Myntra and Flipkart Adopt App-Only Model, Shut Down Their Mobile Websites

From now customers of two of India’s largest e-commerce websites, Flipkart and Myntra, will not be able to make purchases on the go, unless they decide to download their apps. Both the online retailers have shut down their mobile websites and will be operating only through their mobile application.

From now on, whenever a user visits Flipkart.com or Myntra.com on their smartphones, a page will appear that will request you to download the application.

    Screenshot_2015-03-21-11-00-02

The move by the Indian retail players is not surprising as they were already pushing people to try their mobile version. Timely discounts had been announced for app shoppers, which has led to a tremendous growth in traffic by the mobile segment. According to the information shared by Myntra, “90% of its traffic is being generated through mobile devices. Close to 85% of this traffic is driven by Android, iOS and Windows platforms.”

    Screenshot_2015-03-21-10-58-02

India comprises of a large chunk of smartphone users and majority of them are potential customers who wish to make purchases while on the move. With the growing innovation in the tech sector, shopping behaviour of buyers is changing drastically. Myntra started its shopping app in May last year and within a short span of nine months, it has now become an app-only platform for mobile customers.

The Head of eCommerce Platform at Myntra, Prasad Kompalli stated about the company plans:

Myntra will be launching new innovations on the app in the future to make shopping a more seamless and personalised experience. The rate at which Indian consumers are adopting shopping on the app, is faster than even the US and China.

Shutting down the mobile websites is a progressive step. More than anything else, it indicates the dependance of mobile users on applications. But would you want to add an extra app on your dashboard?

  • Xiaomi Sues Website For Illegally Selling Its Products

Xiaomi Sues Website For Illegally Selling Its Products

Chinese handset maker, Xiaomi, will be taking legal action against websites who are selling its phones illegally in India and infringing on the company’s trademark. The issue came into prominence when Ericsson alleged that Xiaomi was selling it’s products illegally through third party websites. The company is going through a patent dispute with equipment maker Ericsson.

Ericsson had alleged earlier this month that Xiaomi was selling Mediatek chipset powered smartphones through the site Xiaomishop.com. Ericcson claimed is it as a violation of  the interim order of the Delhi High Court that allowed the company to sell only Qualcomm chipset based smartphones. Xiaomi, in turn, told the court that the site was not an authorised seller of its products.
They’re infringing on trademarks and they’re making the world believe that it’s a genuine Xiaomi site, which it is not. The products sold on these websites are not meant for India and are sold at significantly higher price points. We have written to them multiple times, and we will be taking legal action against them.
Jain added that though Xiaomishop.com site is not functional anymore, the company will still proceed with legal action against it and four to five other sites, which were selling Xiaomi products illegally.

As of now, the only authorized Xiaomi sellers in India are Flipkart and Airtel. Xiaomi is also in talks with manufacturing partners Foxconn and Inventec to set up a proper manufacturing base in India following the Indian law. India is the company’s second-largest base after China.

  • Flipkart Imposed With Rs. 23.51 Crore Fine For Evading Taxes

Flipkart Imposed With Rs. 23.51 Crore Fine For Evading Taxes

Flipkart is the king of the e-commerce space in India. In just a few years of its existence, it has made a name for itself as a trustworthy marketplace. The company has a base of more than 26 million registered users. But it found itself in an unfavorable situation when the Income Tax department slammed a penalty of Rs. 23.51 crore.

The Income Tax (IT) department from Noida and Ghaziabad carried out raids at the Dasna based warehouse of the company in Ghaziabad. The books of the firm were seized by the authorities, and several irregularities were observed. According to the officials the company collected taxes from the consumers but didn’t deposit it with the tax department.

The officials of the department also said that the trading partners listed by the company were also bogus firms. These are some serious allegations against Flipkart and all it said in return is that it would extend full support to the authorities.

E-commerce companies have worked under the government radar for a while but recently there has been an increased focus on their workings. E-commerce markets are also opposed by the conventional brick and mortar shop owners as they provide heavy discounts that discourage customers from buying the products from shops, especially in the electronics arena. We’ll be looking into this story as more details arrive; keep checking this space for more.

  • Xiaomi’s Last Sale Sells 90,000 Units Before its Probable Ban

Xiaomi’s Last Sale Sells 90,000 Units Before its Probable Ban

Xiaomi is in a bit of a legal tussle with Swedish communication giant Ericsson. The Chinese smartphone maker was banned by the Delhi High Court(DHC) on a patent infringement complaint by Ericsson. The court later allowed the company to sell devices with Qualcomm chipsets until January 8th. Xiaomi is making the best of this sale period afforded to it by the DHC and brought huge stocks for its flash sale today.

According to the companies official FB page they had 50,000 handsets of the Redmi Note 4G and 40,000 pieces of the Redmi 1S. This was the first time the company brought two devices for a flash sale in a single day and the reason is pretty apparent, its the ban that starts from January 9th.

As usual only only folks who registered yesterday, the 5th of January were allowed to participate in the sale. The flash sale for the Redmi Note 4G was scheduled at 2 PM whereas the Redmi 1S sale was scheduled at 5 PM.

According to Xiaomi India head Manu Kumar Jain, the Redmi Note 4G went out of stock in just 5 seconds. He also added that there were more that 5,00,000 registration for todays sale.

The Redmi 1S which went on sale at 5.00 PM too went out of stock almost immediately. According to Manu Jain, it went off the shelves in 4 seconds. Today’s sale shows that the interest in the handsets by Xiaomi hasn’t waned much in India. The company is growing strong worldwide and its strategy of providing high quality specs through online flash sales have really paid off.

The next sale is listed to be held on January 13 which is still tentative as the ban on the sale of the devices begins starting January 9th. The High Court of Delhi has set a date of hearing on February 5th 2015. The company now has a big fan base in India and it will be disappointing news for the company if it loses on such a giant market.

Update: Xiaomi has reported later that due to unforeseen logistic delays they were only able to bring 20,000 units of the Redmi 1S for yesterday’s sale.
