Dell Unveils Latitude 7400 Laptop With New ExpressSign-In Feature

The advent of technological innovation has made human lives easier. A couple of decades ago, fingerprint sensor or facial recognition was a term pulled straight out of a science fiction novel. American multinational company Dell has launched a new laptop, the Latitude 7400 that takes another step towards the seamless integration of modern technology into our lives. The company introduced a new method of turning on a laptop and logging in without touching the keyboard at all.

    ExpressSign-In

The new ExpressSign-in feature from Dell will now scan for the user’s face even when the system is in sleep mode to automatically sign in to the system. The feature is introduced in a recently unveiled business-oriented laptop, the Latitude 7400 2-in-1. Apart from the new login feature, the laptop features a slim form factor.

    Dell Latitude 7400

Dell achieves the new login method with the help of Intel’s Context Sensing technology and Microsoft Windows ‘Hello’ recognition system. The Hello recognition system and other fingerprint-based sensors have aimed towards making life easier with previously attempted hands-free tests. Dell’s new method, however, takes this a step forward with the Latitude recognizing the user’s face and boots up with no user input via keyboard or any other device.

    Dell ExpressSign-In Latitude 7400

Dell’s trick to the new login method is to simply look at the screen while proximity sensors enable two LED lights to strobe from either side of the camera. After the screen turns on, the Windows Hello eye icon will try to recognize the user. The entire process of recognition by the system takes less than 5 seconds, as demonstrated by the company.

    Specifications

The Latitude 7400 2-in-1 from Dell is equipped with the i5 8th Generation Intel Core Processor with 8GB of RAM, which can be expanded up to 16GB. The laptop has various internal storage variants that start from 128GB PCIe/NVMe to 512GB. The battery pack also gets two variants: a 4-cell 52WHr and a 6-cell 78WHr. The laptop houses two USB 3.1, two Thunderbolt, HDMI, SIM, and a microSD card reader ports.

Dell Latitude 7400 is currently available for purchase starting from $1,599 (approx. Rs.1,11,000) and going upto $2000 (approx. Rs.1,38,000) for the specced-up variants.

  • Dell Refreshes The XPS 13 With Intel’s Latest 10th Gen CPU Processors

Dell Refreshes The XPS 13 With Intel’s Latest 10th Gen CPU Processors

Computex 2019 has seen its fair share of updates and overhauls in the specifications and design of laptops. However, none so far have crossed the generation in the processor unit. The Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop previously received a minor update regarding the placement of the webcam back in CES in the month of January. The long-awaited Intel 10th Gen Ice Lake processor also makes a debut with the XPS 13.

Along with a new display and keyboard, the key change made is the upgrade to Intel’s latest generation of CPUs. Intel’s new 10nm Ice Lake chips in the Dell XPS 13 are based on the U-Series lineup of the 10th generation. The company had to add fans to the XPS 13 to utilize the more powerful processor over the Y-Series lineup which was made specifically for fanless laptops and is a worthwhile trade for better performance. Dell, for assurance, is going as far as to claim two and a half times more processing strength than the last iteration of the notebook with the addition of the latest chipset.

Dell has also bumped up the screen size to 13.4 inches, changing the aspect ratio of the display to 16:10. This made the screen slightly taller than its previous versions. The latest version has a bigger keyboard and touchpad, which is a significant improvement over its predecessor. In a similar fashion to its variants from the past, the display options on the notebook are still FHD+ or 4K.

The Maglev (Magnetic Levitation) keys make an appearance in the XPS 13 2-in-1 laptop, borrowed from the XPS 15 from 2018. However, it is not the exact same keyboard and slight touches are evident due to the presence of more metal than the XPS 15. For biometric security, a fingerprint sensor is placed comfortably alongside the keyboard.

Additional variants of the XPS 13 are available with the latest iterations as well. Dell now gives the option of the 9th Generation Intel Core processors (i5, i7, and i9) along with the new GTX 1650 from NVIDIA and RAM upto 64GB. A new 4K OLED display is optional too. Dell has yet to announce the release of XPS 13 and XPS 15 in the global market, but the pricing of the regular XPS 15 sits at $999.99 (~ Rs. 70,000), and $1899.99 (Rs. 1,32,000) for the OLED variant.

  • Alienware m15 And m17 Series Gaming Laptops Launched At Computex 2019

Alienware m15 And m17 Series Gaming Laptops Launched At Computex 2019

Alienware, the premium gaming brand by Dell had earlier this year announced the Area-51m model laptop. The gaming laptop brought modular functionality along with it, something that was unheard of at the time for laptops in general. In Computex 2019, Alienware announced the same design incorporated in their new iterations of the m15 and m17 gaming laptops.

    Alienware

The m15 and m17 series laptop adopt a lot of the designs from the company’s flagship (Area-51m), essentially making the laptops identical to each other to a certain degree. These laptops are reportedly slimmer however and do not support Area-51m’s modular capabilities.

The m15 had received a major overhaul last year while the m17 was refreshed at CES, this is the second time the series went under a major physical overhaul. Changes are not strictly aesthetical in nature with the Alienware gaming laptops receiving a new keyboard with deeper key travel, and a new glass finish trackpad alongside the latest 9th-Gen Intel CPU processors and NVIDIA’s latest GTX and RTX graphics card.

    Alienware

Apart from the screen size of 15 and 17 inch respectively, not much differs between the two Alienware laptops. Display options although vary between the two devices. The 15-inch model offers more options with 60Hz, 144Hz, or even 240Hz refresh rate on the 1080p display panel or 4K at just 60Hz, the last two options that are equipped with Tobii eye-tracking. The 17-inch model only offers 60hz or 144hz on its 1080p panel where only the 144Hz variant has the eye tracker.

The modular function that allows users to replace parts for a laptop, achieved by the Alienware Area-51m, is a feature that will be sorely missed. The m15 and m17 models are set to be launched on June 11th with prices starting at $1,499

  • Dell Launches The Alienware Area 51m Gaming Laptop In India

Dell Launches The Alienware Area 51m Gaming Laptop In India

Dell’s premier gaming brand, Alienware has brought it’s latest gaming laptop to India. Named the Area 51m, the laptop is speculated to be the most powerful gaming laptop in the world. Also, the company claims that it is one of the world’s first “highly customizable” gaming laptop. Users can swap out various modules of the laptop as per their dynamic requirements.

Alienware Area 51m Features And Specifications

The Alienware Area 51m has a modern design, which is referred to by the company as a “Legend” design. The RGB enabled laptop supports customizable lighting, which means that users can adjust the colour scheme of the keyboard, mousepad, the power button, the logo and the rear air vents separately. Using AlienFX lighting, users can design custom profiles and assign them to hotkeys for convenient switching.

The laptop has the upgraded version of the signature Alienware TactX keyboard, which features N-Key rollover and programmable macro keys. Users can choose to include Tobii Eyetracking technology and NVIDIA G-Sync with the 17.3 inch Full HD Anti Glare IPS display. They can also choose between a 60Hz or 144Hz refresh rate on the aforementioned display.

Dell states that Alienware Area 51m uses the company’s proprietary cooling technology called Cryo-Tech v2.0, which sports a dual-intake design, high voltage driving fans and load-balancing heat pipes to optimize component cooling. The laptop also has a honeycomb thermal pattern which helps in increasing airflow, the company claims. Moreover, the laptop is made out of magnesium alloy to increase rigidity.

The Area 51m can be customized to run on the 8th or 9th generation Intel Core processors. Users have an option of choosing from the i7-8700 CPU, the i7-9700k or the i9-9900K chip. Various GPU options for the laptop include NVIDIA’s RTX 2060, the RTX 2070 and the RTX 2080, all of which can be overclocked as per the user’s requirements. The laptop has 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB RAM options. In terms of storage, users can select from the following options:

    • 1TB (+8GB SSHD) Hybrid Drive
    • 256GB PCIe SSD + 1TB Hybrid HDD
    • 512GB RAID 0 (2x 256GB PCIe M.2 SSDs) + 1TB (+8GB SSHD) Hybrid Drive

Users can upgrade their drives while customizing the laptop online to include even more memory options. The company claims that the level of customization present in the Area 51m is unlike any other gaming laptop in the market.

A 90Wh battery powers the machine. The Area 51m features a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port, which, the company claims, provides 2.5 times the speed of the conventional Ethernet connection. Moreover, the user can couple the laptop with the Alienware Graphics Amplifier to play games at enhanced framerates and resolution.

The Area 51m has the following ports

    • (1x) Power/DC-in Jack
    • (1x) RJ-45 Realtek 2.5Gbps Ethernet Port

  • Alienware Area- 51m, An Upgradable Gaming Laptop

Alienware Area- 51m, An Upgradable Gaming Laptop

Imagine a powerful desktop computer, but portable.  It sounds like a gamer’s dream. Well, not anymore since Alienware has done just that. The new Area- 51m is a completely customisable laptop. It was launched at CES 2019 by Dell and is going to change how gaming laptops have been seen so far.

Up until now, gaming laptops have concentrated on becoming smaller in size while providing top of the line specifications. But that has meant that while a customer buys the laptop, it supports all contemporary games but the specifications become obsolete as years go by. Games these days have become extremely demanding in terms of system specifications and this means that most gaming laptops stop supporting high end games in just a few years’ time. But the Aleinware Area- 51 can replace both the CPU and the GPU so that a gamer does not have to upgrade to a whole new laptop every few years.

    Specifications

The laptop will sport a ninth-gen Intel CPU and 20-series overclockable Nvidia GPU. This will be the first time that an Alienware laptop will support eight-core processors, 2.5Gbit Ethernet and 64GB of RAM.

The laptop will be available in various CPU and GPU configurations. The CPU options include Intel’s 9th Gen i7-8700, i7-9700K or i9-9900K. GPU options of the laptop are Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060, GeForce RTX 2070 or GeForce RTX 2080. The RAM options for the laptop range from 8GB to 64GB DDR4 RAM with single, dual and triple storage options, from 256GB to 3TB. The screen of the laptop is a 17 inch screen with 144Hz G- Sync display. It also has a 10/100/1000/2.5 Gbps RJ-45 Ethernet with Killer Wireless 1550 2×2 AC and Bluetooth 5.0. The laptop is in no way light and weighs in at 8.5 pounds. Some of the weight is due to the body being made from a magnesium alloy. It will be available in either white or matte black.

The cooling system used is called Cryo-Tech 2.0, which covers the dual-intake, dual-exhaust airflow design, copper fin stacks, heat pipes and high-voltage fans. It also has hexagonal shaped vents for cooling both under and at the back of the laptop.

The lowest specced laptop starts at just around $2,000 and should be available on Jan 21st, 2019.

  • Dell G3 Gaming Laptop Review : Gaming And More

Dell G3 Gaming Laptop Review : Gaming And More

Dell is well known for its Alienware gaming laptops. However, Dell is also pushing out machines that aren’t dedicated gaming machines, but deliver great gaming performance along with all-round usability. The Dell G3 is a part of this series of laptops and while it does not look like a traditional gaming laptop, it does pack some impressive specs on paper.

    [section label=”Design & Build”]

    Design & Build

The design of the Dell G3 is sober for a gaming laptop, to say the least. It does not have any flashy lights, heavy accents, nor does it feel like a gaming laptop. On the outside, it carries the Dell logo and a few ports. The laptop has an SD Card port, 2 SuperSpeed USB 3.1 ports, 1 USB 3.1 port, 1 HDMI port, 1 ethernet port, a headphone hack and the charging port. Relatively thin for a gaming laptop at 22.7 mm, the Dell G3 weighs in at just 2.5 Kg.

The subtle design is good in other environments or for users who do not perform heavy gaming. The design of the laptop ensures that it offers the perfect balance, appearing like a regular laptop.

    [section label=”Display”]

    Display

The Dell G3 has a 15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 IPS LED display. Being an IPS display, it has good viewing angles. The display has an anti-glare coating on it as well. The anti-glare coating is great as it protects your eyes from strain caused by continuous exposure to the display. However, the anti-glare coating is probably one of the most ‘glaring’ problems of the laptop. The coating seems to dim down the brightness of the display, and also makes it appear more dull. This is clearly visible while gaming as one feels like the laptop is not on full brightness.

Not only does this affect the gaming experience on the laptop, the issue spreads out to other utilities as well. If you are in a brightly-lit environment, or even outdoors, the display will be hard to view. Another drawback of the coating is that it does not produce an accurate representation of the colours. So if you’re a designer or an editor, using softwares such as Photoshop or Illustrator would be an issue.

    [section label=”Keyboard”]

    Keyboard

The Dell G3 has a full-sized keyboard which adds to your convenience. The keyboard is well spread out and the keys have good travel in between them. The feedback from the keys is also good, fit for both intense gaming and every day business affairs. The keyboard is also equipped with a num pad which is extremely helpful for both gaming as well as day-to-day office activities. The trackpad could have been a bit bigger, considering it needs to be used for gaming and the buttons on the trackpad are a little mushy. So fi you’re using the trackpad, we recommend using touch rather than the physical buttons on it.

The keyboard also has a blue backlight which gives that ‘gaming machine’ feel to the laptop. Again, the colour on the keyboard backlight is not very flashy and is good enough to be used in all environments.

    [section label=”Gaming”]

    Gaming

On paper, the Dell G3 has top of the line specifications. It has an 8th gen, Intel i7 processor which reaches upto 4.1 GHz with Turbo Boost. It runs on 8 GB of DDR4 RAM and has 128 GB of SSD storage, with an additional 1 TB HDD. For graphics, it is supported by the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti with a 4 GB GDDR5 graphics memory. All of this should make the G3 a gaming beast, but unfortunately, it isn’t.

While games such as PUBG run pretty smoothly at a high graphics configuration, the laptop does struggle with heavier games. For example, it could run Wolfenstein II and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey at mid graphics and at 30 fps. Also considering the fact that Wolfenstein II is relatively old. Adding to this is the average display which really took away the pleasure of a good gaming experience .

You can solve this issue by swapping out the 1 TB HDD for a faster and more efficient SSD. On the other hand, you can just run your games out of the existing 128 GB SSD on the laptop, or even upgrade that SSD to a higher storage capacity.

    [section label=”Performance”]

    Perfromance

The battery life on the laptop is decent, with it providing around an hour and a half with intense gaming and around 5-6 hours of light use. You can also disable the graphics card while not in use, which will add on its battery life.

The G3 also has a dedicated webcam, with a 720p resolution. While the camera quality is not brilliant, it is enough for basic video calling and Skype sessions. The laptop also has two microphones out front, which capture good sound and can be helpful if you forget to carry your gaming headsets around. The G3 also has 2 front firing speakers, which are tuned by Waves MaxxAudio, giving out good quality of sound, which makes for an immersive experience while gaming or viewing content.

    [section label=”Serviceability”]

    Serviceability

A huge advantage that the laptop does offer is the ability to swap out and upgrade components in case you want to upgrade something or simply change out faulty or worn out parts. The bottom has all the components laid out in a very accessible fashion. You can easily swap out your HDD for an SSD, for example.

    [section label=”Verdict”]

    Verdict

While the Dell G3 is not a hardcore gaming laptop, it fulfils what it sets out to do. It is an all-round performer with the ability to be used for day-to-day operations as well as a higher level of gaming. However, if you are someone who is looking for something that will exclusively be used as a gaming machine, the Dell G3 is not for you. But if you’re in the market for a feature packed, overall well performing laptop, this is probably the machine for you. At a price of Rs 84,990, this is a pretty good deal for its price.

  • Dell-EMC To Be Part Of A Merger Deal

Dell-EMC To Be Part Of A Merger Deal

In an attempt to shake off its PC-only image, Dell has entered into talks with EMC, the cloud commuting company, for a merger deal. It remains unknown at this point if it will be a partial or an entire merger. Reportedly, EMC has been exploring options based on the federation structure it has raised with partnerships in various vendors from the industry, which include names like VMWare, Red Hat, VCE, and Pivotal.dell

If the deal materializes, it would mean strengthening of the company’s stability in Asia. Dell’s Asia Pacific president, Amit Midha says,

“I think we clearly have to communicate our end to end message of security integration, cloud, future-ready infrastructure, software-defined infrastructure; all of these messages are not easily understood by companies so we have more work to do.”

This merger with an established cloud computing company would perhaps let Dell expand its identity. Based in Texas, Dell is now a leading name in the tech world, having come a long way since its inception in 1984. It’s decision to buy EMC would undoubtedly lead to interesting developments on the technology front internationally, but more importantly, closer home in Asia.
