  • Sony Claims 36 Million PlayStation 4 Owners are Ready for VR

Sony Claims 36 Million PlayStation 4 Owners are Ready for VR

Sony, at its annual Vision Summit 2016, featured conferences targetted at industry professionals from the virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) field. The keynote addresses kicked off the event, with the biggest names of the industry being part of it.

    sony_vr_headset_reveal

Sony’s very own, Dr. Richard Marks, Director of the PlayStation Magic Lab, Sony Computer Entertainment, held a conference on the importance of Sony’s move into the VR market and outlined why developers around the globe should be excited to be working on VR for the PlayStation platform..

In a bid to position the company as the easiest route forward for reaching a massive audience of end users primed for VR technology, Marks said that the PlayStation 4 ecosystem consisted of over 36 installed PS4 systems, and hence would serve as a better launch pad into the VR world as compared to other companies such as Google, Oculus.

Hinting at what is the biggest hurdle for VR tech on PC, he talked about how VR headsets from companies like Oculus and HTC would need additional expensive hardware in the form of a high-end end system, but for developers ready to take the plunge and develop VR tech for Playstation 4, they would have no such bottlenecks to worry about, as he proclaimed that ” every single one of the Playstation 4 consumers is ready for PlayStation VR”

A recent report by Valve’s Steam Hardware survey site states that there are around 5 million systems with VR-capable graphics cards today. Compare that to the already VR capable army of 36 million PlayStation 4s at hand, and you know that Dr. Richard Marks claims are anything but hollow.

  • HTC One M10 to Launch in April

HTC One M10 to Launch in April

There have been so many rumours regarding the launch of HTC’s upcoming flagship that it’s hard to tell the real from not. Initially, it was rumoured that HTC would launch the One M10 at MWC in February, but later we found that HTC wanted to hold an event of its own in March. Now, fresh rumours claim that HTC will hold its standalone event for the One M10 on the 11th of April.

Now, while HTC has yet to confirm these rumours, we’ll just have to wait a little longer to see if HTC has a device that can bring the company back from the brink of death. HTC need to pull something spectacular out of its hat if it wants to compete with the likes of Samsung, LG and Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship. The One M9 and One A9 did little to help HTC in terms of sales and image. While the One M9 was hated for the HTC logo band on the front, the One A9 was criticised for its apparent iPhone 6 rip-off.

    HTC One M10 01

From what we know about the One M10, the device looks a lot less like the One M9 and a lot more like the One A9. Renders show that the newest flagship ditches the front facing BoomSound dual speakers and the logo band, while the rest of the phone is pretty One A9-ish.

The rumoured specs of the One M10 suggest a 5.1-inch QHD AMOLED touchscreen, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 820 chipset powering the device with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a microSD card slot. On the camera front lies a 12 MP UltraPixel rear camera with laser autofocus and optical image stabilization. The device will likely run Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with HTC Sense 8 atop.

  • Apple Chooses TSMC Over Samsung as Chip Manufacturer

Apple Chooses TSMC Over Samsung as Chip Manufacturer

We love hearing about the love-hate relationship between Apple and Samsung. From lawsuits to manufacturing chipsets, the relationship is as diverse and complicated as it can get. Speaking of complications, Samsung has now been shunned by Apple and will not manufacture processors for the Cupertino-based giant this year.

According to reports, Apple has given TSMC the sole authority to manufacture the next-gen iPhone 7 processors this year, which are most likely the A10. One of the reasons behind this decision is that TSMC uses 10-nanometer processors which would result in smaller and more power efficient chipsets. This is something Apple would gladly fall head over heals for as the company is all about making its iPhone thinner without compromising on battery life.

    iphone-6s-display-1200x737

Although people wouldn’t mind if Apple kept the same thickness of the iPhone if it means better battery life. However, keeping some major rumours in mind, if Apple is indeed ditching the headphone jack for the iPhone 7, it could mean more space for a bigger battery. In other words, we could be looking at an iPhone 7 with a thinner look, faster chipset, and a longer battery life. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet. There’s still a while before Apple unveils its next-gen iPhone. So until then, let’s just speculate with the information we have.

LG G5 Specifications Revealed in Benchmark Test

As we approach closer and closer to February 21 where LG, among others, will unveil its flagship G5 smartphone, we will find a number of details in online that want fans to know everything about the device before it is unveiled. LG yesterday made official one of the features of the G5 and today we have some specifications confirmed by Geekbench benchmark test.

Apparently, someone with an LG G5 model decided to run a Geekbench test on the device and has posted the result online. We find that the device with the model number F700 will feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset and 4GB of RAM and will run on Android 6.1 Marshmallow. The test also reveals the G5 scoring a 2248 in single-core test and 5061 in multi-core.

    LG G5 Benchmark

Now, these specs are but a few and aren’t all that surprising. Being an Android flagship device in 2016, one expects to see the above specifications. The F700 model number logically implies the G5 as the F600 and F500 in the past stood for the V10 and G4, respectively.

Other specs still unconfirmed include a dual rear camera setup, an 8MP front camera, 5.6-inch QHD display. The device is also said to come in a modular design for easy access to the battery. We’ll know if any of the alleged rumors are true in just a few days time.

Harvard Study: Mechanical Stimulation Leads to Muscle Repair

A new research to come out of Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University and the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) suggests that mechanical stimulation will one day be able to help with muscle repair.

    picture40-13F1BDBCB3E0CC74C68

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. recently, shows skeletal muscle regeneration can be promoted in this manner. It could improve upon the current practices, or perhaps replace them entirely in the future if the method is adopted successfully.

“The results of our new study demonstrate how direct physical and mechanical intervention can impact biological processes and can potentially be exploited to improve clinical outcomes,” says David Mooney, a member of the team that is carrying out the study.

Half of the human body is made up of skeletal muscle which is capable of repairing itself in case of minor injuries. However severe trauma to the body as a result of accidents requires some sort of muscle regeneration which the body is often unable to provide on its own. This is where research like the mechanical stimulation of this specific process becomes relevant.

The method was tested upon two separate groups of mice. While one was provided with magnetized gel to be in direct contact with the damaged tissue, the other group was only given a robotic, pressurized cuff placed over the damaged part in a non-invasive manner.

The gel was exposed to magnetic pulses to bring about regular stimulation to the muscle. The robotic cuffs on the other hand were provided with pulses of air to regularly massage the required part. Over a period of two weeks, the results turned out to be markedly different.

There was a 2.5-times improvement in muscle regeneration and reduced tissue damage in the group which was provided mechanical stimulation. The reason behind this is that oxygen, fluids and important nutrients get transported to the injured regions as a result of direct stimulation and therefore help with muscle repair.

“This work clearly demonstrates that mechanical forces are as important biological regulators as chemicals and genes, and it shows the immense potential of developing mechanotherapies to treat injury and disease,” says Donald Ingber, a leading name in the field of mechanobiology.
