  • Apple Settles Patent Lawsuit With Nokia For A Whopping US $2 Billion

Apple Settles Patent Lawsuit With Nokia For A Whopping US $2 Billion

Apple seems to be in a mood for catching a break from the “Smartphone Patent Wars”. After battling the patent violation lawsuit with Samsung, Apple seems to have decided on settling the patent infringement dispute with Nokia back in May. Apple seemed eager to avoid the legal battle like the one with Samsung and both the companies agreed on moving from adverseries to business partners.

The details of settlement were initialy announced without disclosing the terms and the value of the settlement. According to the recent reports, Nokia announced that it has received a US $2 billion upfront cash payment from Apple (€1.7 billion) to settle the case. The terms of the new licensing deal are yet to be disclosed, including, whether Nokia would receive a US $2 billion quarterly payment or whether this was non-recurring catch-up settlement. Though the possibility of Apple paying US $2 billion quarterly to Nokia seems highly unlikely.

The original lawsuit began in December with Nokia accusing Apple of patent infringement in multiple countries. Apple was also accused of infringing patents from Nokia subsideries – NSN and Alcatel-Lucent.

At the center of the dispute were 32 patents involving the iPhone 3GS and subsequently launched iPhones (along with other Apple products) which Apple claimed Nokia intentionally left out of a 2011 licensing agreement. The lawsuit allegedly covered many elements of smartphone handset design and functionality, with Nokia’s patent portfolio spanning display technology, antennas, chipset, user interface and more.

Apple responded to the lawsuit with its own and removed Withings’ products (a division of Nokia) from its online store and worldwide Apple stores. Both companies, soon after resolved the issues as Apple started restocking Withings products, with new licensing terms and agreeing to a joint effort to explore “future collaboration in digital health initiatives.”

After the settlement, Apple and Nokia decided to take the usual patent licensing deal a step further by collaborating on technology along with research and development. The collaboration indicates that Apple might be paying Nokia to help explore the technologies related to digital health, optical network and IP routing.

No information has been received about how Nokia plans to invest the upfront cash payment received from Apple. Whereas for Apple, it may not be a major financial setback, as according to reports, the company has more than a 750 billion dollars in cash and investments.

  • Apple Discontinues iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

Apple Discontinues iPod Nano and iPod Shuffle

Earlier today, Apple announced with an official statement, that the company will discontinue the iPod Nano and iPod shuffle. The company spokesperson made the following statement in an e-mail, “Today, we are simplifying our iPod lineup with two models of iPod touch now with double the capacity starting at just $199 and we are discontinuing the iPod shuffle and iPod nano.”

The news of Apple pulling the plug on its traditional music players was somewhat expected. It has been three years since Apple discontinued the iPod Classic. Apart from the iPod Classic, iPod Nano and iPod shuffle were the only iPods which didn’t run an iOS. Apple already expected that its iPhone, iPad and iPod touch will take over the traditional music players. As none of them support Apple Music, Apple’s online streaming service for audio and video. It had already been predicted at the time  of the launch of the first iPhone, that the iPhone, which included an “iPod” app for playing music would lead to iPod’s fall.

The last standing iPod, the iPod Touch (which is essentially an iPhone without the cellphone service) has also been “simplified” with two new models, killing the earlier 16GB  and 64GB models. The new iPod touch lineup includes a 32GB variant priced at $199 and a 128GB model priced at $299.

The iPod Nano was last updated in 2012 with bluetooth support for wireless headphones and speakers. Apart from updating the colour options in 2015, no significant update has been available since past 5 years. The iPod Shuffle which was launched in 2005, saw its last upgrade in 2010 along with the updated colour options. The fact that no major upgrades were made available for both the traditional iPods was an indicator enough.

For those who plan on visiting Apple’s Website for hoarding the classics before they disappear, Apple has taken down the pages from the website. Nonetheless, the last of the traditional iPods might still be available online, till the stocks run out.

  • The Rock is Making a Movie With Siri

The Rock is Making a Movie With Siri

Remember last year’s Taylor swift and Apple music collaboration, well Apple is back at it.

Rumours about the Siri integrated wireless charging have barely subsided and now Siri has been reported to star in a movie along with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.

While most of us are busy bossing Siri around, the voice assistant has managed to get its own movie titled, The Rock x Siri: Dominate The Day. Dominating the day or not, Siri is definitely dominating Hollywood now.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufBLI6bB9sg

Despite initially describing it as a “Movie”, Johnson now says that his partnership with Apple is a commercial.

The extended commercial or a movie is a collaboration between Johnson and Apple. The “movie” made quite an entrance with an over-the-top poster featuring automobiles, satellites, space, car crashes etc.

The Rock also tweeted along with the poster of The Rock x Siri: Dominate The Day.

By the looks of his Facebook page, Johnson seems quite excited about the collab. In his own words, the movie will be the “dopest” and was made to “motivate you to get out there and get the job done.”

The film itself will be released on July 24th, on Apple’s YouTube channel. Unlike most of the content being exclusive to Apple Music, Apple’s Siri co-starring movie with The Rock will be available for free on YouTube.

With Apple releasing the Siri integrated HomePod in a couple of months, this seems like an excellent opportunity to show that Apple’s virtual assistant can be held at par with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

  • iPhone 9’s L-Shaped Batteries To Be Made By LG

iPhone 9’s L-Shaped Batteries To Be Made By LG

We already have enough of the iPhone 8 rumours and speculations, but that hasn’t stopped new reports from claiming  that LG will be the exclusive battery supplier of the L-shaped batteries of next  iPhone, dubbed ‘iPhone 9’. According to the report, Apple and LG have reached an agreement, making LG the sole vendor of the iPhone 9’s battery.

Apple is usually known to hire multiple providers for sourcing parts but apparently, LG’s huge investment in dedicated battery manufacturing facilities was a major reason why Apple sided with them. One of the other reasons could be the recent backing out of providers from the agreement causing an expected further delay in launch of the iPhone 8.

As per the recent speculations, Apple’s next-generation iPhone will use a battery module that is either “bent” or extended to one side at its bottom to form an “L” shape.  The L-shaped battery feature is also expected in the iPhone 8. The feature will not only allow Appleto increase the battery size without increasing the phone size but will also boost the charging speed.

LG’s focus on the L-shaped design can also be another reason for Apple to get in with the agreement. Whereas other suppliers like Samsung, Motorola etc., choose to stick with the traditional design featured in the most smartphones.

A report earlier this year said that Apple could also introduce two new OLED screen sizes with the iPhone 9, including 5.28-inches and 6.46-inches. Of-course nothing can be said for sure based on the far fetched speculations and considering the delays in the production of iPhone 8 we might want to get past the current launch season before taking a dive in the next one.

    Meanwhile,

The “iPhone 8” is rumored to feature a full-front OLED screen, front-facing 3D-sensing camera, wireless charging and embedded Touch ID sensors. And is expected to be announced at Apple’s September event.

  • Apple Working On a Siri Activated Wireless Charging Dock

Apple Working On a Siri Activated Wireless Charging Dock

The rumours about Apple bringing wireless charging to its iPhone 8 lineup have been innumerous. Given its membership in the wireless power consortium, Apple is likely to depend upon the Qi inductive standard for its rumoured new feature. For a feature like wireless charging, the company will most likely have to come up with a pad- like device, may be like a -Siri powered wireless charging dock. And considering that Apple has recently been granted a new patent which states, “Smart dock for activating a voice recognition mode of a portable electronic device,” the company might just roll out a Siri powered dock sometime in the future.

The patent describes a device that could serve as a dock  for “a portable electronic device”, an iPhone outfitted with microphones for voice commands, allowing the users to access the phone from a distance, processors and wireless charging. The microphone installation in dock indicates it being powered by Siri. Further, the patent also states multiple ways of powering the iPhone which includes wireless charging, docks that range from basic microphone and speaker integrated connectors to mini computers with displays.

Filed back in 2012, the patent defines Siri integration in the dock as “a voice recognition mode of the portable electronic device,” than a built in feature but considering the upcoming trends in the tech world, Apple might infuse Siri directly in the dock. The filing date of the patent also suggests that Apple might have been working on the idea for a while.

Amidst all the ongoing rumours and announcements, the $349 HomePod, one of the upcoming Apple product is also expected to hit the stores in December. The Siri supported speaker is rumoured to serious contender against the Amazon Echo and Google Home. As to when the Siri powered wireless charging will be announced or if it ever will be, its all upto Apple. Amongst all the speculation, we still can’t claim it for sure until Apple officially announces the rumoured Siri connected dock.

Apple Showcases New Emoji Heading To iOS and Mac

The new emoji set include some interesting emojis, including a zombie emoji, a “mind blown” emoji, a new puke emoji and for overtime you needed to express a dinosaur in your conversations the new T-Rex dinosaur emoji.

Emojis have become popular of the past few years, and while every company showcases emojis differently, the essence of the conversation remains the same, and allows people to express what they are feeling in an otherwise bland textual conversation.

But Emoji also keeps up with the trends now days as Apple will also add Daenerys Targaryen, aka the Mother of Dragons, from the Game of Thrones as an emoji.

Apple is also celebrating World Emoji Day in the App Store. By highlighting a number of emoji-themed apps available for download for emoji lovers in the App store, including

  • Apple iPhone 8 May Face Major Delays

Apple iPhone 8 May Face Major Delays

The rumor mill is awake with the recent reports of delays and production struggles faced by Apple for its new iPhone 8 lineup. Earlier, a report suggested that Apple has taken the manufacturing of iPhone 8’s key parts in it’s own hands for device’s timely release.

A more recent report suggests that the three new iPhones, the iPhone 8, the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus are yet to start mass production. While this might come as a shock for many, the reports suggest that the production for new ‘7s’ iterative with 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch phones might ramp up in August. Whereas, the iPhone 8 with the OLED 5.8-inch display, no bezel design with the “all new glass body” may not be available until November.

Even though, Foxconn, Pegatron and Wistron will reportedly be manufacturing the new Apple iPhone lineup hand in hand, the iPhones are still not expected to be at a level that may be considered mass production. Multiple reports have also indicated problems with features like wireless charging and the 3D front sensor said to replace TouchID.

It is also said that due to one of the suppliers walking out on the company, Apple resorted to purchasing and providing manufacturers with the  production equipment required for manufacturing of the rigid flexible printed circuit board (connects chips with every part of he handset), a key component of the iPhone.

The production of iPhone 8 will be further the delayed as one of the three suppliers for manufacturing the RFPCB has recently backed out of the agreement. The only way Apple can hope to hasten the production process is by purchasing its own equipment and leasing it to its suppliers.

Apple may also ship the new iPhones with few key features disabled at first, while others say that the delays might just push back the release altogether. The Apple iPhone launch is expected to be bigger than ever, and if the leaks are accurate, the launch of three new models on the iPhone’s 10th anniversary will get industry excited.

  • The iPhone X May Not Have A Touch ID At All

The iPhone X May Not Have A Touch ID At All

The new design of the iPhone 8 has been doing rounds for more than a few months. However, till now the leaks mentioned a fingerprint scanner embedded in the display. But, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo released a note to investors that mentions several details for the upcoming iPhone expected to launch in September. Here is a full list of expected changes mentioned in the note.

    • Apple will roll out three iPhone models in 2017; the new iPhone 8 with an OLED display & revisions of the LCD models including 4.7” display & 5.5” display.
    • OLED iPhone will adopt full-screen design, with the “highest screen-to-body ratio of any smartphone currently available worldwide”,  the OLED model will also come with a virtual Home button, though the button will not support fingerprint recognition.

We predict the OLED model won’t support fingerprint recognition, reasons being: (1) the full-screen design doesn’t work with existing capacitive fingerprint recognition, and (2) the scan-through ability of the under-display fingerprint solution still has technical challenges, including: (i) requirement for a more complex panel pixel design; (ii) disappointing scan-through of OLED panel despite it being thinner than LCD panel; and (iii) weakened scan-through performance due to overlayered panel module. As the new OLED iPhone won’t support under-display fingerprint recognition, we now do not expect production ramp-up will be delayed again (we previously projected the ramp-up would be postponed to late October or later).

    • OLED iPhone will support 3D sensing for facial recognition & improved selfie quality. This will be used to replace the TouchID and hence used to unlock phones and make payments.
    • OLED iPhone & 5.5” LCD iPhone will both come with DRAM capacity of 3GB (for dual-camera setup), while 4.7” version will only use 2GB DRAM (for single camera).
    • Three new models will all come with 64GB and 256GB storage options.
    • All three new models will have a Lightning port but will have an embedded USB-C power delivery chip for higher charging speeds, which would be not possible through the existing charger. The charger shipping in the box will be a 5W charger, so fast charging hardware will be sold separately.
    • Wireless charging on all new iPhones will require an optional accessory and will not be available out of the box.
    • The output power of the receiver & speaker of OLED iPhone will be more consistent to create better stereo effects.
    • The OLED version will offer fewer options for casing colors than LCD iPhone models, restricted in the early launch phase to special colors.
    • October-November & August-September as production ramp-up schedules of OLED iPhone & LCD iPhone, respectively.

For optimized promotional effect, we think Apple may unveil the three models simultaneously in September, though the launch date of the OLED version may trail that of LCD models, and supply tightness may not improve before 1H18.

    • All three new models for the 2017 launch will be 80-85 million units, with an equal split between OLED & LCD versions. As Apple expects higher demand for the OLED iPhone.
    • iPhone 8 has an ‘Apple Neural Engine’ which handles both ProMotion and various “artificial intelligence tasks”
    • All three iPhones will be unveiled simultaneously “For optimized promotional effect” However release dates will vary. September release for iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus, October-November for the iPhone 8

  • Is This Really The iPhone 8 ?

Is This Really The iPhone 8 ?

Yesterday, Steve Hemmerstoffer (aka @OnLeaks) along with TigerMobile leaked the next big iPhone. The iPhone 8, rumored to be based completely on factory schematics, the mockup prototype shows off closely what the next iPhone may look like.

If the leak is to be believed the iPhone 8 will indeed have a large 5.8 inch edge to edge display. But will also have that notorious cutout on the top edge for the earpiece camera and sensors.  The iPhone 8 is also rumored to have an OLED display along with wireless charging, apart from the obvious improvements on camera, processor etc.

The back appears to have a dual camera bump with no mention of a physical touch-id on the back as was mentioned by some leaks. This also will possibly result in Apple’s implementation of the in screen fingerprint scanner, since Qualcomm has also recently launched their technology, along with one which Synaptics had show last year.

The dimensions obtained show a 7.5mm thickness for the iPhone, along with a 71mm width. which makes it slightly bigger than the iPhone 7 but considerably smaller than the iPhone 7 Plus.

    • iPhone 8 – 143.5 x 71 x 7.5 mm (5.65 x 2.79 x 0.29 in)

Could this finally be the end for bezels on the iPhone, and will this design be the revolutionary iPhone? It is really hard to say, however, with several credible sources and leaksters on the job, it may as well be ridiculously close to the actual , if not the actual iPhone 8. Either way, it has caught our eye.

  • Apple Just Ordered 70 Million OLED Panels from Samsung

Apple Just Ordered 70 Million OLED Panels from Samsung

According to a new report, a supply chain source familiar with iPhone designs has claimed that Apple has ordered 70 Million displays for the next iPhone, with the extent of the order reaching 95 Million if the demand exceeds expectations of the company.

Despite tie-ups with LG in the past, Apple has chosen Samsung as the sole provider of the OLED screens which will most likely be Super AMOLED. Samsung may invest as much as 8 Billion dollars in the next few months to ramp up production of the the OLED displays, to fulfil the order from Apple in time. Increasing the capacity means, that Samsung will also be able to supply to other manufacturers who were at present unable to procure Super AMOLED screens due to limited production and availability.

Samsung Electronics declined to comment, saying it cannot reveal customers’ orders.

So far rumours have predicted three iPhones launching this year, with a 5.2 inch model which will sport the curved OLED panels from Samsung. The other iPhones with 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches as display sizes will be revisions to the existing iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus. The same source also reports that all three handsets will also sport wireless charging and come with waterproofing just like the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 plus.

The premium model of the iPhone will have a front which is similar to the Galaxy S8 and will not have a home button, this variant will also be priced upwards of US $ 1000 . The next generation iPhone could be the first device to put the fingerprint scanner behind the glass of the display.
