When Apple removed all the ports in its new MacBook and replaced them with USB Type-C ports, the world anticipated that we’re moving towards devices with a universal port for everything. However, with different voltage requirements, specifications for data transfer and power, and more make it complicated to ensure that one port will satisfy all needs in any part of the world.
The USB 3.0 Promoter Group, which consists of Apple, HP, Intel, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, and others of its members has announced a new USB Type C specification, the USB 3.2. USB 3.1 or, to be accurate, USB 3.1 Gen 2 Superspeed+ sports up to 10Gbps. This is made possible by combining two individual 5Gbps lanes. USB 3.2 will now double these two lanes to 10Gbps each, resulting in a whopping 20Gbps transfer speed. Assuming the host and recipient devices are compatible with USB 3.2, even older USB 3.0 cables will see faster speeds of up to 2oGbps. So, even if you don’t upgrade all your tech from USB 3.0 to 3.2, you may see an increase in transfer speeds if the manufacturers start to support it.
It is also worth noting that not every USB Type C cable is capable of transferring these 2 lanes of 10Gbps, so even though different USB Type C cables might look the same, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are the same. In order for it to support these new transfer speeds, the cable needs to be Superspeed+ certified.
The USB 3.2 is not expected to be finalised until later this year, which means it’ll probably be a while before we see a standard roll out to devices. The USB Developer Days event is scheduled for September 2017 and a lot of other announcements are anticipated to happen in Vancouver, Canada.
Sony has launched a new portable flash drive that will be compatible for use with both USB-A connectors, along with USB-C ports. This might not come as the biggest news of the day, but for most struggling between older and new generation systems, these USB Type-C drives will be nothing short of godsend coming with a promise to make their lives a lot easier than before.
USM-CA1 according to Sony will feature dual connectors to allow for wider connectivity. These will be available in three sizes, 16GB/32GB/64GB, and will have write speeds of up to 130 Mb/s.
The USM-C1 will be available starting sometime next week. No information on pricing has been revealed. Sony also revealed that these drives will support Windows 7 and abov, OS X 10.8 and higher along with compatibility for Android 5 and above.
Remember those spy movies you would watch as a kid, where the spy would have to get to this super secure vault; which could only be opened by one person, because it was locked by the most advanced technology of all time – fingerprint security system? Child’s play today.
Almost every present day high-end smartphone has a fingerprint scanner. So why not a USB fingerprint scanner which can be attached to your laptop in order to lock all your accounts with your own fingerprint? Let us find out what all the fuss is about.
Today we want to talk about a startup project called iTouch ID; what this does, is basically makes your life easier by providing you with one fingerprint touch id scanner to access all your accounts. You might think that this is absolutely ridiculous as a security measure for all your important accounts.
Well, fret no more because firstly, nobody else in the entire world has the same fingerprint as you, and secondly, the device captures an image of your fingerprint and stores only the analysis data of the print. This means, that a hacker won’t be able to access your fingerprint, because it’s basically not stored anywhere.
Makes us wonder – a. When did our brains become so dull that we can’t even remember our own passwords and numbers? Oh right, when we had to protect everything. b. Why would anyone want to hack into a lay man’s account? Honestly, today, who is a layman? Enter over-protective technology, that makes us believe our life is in danger 24 X 7.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMrgMy6sdbo
Now that you have understood the iTouch ID’s basic functionality let’s take a look at a couple of other things that it can do. The iTouch can act as your laptop’s main password alternative, it can also manage multiple passwords on your multiple accounts, it can automatically log you into social networking sites and other accounts that you frequently visit, and it can even lock and unlock files just by creating a specific setting.
Way to make us lazier than we already are! It’s like technology is suddenly demeaning human power rather than enhancing it. It’s like this condescending voice in our head that is saying – Hello person, you are going to forget your password eventually, then somebody will hack into your account and steal all your money, then you’re going to die unhappy. Human reaction – Dear technology, please take over my life already.
Luckily we already know that this attachment is rather small, so it won’t cause you any hassle of tangled wires or adding weight to your device etc. What we also know is that it is not easily destructible, simply because of the way it has been crafted. It has been made out of an aircraft grade aluminum with a hard-anodized finish and laser-cut sapphire glass.
This that it is completely waterproof and has the ability to resist scratches. Basically, a lot of money has been spent to protect you, so you might as well take advantage of it by paying some more money,
Hardware wise it comes with a Fingerprint Sensor: ID FPS360, capacitive touch to detect the user’s fingerprint, 500 pixels per inch resolution, 256 x 300 pixel array, measures 0.72 inches (18.2 mm width) by 0.42 inches (10.6 mm length) by 0.24 inches (6 mm height), and has a power supply of 5V via USB. Apart from this the product also features a USB 2.0, and as mentioned earlier is waterproof and scratch resistant. On the software front, this security product comes with an iTouch ID FPS360 Personal Identity Device USB Biometric Fingerprint scanner.
To elaborate a little bit more about the features and functionality of the product, we should know that it’s biometric fingerprint data are encrypted and stored in a secure password storage system. It supports a native USB implementation to enable the device, it has a two level authentication process, and is AES encrypted. See what we mean by ‘over-protective technology’ to the rescue?
There are 10 variants of iTouch IDs with varying price range. The Friendly iTouch ID comes at $3, the First iTouch ID comes at $79, the Green iTouch ID, the Gold iTouch ID and the Simple iTouch ID come at $99, the Personal iTouch ID comes at $119, the Share iTouch ID comes at $189, the Share a Personal ID comes at $ 222, the High Five iTouch ID comes at $444 and the Double High Five ID comes at $888.
If that’s not enough of time and money spent on protecting yourself virtually, there are a couple of system requirements that you will have to fulfill before purchasing the device. You will need a PC with 1200 MHz or higher processor clock speed, a 512MB of RAM, 100MB of available hard disk space, Super VGA (800×600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor, USB 2.0 backward compatible for USB 1.1 and an OS Windows or Mac OS X and Android.
Overall it is quite an impressive piece of work, it’s complicated, sophisticated, intricate, well thought out and honestly it is also innovative. However that sense of awe we had mentioned in the beginning is still not there. Today technology has become so accessible that, the sophisticated technology we once thought could only be used by the CIA or MI6 or James Bond can now easily be bought by us too.
The main attraction towards technology back when we were kids, was the magic it produced and the mystery behind it. Today, even though we know everything, and what we don’t know can be found out very simply, the charm technology holds on us still unbreakable. Won’t you agree?
Here’s another reason for Samsung fans to glory in as news of Samsung Galaxy S7’s USB Type C port gets confirmed. Instead of the standard microUSB port, the new Samsung smartphone will come equipped with the new-age port, which has recently become a popular choice for many smartphone manufacturers.
Type C ports have been in news for a while now, and for all the good reasons. One of the biggest advantages of these is that they allow reversible charging options, which means the cord can be plugged in either way. It also allows for faster charging as well as data transfer. The latter is more efficient than data transfer using USB 3.0.
Samsung has always had an edge over other tech giants in terms of fast charging, so this is one advantage of the Type-C port that is not the highlight of S7. But the reversible cable is definitely a nice touch. Let’s see how soon other companies, which haven’t opted for it already, make this switch to USB Type C.
Earlier this week Google launched two new phones at the official event in San Francisco – Nexus 5X and Nexus 6P. As retailers and buyers gear up for the pre-order of these new devices, what comes as a wet blanket is the connectivity problem of 5X – it comes with a USB cable that is not compatible with most computers. The Google website shows that Nexus 5X comes containing a USB Type-C 15W charger and a USB Type-C to Type-C cable. This implies the user would have to spend an extra $13 (about Rs. 900) approximately for a USB Type-C to UBS Standard cable in order to be able to connect the phone to an average computer.
However, buyers of Nexus 6P won’t have to face this problem as it comes with a cable that lets you connect to all standard USB ports.
Ever since the inception of multimedia enabled phones, one question that has bothered the users is the storage space of these devices. Listening to the complaints, many companies have added the expandable storage feature, which is without a doubt, one of the most important feature of the phones. With the companies providing easy accessibility in terms of storing data as well as installing app data on the SD card, some of those issues are addressed. But what about devices which only have limited storage options like the blockbuster MOTO G which only comes in an 8 or 16 GB option. And what if you are a multimedia hoarder and even with expandable memory, you are not satisfied with the storage space. Here the SanDisk Ultra 16GB Micro USB 2.0 OTG Pen Drive
will come for your rescue.
The Sandisk Ultra is a boon for OTG devices with limited storage
The Sandisk On-The-Go Pendrive is a tiny dual sided flash drive that comes with a USB 2.0 jack on one end and a micro USB slot on the other end. It is available in 16,32 and 64 GB variants starting at Rs. 629. The drive attaches to your OTG enabled phones and is recognized easily on the phones we tested the drive on.
On the design front, this drive has a protective casing for both USB ends. The casing clicks when it completely covers the USB to secure the ends. But while dropping it head on to the ground for testing we found that the micro USB side would slide back on impact, exposing the head, which is a bit of a worry. The micro USB end is also a bit tiny so you may have to take off the protective casing on your phone to connect the device. The middle portion with is sturdy and easy to hold.
The drive’s read and write performance though are not satisfactory. In our test we found the reading speed was 16.86 MB/s whereas the writing speed was 10.75 MB/s, which is almost a third of the USB 2.0 speeds. But with the convenience it offers, some may overlook the low transfer speeds.
SanDisk provides a downloadable app, Memory Zone. This sleek looking app has a user friendly interface and allows you to password-protect your content. It also lets you sync your data with cloud storage options like Dropbox, Google Drive or Box.
Overall the tiny, one of a kind device is functional with some flaws. Considering its price and what it offers it can also be considered a value for money. Sandisk needs to work on the speeds of the device, immediately and make the casings better so they don’t expose the Micro-USB end.
It is said that when Apple will launch its new iPhone i.e. iPhone 6 in September, it will also introduce its new Lightning data-power cable—that is, if newly leaked images circulating online are to be believed.
Several leaked photos in recent days have suggested Apple may be looking to move to a reversible USB connector for its next-generation Lightning cables, making it easier for users to plug the cables into their computers, chargers, and other equipment with standard USB ports.
MacRumors reported a leaked picture from iOS leaker, Sonny Dickson, showing the Lightning cable with a reversible USB connector. While the USB connector on the current Lightning cable is attached to the bottom of its metal housing, the connector of the supposedly newer cable is attached to the center.
“It is also therefore possible that the new Lightning cable could utilize USB 3.0 technology, as current Lightning cables support only USB 2.0. However, no other evidence suggests that the cable could be of the USB 3.0 variety.” the report from MacRumor noted.
However, Apple is not the only one with this technology. A California company by the name of UltraTek already holds a patent for the reversible connector and is selling cables through major online retailers. MacRumors suggested the possibility of the new cables being shipped along with the new iPhone 6 and subsequent iOS devices. Aside from the possible USB 3.0 support, the new Lightning cable could also support high-definition audio playback on “Made for iPhone” accessories.
Apple is rumored to be introducing a brand new proprietary version of the traditional USB connector
That being said, this move may harm the company as all those new Macs would be incompatible with current USB Type A cords — and presumably incompatible with any other newer standards that could be released in the near future, including the expected USB Type C plug. Apple would also charge third-party accessory makers licensing fees to use its patented USB reversible connector.
Also, the new connector would also help Apple effectively ‘own’ both ends of the charging cord, so if an iPhone/iPad user wanted to employ a micro USB cable from another manufacturer, or a future USB Type C cord, they’d have to purchase two adaptors — one for each end of the cord. The word is that Apple has already issued Lightning Cable MFi specifications for headphones last June, letting accessory makers build products that connect to the Lightning port instead of a 3.5-mm jack.
