  • Do We Really Need Smart Watches?

Do We Really Need Smart Watches?

Humanity has always evolved and changed with technology. Since prehistoric times, humanity has taken major leaps every time they have learnt or mastered a new technology. Even though fire is not a technology, controlling fire is. Learning how to make and use tools and weapons is also a technological advancement. Just as Video has killed the radio star, we now have smart watches that are replacing normal Quartz and Mechanical movement watches. But the real question is do we really need it? In this article we debate on whether smart watches have any real use, as an individual technology, or partnered with the phone, that advances technology as a whole. But before we get into all of that, let’s first know what smart watches are and their history.

    What Are Smart watches ?

Smart watches are wearable computing devices that can also be used to tell time, apart from a host of other features. They connect to your phone, or work independently and connect with the help of eSIM cards. Early models of smart watches could perform basic functions such as basic. math calculations, telling time digitally and even playing games.

    Concise History Of Smart watches

Casio’s calculator watches were legendary and were used widely by many in the 90s. As technology advanced, computers became smaller and smaller, chips and processors became smaller and phones have become smarter. Nowadays, phones and tablets can perform at par or in some cases even outperform computers. Watches took a little longer to change though. In the early years, Seiko who were credited to making the first Quartz Watch – the Seiko Astron, also were one of the forerunners in smart watch technology. Seiko RC series, Timex’s Datalink, Sony Ericsson and Fossil’s MBW-100 were all notable milestones in the journey of smart watches that we have today.

But these watches were either underpowered or did very little in terms of usefulness. Pebble was also one of the brands that took the smart watch industry further. But many consider Motorola to be the first company to make a quantum leap into the future by introducing the Moto 360, an Android Wear based watch, that finally looked and felt like a wrist watch. With it’s round form factor and removable straps and day long battery, it had a balance of functionality and style, but it still wasn’t enough to be called a breakthrough. Then Apple came along and stole the show and the smart watch industry hasn’t looked back since.

What Category Does A Smart watch Fall Into?

Smart watches have lived a very difficult life. It is neither a watch, not a computer. It is neither dependent completely on phones, neither is it completely independent. This has been a topic for debate for a very long time. Smart watches nowadays can best be described as computers that one can wear, that also tell time.

    Form Or Function?

We have always known watches to be circular in shape, well mostly at least, but a circular form factor restricts the usability of a smart watch. So many manufacturers go the rectangular way. From Zenwatches to the Apple Watch everyone has a form factor that is anything but traditional. These rectangular form factors restrict people with smaller wrists from wearing these smart watches. Most rectangular watches are noticeably smaller or thinner. For example many watches in the Titan Edge collection or even the most expensive ones such as Patek Philippe Gondolo or the legendary Richard Mille RM17 Extra Flat Tourbillon. But as technology improves, these watches are also getting thinner with lesser bezels.

They have become much more functional even though not a work of art as many Bauhaus inspired watches or most of the Tourbillon watches are. These are, as many horologists joke, timeless pieces of art. But since the inception of smart watches, their gaudy and eccentric looks have changed a lot. A CEO of a company can now look great in an Apple watch without having to worry about having a strange looking device on his or her wrists.

Functionally, however, these watches do a lot more than just tell time. A modern smart watch can make and receive phone calls, send texts, track your fitness, check your pulse, record your ECG and a lot more. But the question is when and why do we use it. Specially when most of these functions can be achieved by the smartphone in your pocket? Well, there are times when having a smart watch can be extremely useful. Features such as checking your heart rate and recording your ECG can be the difference between life and death.

While driving a car and stopping at a signal, one can quickly turn their wrist, check their notification and reply without having to take out their smartphone every time. Some smart watches also come with an eSIM feature. This allows the watch to work independently, without requiring a connection to the phone. These allow you to still see and reply to notifications even if you forget your smartphone at home. Sometimes, in meetings, taking out your smartphone to check an important text or notification can seem rude. This is also true for Movie theatres and hospitals and that is where smart watches might be ‘handy’.

So Do We Really Need Smart watches?

In order to answer the question “So Do We Really Need Smart watches?”, one needs to emphasize on the ‘We’ more than the ‘Need’. Whether or not you need a smart watch depends on who you are. It depends on how you use your smart watch or even your smartphone daily needs to be reviewed. If you are a busy person who needs to be constantly alerted regarding your notifications or if you are driving long distances on a daily basis a smart watch might be great for you!

If you have had frequent health problems that need to be monitored or are a fitness fanatic, if you forget your phone at home often and a lot more can define your need for such a device. Some may use it as a watch more than a computer and use it occasionally. On the other hand some may use the other features more than the watch itself.

Even if you feel that you do not need a smart watch at the moment, it is great to learn how to use and operate it. Smart watches are here to stay and they are improving drastically every year. If not today, you might need a smart watch later on in the process. If you are not that tech savvy then you may have to learn a lot about it in order to catch up to this emerging technology. It is best to go to a store, try out a smart watch and then decide. But if you are a light smartphone user or a student, it would be wise to avoid smart watches as they will just stay as a timepiece in your drawer if they aren’t used to their full potential.

Diwali Gift Guide : Smartwatches You Can Buy in India Right Now

Technology has always strived to make lives easier by the year. So much so that it requires you to not move an inch and still get work done. As a result, people are becoming lazier by the day. The only trade-off is that you look cooler. So, there’s that. We have come a long way from landlines, to cordless, to mobile phones, and now smartphones.

You know technology has progressed by how things become smaller and lighter. So your gigantic box of a PC has evolved into a laptop. Your laptop then transformed into a tablet. But it’s really not cool enough until you’re able to wear your tech. So now the world is seeing a move towards wearable technology. Enter the smartwatch.

Granted that smartwatches aren’t new. They’ve been around since the 90s if you think about it. The idea today is to have a watch that is more than something that tells you the time. Smartwatches not only work like a phone, but they also come with fitness features that look to get you into shape. They are here to counter what other techs have turned you into.

The Apple Watch is coming to India in November and the Samsung Gear S2 is likely to follow soon. So if you’re in the mood to get into the wearable tech trend, we have some suggestions for smartwatches currently popular in the Indian market.

    Sony Smartwatch 3

Sony’s smartwatches so far have been consistent with design. The Smartwatch 2 came out in 2013 and was popular because it worked with all Android 4.0 devices at the time, whereas Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch worked only with Samsung own Galaxy devices.

    SmartWatch-3

The Sony Smartwatch 3 was unveiled at IFA 2014 and comes with a 1.2GHz Quad-core ARM Cortex A7 processor, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB eMMC. One of the main talking points about the Smartwatch 3 is that it comes with built-in GPS connectivity. The sports styling makes it perfect for daily wear. The square design is similar to the Apple Watch and is not too big for your wrists.

The display is a little dull compared to its competitors, but you do get to wirelessly connect it to a headphone for music on the go. You’ll also get a day of battery life, though Sony promises two days. The Android Wear Smartwatch 3 is available on Amazon and Snapdeal for Rs. 15,900 and Rs. 14,585, respectively.

    Samsung Gear Live

Samsung Gear Live is an Android Wear smartwatch that came out last year. The Gear Live is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core CPU with 512 MB RAM and 4 GB storage. The smartwatch has a sleek metal design that makes it one of the more attractive looking devices in the market. And unlike Samsung’s previous smartwatches like the Gear 2, this one works with all Android devices.

You also get features like heart rate monitor, and a 320×320 AMOLED display, which looks crisp and bright indoors. However, there are some cons to the device as well. The charger is hard to use and while Samsung Gear Live has a great display when viewed indoors, the outdoor visibility in the Gear Live is surprisingly quite poor.

Samsung’s Gear Live is priced at Rs. 10,000, which is decent for the features that it provides. You can find the watch on Flipkart.

    Moto 360

The Moto 360 was one of the most anticipated devices of 2014. The 360 is for the circular frame of the watch, though it doesn’t quite give you a complete 360-degree viewing due to a small bar at the bottom of the screen.

The Base model will arrive first and will be followed by a steel strap variant.

The watch is made of metal and is dust and water resistant. The size of the watch is something that has seen polarizing responses. While some feel that the watch is too big for the wrists, other who are used to G-Shock-like watches are satisfied with the 360.

The 360 has a 1.5-inch display with Gorilla Glass 3 and 320×290 resolution, which is not exactly the best in the business. It is an Android Wear 1.0 watch and runs on 1 GHz Cortex A8 processor with 512 MB RAM and 4GB storage. The 360 is a great device, and one one of the better smartwatches to go for if you’re willing to shell out Rs. 14,000. The device gives you everything you need from a smartwatch and the traditional circular design looks great. You can find the Moto 360 on Flipkart.

    [tw-button size=”medium” background=”#07ABE2″ color=”” target=”_blank” link=”http://www.flipkart.com/motorola-moto-360-smartwatch/p/itmdzrf56agybrvt?pid=SMWDZRF4FGYP9KXE&ref=L%3A-7023244988881157195&srno=p_1&query=moto+360&otracker=from-searchhttp://www.flipkart.com/samsung-gear-live-smartwatch/p/itme9gy5n7v38cav?pid=SMWE9GY5TDQGSAPG&ref=L%3A-3629855610127366391&srno=p_1&query=Samsung+Gear+s&otracker=from-search&affid=bhnagpalgm”]Buy Now[/tw-button]

    Alcatel One Touch

The Alcatel One Touch looks like a poor man’s Moto 360. The circular display, steel casing and flat bottom gives you a Moto 360 feel. The Alcatel, however, is one of the smallest circular smartwatches out there. At 1.2-inches, the watch is very petiit and this may put off some consumers.

Here’s the thing about smartwatches. Big displays can be just as annoying as tiny ones. The problem many brands face is to bring that perfect size to the smartwatch while having all the features and toys intact. Because of its size, the Alcatel loses out on many features, and this in turn brings the price down as well, which makes the watch quite affordable.

The Alcatel One Touch goes for simplicty. This is why the watch runs on the company’s own OS rather than Android Wear. You can work the watch from your iOS or Android device and the companion app is just as simple. You’ll figure out how to work with the watch in less than five minutes. The small watch gives a big battery life that can run for a good 2-3 days based on usage, which is more than any other in this list. The One Touch is priced at Rs. 7,999 on Flipkart.

Everything You Need to Know About the New Moto 360 (2015)

So Motorola has released a new Moto 360 smart watch at the IFA Berlin event this year. Here’s us breaking it down for you and comparing it to its predecessor, as best as we can.

The Moto 360, when released, was one of the few Android smartwatches with a round display. This smart-wear had its own set of problems, for example – the round display cut out the corners of the content and the battery life seemed short. However, the second problem was fixed soon enough. Overall, the Moto 360 seemed like a ‘nice’ smartwatch, just like any other – it could respond to your voice with voice control, you could send texts just by saying “Ok Google”, you could check the weather, and even ask for directions.

The device could also be used as a health monitor and came with a Pedometer and Optical heart rate monitor (PPG).  It had a display of 1.56-inch LCD with 320 x 290 resolution (205ppi) protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3. It came with an IP67 rated water resistance and a 320 mAh battery which now lasts a lot longer since the update.

Here is our hands-on video, to give you an idea of what the Moto 360 was like, so that you can vividly see the difference in the second generation that we’re about to describe to you:

Now, what we’re really excited to talk about today, is the Moto 360 second-gen version that was just unveiled at the IFA Berlin event. What’s different about it? Well firstly, it’s not just one watch, its an entire ‘collection’ that has been released. This year Motorola has clearly been very influenced by the fashion world and all the latest trends within the design industry. So, it’s come up with two models, three sizes and up to 300 different ways to customize your Moto 360.

LG G Watch R, Moto 360 to Reportedly Face a Price Cut on Google Play Store

It seems smart watches are on a price-slashing spree. A few months back, Motorola’s Moto 360 smartwatch got a price cut of $70 on Amazon and Best Buy. Now, Google Play too is said to be offering the smartwatch at a bargain, bringing down the cost to $180, permanently.

The link to buy the products has currently been taken down, but it should be up shortly.

  • Motorola is Currently Working on a Second Generation Moto 360 : Report

Motorola is Currently Working on a Second Generation Moto 360 : Report

Moto 360 by Motorola was one of the best smartwatches of year 2014. Everyone appreciated it for its simple watch face and round design. Since the time of its launch, rumours started floating about the successor of Moto 360 and today, it another one has popped up.

According to a report by Phandroid, the Schaumburg-based electronics firm is working on a second-generation Moto 360 near its headquarters. The online tech publication claims that the next Moto smartwatch is codenamed as ‘Smelt’ and they have recovered proof of its existence. The source says that it has spotted a device with ‘Smelt’ codename that has been pinging from Mundelein – a city close to Schaumburg – to an anonymous Android developer’s console. The gadget is said to be running on Android 5.1 and sports a screen resolution of 360×360.

The explanation to why ‘Smelt’ could be the next Moto smartwatch is a bit bizarre, but that’s one of the primary grounds of this assumption. The publication says that Smelt defines ‘a small silvery fish that lives in both marine and freshwater’. At the time of Moto 360 testing, the wearable also received a codename of similar fashion – Minnow – which means ‘small freshwater fish’. From the common fish-themed codename, it turns out that the “Smelt” is the upcoming Moto wristwatch.

However, it’s just a presumption and Motorola hasn’t officially stated anything as of now. But this appears to be true in a way since the company has almost had a year to work on its next product.

  • Motorola Launches India’s First Moto Care Centre in Bangalore

Motorola has announced officially that the first Moto Care centre has been set up at Jayanagar Road, Bangalore. This is the first of the many service centre that the company has promised, which will soon be up and running all over the country.

The Experience Zone will cater to the needs of prospective buyers who want to experience products like Moto G, Moto X (2nd Gen), Moto Turbo, Moto E, Moto 360 and other Motorola products at the centre. The Zone can also assist online ordering via Flipkart.

It has been added that the centre will not only facilitate customers directly in Jayanagar, but will also benefit customers from neighbouring locations of Bangalore such as MG Road, Koramangala, Indiranagar and Rajendra Nagar. For its customers elsewhere in India, new reaching out options include the Moto Care app and the helpline number. For its customers in Delhi, Motorola has initiated a pilot project which provides Moto vans for servicing the device within few hours. The Moto van service is valid up to 30 days of the purchase.

Motorola recently launched the new version of its Moto E in India, along with the Moto Turbo, their flagship model. The company has seen a lot of success in the country with the Moto G and Moto E smartphones. This move will only help better the company’s position in the market.

  • Google to Finally Add That One Important Missing Feature on Android Wear Smartwatches

Google to Finally Add That One Important Missing Feature on Android Wear Smartwatches

Google has decided to fill the gap that makes its Android Wear software fall second in the wearables segment. According to a report by The Verge, the search giant is planning to bring Wi-Fi support to Android Wear software running on smartwatches. If the report is to be believed, then the extended support may come with the next software update.

The next update will diminish the fine line between the Apple Watch and Android Wear-powered wearables. Users can turn on Wi-Fi, and the Android Wear-powered smartwatches will get notifications and run Google Now even if the Bluetooth connection is not available. The new update will bring two additional tweaks – gesture control and improved UI.

    NEW_MOTO_360_8

The former tool allows users to swipe notifications and Google Now cards on the screen of the device without using the other hand. Despite, one can flick their wrist to do the same. The redesigned user interface was much needed in the Android-powered wearables. With the help of the tweaked UI, one can have easier access to applications and contacts. It will also get easier to switch between apps.

There are certain devices that come with built-in wireless, but because of this missing feature, the use of Android Wear-based wearables is limited. The new update will give a new dimension to a broad range of smartwatches like the Moto 360, the Asus ZenWatch, and the Samsung Gear Live.

This makes the upgrade of the Android Wear software much more crucial as users may consider switching to Apple Watch. Meanwhile, there is no information on when the company planning to release an update.
