NTT Partners With The Vatican to Digitize Precious History

The Vatican Apostolic Library is a rich repository of historical knowledge. The library was founded in fifteenth century by Pope Nicholas V Parentucelli (1447-1455). This library has over the centuries gathered 82,000 manuscripts, 100,000 archival units, 1,600,000 printed books, 400,000 coins and medals, and a lot more valuable pieces of history. Considering their importance and delicateness of these items, Vatican invests heavy resources in their maintenance and preservation. Vatican decided to give access to the general public to a large number of documents and they partnered with NTT to bring the rare documents to the Internet.

Japanese IT service company NTT provided the digitization solutions to Vatican. NTT Data is a leading IT services provider and global innovation partner headquartered in Tokyo, with business operations in over 40 countries. Their emphasis is on long-term commitment, which combines global reach with local intimacy to provide premier professional services varying from consulting and systems development to outsourcing.

One of their key service includes archiving digital manuscripts as high-definition data, supported with special measures for long-term storage and safekeeping. This includes use of a highly sustainable storage format, metadata management to increase search efficiency, optimized search algorithms and a user-friendly search interface.

NTT brought in its digital archive technology AMLAD which lets users view high definition images when viewed through a special application. The delicate documents were scanned with great caution and archived.

Most of the ancient texts require intense care as they are written on delicate materials like papyrus.

AMLAD (Advanced Museum Library Archives Deposit) is a service that helps to preserve and disseminate valuable ancient books, manuscripts, prints, visual and audio data into digital data. Those digital archives can be opened to the public as indexed data that is searchable from computers, smartphones, and tablets. NTT has also worked with the Akita Prefectural Library in Japan where they digitized thousands of images and documents. They also consolidated data from multiple databases from multiple institutions into one easily searchable formats.

Vatican has signed a contract worth Euro 18 million with NTT to digitize about 3000 manuscripts by 2018. In the long term Vatican wants to digitize all the treasures in its library. It would sure be an herculean task as it would amount to about 41 million pages in its entirety.

“We gladly accepted the collaboration of NTT to support the further improvement of the project of digital archiving of our manuscripts using their innovative technologies,” explained Monsignor Cesare Pasini, Prefect of the Vatican Apostolic Library. “In so doing, we will further nurture our mission of preserving these treasures of humankind and making them more widely available and known in a deep spirit of universality-including the universality of knowledge and the universality of collaboration and agreement with institutions and companies throughout the world.”

History is an essential bit of our existence whose lessons pave the path for the future. LG’s Curvy G Flex 2 Hits the Indian Market, Priced at Rs. 55,000

At the CES this year, LG got a huge round of applause for its sleek, refurbished curvy device G Flex 2. It was the complete overhaul of the original G Flex released in November 2013. The Korean multinational company today released the innovative smartphone on the Indian soil at its annual tech show. The smartphone comes with a hefty price tag of Rs. 55,000.

The upgraded smartphone has got a specifications boost and sports a more flexible body. When compared to its predecessor, the latest G Flex 2, when bent, can restore its original position in around 10 seconds, while the first generation LG G Flex took three minutes to achieve that feat.

Microsoft has announced today that it will be bringing its premier operating system, Windows 10 to 190 countries around the world this summer. The company also hinted at plans to expand its market share in the portable devices market. Microsoft has announced that under its deal with Xiaomi, a select group of Mi 4 ‘Power users’ will get a chance to test the new Windows 10. Xiaomi made clear that it is not a partnership between the two companies, and Xiaomi is just “assisting” Microsoft in its efforts.

OnePlus Assures Lollipop, OxygenOS Updates Arrive Before March End

OnePlus has put an end to the speculations. The Chinese company has provided a set release date for Lollipop updates on One devices, and it looks like the firm will not keep its huge fans waiting too long. Earlier, the Chinese electronics producer issued the upgrade launch date and had disappointed the customers by not delivering the same. But this time, OnePlus has spread a word through the official forum page of its website saying that Android Lollipop will be available on or before March 30.

Xiaomi is India’s Biggest 4G Device Vendor for January, Knocks Down Apple and Samsung

The battle to become the top smartphone vendor is getting tougher and steamier. After conquering China’s smartphone market, Xiaomi has once again proved itself, but this time of India. According to a report by the market analysis firm CyberMedia Research (CMR), the Chinese electronics maker Xiaomi brought down the leaders Samsung and Apple, and emerged as the biggest 4G handset seller in India. The fresh records are of January this year.

According to the data released by the research firm for January, Xiaomi is ahead of the reputed smartphone manufacturers and holds a market share of 30.8 percent. Apple, Samsung, HTC, and Micromax follow respectively at 23.8 percent, 12.1 percent, 10 percent, and 8.3 percent. Few months back, another analysis firm reported Apple as the frontrunner of the fourth quarter of 2014. The Cupertino-based tech giant held the 45 percent market share, which was followed by HTC and Samsung.

These figures showcase the shipment of only 4G handsets in India. Samsung still leads the pack with 17.3 percent market share which includes feature phones, smartphones, 3G and 4G mobile phones. Lava, Microsoft, Micromax, Intex have comparatively lesser share with 11.9 percent, 10.3 percent, 9.7 percent and 8.5 percent respectively.

This outcome by CMR is a massive blow for the world’s largest smartphone vendors. Although, the numbers represent the sales figure of a month only, but it’s an indication that Samsung and Apple need to take Xiaomi as seriously as any other contender out there.

Latest Google Chromecast Update Adds a Super Useful New Feature

The Google Chromecast has given a new meaning to entertainment by allowing us to stream content onto our television sets with minimum difficulty. For this to work, you can check whether your television has HDMI-CEC enabled from the manual, and a remote with a dedicated play/pause button. The HDMI-CEC enabled device, the Chromecast or the TV, can then be controlled using the one remote without any further setting up.

Boeing, one of the leading aerospace giants, is getting ready to grab a major big deal which will be signed by some of the biggest names in the technology industry. If it gets the deal, Boeing will be responsible for building high-throughput communications satellite for companies such as Google, Amazon, Facebook or Apple.

High-throughput communications satellite offer high data transmission rates for uploads and downloads. Jim Simpson, the vice president of business development and chief strategist for Boeing Network and Space Systems, told Reuters that the tech companies were actively looking to enlarge the area under internet connectivity to expand their business. Mr. Simpson also added that they looking to provide gigabytes, terrabytes, pedabytes of capabilities to the companies.

There are many companies who are looking into the possibilities of establishing a satellite based space internet. Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Greg Wyler’s OneWeb are the ones who are fiercely contesting to be the first to establish a global constellation of internet providing satellites. SpaceX has already got $1 Billion in assistance from Google for their venture of building 4000 lower earth orbit satellites. The tech companies are excited with these developments, as more coverage means new customers for their services. It seems like the world will soon be covered in a blanket of internet providing satellites.
