Tech Meets Sports : How Technology is Shaping the Future of Football

With the invention of television, tech changed the way we interacted with sports. Now, almost a century later, technology still strongly influences the way we watch, train for and play sports. These days, advanced fitness technology has been infiltrating professional sports, giving coaches and players detailed insights on how their bodies work and what they need to excel at, on the field. Taking it to a whole new level, with apps like Ubersense which provide real time video analysis and feedback on smartphones.

Soccer being the most beloved sport in the world surely gets the most advanced treatment when it comes to tech. Earlier this year the smartphone manufacturer HTC and the “futurologist” Dr Ian Pearson collaborated on a document titled The Future of Football. In the next few decades, robot football could become common, shirts might come with tiny cameras and fans could end up controlling players with smartphones. It all sounds a little strange, yes, and from a rather distant future but recently we have witnessed many changes in the football scenario that have been fuelled by tech.

Lets see how technology has taken soccer to a new level, promoting both player performance and comfort.

Real Time Performance Analysis

Ubersense_2-578-80

With the advancement in technology, many developers have come up with sophisticated apps and softwares which can analyze players performance in real time. Such apps including UberSense, V1sports and many more saves the coaches and players the tiresome task of collecting data on a number of laptops, charts and spreadsheets to keep videos and stats of the players. Wearable technology has also made training easy as players are now getting the help of fitness devices to get an edge on their competition. Devices like Adidas, miCoach, Speed_Cell and various heart rate monitors lets coaches analyse various parameters important in the game. For example, the Speed_Cell clips on to shoelaces or adidas shoes and measures maximum speed, distance, stride rate and game time. Coaches then take that data and analyse it to find ways to improve each player’s performance.

Wearable tech

spurs

Wearable tech in sports isn’t limited to fitness trackers anymore. Even the uniforms of soccer players have got a tech makeover. There are high-tech shirts with sensors that track information and promote player comfort during matches. In the 2014 world cup tournament, players wore shirts that were fit for the warm, humid conditions in Brazil, allowing players to keep cool and dry during the game, affecting overall stamina and performance.

Protective gears also make use of technology to ensure the safety of players. Most notably; cleats, shin guards, athletic taping and compression-fit fabric work to micro-massage players’ muscles to prevent excessive vibration and promote muscle health and energy supply. Sensors in shin guards allow players and coaches to collect data and analyse performance, too.

High Tech Soccer Balls

02_Goal-Control

One of the most important highlights of this year’s world cup was the inclusion of the GoalControl technology in the soccer balls. Also called the Goal-line tech, it helps referees to determine whether the ball has completely crossed the goal line or not. Also, there are balls  that measure impact and trajectory. Equipped with internal sensors, the ball sends feedback to its compatible app via Bluetooth technology. This data can help players improve their game.

Sideline viewing system

NFLSurfacelead

This is latest development in the field of NFL. Sideline viewing system hasn’t been used in Soccer as of now but the application of this system, which uses Microsoft’s Surface Pro, is much more practical for the soccer field. It allows NFL teams to review photos of plays instantly on the sidelines and up in the booths. For example, when the quarterback goes back to the bench, the Surface can then be used to see the opposing team’s defensive formation during the most recent drive and the same goes for the coaching staff that keeps an eye on the game from higher grounds. Even though the whole campaign was to promote Surface Pro, the application of this system is very beneficial on field for both players and coaches.

TAG Heuer Collaborates with Google, Plots its Way Through the World of Smartwatches

Tag Heuer, the world renowned high-end watch making company, will soon be announcing that it is working on building its own smartwatch. Chief Executive Office, Jean-Claude Biver told Bloomsberg in an interview that the company will be officially making a statement tomorrow about its partnership with Google and Intel. As Switzerland lacks the necessary resources in technology, the partnership with Silicon Valley giants will only benefit the company.

Intel has been signed to supply the processor, while there is no official word on how Google will be of help. It’s an easy assumption to make that the company would be incharge of providing a seamless OS experience, with Android Wear. Tag Heuer has taken us the mammoth responsibility of designing the watch-case and crown. Biver is also suggesting a Tag Heuer smart watch may come with dials, such as an analog watch.
I don’t see us taking a big risk unless we find a way to make luxury watches looking like real luxury watches that provide very easy-to-use, smart information that isn’t complicated—and don’t just replicate the mobile phone.
Tag Heuer stated that the craftsmanship of making this particular model will be very different than its traditional watches. Hence, the Research and the Development Business department has been split up into two.

In this age of Smartwatches, traditional Swiss Watch industries might be heading towards extinction. Swatch co-inventor Elmar Mock has said that the Apple Watch might put a lot of pressure on traditional watchmakers in Switzerland, and he anticipates an ice age for the industry.

We could be looking at a luxury Android Wear smart watch. Its availability and price have not been revealed. We will have to wait till tomorrow to find out the answers of these questions.

• Apple Watch Edition is Officially the Most Expensive Smart Watch

Apple Watch Edition is Officially the Most Expensive Smart Watch

Apple has lifted curtains on the new Apple Watch and different elements variations including the aluminum version Apple Watch Sport which starts at US$ 349 for  the 38mm and US$ 399 for the 42MM versions. The Apple Watch made from a custom version of stainless steel forged using special alloying techniques starting for a price of US$ 549 for 38mm and US$ 599 for the 42mm version, the strap you select will affect the pricing of course.

The Apple Watch Edition, aka the pure solid gold edition, available in a block of 18 carat yellow, or rose gold will go on sale starting at a whopping price of US $ 10,000 for the 38mm version, and the price will only increase as per the edition you decide to buy.

apple watch gold

The Apple Watch edition is set to target the high-end watch market, mainly from the name brand watches, the likes of Omega and Tag Heuer will see a shift in buying from the users.

The biggest reason, watch enthusiasts would stay away from smart watches would be the general availability of smart watches vs the exclusivity and high end precision with which the traditional watches were made.

With Apple creating a similar market for the Watch Edition, making it available in select quantities and in select stores across the world. Apple is basically pinging the high end watch lovers.

apple watch edition

The question however remains; Would a high end watch enthusiast drop his/her precision hand made watch that potentially would never need a charge for a watch that would require to be charged daily?

Will the Apple Watch Edition end up being a high price novelty? Especially considering that we might see a new version in about 365 days of launch.

German Company Lets You Print A 3D Replica of Yourself

The selfie culture refuses die down. It is the ultimate expression medium for the inner narcissist. Smartphone makers are also hard at work to give the best front camera capabilities to their handsets. Now a German company is taking things a step ahead. Why should you be only contended with digital images of yourselves when you can create a real life 3D printed replica.

Meet DOOB 3D created by a Dusseldorf-based company. To scan a person DOOB 3D system requires a room size scanning booth. The system incorporates 54 DSLRs, 54 lenses, an extensive 3D modeling pipeline. The final replica or the DOOB is printed out of full-colour 3D printer worth USD 80,000.

You can get DOOBed on your special occasions.
You can get DOOBed on your special occasions.

DOOB 3D can also print multiple people at one. A person just steps in the booth, and the cameras are all fired at once to capture the moment from all angles. All the images are transferred to a propriety software that creates the 3D model which is ready to be brought into the real world through the 3D printer.

You can also DOOB your furry friends.

The printer prints out the replica at a leisurely pace of 1.1 inches in an hour. The DOOBs are as tall as four to fourteen inches. It might take a few hours to half a day to print out a complete DOOB.

The 3D Printing revolution has begun and has unlimited possibilities. DOOB is utilizing the technology well, and the massive system could be shrunk down so that it can be introduced everywhere. Maybe the next step of this technology would be to create 3D self-replicas with moving parts. It might also let people print themselves as various different characters such as superheroes so imagine your shelf full of Marvel character action figures with your face on them. May however you look at it, DOOBs are cool.

• Next Step in Smartphone Evolution: A Handheld Disease Detector

Next Step in Smartphone Evolution: A Handheld Disease Detector

Smartphones have brought immense convenience to our lives. It has become an essential, part of our daily life and to some extent even control the schedule of our day. As the reach of these devices grows widespread, a lot of new uses are coming into prominence. One major field, where smartphones are proving useful, is medicine. These handheld machines can be a great tool for detection of diseases before they become life threatening.

Detecting Aids and Syphilis

Dongle Aids

Recently, researchers at the University of Columbia have unveiled a cheap accessory that can be plugged into the smartphone and could detect HIV and Syphilis. The device that costs just $34 and has been tested on 96 volunteers in Rwanda with promising results. Called a Dongle, it takes a fingerprick of blood, like a home glucose test and displays the result in just 15 minutes. This could come in as a handy detection tool as people can check themselves in the privacy of their home. So while the governments can work towards battling the stigma, this tool can get the patients to detect their disease and seek medical treatment.

This is just one of the latest in the line of valuable research which hopes to give the power of disease detection to the public through their trusty smartphones. Smartphones have been actively seen as the tools for providing low-cost disease detection. Below are few of the instances where the smartphones can come handy in medical situations.

Parkinson’s disease

Researchers at Aston University have developed a phone app that can spot signs of Parkinson disease with more than 90 per cent accuracy. The app tests the individual through voice analysis by asking the person to pronounce a sound in the phone recorder. Then it asks the person to walk 20 paces so that it can record the moments through the accelerometer. Finally, the person has to complete a simple finger dexterity test on the touchscreen.
Usually, Parkinson is tough to diagnose in the initial stages so a handy tool that is also accurate will help a long way to fight the disease.

Mobile Eye Care

peek-app

The camera of the smartphone can be a boon for people living in poor regions of the world. The visually impaired population of these areas don’t have regular access to medical facilities and doctors. Most of these illnesses are avoidable, but the lack of medical attention makes matters worse for the patients. Dr. Andrew Bastawrous wanted to give these people the gift of prolonged eyesight and hence created a smartphone app called Peek. To further check the retina of the eye, his team created a clip on a 3D printed attachment that costs less than $5 to produce. This attachment gives high-quality view of the back of the eye which is almost as good as the expensive laboratory equipment. The results gathered by the app are stored in a database accessible by doctors from all corners of the world who can stay in touch with their patients.

Urine Check

Ucheck

MIT entrepreneur Myshkin Ingawale unveiled his new mobile app Uchek at TED conference. An individual has to dip in a urinalysis strip in a cup and just take a photo of the strip; that’s it. Uchek can measure the levels of glucose, proteins, ketones and other values in the body through the image. It can be used to detect diabetes, urinary tract infections and up to 25 other diseases. Tests have shown that the app is more accurate that humans are at interpreting the color coded strips. The app costs a meager 99 cents while the color-coded strips are priced at $20. This might be one of the cheapest and beneficial tools for self-monitoring.

These are just a few ways in which smartphones are helping to make the lives of people better. It’s great to see how smartphone are evolving from simple communication tools into powerful machinery that can take care of our health and well being. People now have more access to smartphones than drinking and running water, and so they can come in handy to battle some of the most difficult human issues. Of course, smartphones won’t be able to take the place of doctors and health care workers any time soon, but they can become a valuable companion. With the arrival of healthcare wearables, it would become easier than ever to live a healthy life. The future looks good for a healthy humanity and smartphones may become one of the major reasons for that. And it definitely is a lot better use of these devices than crushing candies.

• Microsoft Pushes the Boundaries With HoloLens, But How Far Will it Go?

Microsoft Pushes the Boundaries With HoloLens, But How Far Will it Go?

The much-awaited consumer preview of Microsoft’s new operating system, Windows 10 is here. This is, of course, the best Windows OS yet and tries to repent for Microsoft’s follies in Windows 8. There are a lot of amazing features such as the return of the Start menu, Cortana, a new browser dubbed Spartan and much more. Windows 10 seems like it might also give a boost to Microsoft’s ailing smartphone business that it acquired from Nokia. But the gizmo that won everybody’s heart was the HoloLens, a one of a kind wearable that brings science fiction into reality. We look at this amazing innovation from Microsoft and see if the biggest tech company in the world finally found its winning formula.

HoloLens can make all our displays obsolete as it can conjure a display anywhere you want,
HoloLens can make all our displays obsolete as it can conjure a display anywhere you want

A Seamless Interaction between Digital Life and Real Life

Microsoft hits the top podium stand with the HoloLens at least in terms of imagination and innovation. The HoloLens has no match if you consider the manner in which it is presented. There have been previous attempts at making augmented reality based holographic glasses like Meta 1, but they appeared rather rudimentary. Google’s HoloLens gets the power of Windows 10 that will give it a boost above the rest. Also, with this product, Microsoft finally gets to stand up to Apple, whose biggest innovative offering has been the Apple Watch, which suffers from an extreme battery draining problem.

HoloLens bring Holographs into your everyday life.
HoloLens bring Holographs into your everyday life.

The demos of the HoloLens were definitely mind blowing. The virtual holographic objects appear as if they are a part of the real world. Interaction with this world also feels like a breeze. Microsoft has also unveiled the Holo Studio that lets you create 3D objects in a 3D environment and then using 3D printers, bring them into the real world. Unlike most of the product demo videos that exaggerate the possibilities of the technology, HoloLens seemed to perform exactly as it was presented. The creation process of the quad copter literally felt as if we were in Tony Stark’s workspace.

The Technology

The HoloLens is a self contained computer on its own and doesn't require connection to Phone or a PC.
The HoloLens is a self contained computer on its own and doesn’t require connection to Phone or a PC.

The HoloLens is a self-contained computer. It includes a CPU, a GPU, and a dedicated holographic processor unit (HPU). It neither has wire nor does it require a connection to a phone, PC or any other device. It has 120 by 120 field of view, which is even wider than the Kinect. The wide view lets it see what your hands are doing even while they’re completely outstretched. The device has to process a lot of information that might lead to a lot of heat, to solve the issue; there are air vents on the side that disperse the heat. On the right side of the device are the buttons that let you adjust the volume and contrast of the Holographs.

Applications

HoloLens doesn’t just present an amazing bunch of features it also makes several previous technology such as various displays almost obsolete. With the HoloLens, you can conjure a display anywhere and of any size you desire. It can be used as a teaching tool and would bring a whole new meaning to “learning by doing”. Students can be given lessons in an interactive format where they’ll get the option to manipulate the lessons to see what happens. For e.g.; a holographic globe can be used in the class learning Geography that shows the movement of ocean currents and the formation clouds caused by it. This would be a lot more interactive than a dull map with lines drawn on them.

Lessons get interactive and more engaging with HoloLens.
Lessons get interactive and more engaging with HoloLens.

You can also bid goodbye to the game boards, and the gaming consoles as the entire world becomes a virtual gaming space. As the technology will progress, developers are bound to introduce virtual reality gaming that with the might of HoloLens, will be better than anything we’ve experienced till now.

Designing process gets real easy with real time 3D modelling coupled with 3D printing.
Designing process gets real easy with real time 3D modelling coupled with 3D printing.

On the enterprise front, the HoloLens will allow for virtual interactions between the entire team even if they are sitting thousands of kilometres away. Industrial designing, when coupled with 3D printing, would make the design process a lot more interactive. A vehicle designer or an architect can have an all-round view of their project and can find deficiencies and solve it after which they can get a 3D model printed.

Mars, just a HoloLens away

Microsoft has partnered with Nasa to create OnSight that lets scientists walk on Mars surface.
Microsoft has partnered with Nasa to create OnSight that lets scientists walk on Mars surface.

The coolest aspect of the HoloLens is how it is useful for the scientists at NASA. Now the researchers can have an immersive view of the Martian surface. To aid the scientists, Nasa and Microsoft have created a software called OnSight. Using the data sent by the Curiosity Rover on Mars, the scientist can have access to the surroundings of the rover to almost the same degree as a geologist on earth. Nasa plans to proactively use the OnSight software for the research. They also plan to integrate the technology in future missions including the next Mars rover expected to launch in 2020.

Microsoft will be opening the platform for developers this spring. The developers will get access to all the information during Microsoft’s Build conference from April 29 to May 1, 2015. Microsoft has said that it will be priced for both enterprise as well as consumer users. With the HoloLens and the successful preview of the Windows 10, Microsoft has finally managed to win our hearts again. With the HoloLens, everybody gets to be Tony Stark. Microsoft has not just pushed boundaries of holography but has also set a technological standard for others to match.

Dear Apple, that Watch just doesn’t cut it anymore, show us something that really blows our minds.

• Windows 10 is a Free Upgrade for Existing Windows 7 and 8.1 Users

Windows 10 is a Free Upgrade for Existing Windows 7 and 8.1 Users

Microsoft has basically followed in Apple’s path, and made Windows 10 a free update for their existing consumers. There are limitations and this will only be applicable for the first year, which does not seem to be much of an excuse for complaining.

To explain it further Microsoft states :

This is more than a one-time upgrade: once a Windows device is upgraded to Windows 10, we will continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device – at no additional charge. With Windows 10, the experience will evolve and get even better over time. We’ll deliver new features when they’re ready, not waiting for the next major release. We think of Windows as a Service – in fact, one could reasonably think of Windows in the next couple of years as one of the largest Internet services on the planet.

Enterprise customers are not left behind and continue to get the same service and support as previous paid “enterprise” versions.

• MIT’s THAW Brings Ultimate Seamless Interconnectivity Between Smartphones and PC

MIT’s THAW Brings Ultimate Seamless Interconnectivity Between Smartphones and PC

With a PC and Mobiles being an absolute necessity, it is necessary to have seamless interaction between them. Apple’s latest ecosystem attempts to do just that. Continuity features like Handoff let users continue their work from their phone to their Mac PC’s without a delay. Not to be left behind, Google also announced some interconnectivity features between Android desktops and Chrome systems. But these attempts are still futile in comparison to MIT’s THAW which takes seamless interconnectivity to a whole new level.

THAW

Two teams of researchers at MIT have developed a smartphone system called THAW which allows users to transfer files through and fro from PC to a smartphone. This can be done simply by touching the phone to the screen of the desktop PC. You can take the webpage you were working on your phone by just touching the phone to the screen. It almost feels like those screens in sci-fi flicks which can be shifted from one display to another, like Avatar.

THAW makes you phone a physical handle through which you can send or receive files directly from the screen. The secret behind the technology is the phone camera. The camera takes the image from the desktop screen and then through software manipulations the files are accessible on the phone. This feature will help solve the file management clarity issue that everyone is trying to address. Apple’s Cloud Storage now gives the ability to change the content, and it will appear the same from all your devices. THAW just takes it a bit further.

Now this project is still in its infancy and may or may not come to the market. But just the knowledge of the possibility of this technology will create a boom for devices with such functionalities. This looks like an excellent feature to have and looks so simplistic and effortless. Hopefully, the companies are watching; this is one feature that everyone will love. MIT researchers claim that this can work with practically any smartphone with accelerometer, so come on Samsung, here’s an idea for the Galaxy S6.
