  • Google Pixel 2 May Dump The 3.5MM Headphone Jack

Google Pixel 2 May Dump The 3.5MM Headphone Jack

Every smartphone is preceded by numerous leaks and renders that keep the potential owners guessing. More often than not the leaks turn out to be a thing of passing. New rendered images of the 2nd gen Google Pixel suggest that the smartphone might ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack for a single USB-C port.

It’s no joke that every phone that launches with a headphone jack these days is met with extra adulation since the Apple iPhone 7 and 7 plus ditched it for a “jack-less, wireless future.” To see reports of Google Pixel 2 ditching the headphone jack is quite surprising considering their famous jab at Apple when the Pixel and Pixel XL were launched with the adored headphone jack.

It is worth mentioning that these are rendered images and nothing is set in stone. Pixel and Pixel 2 have been under the radar for a while especially since the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ stormed on to the scene and grabbed all the attention. With the dust now settling in after the S8 and S8+’s launch, the attention is back on Google’s 2nd gen smartphones and its fair to say that this won’t be the last leak for the phones.

The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel Xl 2 are expected to run on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Google will launch the phone with Android O and improved cameras and bigger battery life.

  • Google Resurrects Google Glass

    Google Resurrects Google Glass

The original Google Glass was designed to log everyday life events, answer random search queries etc. The Glass designers expected people to live their lives in tandem with a wraparound frame and a tiny computer screen hovering over their eye. The glory of the consumer version of Google Glass was expected to take the streets by storm. But this glory was short lived as the initial users faced many problems with the Glass, delivering less than it promised and was further criticised for privacy violation. After three years of efforts to keep the product afloat, Google’s parent company, Alphabet and its sister company, the “moonshot factory” decided to shut down the operation. Later, few reports surfaced indicating that Alphabet had a small team working on a new version of Google Glass – Glass 2.0, for workplace. Google launched the Google Glass Enterprise Edition, officially resurecting the wearable as a workplace tool.

Workers will wear the headset to get hands-free guidance on tasks while keeping their eyes on their work. As to how the wearable works, the Glass 2.0 is not very different from its earlier prototype. The Glass places the information or messages in the wearer’s field of view. Built to support both regular frames and safety glasses, workers can activate their company specific softwares with command “OK, Glass, proceed.” The new Enterprise Edition Glass can be connected with other devices and has more processing power, extended battery life, faster Wi-Fi and a superior 8MP camera(an upgrade from earlier 5MP model). The major difference between the original Glass and the enterprise version is the new red LED light that turns on when recording video(Google’s way of addressing privacy concerns) and a detachable ” Glass Pod ” that can be reattached to Glass-compatible frames, which can also include things like safety goggles and prescription glasses.

Now that the Glass 2.0 has been officially introduced as a workwear tool, Boeing, GE, DHL, and Volkswagen have started testing the headset in hopes of expanding their pilot programs into full-fledged adoption. The glass has also been reported to increase the efficiency of mechanics by 8-12%, with the help of  custom software designed by Upskill.

A pilot project with doctors has also led to some interesting help tools art their disposal.Using Glass with Augmedix, doctors at Sutter Health estimate that they have reduced the amount of time they spend on electronic health record keeping.

Glass has brought the joys of medicine back to my doctors. – Dr. Albert Chan, Sutter Health

Though off to a strong start, the company is facing competion with already existing smart-glasses upstarts like Vuzix, ODG, and Epson. While its still too early to speculate the success of Alphabet’s workplace-focused Google Glass Enterprise Edition, it is sill enough to offer the Google Glass a second shot in the smart-glass world.

  • HTC Reported to Launch Two Nexus Phones This Year

HTC Reported to Launch Two Nexus Phones This Year

In latest news from the land of leaks and rumours, fresh reports suggest not just one, but two Nexus handsets from HTC this year. This revelation comes courtesy of a post on Weibo. The rumour is that there will be two Nexus smartphones just like last year, but unlike 2015, this time we will see the burden of both these being handled by HTC.

    htc-nexus

The rumour also claims that these smartphones will come in two display sizes 5-inch and a 5.5-inch. The decision to bring HTC back for both these phones means they could be similar to the Nexus 5X, fueling rumours of similar looking phones for the Nexus lineup this year. Much like what Apple does with its iPhones, and Plus range.

Considering that HTC is going through a bit of rough patch, if it indeed is true, this partnership will be great news for the Taiwanese company, though it is still unclear as to why this decision did not go Huawei’s way after its stellar work with the 6P.

  • Nexus 6P Users Complain of Poor Microphone Quality During Calls

Nexus 6P Users Complain of Poor Microphone Quality During Calls

Seems like Apple is not the only company with its fair share of problems. Google makes sure its tech competitor never feels left out, even when it comes to running into controversies with their latest gadgets.

JerryRigEverything.com put the Nexus 6P through a series of tests few weeks ago. These tests included heat test and checking the bending capabilities of the phone. Even though the phone is otherwise a sturdy device, it has a hardware flaw which meant -the phone snapped into two when it was tested for bending.Huawei Nexus 6P 25

However, twisting your phone at unnatural angles is not something most users are likely to do. So this whole ‘bend-gate’ issue a second time over with a flagship could be simply overlooked, right? And all was well in the Nexus 6P paradise one more time…until new issues emerged.

Users are now complaining of poor sound quality during phone calls. The person on the other side is unable to hear them properly. Other than standard phone calls, this is also happening during VoIP calls, like Hangouts.

The poor microphone quality has been experienced by users in both the speaker as well as the ear-piece mode. People have taken to Google forums and reddit to talk about it. Google is currently looking into the problem.

If you have used a Nexus 6P, did you face the same, or any other problem, as well? Let us know in the comments below.

  • Why a Chrome and Android Merger Could Spell Disaster for Google

Why a Chrome and Android Merger Could Spell Disaster for Google

In a merger that could probably spell disaster for Google, the company is planning to fold its Chrome OS into its Android OS. Why is this a bad thing? Well, the Chromebook with Chrome OS was introduced as a lightweight operating system with limited native apps for low-powered netbooks. It was meant for students who would do most of their networking through the browser.

With this merger, Google has basically stated that the Chromebook is opening the gates for a horde of Android apps. This will not only leave the Chromebook more cluttered, but could also invite potential security concerns.

    Samsung Chromebook
    Samsung Chromebook

The news is not unexpected, though. Plans for a Chrome and Android merger have been on the cards since 2013. In the past few years, Google has been getting Android apps to run on Chrome, and back in 2009, Google co-founder Sergey Brin himself said that Chrome OS and Android would “likely converge over time”.

The end result of this merger will be an all encompassing OS for both mobile devices and notebooks. Again, net security is the primary concern for people after this merger news. While Chrome OS has been relatively malware-free due to its minimalism, Android apps have been riddles with vulnerabilities. As expected, users took to Twitter to express their disappointment at Google’s latest move.

  • Google Answers Questions Regarding the Nexus Devices on Reddit

Google Answers Questions Regarding the Nexus Devices on Reddit

Just a couple of days ago, Google officially launched the Nexus 5X and the Nexus 6P devices. The initial response to the devices have been mixed, to say the least. There have been some strong criticism directed towards the Nexus 5X, in particular. Google has come out with a few answers to questions posed by Redditors.

Some of the main issues revolved around the lack of a Qi wireless charging support (a first since the Nexus 4) and a limited 2 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage as the baseline. Google answered the former by stating that they felt the USB Type-C charge was good enough and a wireless charge seemed unnecessary, and would have also added to the thickness of the device. “With this year’s Nexii, we support USB Type-C which has a reversible connector so there’s no more guessing. AND it charges incredibly swiftly: 1% to 100% in 97 mins on the 6P for example (the first ~45 mins of charging is especially fast). Meanwhile, wireless charging adds z (thickness),” the Nexus team said in an AMA on Reddit.

As for the latter question regarding the 2 GB RAM and 16 GB storage, which was offered two years ago with the Nexus range, the company stated that what they wanted to offer with the Nexus 5X is good value for money.  “We like to think we’re striking a strong balance between premium features/experiences and affordability,” said Krishna Kumar, the product manager Google put in charge of the Nexus 5X team.

The team also answered a frequently asked question on the site as to whether the cameras on the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P were identical. Kumar replied saying yes.

Both devices have the same camera – a 12.3MP camera, with large 1.55um pixels, which works great in all conditions – especially low light. And both have LDAF for fast auto-focus.” Dave Burke later adds, “[they have the] same sensor (IMX377) and F/2.0 optics. But 6P has more CPU/GPU horsepower so has a few additional features like 240fps slomo (vs 120fps on 5X), Smartburst, and EIS.”

And finally, regarding the naming of the devices as X and P, the Nexus team stated, “X for the core of the Nexus brand (plus it sounds cool!), P for premium.”

  • Top 5 Android Marshmallow Features

    Top 5 Android Marshmallow Features

Last night, at the Google I/O Conference, we got a first look at the next big Android update. Google detailed the new features that are going to be made available with Android Marshmallow.

We’ve already spoken about all the major announcements, we’re now bringing the spotlight to Android M. Are you wondering what sets it apart from Lollipop? Check out the list below.

    Clearer Security Permissions

When you launch a newly downloaded app, do the permissions you’re ‘Accepting’ ever worry you? To make things simpler for users, Google has removed that step and instead you’re now going to be asked for a permission, when you choose to use a particular feature within an app. For example, if you’re using WhatsApp and you would like to send a picture directly from the chat box, a pop-up will appear requesting WhatsApp to access your camera.

So how this essentially helps you is that instead of hurriedly accepting the permissions on downloading an app, this way, you know exactly the functions a particular app has access to. This change is very similar to the way iOS handles their app permissions.

    Now on Tap

The company has taken Google Now one step further with ‘Now on Tap’. This feature is not just available with a single tap of a button, it can now be launched while you’re viewing a particular webpage or an app. For example, if you’re viewing a friend’s Facebook profile, you can use Now on Tap to find out more details about the person. It may then link you to the person’s Twitter and Instagram profile.

Another quick example, if you’re discussing a restaurant with a friend via chat, Now on Tap can give you details about the eatery. All in all, it can be launched to give context to anything you’re doing – without having to leave an app.

     android m 5

    ‘Doze’ to Save your Battery

With the new feature ‘Doze’, Android gives your phone the ability to detect if the smartphone has been left unattended for a while. In which case, M will reduce the background activity, giving the phone longer battery life.

    Android Pay

At the conference Google also announced Android Pay. Like every other mobile payment system, it will enable Android users to simply and securely use their Android phones to pay in stores or for Android Pay partner apps. Google has taken this one step ahead, it has added useful fingerprint support which allows users to confirm a purchase with their fingerprint. The newly-added fingerprint support can also be used to unlock devices. The company promises  that it works consistently across a range of devices and sensors.

This is only the first look at the latest version of Android. At the conference, Google stressed upon the fact that the company will continue to work on developing it further. Android M is expected to release later this year.

    Easier to “Cut, Copy, Paste”

Google understands the number of time we need to copy and paste text from one tab to another. Hence it is going to be making our life easier by bringing the options right above the text we want to cut, instead of at the top of the screen. It may not seem like a major change, but it’s small features like these that combine to make our phone usage quick.

  • Customer Match by Google Will Target Ads Using Your Email Address

Customer Match by Google Will Target Ads Using Your Email Address

Google is letting advertisers in on your email address so that they can get you exactly what you’re looking for. And yes, this is a new feature by Google. The company is rolling out a new tool called Customer Match, which allows advertisers to use a list of email addresses to target specific users across Google. So now you can be tracked online by your Gmail address.

When you buy a smartphone, for example, from an online retailer and provide your email address, the retailer will feed your email id along with your recent purchase to the Google server. So the next time you’re surfing the net while logged in to your Gmail account, Google will be able to send you a whole bunch of ads related to you recent smartphone purchases such as phone covers, earphones, and other accessories.

“Let’s say you’re a travel brand. You can now reach people who have joined your rewards program as they plan their next trip. For example, when these rewards members search for “non-stop flights to new york, on Google.com, you can show relevant ads at the top of their search results on any device right when they’re looking to fly to New York. And when those members are watching their favorite videos on YouTube or catching up on Gmail, you can show ads that inspire them to plan their next trip.” Sridhar Ramaswamy, Google’s ads and commerce veep explained in a blog.

Google is perhaps trying to catch up with Facebook and Twitter who also use your respective email addresses to provide targeted ads within their site. Google calls Customer Match a “privacy-safe” product, but it is still a matter of concern for users who feel that advertisers are getting even more specific with their ad targeting, which calls into question just how much ‘they’ know about you. .

Google, however, has stated that companies will not be able to create personalized profiles of individuals and the tool mainly allows them to compile a list of the user’s habits on YouTube, Google search, and other Google related services. Customer Match will be available to advertise in the coming weeks and you can soon expect to see more specific advertisements pop up in your Gmail account, YouTube, and Google search.

  • Leak Confirms Huawei Nexus 6P Will Be the First All-Metal Nexus Flagship

Leak Confirms Huawei Nexus 6P Will Be the First All-Metal Nexus Flagship

With only a day to go before the reveal of Google’s Nexus smartphones, the leaks continue. We just did a roundup of everything we know of the Google event so far with some rumored specs for each of the flagship phones. Now we have more to tell. Imgur recently leaked images of a Nexus 6P presentation which basically confirms everything we know and a little bit more.

    Nexus 6P

The slides discuss everything from design to specs, and one of the specs that caught our eyes in particular is the massive battery that’s fit into the Nexus 6P. The smartphone will come with a 3450mAh battery that should last you a pretty long time. Clearly, Google has been focusing on battery life this time around. For a little perspective we would also like to point out that the other recent phablets such as the Samsung Note 5 and the iPhone 6s Plus come with a battery of 3,000mAh and 2,750mAh, respectively. Other slides focus on camera, features of Android Marshmallow, and fingerprint sensor.

    Nexus 6P (1)

Other features that are revealed show that the phone will feature a rear-mounted fingerprint reader, a 2560 x 1440 display, a Snapdragon 810 processor, and USB-C. The phone has an all metal body and a large 5.7-inch screen. As earlier reported, the phone will come in four colours – black, white, silver, and gold.

The launch of the Nexus smartphones will take place on the 29th of September in San Francisco.

  • Design Details About LG’s Nexus 5X Revealed

Design Details About LG’s Nexus 5X Revealed

Leaks ruin the element of surprise. With leaks you get to know mostly everything about a device that is yet to be launched. We have been bringing you rumours of the upcoming Nexus smartphones for a while now with the last one being the design of Huawei’s Nexus 6P. So, continuing with the trend, we now have images released by Android Police that reveal the design of LG’s Nexus 5X.

    Nexus 5X

LG’s smartphone looks a lot more appealing than Huawei’s. While the Nexus 6P appears to have a big black bar casing for the camera, the smaller 5X has gone with a simpler look for the back with a fingerprint scanner just below the rounded camera bump. The camera and fingerprint scanner appear to be of the same size which provides a nice balance. The front of the Nexus 5X looks similar to the 6P phablet with two grilles on the front for speakers.

    Nexus 5X (1)

The 5X is expected to have a 5.2-inch 1080p screen with 423 ppi pixel density and a 1.8GHz Quallcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, with 2 GB of RAM. According to the Amazon listing the smartphone will also come with a 12.3MP primary camera and a 5MP front-facing camera and is expected to be priced at Rs. 23,940. Amazon also revealed that the smartphone will be available in three colour variants – Charcoal Black, Quartz White and Ice Blue.

With the Google event less than a week away, we pretty much have everything we need to know about both the Nexus smartphones. Now we just have to wait for the official release of the devices on the 29th of September in San Francisco.

  • This is the Best Look We’ve Got So Far at Huawei’s Nexus 6P

This is the Best Look We’ve Got So Far at Huawei’s Nexus 6P

Just yesterday, we brought you news of leaked images confirming the names of the new Nexus devices as shown on the retail boxes. As we approach the big Google launch on the 29th of September, the leaks are pouring out profusely. We had also mentioned that the only leak perhaps remaining is the actual look of the phones, and well, that’s exactly what the latest leak by Android Police has revealed.

Two leaked press renders of the Huawei Nexus 6P show what the phone will look like. While the first image shows the white version’s front and back, the second shows four colours the phone is expected to be available in – silver, black, white, and gold. The rendered images pretty much confirm what we’ve seen in the past leaks.

    Huawei Nexus 6P

The design shows the front-facing stereo speakers with the fingerprint scanner on the back. Not much can be said on the thickness of the phone, though there is a pretty clear hump housing the camera on the top. Google and Huawei have decided to keep a whole bar rather than just having the camera module sticking out. The black bar is a bit odd-looking, but the image seems to suggest that the bar is on the same level as the rest of the casing. However, without a 3D image we cannot be certain.

    Nexus 6P

Huawei Nexus 6P is expected to feature a 5.7-inch QHD touchscreen, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 chipset, with 3 GB RAM, and will be available in 32 GB/ 64 GB /128 GB internal storage, and a USB Type-C port. The phone will run on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

We are only a few days away from the Google event and the only thing left now are leaked images of the LG Nexus 5X, which can also be expected very soon.

  • Leaked Images Confirm Names Of Nexus Devices

Leaked Images Confirm Names Of Nexus Devices

Just a few days ago, we had reported leaks that suggested the names of the two Nexus smartphones that will be launched on September 29 at the Google event – the Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. Now, some leaked images of the retail boxes confirm the names for good.

Nexus 5X and 6P Reatail Box

As you can see, the images of the retail box obtained by Android Police sport a large X for the Nexus 5X and a large P for the Nexus 6P, with what could be the Android stock wallpaper within. You can also see the Nexus logo on the bottom right while the upper left side reveals the model’s name, storage, and a silhouette of the phone.

We know that LG is responsible for the 5X and Huawei is behind the 6P. A lot has already been leaked on the specs of the phones such as  a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core chipset, with 3 GB of RAM, a 5.7-inch display; a 12-megapixel rear camera and an 8-megapixel front for the Huawei 6P.

The LG Nexus 5X, on the other hand will feature a Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor, Adreno 418 GPU with 3 GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) display; a 12.3-megapixel rear camera and a 5-megapixel front, with a 2700mAh battery.

Rumours also suggest that the Huawei Nexus 6P will come in a 128 GB variant which is a first for a Google developed device. Both the devices will run on the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow out-of-the-box. Also, the devices are said to sport fingerprint sensors and USB Type-C ports as well.

We’re a little less than a week away from the launch of the Nexus smartphones and we have pretty much everything we need to know about the devices in terms of specs and now the names, if the leaks are all true. The only thing that remains is the look of the phones, and don’t be surprised if leaked images of the device emerge just before the event. Follow this space for more on the Google launch.
