• Gionee Launches the Elife S7 in India Priced at Rs. 24,999

Gionee Launches the Elife S7 in India Priced at Rs. 24,999

Gionee showcased to the world its super slim flagship smartphone, the Elife S7, at MWC this year. The Chinese smartphone manufacturer today brought the handset to India at an introductory price of Rs. 24,999. The device beats the present sleekest smartphone holder, the Elife S5.5, and boasts comparatively lesser dimensions and weight.

The Elife S7 is 5.5mm thick and features 139.8×67.4×5.5mm dimensions. The new smartphone is 6.5gm lighter than the Elife S5.5 and weighs a mere 126.5gm. Considering the exterior of Elife S7, then the device sports an aluminium magnesium unibody design. It flaunts a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED full HD screen with 1920×1080p resolution. A Gorilla Glass 3 display protects it from accidental slips.

Gionee-Elife-S7Taking about the innards of the phone, Gionee Elife S7 is equipped with a 1.7GHz MediaTek MT6752 64-bit octa-core processor with Mali-T760MP2 GPU. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage space, which is expandable via MicroSD card slot. The gadget is powered by Android 5.0 Lollipop.

It fits a 13MP snapper at the back with LED Flash and auto-focus, together with an 8MP shooter upfront. A 2700mAh battery is loaded with the device to keep it running for one full day. The dual-SIM device comes with connectivity options like LTE support, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Meanwhile, the successor of the S7 might be arriving in India in June, as per Times of India. Temporarily titled as Elife S8, the expected device could carry a 2.5GHz Snapdragon quad-core processor with 3GB RAM. The device will reportedly pack some enhanced photography capabilities with 16MP rear and 8MP front camera. Meanwhile, the Chinese firm hasn’t come out with any such information and the news about Elife S8 should be taken with a pinch of salt.

At Rs. 24,999 the Gionee S7 seems to be priced higher than its competitors in the market. We’d recommend prospective buyers to go for the OnePlus One instead. Especially since the company released its very own operating system based on Android Lollipop 5.0.2 called the OxygenOS.

  • Gionee Ready to Manufacture in India; Awaiting Government Clearance

Gionee Ready to Manufacture in India; Awaiting Government Clearance

Chinese handset manufacturer Gionee has announced its plan of manufacturing its devices in India, but is currently awaiting clarity on the government policy before taking the dive.

President of Gionee, William Lu said,

It depends on the (government) policy, we are ready to manufacture in India

Gionee India Head Arvind R Vohra said “It depends at what stage the (Indian) government plans to facilitate manufacturing, as far as we are concerned, we are ready at every stage.” He further added, “we have to find vendors for our produce. If the need is for an assembly line we are ready now but would rather go for deep manufacturing. IUNI will be a separate company and we are hopeful of completing the registration process by April-June 2015.”

The company plans to scale up its manufacturing units from 60 million annually to 75-80 million. The Chinese manufacturer’s latest device S 5.1 was recorded as the thinnest phone in the world by Guinness Book of World Records, although subsequent to this, thinner phones have entered the market.

Gionee may be among the first smartphone company to initiate manufacturing handsets in India itself.

  • Gionee Launches Marathon M3 with 5000mAh at Rs. 13,999

Chinese mobile manufacturer, Gionee has introduced the successor to its M2 smartphone, Marathon M3 which comes a 5000mAh battery. Interestingly, even though there is no official information about the pricing and availability, it was yesterday available on an e-commerce site at Rs. 13,999.

Of Course, the major highlight of the device is the massive 5000mAh battery which lends it 2G talk time of 51 hours and 32 hours of the same on 3G networks. The Marathon M3 predecessor, M2 was launch back in february which came with 42oo mAh battery.

On the hardware side, the devices sports a 1.3GHz quad-core Cortex-A7 processor coupled with an ARM Mali 450MP GPU and 1GB of RAM. It is a dual-SIM smartphone that runs Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box and features a 5-inch HD (720×1280 pixels) IPS One Glass Solution (OGS) display.

    gionee_marathon_m3 2

It comes with 8GB of inbuilt storage, which is further expandable via microSD card (up to 128GB). It sports an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash, while there is a secondary 2-megapixel front-facing camera also onboard. • Specs of the ‘World’s Slimmest Smartphone’ Gionee Elife S5.1 Leaked

Specs of the ‘World’s Slimmest Smartphone’ Gionee Elife S5.1 Leaked

Back in July was when we first heard about the Gionee Elife S5.1 via its TENAA certification. While, the handset is yet to be officially launched, a set of very clear images has been leaked online.

If you have a quick look at the Gionee Elife S5.1, you can easily mistake the device for an iPhone as it borrows all its design aesthetics. Along with its design and look, the handset’s specifications have also been leaked.

    gsmarena_007

The Gionee Elife S5.1 will feature a 4.8 inch screen with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels. The AMOLED display is expected to be crisp and come in bright colour variants. The model is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad core Snapdragon 400 processor and 1GB of RAM.

However, one notable thing about the smartphone is that it doesn’t have a micro SD card slot for storage expansion and comes with 16GB of internal storage space. Furthermore, there is no news about the 32GB variant. These days with rapidly increasing size of apps and games, that may pose to be a problem.

The device has an 8-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 5-megapixel front camera. The phone supports 4G LTE connectivity, 3G, Wifi, Bluetooth and runs on Android version 4.3 layered by the company’s Amigo 2.0 interface.

It is said that when the device comes to the market, the company will offer four different color choices to choose from including Pink, Turquoise, Black and White. The pricing is yet to be revealed.

  • Gionee Brings The GPAD G5 With Hexa Core Processor to India

Gionee Brings The GPAD G5 With Hexa Core Processor to India

Chinese phone makers Gionee today brought the GPAD G5 to India. The phone follows an edgy design pattern and is quite a looker. Gionee sure knows how to make their phones look good.

The GPAD G5 gets its processing might from a 1.5 GHz Hexa Core processor. It is running on Android 4.4. The device comes with 1 GB RAM and 8 GB internal memory which is expandable up to 32 GB. The device has a 5.5 inch IPS HD display with a Dragontrail screen. Dragontails are made of thin glass without the fragility and have high scratch resistance.

The phone's edgy design sure is appealing to look at.
The phone’s edgy design sure is appealing to look at.

The camera on the back of the device is an 8MP shooter while the front sports 2 MP selfie camera. Considering Gionee’s history, the camera should have great clarity and feature which we’ll confirm when we get our hands on the device.

The device gets its juice from a 2400 mAh battery which sounds less when considering the 5.5 Inch screen and the Hexa core processor. But Gionee has managed some good OS optimization which leads to a good battery back-up, we’ll check out how the phone manages its juice later.

The GPAD G5 has some decent mid segment specs and is priced at Rs. 14,999 which is a good price when compared to every brand except Gionee’s compatriot, Xiaomi.

Gionee Aspiring For Size Zero: Rumored To Launch a 5mm Smartphone

The Chinese phone maker turned heads when they launched world’s slimmest smartphone. Now, China’s TENNA, recently certified a mid-range model that’s even thinner. If you think that the S5.5 was the best Gionee could do, then you might have been wrong. Gionee is most probably in process of launching another slim phone which will only be 5mm thick.

The new handset, code-named as GN9005, will strictly be a mid-ranger, featuring a 4.8-inch HD (1280×720 pixels) AMOLED display. The device will run on quad-core 1.2GHz processor (presumably Cortex-A7) with 1GB RAM. It will run Android 4.3 Jelly Bean out of box.

In terms of camera, the GN9005 will be equipped with an 8MP primary camera at the rear and a massive 5MP front facing shooter for wooing all those selfies lovers. Other technical specifications include 16GB of internal storage and a modest 2,050mAh battery.

There is no word on the launch date or pricing right now but as it is visible on leaked product images, the phone is expected to be released on telecom operator China Mobile. We hope to get more details in the coming weeks, till then check out the alleged specifications of the phone.

  • #LetsTalkShop with Arvind Vohra from Gionee

#LetsTalkShop with Arvind Vohra from Gionee

Gionee’s recent arrival into the mobile market has proved the theory that not all “Chinese Goods” are poorly made. A few recent handsets from the company have proved to be quite the segment leaders. The Gionee S5.5 being the slimmest phone in the world and the Gionee E7 with its impressive camera.

We got a chance to sit down with the Country Head of Gionee in India,  Mr. Arvind Vohra , and discuss the company, its operations and its future in a market like India.

We started of by discussing why he chose Gionee as a brand and how important it was to him, the answer seemed quite obvious. He believed in the company and its operations and the fact that he knew the global president personally helped.

Arvind claims that service is a key ingredient to providing a hardware, and as a manufacturer if he doesn’t have the right parts then the whole process is flawed.
As a Manufacturer, if i don’t have spare parts, then there is something very wrong.
Operating in a market like India has become much more easier than before, and most of the challenges are overcome by doing everything in the manner its supposed to be done. As far as comparing India with any other market , he feels since he hasn’t worked anywhere else therefore he does not have a benchmark.
There are no problems in operating in India, things have become much easier. You can register a company in three weeks, and as long as you do everything right you will be in a good place.
He is very keen on “exploiting OTA” updates and claims that most devices will get the OTA update for KitKat in the coming weeks. Which is avery big thing for the market he is operating in. The Elife series phones will be always be OTA supported as long as the hardware allows.

The next lineup of devices will include LTE phones, as Arvind feels that the country is ready to exploit the resource, and if Gionee can provide hardware then they will.
We like to exploit the OTA updates, and almost all our devices launched recently will get the OTA KitKat Update. Going forward all our devices will launch with LTE, especially since China is transitioning we feel India will soon be ready.
Arvind sees no point of a tablet and fails to understand why people use them, the day he finds the real use of tablets he will start making them.

  • Gionee Elife S5.5 Review : Slim Awesomesauce

Gionee Elife S5.5 Review : Slim Awesomesauce

Gionee announced the ELife S5.5 at MWC 2014 and launched it in India early April. For a price of Rs. 22900/- the handset also takes on the moniker of the “Slimmest Phone in the World”. But, does this handset compromise on performance and capability because its slim? Lets find out in our Review !

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 14

    Overview

The Gionee ELife S5.5 comes only a year after the company started operations in India. With claims to become Top 5 vendor in less than 5 years the company seems to be headed in the right direction. The few handsets in the past have shown us that the company not only focuses on bringing handsets into the market but also ensures that the user experience is good. With previous handsets like the E6 and E7 winning us over the S5.5 shows a great mix of design and performance at a good price.

    Gionee S5.5 26

    Build, Design and Hardware

The build quality on the new Elife S5.5 is superb, a perfect mix of Gorilla Glass laden exteriors mixed with a structure based on a hardened aluminum alloy. The buttons are also made from metal, and have a premium and tactile feel. At first it seems that the bezel is flush with the glass but is actually slightly, almost not noticeably, raised, giving the S5.5’s glass design some protection from flat drops.

The frame itself has been designed to release shock and therefore drops should not easily shatter the glass. The phone can take quite some damage and almost show no signs of wear and tear, the frame is metal so expect it to scratch easy.

    Gionee S5.5 7

Design wise the S5.5 is very very good looking, especially in the Gold and White variant. The company has ensured that everyone gets a version they like and the colors should help in that. The phone has a very premium design and the finish on the handset is very rich.

    Gionee S5.5 11
Hardware wise the Gionee Elife S5.5 somehow seems to find a good balance. A Mediatek 6592 chipset with 8 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz a Mali450 MP4 variant GPU, 2 GB of RAM and 16/32 GB storage capacities. The main camera sensor is 13 MP and the front camera sensor is 5 MP both with 1080p capture.  Battery is on the low side with just 2300 mAh under the hood, however with the slimness of this device in consideration, its a pretty high value.

    UI, Performance and Gaming

The Elife S5.5 comes with Android 4.2.2 out the box with no official word on updates to Android 4.4 aka KitKat. However the highlight of this is the new Amigo 2.0 UI which has been put right on top of Android. Now, unlike skins, it is a rebuild of Android, similar to the likes of Cyanogen and MIUI. The newer Amigo is much faster and more responsive than previous builds. The improvement also translates into installed applications, which include “power booster and performance booster” the two of the most significantly useful preloaded apps till date. The performance booster allows you to ban apps that forcefully startup on powering the handset, therefore considerably improving the free ram and performance of the phone.

The handset is stable and powerful enough to handle daily tasks and also the extremities you might want to expose it to. Heat management is also much more controlled than the competition, possibly because of the lack of a turbo variant of the MT6592 chipset.

Gaming is impressive and lag free in most cases, most games are compatible out of the box and run smooth. Audio could have been louder and we have expressed this in the past. The screen is beautiful and the dimples on top and bottom somehow not only make it look good but also provide adequate grip for holding the device in landscape.

    Dimple for grip?
    Dimple for grip?

    Camera

The big disappointment is that there is no 4k video capture, especially when most companies are moving forward with the same trend. The chipset is very capable, the module of the camera is very capable, the hardware is very capable, the only problem seems to be extra large video files, and the lack of SD card slot may be the biggest reason to blame for the lack of 4K capture.

For the camera, the colors and saturation is near perfect, with no problems with exposure or white balance. Images are crisp and autofocus works really well, even up close. Video is also good with no lag in video capture, it is also worth stressing that the onboard microphone for video is exceptionally good.

The front camera is equally good with 5 MP on the badge, pictures are clear and it works well in low light conditions. If you are a selfie fiend, then this might just be right up your alley.

    Phone and Battery

The Gionee Elife S5.5 comes with a globally unlocked 3G capability, so this single sim device will come in handy for the global traveller. However the lack of 4G is really worth a notice, especially considering we are not far away from launch of said services in India (Or so we are made to believe).

    Gionee S5.5 13

The networks are solid and the phone holds its connections mostly throughout the range of the conversation. The inbuilt noise cancellation is good but not comparable to the likes of flagships from Apple and Samsung. Audio coming in and going out is crisp, loud and clear and honestly we really have nothing to complain about in the phone department and thats saying a lot.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 20

Battery life is the most we could expect from this handset, and honestly with the kind of hardware inside, and the lack of a bigger battery we were expecting much less. You will still get a days use of the phone even if you talk upto 5 hours on this and then use it some.

    Conclusion

The Gionee Elife S5.5 shows that new players can have great phones, where many Indian counterparts have let us down. Gionee tries to deliver a complete package, a custom UI, a great built device, a good set of hardware along with impressive performance and battery life. All this at a fairly low price when compared to the market value of flagships. However it does let us imagine why things like a microSD card slot are left out, features like 4K video capture and 4G networks are ignored for markets like India. Even if as a higher price option, consumers deserve an option to choose a handset which is more capable. And what about those KitKat updates?, why can we not simply get a handset that runs Android 4.4. out of the box.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 17

The Elife S5.5 impressed us,  now if the company can roll out a KitKat update consider us sold. The color options, the impressive build quality, and great hardware are just the beginning, the UI is good and so is the overall experience. There are other options in the market, the Moto X delivers faster updates handsets from Samsung and Sony also now belong in this category. Honestly the Elife S5.5 deserves a chance because it sort of sits above the rest, sort of!

    Gionee S5.5 25

  • Hands On: Gionee ELife S5.5 Slimmest phone in the World

Hands On: Gionee ELife S5.5 Slimmest phone in the World

The Slimmest Phone in the world moniker goes to the Gionee E Life S5.5, but it does impress us in other domains as well.

Gionee held a mega event in India and launched the slimmest phone in the world. The company launched a smartphone that is only 5.5 mm thick or should we say 5.5 mm thin. The Gionee Elife S 5.5 was globally launched at MWC 2014 where the company showed off a pre build version of the device. The final version meant for India will be available for purchase starting April 27th for a price of Rs 22900 .

    First Impressions

The Elife S 5.5 does not only seem to aim to be the slimmest phone by any means necessary, it actually impresses in many other domains. The handset is superbly well built with a great mix of metal and glass, with the later taking care of the front and back of the handset.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 17
5.5 mm is about as slim as we can take
Honestly 5.5 mm is about as slim as we can take, any slimmer and a smartphone will become uncomfortable. The ELife S 5.5 despite its metal and glass appearance manages to not be very sharp at the edges. The S 5.5 has rounded off edges at the back to give it a more tapered design making it more easily handle able and pocketable.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 14

Hardware on the Elife S5.5 is on the up side as well, with a true octacore Mediatek chipset clocked sat 1.7 GHz, no its not the turbo version seen on the Micromax Canvas Knight, but it is the same chipset sans turbo of course. You also get 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB Storage, with a 13.0MP AF +5.0MP camera combination both with wide angle lenses and 1080 p video capture.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 1

Gionee has come leaps and bounds in terms of the user interface, the new Amigo 2.0 is not only faster and more responsive it also looks a lot better and has interesting elements which were earlier missing from the UI. The new themes and colors option along with smoother transitions and good looking animations make the S 5.5 slim smartphone look and behave the part of being a smooth operator (pun intended)

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 4

The battery life also seems to have come really far on the new S 5.5 with the handset doing much more with less drainage. One thing the unit lacks is LTE capability, however our country mostly lacks that too so can’t really complain.

    Gionee Elife S 5.5 12

The handset turns out to be a beautiful mix of design, looks and capability for an impressive price, however only extended testing will reveal the true outcome.
Beautiful mix of design, looks and capability for an impressive price
