Indian Smartphone Market Grew 10% In 2018. Xiaomi Still Maintains No. 1 Position

The Indian smartphone market is a very competitive one. Being one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world, it is natural that everyone wants a piece of the pie. The problem with that is increased competition in the space. There are a lot of players competing in the market and everyone is trying to come out on the top. But according to research by a well-known analyst firm Canalys, the Indian smartphone market grew by 10% in 2018 over the previous year. The company that took the most advantage out of it, was Xiaomi, which claimed the No.1 spot in shipments.

According to the research, Xiaomi saw shipments of around 41 million shipments over 25.7 in 2017. The brand saw its market share soar from 20.6 in 2017 to 29.9 last year. The second place is occupied by Samsung, with 35.4 million shipments in 2018. With that, Samsung saw its market share grow from 23.6 to 25.8 over the period of 2017-2018. Other players in the top 5 were Vivo, Oppo, and Micromax respectively.

The Indian Smartphone Market In 2019

India has become Xiaomi’s biggest market worldwide, bigger than China which is the home country of Xiaomi. In the fourth quarter of 2018, it shipped 9.4 million smartphones to China, and 10 million to India. Despite the global smartphone market decline of sales last year, the Indian smartphone market stayed unfazed, even managed to grow significantly in the time period. More growth is expected in 2019 for the Indian smartphone market.

Canalys also expects that with the announcements of the Budget 2019 taken into consideration, more growth will be on the horizon as the disposable income will increase. According to the report, India now has 10% of the world’s smartphone market, up from 6% five years ago. It is one of the 6 markets out of the top 20 which saw positive full-term growth.

  • Essential’s Next Phone To Have Camera Under The Display

Essential’s Next Phone To Have Camera Under The Display

The Essential PH-1 was launched back in 2017. The phone was met with a lot of hype, particularly because the device promised Android the way it was meant to be. The device lacked any bloatware and was promised constant security updates. But due to the high asking price and underwhelming camera performance, the device was a major flop. It didn’t help that the phone got a bad critic rating at launch. But it seems that the next smartphone the brand will make would be revolutionary. Drawings from Essential show what could be the front camera and the fingerprint sensor under the display.

Andy Rubin, the founder of Essential and Android, confirmed that the company will release a second smartphone soon. The smartphone may be called the Essential PH-2 as a mention of that was leaked on Reddit a few days ago. The device will be the second smartphone Essential will launch since its inception.

    Essential PH-2 Details

Not much is known about the Essential’s next smartphone, which could be called the PH-2. The drawings suggest that the camera will be placed just like it was in the original Essential PH-1. The difference this time will be that it would be present under the display. Plans in drawings suggest the Essential Phone PH-2 concept with a camera and light sensor is hidden behind the display which can become semitransparent on command. In the drawings, a fingerprint sensor is mentioned in the home button of the on-screen navigation buttons.

The PH-1 was one of the world’s first phones with a notch, and Essential managed to minimize that in its first attempt. There is no saying when the next version of the Essential Phone will hit the markets, but the company is expected to make a big announcement soon. Maybe Essential is planning something for the MWC 2019 that will be held later this month in Barcelona.

These Glasses were meant for better focus and faster completion of tasks in the workers of Enterprises. Looks like Google is all set to release the next iteration of the Glasses. • OnePlus Sends Invites For An Exclusive Event At MWC

OnePlus Sends Invites For An Exclusive Event At MWC

OnePlus has seen unprecedented success over the last few years. The primary reason for the success would be the brand’s ideology which, has been the same since the beginning. OnePlus has always delivered on its promise of a premium experience on a budget. And it seems like the company has some big plans going forward. OnePlus has sent out media invites for an event held within closed doors at the MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

The invite reads “Join OnePlus at Ultramarinos where drinks and a taste of the future will be on us. We’ll be celebrating MWC 2019 at this exclusive, invite-only event.” It is highly unlikely that OnePlus will launch something at the event. The event is expected to be rather just a discussion about what the future holds for OnePlus and smartphones. OnePlus has held similar events in the past, during MWC, and have usually been just networking events.

What Will OnePlus Showcase At The Event?

With the launch of a completely new device or product out of the window; OnePlus is expected to show something revolutionary at the event. Considering the exclusive invite and the cryptic message alongside it, there is definitely something the brand is trying to pull off. OnePlus announced in December that it will be among the first to use the Snapdragon 855. Maybe it is the new OnePlus device they will showcase, but that seems highly unlikely. OnePlus also promised a 5G device in 2019, so it may showcase that technology at the event.

  • LG G8 To Feature 3D Face Unlock System

LG G8 To Feature 3D Face Unlock System

LG Mobile division has been struggling to find success. Despite launching two good devices last year, LG couldn’t sell many of them and thus these phones got lost in obscurity. But LG refuses to give up. It plans on releasing at least two flagships at MWC 2019 if reports are to be believed. The phones are expected to be the G8 ThinQ and the V50 ThinQ. LG themselves have sort of confirmed that the G8 will be making it’s debut soon and a number of leaks later, we know a lot of things about the device already.

But LG has gone out of their way to reveal an interesting information about the G8 ThinQ. In a blog post published today, LG has confirmed that the LG G8 ThinQ will have the 3D Face Unlock feature by using a TOF camera from Infineon.

    LG G8 ThinQ Specifications

The LG G8 will be the basic flagship for 2019 with the specifications matching it. The phone will Snapdragon 855 chipset, a 6-inch display with a notch. The battery capacity will be 3500mAh for the LG G8. The phone may arrive in 2 variants, One with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of storage, and 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The TOF camera mentioned in the blog post by LG is made by Infineon. LG says in the post, “While other 3D technologies utilize complex algorithms to calculate an object’s distance from the camera lens, the ToF image sensor chip delivers more accurate measurements by capturing infrared light as it is reflected off the subject. As a result, ToF is faster and more effective in ambient light, reducing the workload on the application processor thereby also reducing power consumption.”

The technology works similar to the FaceID in Apple’s newest iPhones. The difference will be that Apple uses an array of sensors. LG will probably may just use the TOF camera for authentication. How secure this solution will be isn’t known yet. LG is expected to unveil the LG G8 ThinQ at MWC 2019 in Barcelona. The pricing is expected to be around the $750 mark or around Rs. 45,000 for the LG G8 ThinQ.

  • Google’s New Extension Tells You If Your Password Is Unsafe

Google’s New Extension Tells You If Your Password Is Unsafe

In this day and age where Internet has taken over everything, one can never be too careful. There have been several data breaches over the past few months which have made people anxious about privacy on internet. Google aims to minimize that anxiety by launching an extension called Password Checkup. The tool will help you check if your data credentials have been compromised in a previous data leak.

Password Checkup: How Does It Work?

The extension can be added to the Chrome browser to track login details every time a sign in occurs. It then searches through approximately 4 billion compromised credentials. The extension will then alert if the credentials have been part of a breach and if a password change is required. Google says that it won’t store any of the users data and that the extension will never reveal the credentials to Google. The aim of this added security is to prevent hijack of the extension’s functionality, which could then be used to gain access to a users private info.

According to the description of the extension, it will anonymously report information on the number of look-ups. Google is also looking to improve the way the extension works over time; hopefully it’ll be embedded into a future version of the Chrome browser so more users can take the necessary steps to protect their accounts. This seems like a great initiative by Google.

But, if their claims are true about not harvesting this data, this could be a great new add-on for people who are concerned about their privacy on the internet. If you are interested in checking out the extension, you can head to the Chrome Extension store, or alternatively click here.

  • JioPhone 3 To Have A Touchscreen And Will Be More Expensive

JioPhone 3 To Have A Touchscreen And Will Be More Expensive

Reliance launched the JioPhone in 2017 and it became an instant success. The ability to run 4G VoLTE on a cheap device was a dream for many in India. The phone could run some basic apps thanks to the KaiOS in it. WhatsApp also was launched on the platform a while ago. JioPhone is a success story that Reliance may want to repeat again. If recent leaks are to be believed, the JioPhone 3 is in the works. The news may be more exciting because it reportedly will have a touchscreen this time around.

The original JioPhone had a T9 keypad. The JioPhone 2 used a QWERTY one for convenience. A touchscreen in the third iteration seems like the way to go. The pricing has gone up with each iteration so the JioPhone 3 will be significantly more expensive than the last one.

    JioPhone 3 Specifications

The JioPhone 3 will feature a 5 inch capacitive touchscreen. The smartphone will also have 2GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. There will also be support for memory expansion using a MicroSD card. The phone will have a 5MP camera on the back and a 2MP one on the front for video calling.

What is not clear is what the phone will run on. If we follow Jio’s past records, the answer will be KaiOS with touch support. But the phone will be significantly expensive and has a generous amount of RAM, so Android GO edition is not out of the question either. Touch support for KaiOS is apparently already in the works.

The smartphone will launch in July and will be available to the public in August. The phone will be sold offline and will carry a price tag of around Rs. 4500. That is a significant increase over the previous one. It remains to be seen if the phone will be as successful as the original JioPhone.

YouTube CEO Admits Rewind Was Bad. Promises A Better One in 2019

Last year saw the release of YouTube Rewind. The video quickly became the highest disliked video of all time. As of writing this article, the video sits at over 15 million dislikes. The video was flagged for missing out the key creators and elements that have made YouTube what it is today. There hasn’t been a response from anyone at YouTube about the Rewind. That is until now. YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki in a blog post, admitted that the Rewind was not what they set out to do.

Susan, in her post, seemed to admit that the Rewind didn’t show the year’s key moments. She wrote “Even at home, my kids told me our 2018 Rewind was “cringey.” We hear you that it didn’t accurately show the year’s key moments, nor did it reflect the YouTube you know. We’ll do better to tell our story in 2019.”

    YouTube Rewind 2018

The YouTube Rewind is an annual video that is released by YouTube since 2011. The video highlights the trends that were famous on YouTube. The Rewind was flagged last year for not including some major creators like PewDiePie, H3H3 Productions etc. The video also didn’t mention some of the key moments of 2018 like the KSI vs Logan Paul Fight or PewDiePie vs T-Series. The video got so much flak, it became the most disliked video on the platform. It broke the previous record of Justin Bieber’s Baby, with almost 10 million dislikes.

Many creators then released their own version of the Rewind. Some of them got even more likes than the original video. YouTube seems to finally understand their mistakes and the problems with the video. Let’s hope they don’t repeat the same this year as well.

  • Moto Z4 Play To Have A 48MP Camera And Snapdragon 675 Chipset

Moto Z4 Play To Have A 48MP Camera And Snapdragon 675 Chipset

Motorola launched the Moto Z lineup as their first modular smartphone series in 2016. The smartphones saw success at first, but then just a lukewarm response if any. But it looks like Motorola is not ready to throw in the towel just yet. The once-iconic brand hasn’t seen a breakout success in a while. But reports about a possible Moto Z4 have emerged online. Now some details about the Z4 are out and it looks like a mid ranger.

    Moto Z4 Play Specifications

Motorola’s Z Play series has always targeted the Mid Range market. Expect the Moto Z4 Play to be no different. The Moto Z4 Play is expected to have a 6.2 inch AMOLED screen with a waterdrop notch and a slight chin. The phone will run on the 11nm Snapdragon 675 and will arrive in two variants. One will have 4GB RAM and 64GB storage and the other will have 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. The phone will ship with Android 9 Pie with close to stock Android. Moto Z4 Play will be powered by a 3,600 mAh battery. The highlight will be the 48MP camera at the back. Moto Z4 Play will use a sensor from Q Technology.

The device is said to retain support for all the Moto Mods. Motorola promised the first gen Mods to be compatible for at least 3 years. That promise should’ve worn out with the Z3 series, but looks like Mods are staying. The launch of the Moto Z4 lineup may also see new mods alongside it.

The pricing and launch date is a little vague at the moment. But considering Motorola’s launch records, the phone may arrive in the first half of 2019. The Z3 series didn’t launch in India, so the hopes of the Z4 Play making it seem pretty dim.

  • Samsung Galaxy S10 Will Support Reverse Wireless Charging, WiFi 6

Samsung Galaxy S10 Will Support Reverse Wireless Charging, WiFi 6

Samsung is all set to release the Galaxy S10 series this month. There have been a number of leaks surrounding the devices and we pretty much know everything about the devices now. But a new leak has emerged courtesy the Federal Communications Commission or the FCC. The recent documents leak give an insight to an interesting feature of the device. The Samsung Galaxy S10 series is all set to get reverse wireless charging support. The phones are also going to be the first ones to arrive with WiFi 6 compatibility.

XDA Developers first caught eye of these images on FCC’s website. Reverse wireless charging is not a new feature to have in a smartphone. The Huawei Mate 20 Pro was the first commercially available device to have this feature. The difference between both of them is that Samsung’s technology is faster.

    What Is Reverse Wireless Charging?

Huawei first launched the reverse wireless charging technology with the Mate 20 Pro. It allows the phones that support wireless charging to charge another wireless charging compatible phone. It is done through touching the backs of both phones together. According to tests done by GSMArena, the reverse wireless charging in the Mate 20 Pro has an output less than 5W. The Galaxy S10 is 9W wireless charging compatible. This should mean faster reverse wireless charging speeds.

But reverse wireless charging requires two phone to be lined up perfectly so it may become awkward to use. One more issue is the battery size of the Galaxy S10 series. Barring the S10 Plus with the rumored 4000mAh, the meager 3300 mAh and 3000 mAh battery in the S10 and the S10e respectively may drain the battery faster.

Samsung is also adding a WiFi 6 compatible modem inside the Galaxy S10 series. This theoretically means faster WiFi speeds on compatible routers. There are not many routers compatible with this tech yet, so this may not be useful for a lot of people. The Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 Plus and S10e are launching on February 20.

  • Xiaomi Working On A Smartphone With A Punch Hole Display

Punch Hole display cameras are all the rage these days. It wouldn’t be wrong to call it the leading trend of 2019. There have been lesser bezels, notches and various solutions to reach to the bezel less future. Many smartphone makers are busy trying to innovate with the trend. Now, Xiaomi also is hopping on the punch hole display bandwagon and may launch a device with the said feature soon, according to patent documents.

The patent filed by Xiaomi is for dual camera in the punch hole display. The patent was filed on January 29, 2019 in the Global Design Database of the WIPO. It stands for World Intellectual Property Office. The patent consists of 24 illustrations of different models. All the designs show what appear to be two cameras in the display. Many other sensors are also placed in the screen like a proximity and light sensor.

    Punch Hole Displays

Punch hole displays are nothing new in smartphones. First introduced late last year with the Samsung A8s and the Honor View20, the trend seems to quickly catch up. More and more smartphone makers are trying to use this technology in their products. Samsung is also set to use punch hole display to put selfie camera in the Galaxy S10 series. Also, the Galaxy S10 Plus is rumored to have 2 cameras embedded in the display.

Xiaomi launching a smartphone with the said feature would mean that the punch hole camera will trickle down to affordable prices. It is not known currently which smartphone Xiaomi will use to introduce this feature. But the Mi Mix series has always avoided the notch cleverly, so the punch hole display to put cameras will be a good fit for the Mix series to begin with.
