Moto G5S Plus Confirmed For Launch In India On August 29

Motorola India has been teasing the launch of the Moto G5S Plus for the past few days and the company recently tweeted the Moto G5 Plus’ successor will launch in India on 29 August.

Although the the Moto G5S Plus listing has gone live on Amazon India confirming it to be an Amazon exclusive, no information about the launch of Moto G5S in India has been revealed yet.

The Moto G5S Plus will be available in Lunar Grey and Fine Gold colour variants featuring a 5.5 inch 1920 x 1080 px display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The smartphone comes with a unibody metal design and sports a 2.5D curved glass panel on the front. Similar to it’s younger sibling – the Moto G5 Plus, the G5S Plus will be powered by a 3,000 mAh battery with turbo charging capabilities. The power adapter can supposedly provide 6 hours of usage time with 15 minutes of charging.  The device has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 chipset, a 2.0 GHz octa-core CPU coupled with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of onboard storage which is expandable via microSD card up to 128GB.

The Moto G5S Plus’ widely speculated feature, the rear mounted 13MP dual-camera with an f/2.0 aperture and dual tone LED flash, comes with video stabilization and 4K video recording at 30 FPS. The dual camera has features like Bokeh, selective focus shots and exposure management. On the front is an 8MP camera with a wide-angle lens and LED flash along with a new panoramic mode.

The physical home button on the front also doubles up as a fingerprint sensor, much like the previous Moto phones. Additional features such as Night Display and Quick Reply have also been added as part of a more meaningful software experience for the customers, the company claims.

The Moto G5S Plus price hasn’t been confirmed yet but speculations predict that the smartphone will be priced around Rs 17,999.

• Motorola India Teases the Moto X Force with Shatter-Proof Display

Motorola India Teases the Moto X Force with Shatter-Proof Display

Motorola India has just launched a teaser for its upcoming Moto X Force smartphone. The device’s major highlight is its shatter-proof display which is gloriously demoed in this teaser while taking a jibe at some other well known smartphones out there including the iPhone.

The teaser shows people dropping iPhones, Samsung devices and other devices in slow motion, capturing the many different ways in which the displays can shatter. At the end comes the Moto X Force which is dropped and comes out clean, without a single scratch to the display or dent on the sides.

Motorola claims to have integrated a ‘Moto Shattershield’ technology in the display of Moto Force which, it says, is the first shatterproof screen in a phone ever. The company feels confident enough to affirm the screen would stay intact for up to four years, owing to the multiple layers of different materials used in making it capable of absorbing shock and providing protection against cracking. The phone also boasts of two touchscreen layers, which make sure that the smartphone can be used even if one of the layers is cracked.

On the specs front, Moto X Force packs a 5.4 inch Quad HD display with a resolution of 2560×1440 pixels. It is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core chipset along with 3 GB of RAM. The two internal storage options of 32 GB and 64 GB are expandable up to 2 TB with the help of a microSD card.

The Moto X Force is set to launch in India by the end of January. Follow this space for more.

Exclusive : Moto’s Next Phone to Have a Solid Build and an Excellent Camera

In the world of mobile handsets, there are very few companies that manufacture phones which are well-built and at the same time, carry high-end specs. The biggest example of this would be the Apple iPhone. Excellent innards mixed with delicate hardware.

Motorola, on the other hand, has a long history of being a firm which produces viably sturdy handsets while keeping the device technologically updated from the software front. Recently, iGyaan got an official tip from the company that their new phone may be similar to their old Motorola Defy.

Released in January 2011, the Motorola Defy could resists water and dust. Its screen was tough and scratch proof, the construction super rigid and environment proof. The phone, at the time, came with a 3.7-inch display, 5MP camera and 1500mAh battery.

Imagine the aesthetics of the Moto Defy and the specifications of today – that’s what Motorola is planning to bring to the table.

This was supported by leaked images and a video of the upcoming what is could possibly be, the Moto X Third Gen, courtesy a Google+ leaker who goes by the name Neo Lee.

The video has been removed on YouTube, but can be viewed here on Google+. Nothing much could be made out from the video, as it simply showed someone scrolling through and reading the specs of the phone. The rumoured phone is expected to have a Snapdragon 410, a 5-inch screen, 1 GB RAM, 8GB storage + microSD expansion, a slightly better 13MP or 16MP rear camera, a 5MP front camera and LTE radio.

moto-x-3rd-gen

On the other hand, the new images reveal a good amount about the upcoming phone. A photo of the rear panel suggests the new smartphone carries forward Motorola’s design language, which includes the dual LED flash. The device is also operating on the latest version of Android (5.1.1 Lollipop). With the new third generation Moto X, Motorola is possibly working towards testing with glass and metal for its device, giving it a solid premium look.

The Moto X (3rd Gen) might have everything that it takes to be the best all-round device we can get from Motorola. With this, the new Motorola smartphone could stand up against the likes of Samsung and Apple.

• No Moto Maker for India, But You Could Win a Moto X Instead

No Moto Maker for India, But You Could Win a Moto X Instead

A few days back, Motorola posted teaser tweets which several Indian media networks decided were hinting at Moto Maker’s arrival in India.

For those of you who don’t know, Moto Maker is a customization programme, that gives you the option to choose from a variety of back panels and device colours to give it your own personal touch. You can also engrave your initials or a message on the back side of your phone or a customized splash screen.

Instead, Motorola has launched a contest to celebrate the company’s batwing logo turning 60. Motorola has come up with a new promotional campaign, tagged as #MyMotoLogo. The contest is easy to understand. Six people who come up with the most creative Moto Logo will be declared winners and will be entitled to take home a Moto X with them, with their customized logo inscribed on it.

motocontest

To participate in the #MyMotoLogo contest, contestants can recreate Moto batwing logo in the form of a doodle, installation, arrangement, rangoli, graffiti, illustration or graphic design and upload the logo. The entries can be submitted entries via any of the three social networking platforms -Twitter, Facebook and Instagram with #MyMotoLogo tag to Motorola India. (Users can also send the logo to the official dedicated website.) The contest will end on 25th June.  You can click here for more information.

We don’t know if Motorola’s customisation program will be available in India anytime soon. Till then, we suggest you get your creative juices flowing for the #MyMotoLogo contest!

• Motorola is Not Considering an Offline Sales Policy Anytime Soon: Moto India Head

Motorola is Not Considering an Offline Sales Policy Anytime Soon: Moto India Head

At a time when most of the major tech giants are setting up their retail stores, slowly making the move from online to offline, Motorola wants to stick to their present sales model. The telecommunications firm revealed that it has no plans to sell smartphones through physical stores in India and will continue to retail handsets through their exclusive online partner Flipkart.

According to Times of India, the India Business Head of Motorola, Amit Boni spoke about the company’s plans, “It is important that when you take a strategic bet, you stand by it and make it work. That’s what we are doing with the Flipkart partnership. You need to look into other channels of sales only when your present channel is not sound enough.”

Recently, Motorola inaugurated its first bricks-and-mortar store Moto Care in India. It’s a one of a kind store at Jayanagar in Bengaluru where customers can walk-in to check the product portfolio. The store showcases smartphones and accessories and also provides repair services. Boni further elaborated his statement, “We believe that there’s a certain set of customers who wants to see the device before buying it. We are making sure that we are opening up to them too.” The Chicago-based firm plans to open more such stores across the country in the coming days.

It has also been learnt that Motorola is planning to expand its 4G portfolio of devices. The company is expected to launch a 4G version of Moto E in India.  Recently, the firm came up with few new releases. The first in the list is the Moto Turbo, followed by Moto Selfie Stick, which the company showed off on April Fool’s day. The company claimed that the stick is a $140 handcrafted accessory to click self portraits and is compatible with Moto X. We almost fell for that one.

#LetsTalkShop with Amit Boni from Motorola India

When Motorola departed India in haste, shutting down operations and basically calling it quits, a large chunk of Moto believers were left disheartened. Motorola was always perceived as a quality brand, the real inventor of the mobile phone and an innovation driver.

With Motorola’s global operations in trouble the company took a breather to rework strategies and work towards exciting products says Amit Boni, who now heads Motorola Mobility India’s reenergized operations.

In a very candid and exciting conversation with the man we learnt that the company has inherited a lot of traits from ex-parent Google and the business strategies going forward seem to be well in order.

Motorola really researched the Indian market before returning with its new lineup, and found the Flipkart model to be a success runner and in a price conscious market like India, a steady pricing system.
We wanted to ensure our customers pay one price for our phones throughout India.
Amit says Motorola is keen to begin the relationship when the buyer purchases a Motorola product and will ensure that service is never an issue for the customer. The company has a strong foothold in India for service and Motorola is keen on expanding the service base.

Xiaomi is not a threat, says Amit, we are happy with competition and going forward are ready to provide a better consumer experience. This sort of competition helps us stay grounded he claims, allowing the company to know where they stand.
Xiaomi’s entry in India using Flipkart is a validation of Motorola’s excellent strategy
Motorola wants to bring products to India as fast as they can, and they are really excited for the Moto 360. The Moto 360 will suffice in a market that has seen some disappointing products, says Amit.

• Top 10 Fails Of The Technology World – 2012!

Top 10 Fails Of The Technology World – 2012!

     fails

When you look at the tech world this year, there have been plenty of innovations, but of course where there are successes, there are certainly going to be failures. Coming up with a list of the top 10 tech fails of 2012 was a bit of a challenge however, not because there weren’t enough, but because there are so many. And most of the entries on this list are debatable to some extent.

1. Aakash Tablet!

fails

In October 2012, Indian politician Kapil Sibal called a press conference. Indian politicians call press conferences all the time, even those with a last name that is not Gandhi. And with two portfolios–he is both India’s minister of human-resource development and its minister of communications and information technology–Sibal typically has a lot he wants to talk about.

But this time he actually had news that would be noticed beyond New Delhi. With a phalanx of reporters and photographers gathered in a government auditorium, Sibal, a Harvard Law grad with a halo of white hair, held up a device he called the Aakash, which is Hindi for “sky.” It looked like an iPad.

The most remarkable Aakash data point was its price: $35. Meant for the millions of students who can’t even afford textbooks, the Aakash is supposed to be India’s iPad knockoff. “There are some moments in history,” Sibal said, taking a long pause, “that will be milestones recognized by future generations. This is one such moment.”

Indians take a certain pride in making things cheaper. The Hindi word to describe this is jugaad, roughly translated as “frugal innovation.” However, the Aakash, never made it to market.

I’ve yet to come across any college student who bought the tablet, either at the subsidized rate or the normal cost. So it tops our list as the biggest fail for 2012!

2. Apple Maps

fails

Along with the rollout of the much anticipated iPhone 5 in September 2012, Apple overhauled iOS, the operating system that runs the phone, its iPad and other mobile devices. A much-hyped feature of the change was Apple’s first effort at its own mapping app — after dumping rival Google’s map software.

The result was so bad that a few days later Apple’s CEO was essentially telling customers to use Google Maps.

Entire cities appeared in the wrong place. Landmarks such as the Washington Monument showed up submerged in bodies of water, and big chunks of the globe appeared as roadless wastelands.

It was a little more than a month later when Scott Forstall, vice president in charge of iOS, was ousted from the company, reportedly, in part, for not wanting to apologize for Maps.

Apple fails are few and far between, but Apple Maps were a definite fail!

3. Motorola India

fails

Motorola Mobility, which is totally independent from Motorola Solutions, had incurred heavy loss last year. Google took over the company for $12.5 billion in May this year. Google had earlier said in a filing to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Motorola Mobility shut down its India-specific product website as part of its global streamlining process.

“We are streamlining our business and support systems, and unfortunately, we’ll no longer have a dedicated website for India,” a message on Motorola Mobility India’s website said.

“Your local support site will remain open well into the future, and we’ll continue to provide support for our existing products,” it added.

This move seems to be a part of the company’s global downsizing process. In August, it had confirmed its decision to cut off 20 percent of work force and shut down operations in many countries.

So after capturing the Indian customer’s imagination with devices like the MotoRazr and the MotoRokr, Motorola finally bid adieu to the country, leaving many disappointed.

4. HTC One X Wi-Fi Issue

fails

HTC did extremely well for themselves with their new line of Smartphones, the One Series. In June, several reports of  WiFi issues on the HTC One X came to light, issues that led to difficulty connecting to Wi-Fi networks and annoying lag when playing games. The issues, which can also negatively affect the handset’s battery life, may have been related to a flaw in manufacturing, was actually confirmed.

Taiwanese manufacturer, HTC, officially confirmed that the device was infact suffering said issues. But having finally come clean on the issue, the Taiwanese Smartphone Giant also claimed to have found its fix, and had changed its production process for the One X to tackle the problem.

It replaced many handsets in the process, earning itself a place in our top 10 fails.

5. Stop Online Piracy Act ( SOPA )

fails

The new law was supposed to be about fighting online piracy. Who’s going to be against that, right?

Answer: Pretty much the whole Internet.

Members of Congress sponsored the Stop Online Piracy Act, or SOPA, and related bills to make it easier to shut down websites that illegally share music, movies and other content.

But opponents argued it went too far and could end up shutting down legitimate sites while stifling free expression in the process.

Unfortunately for backers of SOPA, Web heavyweights such as Google, Facebook, Reddit and Wikipedia joined the fight against the bill. Sites went black on January 18 to raise awareness. Members of communities such as Reddit put intense pressure on lawmakers (including soon-to-be GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan) until they dropped their support or went on record opposing the bill.

The unprecedented backlash eventually caused supporters to shelve SOPA, and quite possibly ushered in a new age of Web activism.

6. Blackberry Outage

fails
This tweet just about sums it up!

It was a case of worst possible timing as BlackBerry maker Research In Motion (RIM) confirmed it had suffered a significant outage across Europe and Asia, just as the iPhone 5 was launching to the now familiar queues in Apple stores around the world.

An October outage at a data center caused users to lose messaging ability in parts of Europe, the Middle East, India, Africa, Latin America and North America. (To their credit, RIM ultimately gave away a pile of free apps to the folks affected).

The outage lasted for several days and was the final straw for some users, who abandoned ship for other phones. Add that to a list of Blackberry fails.

7. Zynga

fails

Zynga was riding high. Love them or hate them, its games like “Mafia Wars” and “FarmVille” were everywhere, clogging up Facebook pages and spurring millions of bored casual gamers to pay real cash for virtual cows. Then, it all came crumbling down.”

OK, maybe “crumbling down” is an overstatement. But things in The ‘Ville definitely didn’t go Zynga’s way in 2012.

In October, Zynga announced it was laying off 5% of its employees, Facebook, which gets a cut when people spend money on games such as “FarmVille,” said that income from Zynga was down 20% over last year.

And yesterday, the company announced that it was closing down 20 of its game titles in order to cut costs. FAIL!

8. Windows 8

fails

Many eyebrows were raised on November 12, 2012 when Microsoft announced that Stephen Sinofsky—the president of the Windows division, a driving force behind Windows 8, and a long-time leader at Microsoft—was leaving his post, effective immediately. The odd timing and abrupt announcement led to a rash of speculation. Was Sinofsky fired or did he quit? Was it planned? Are Windows 8 sales that bad? The answer is yes!

Aside from the app selection, many early criticisms targeted the modern UI itself, which throws everything you know about navigating Windows, well, out the window. Early adopters—especially nontechie types—have reported running into issues with the overhauled interface, which is made worse by Windows 8’s near-complete lack of instructions when you boot it up for the first time.

Microsoft hasn’t been forthcoming with sales numbers, and the company declined to comment when asked by various journalists. That institutional reticence makes it hard to divine just how well Windows 8 is actually selling on the streets.

All that said, sporadic leaks, whispers, and data from third-party channels help us paint a partial picture of Windows 8’s sales success—and what we’ve learned suggests that the OS is stumbling out of the gate.

A fail so far, we’re afraid.

9. Facebook IPO

fails

Maybe the dumb money wasn’t so dumb this time.

From the point of view of the company, Facebook itself, of course it was a roaring success. They were able to raise a good chunk of capital to develop and expand the business. That’s what an IPO is, at heart, about. Early investors in the company did well too: they were able to cash out some portion of their earlier investment at good prices. But things went horribly wrong!

If the market were to judge Facebook not a a potential promise but as actual worth today, the stock should be trading around $4.50. It could lose over 85% of its current value (90% from the IPO price, which started at $38) and still have room to fall further. That’s how big a fail the IPO has turned out to be!

10. IPC Sec 66A Of The IT App

fails

The Section 66 (A) of the Indian IT Act continues to haunt the cyber population of India. At a time when a public interest litigation has been filed in the Supreme court questioning the constitutional validity of the section, questions are also being raised about the need for such “draconian” section.

Section 66A of the IT Act criminalises any person who electronically sends any information that is deemed grossly offensive, has a menacing character, which he\she knows to be false but still transmits to cause annoyance, inconvenience, danger, obstruction, insult, injury, criminal intimidation, enmity, hatred, or ill will, persistently by making use of the electronic communication medium. It also includes emails or text messages that have been sent with the deliberate purpose of causing annoyance or inconvenience or to deceive or mislead the recipient. The punishment can be a fine or imprisonment for up to 3 years.

The act has been in the eye of the storm after it caused the arrest two Palghar girls for allegedly posting Facebook comments against a political party. Earlier, the police had used the same law to arrest Aseem Trivedi for allegedly mocking the Indian Constitution through cartoons that had been put up as banners during Anna Hazare’s rally in Mumbai.

It definitely earns its place in the top fails!

Epic Fail

But the biggest fail of 2012 has to be the inability of our nation to respect women. The recent gang-rape and eventual death of the girl, named by the press as “Nirbhaya” (or fearless) is a BIG black dot on  our society. Change is needed, not only in our laws and government, but within ourselves.

So many Big Statements coming in. Where are the big actions?

• impact resistant design
• Accelerometer
• Proximity Sensor
• 800MHz Cortex-A8 processor
• TI OMAP3610 chipset

The device has all the fancy stuff you can get at the price + it has the rugged construction. We still miss HD video.

Camera & Multimedia

The Defy packs a 5 MP shooter which has auto focus, but, lacks tap to focus. Hopefully, an upgrade from motorola can add that feature to the device. I

mages come out sharp from the device and extremely quickly. Video on the other hand is just VGA and could have been HD video at 720p. That would make the camera on the defy, a complete package. The fact that you can shoot images and video underwater is what makes the camera an extremely fun instrument to use. Video at pool parties anyone?

As far as media playback goes, since the device runs Android, it is capable of a vast variety of formats and supported codecs. Everything is available either free or at a premium from the marketplace. The device packs enough power to play all sorts of videos and stream movies from the internet. The loudspeaker on the device is simply “superb” packs a punch has great sound coming from a sealed speaker.

Call Quality and Battery Life

Here at iGyaan we stress on Call quality a lot. Especially since the DEFY is priced slightly higher than other phones, we wanted that the device perform well. We got exceptionally clear sound from the earpiece, even as the device was dipped into water several times it continued to sound clearer than ever. the microphone is also exceptionally good at doing its job. Motorola made sure that the earpeice issue was resolved before launching the device.

We got zero dropped calls in our 4 hours of testing and no signal issues what so ever. The device is just plain a good phone.

Battery life was also pretty impressive we got on an average 5 hours of talk time on the device. About 8-9 hours on media playback, 6 hours of internet browsing and about 20-24hours of music playback. All of this with the WIFI on. The battery is a 1500mah battery, the large capacity plays a huge role in such battery performance.

OPERATING SYSTEM

The Defy runs Android 2.1 with MOTO BLUR- (yes MOTO BLUR works perfectly in INDIA). The performance of the device is great with a few hiccups here and there. The upgrade to ANdroid 2.2 should be rolled out soon, and should remove the lagging in the processor. Since this device has a 800 mhz cortex A8 processor , flash would work perfectly in the browser. We would also definitely love the move to sd card option.

Currently in its state the Moto Blur and customized UI from Motorola add to the experience of the OS. The OS is color-ful and has a lot of unique customizations that make life that much easier while using the DEFY.

Conclusion

An extremely well built phone / device with somewhat all the latest features. It does lack a few things (HD video, Android 2.2) but atleast a software upgrade would bring one of them. Water resistant and dust proof had us from the get go. The device is an absolute must for the outgoing individual, an outdoor person or even a clumsy fellow.

Priced at 18,000/- INR

This device gets a 4.5/5.0 from iGyaan
