details and throws it ahead to focus on the information. The rest unwanted stuff is dumped in the background by default, giving users a de-cluttered view of the web page.

    5. Customizable reading list:

    spartan reading list

It’s an another new feature in Spartan that offers users a facility of read PDFs and web pages offline. It’s a cross-platform feature that syncs URLs between devices. The feature is almost exactly like what Apple has already offered with its Safari browser.

    6. Simple interface with Group Tab Feature

    spartan interface

Microsoft has kept its web browser simple because the more simple, the more elegant it looks. The interface is quite light, which makes it all the more appealing, and the icons have been designed for easy and quick understandability. Along with that, there’s a group tab feature that keeps multiple tabs in an organized manner. One can split work tab from personal tab to declutter the messy screen.

With the launch of Spartan, Internet Explorer – one of the vital means to bring internet to the masses since 1995 – has taken a backseat in Windows 10. It is estimated that Project Spartan will soon be a pivotal part of the golden tech history.

  • With the Launch of Airtel Zero, Airtel Violates Net Neutrality Yet Again

With the Launch of Airtel Zero, Airtel Violates Net Neutrality Yet Again

A few months back, Airtel was on the receiving end of much public backlash following its decision to introduce differential charges for various online services. This was the first direct assault on Net Neutrality principle in India and the telecom major was forced to roll back the new policy. The company has introduced a new service called Airtel Zero which attempts to split services but with a friendlier face.

Airtel Zero is a new platform that will let companies buy data to offer their apps to consumers for free. It will allow users to access these apps without incurring data charges. This can be seen as a direct violation of net neutrality as it will give priority access to some apps over others.

Net neutrality principle states that all data on the internet should reach their destination with equal speeds and service providers cannot charge extra for priority access. Airtel will rope in extra revenues through Airtel Zero and companies with enough capital would be able to pay for this access while the budding apps will be left back to fend for themselves.

E-commerce giant Flipkart is also receiving criticism for signing up for the service that violates net neutrality. Airtel has reportedly called the new service a “B2B platform that is open non-discriminatory and will be a win-win for customers and businesses.” They added that they intended to include as many vendors as possible. But they haven’t made public the agreement or the fees paid by the vendors to reach the consumers. This raises the question whether the platform will be inclusive of new apps or will give priority access to just a few apps.

In the light of recent worldwide demand for tougher net neutrality laws, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India(TRAI) has brought forward a consultancy paper in the public domain. It has asked stakeholders that include the general public to share their views on net neutrality.

It is Airtel’s second attempt at undermining net neutrality, and it can be potentially dangerous for the growth of the information based economy that demands a free and fair internet. So if you want to get your voices heard at TRAI and want the Indian government to keep the internet open for all, you should send in your comments at [email protected]. You can find more information on the net neutrality consultation paper on TRAI’s website.

  • Myntra to Completely Shut Down its Web Division and Become an App-Only Platform

Myntra to Completely Shut Down its Web Division and Become an App-Only Platform

The online fashion retailer Myntra has decided to shut down its website completely. From May 1 this year, the online vendor will become an mobile retailer, limiting itself to the app only. It’s a first by any e-commerce player to slay off its web division to become a mobile only entity.

We earlier reported about Myntra is shutting down its mobile website, now at the end of this month, its website will also shut down.

The reputed publishing daily says that although Myntra officials haven’t commented on the report, they’ve got a trusted insider source who has revealed about the company’s advertising and marketing plans. According to the source, the same will soon be made official by the company.

    myntra

With the earlier announcement, Myntra officials unfolded their revenue source and stated that almost 80% of the traffic comes from mobile. Sales rate is also high through mobile application, reaching 70% as compared to the desktop platform.

The growing innovation in tech sector is drastically changing the shopping behaviour of buyers. The e-tailer has seen rapid growth rate in just nine months and Flipkart is likely to follow soon. This all indicates the progress in the mobile technology domain and the ability of Indians to adapt quickly.

  • Quick Look at the Coolest Features of OnePlus’ OxygenOS

Quick Look at the Coolest Features of OnePlus’ OxygenOS

A couple of days back, OnePlus launched its promised Android-based ROM OxygenOS, thereby reducing its dependance on Cyanogen. It’s the first in-house version of OxygenOS by the Chinese firm and is based on Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

The new custom ROM is built on “back to basics” approach and is said to be light with subtle essential features. The company hasn’t played on gimmicks or bloated features, and has built OxygenOS to provide maximum performance and battery life.

Let’s have a look at its features:

    1. Quick Notifications Customization

    notification

The OnePlus’ OxygenOS offers the Quick Settings option which brings with itself the freedom to customise tiles. In the notifications bar, users can add, remove and re-arrange toggles and can make them disappear just by turning them off. This way, you can have an absolutely empty notifications tray.

    2. Freedom of Customization

    file manager

OnePlus One users really have the freedom to customize with OxygenOS. One can pick from the various wallpapers and set it as thier lock screen. Besides which, users can choose from hardware and software navigation keys from the Setting menu and can disable the capacitive touch screen buttons at the bottom. They’ve provided various short keys for the hardware navigation keys like adjusting the backlight, customizing home button, menu button and more.

    3. Off-Screen Gestures

    gestures

OxygenOS incorporates many off-screen gestures like Double tap to wake up the screen, drawing O to open camera, drawing V to toggle flashlight and pressing three fingers together to start music.

All the other features are unaltered and OnePlus has opted for a minimal-change strategy. OnePlus will release more versions of OxygenOS and the company has asked users’ to provide feedback to help them further make a better and user-friendly OS. The Chinese brand hasn’t released an OTA update and the One users have to install the update using a 6-step installation guide, which is slightly tedious for an average smartphone user.

  • LG Teases its New User Interface Ahead of the G4 Launch

LG Teases its New User Interface Ahead of the G4 Launch

The South Korean equipment manufacturer LG is forcing spotlight on itself, by revealing information about the LG G4 bit by bit. A recent disclosure by LG’s display manufacturing department claimed that the G4 will have an enhanced 5.5-inch Quad HD display and now LG has officially announced the arrival of its ultra-advanced user interface, UX 4.0.

A teaser video publicized by LG exhibits the UX 4.0 as a step towards making UI friendly to customers. The clip depicts quite a lot of features that seem to be a step in the right direction. The Quick Shot feature allows users to click photos instantly. One doesn’t need to unlock the screen first and surf into the vast array of apps to start a camera. Just tap the volume button twice and the camera will be ready to shoot.

    LG-UX-4.0

The camera comes with various camera modes along with Expert mode that is claimed to have DSLR-like qualities. This mode is said to use geo-location to group photos into an album taken at a single location.

Then there are a few other smart injections like its updated Calendar app, Gallery, Smart Board and Smart Alert. With the Calendar on LG G4, users can drag and drop any event to Calendar from their social networking site. The refurbished Gallery now lets you commemorate memories by grouping them according to date or location.

    lg ux4.0

The Smart Board feature accumulates information from various apps within your device like Calendar, heath and music, and throws them on a single widget as collective information. The Smart Alert is where the smartness of the new UX 4.0 gets apparent. It not just notifies users about the weather, but also gives suggestions depending on the climatic conditions. Which means it will suggest you to go for a swim, play basketball, go for cycling on a sunny day.

Nevertheless, we would be able to see UX 4.0 in action only with the launch of LG G4 on April 28. Till then, here’s the official teaser:

  • Google Might Offer Free International Roaming on Its Mobile Network

Google Might Offer Free International Roaming on Its Mobile Network

Mobile phones have given a boost to communication like no other technology before it. Instead of looking for a telephone in every country you go to, the pocket-sized device is always handy to connect you with your loved ones. But the aspect of international calling that dissuades people from using their mobiles more often while traveling abroad is the high roaming charges, Google is set to challenge these exorbitant charges by introducing free international roaming.

The Silicon Valley giant is working on creating its own mobile phone service and is in talks with operators like Hutchison Whampoa to allow free roaming to its customers. Google will collaborate with other network operators to use their existing infrastructures to offer its services. The company has said that it will be a small scale network but considering Google’s massive resources, the company might aim for bigger scales in the future.

A tie-up with Hutchison will give Google access to countries like UK, Ireland, Italy, and several other countries. It is said that with this move, the company will force the American telecom companies to offer similar services to their US customers. The telecom firms of US like Verizon and AT&T make a lot of profits but are also known for their dismal services.

The recent advancements in the field of communication which includes voice and video calling through apps, free roaming and other features might be troublesome for the telecom companies. Sooner or later the telecom companies will have to shut down their prime service of voice call and text messaging as internet based apps take over their markets. It will be interesting to see how they manage to stay relevant in the coming future.

  • Samsung Apparently Paid 500 People to Attend the Galaxy S6 Launch Event in China

Samsung Apparently Paid 500 People to Attend the Galaxy S6 Launch Event in China

The launch occasion of Samsung’s latest flagships, Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, was grand. The event witnessed close to 1,000 people and most of them appreciated both the devices. But what if all those admiring attendees were actually pretending to be lured by the fresh offering? A latest report surfaced by Shanghai-based news outlet The Paper confirms that around 400 to 500 people present in the press conference were planted there to promote the products.

According to the report, a recruiting specialist was hired to bring fake fans and they were paid a certain amount to appear in the event. The source contacted one of the recruiter and he notified that around 100 people were brought by him to the Galaxy S6 launch conference. Some other recruiters were also hired for the job and the total number of paid fans reached 400-500. This accounts to half the population attending Samsung’s official launch event.

The source also brought to light that it was the demand of the Korean electronics firm to bring young people to the show. As per the company’s directions, the fake attendees should look like students and don’t have to be more than 30 years. The company paid each of the clients 30 yuan ($4.80) for an hour and the recruiters were paid 20 yuan ($3.20) to bring each person. The paid fans were asked to like Samsung’s page on Baidu as well. The Paper also disclosed that the hired fans were informed to tell the press that they were true Samsung fans and were fascinated to see Samsung’s brand new handsets.

However, the company is denying to all the reports and is calling them “totally groundless and bogus.” A statement released by Samsung reads –

Our findings have indicated that under no circumstances has anyone been hired or given money to attend the event. In fact, the more than 1,100 attendees, including consumers and industry officials, have all been formally invited to the Shanghai Culture Square where the event took place.

It’s not the first time Samsung is accused of adopting unfair practices. Back in 2013, Samsung was charged for spreading negative remarks about HTC through Taiwanese students.

Samsung is losing a major chunk of its fan base in China to Apple and Xioami. The newcomer in the smartphone business, Xiaomi, has showed tremendous results and is leading the race in China and India as well. Samsung doesn’t want to rely on its smartphones only and is trying every possible bit to regain its lost status.

Where is Cyanogen’s CM12S for the OnePlus One?

OnePlus users were finally delighted to see the launch of the new Oxygen OS by the company. It had been in works for quite a while and it has now finally reached OnePlus One devices. In the meanwhile, the company was also supposed to launch the new version of CyanogenMod for its customers but it seems like they have to wait a while to get their update.

OnePlus has said that the new update has been delayed due to certification issues at Google. Cyanogen is proactively working to release the new update, and its boss, Kirt McMaster was visibly frustrated with the mounting queries for the date of arrival. It was the OnePlus bosses who had promised an estimated time of arrival (ETA) for the latest CyanogenMod OTA update.

An interaction with the co-founder of CyanogenMod, Steve Kondik was posted on the forums of OnePlus. Steve said that they are in a scramble mode and really want to bring their hard work to the public. In one of the latest posts, Steve has said that it might take about four more days to get the certifications done. He added that he might write about what all transpired behind the scenes to bring the new update once it came to the market that we bet would be exciting to read.

The comment was posted on Friday, hence we should expect the update within the next two days. OnePlus updates have faced delays in the past and though it is appreciable that it wants to give top-notch service to its customers but it’s rather necessary to give them a quality bug-free update.
