Meizu to Launch a New Product in India Soon

Meizu, one of China’s top 10 smartphone brands, is said to be soon launching a new product in India on the 26th of August 2015.

    Meizu blue blue

Reports suggest that this new product could be the MX5 smartphone which was announced in China back in June this year. The expected pricing of this product is quoted as being in the sub-20,000 range.

The MX5 is priced at 260 euros (approx. Rs.18,826) with features such as – a 5.5 inch screen with an AMOLED captive touchscreen and a 20.7 MP camera and a 5MP front camera.

The MX5 is reportedly being closely followed by other Chinese vendors, especially OnePlus. As Kiranjeet Kaur, Research Manager with IDC’s Asia/Pacific MobilePhone team said:

“Key to the success of the Chinese vendors has been popular flash sales through online players such as Flipkart, Snapdeal and Amazon. At the same time, they also focused on bringing more 4G phones at affordable $100-150 price points which is left unattended by Indian and global vendors”.

It is yet to be seen whether India will be the new battlefield for Chinese vendors.

  • Here’s How You Can Have a Dual-SIM Feature Even On Your iPhone 6

Here’s How You Can Have a Dual-SIM Feature Even On Your iPhone 6

The Apple iPhones seem to be very efficient in every respect, except for the fact that they do not ever come with a dual-SIM feature. This may or may not be a huge factor for many people, but there are  a select few perhaps,s who would like to use just one phone for their work as well as their personal calls/messages/emails.

    iphone 6 piece kickstarter

Kickstarter has the perfect solution to your problems, if you are in the latter category of users. They aim to launch a product called Piece that allow the iPhone 6 and other older iPhone models to handle two different SIMs on one phone.

The gadget is small enough to fit in a wallet, without jutting out and can connect to the iPhone via Bluetooth. It is said to have a slot for your second SIM and has a battery that lasts for up to 150 hours.

To activate this, there is a special iOS app that lets you manage the Piece SIM. This device also allows you to locate your handset when the two devices are more than 30 feet apart. So in case you forget to carry your Piece, your iPhone automatically beeps, in order to remind you that you’re forgetting something important and vice versa in case you leave your iPhone – then your Piece starts beeping.

The campaign has is around the corner and has already amassed a healthy amount of $35,000. The device is small and affordable at $70, that is, around Rs.4,533, and is said to start shipping sometime around September.

The Piece is also compatible with Android devices and will also release an Apple Watch App as soon as it crosses $100,000 in funding.

  • The Galaxy S6 Edge Vs. the S6 Edge+

The Galaxy S6 Edge Vs. the S6 Edge+

The Unpacked Event, saw the launch of two devices – the Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge+. The S6 Edge+ is the bigger and the edgier sibling to the glamorous Galaxy S6 Edge.

Samsung S6 Edge India Launch 5

The Galaxy S6 Edge+ is noted to have a bigger display but yet is a smaller and more compact when compared to devices like the iPhone 6 Plus which have a smaller 5.5 inch display. The S6 Edge seemed to be the only premium look and feed Samsung device which even came close to the iPhone 6. But, with the S6 Edge+ it seems like that mission might have reached closer to its target, especially by excluding the expandable memory feature.

    LifeStyle 22
The device seems almost impeccable when it comes to its design – the S6 Edge had an aluminum frame and was protected by the Gorilla Glass 4 on both sides, this feature has been retained by the S6 Edge+ too. However, the new device looks sleeker with a display that extends up to the edges of the curved screen.

The S6 Edge had been applauded as being the first dual edged display smartphone and the S6 Edge+ continues to be applauded with a slight change of making the edges softer and thereby enhancing the visual appeal of the smartphone, the bigger stance of the phone allows for more display real estate.

    Fast Wireless Charging
    Fast Wireless Charging

Samsung has kept most of the hardware intact loosing some pixel density to the larger display. However the LPDDR4 RAM sees a bump up to 4 GB and so does the battery by about 400 mAh.

The new S6 Edge+ features fast wireless charging, which is a mix of the fast charging seen on the S6 along with a new wireless charging standard developed by Samsung, which is said to fully charge the handset in about 120 minutes wirelessly.

    SideSync
    SideSync

The S6 Edge+ along with Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 5 both support a new feature called SideSync which is much like Apple’s continuity however it goes further by letting you use your phone from the computer screen and share files. This feature is also said to work on both Windows and Mac platforms.

  • Here is What’s New in The Galaxy Note 5 vs The Note 4

Here is What’s New in The Galaxy Note 5 vs The Note 4

The Galaxy Note 5 is the newest Flagship for Samsung. The phablet category maker that changed everything for Samsung gets an overhaul, it also is a change in the way Samsung thinks design.

    Samsung Galaxy Note Edge 8

Last year the Note 4 was a Samsung first too, when the Phablet saw an Edge variant and a metal framed body construction. Learning heavily from that and the uber-success of the S6 in global markets, the Galaxy Note 5 is an all new metal and glass clad flagship for the company and prospective buyers will be pleased.

    LifeStyle 20

Samsung does also bring the flaws of the Galaxy S6 into the mix. Many have disliked the non removable battery and non expandable store on the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy Note 5 also lacks in the same areas. Samsung brings an all new Gorilla Glass 4 front and back to the Note device, with coloured glass panels as seen on the S6 and S6 edge. Last year’s Note 4 took a more traditional Samsung approach of the leather look back panel seen on the Note 3 and Galaxy S5. This year the more premium looking Samsung Galaxy Note 5 will grab all the attention prior to the next iPhone launch, especially because that is what the company was gunning for.

Galaxy S6 edge+_Note5_Black_Gold_2PSamsung seems to have liked what they did with the Galaxy S6 and the S6 Edge, as they bring the same Octacore chipset as on the S6 and S6 Edge onto the Note 5. The LPDDR-4 RAM and newer camera optics, all of which are shared by younger siblings the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge, have also been added to the Note 5 (the Note 5 gets 4 GB RAM). The Note 4 was run on Snapdragon chipsets, and with instability issues, Samsung chose not to use the Snapdragon chipsets and rather went with their own chipsets on the Note 5 as well.

The inclusion of colour options on the Note 5 means that Samsung is now targeting a wider array of prospective buyers, especially those who have loved the gold and blue variants on the S6. While the company had chosen a more traditional black and white approach last year with the Note 4.

This years Note 5 will also see cover options and accessories all of which are built to highlight and use features like the new S-Pen with ease.

LifeStyle 15The S-Pen is also new, with a click mechanism at the back that lets you easily mount and unmount the pen from the Galaxy Note 5. The S-Pen software features are also improved with a simpler UI and a dark scribble note mode which basically lets you scribble a note when the screen is turned off.

What is also new in the Note 5 when compared to Note 4 is Samsung Pay, a transaction system designed and made to run with virtually all credit card machines globally. This will currently be launched in the US and Korea and will later be available to the world.

    LifeStyle 12
    Samsung Pay

Samsung has also added something that they call fast wireless charging into the mix with their new Galaxy Note 5. The Samsung Galaxy S6 supported fast charging via microUSB and wireless charging over various standards. Samsung claims to have combined these technologies and have launched a fast wireless charger, which in theory should also be backward compatible with the Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge.

  • OnePlus One Price to Remain the Same Says Co-Founder Carl Pei

OnePlus One Price to Remain the Same Says Co-Founder Carl Pei

In a recent interview, OnePlus co-founder, Carl Pei said that they would not be slashing down prices for the OnePlus One even as sales for OnePlus 2 kickoff.

OnePlus has been a successful startup right from the beginning and with the OnePlus 2 registration reaching nearly 3 million now, it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere, anytime soon. Carl Pei also mentioned the fact that they were very humbled at the immensely positive response to the product, especially as huge crowds were seen lining up the day before the launch to buy the product.

“There’s no planned OnePlus One price cut. We see price cuts as slapping our early customers in the face, and will only resort to it when we have no other choice.” – said Carl Pei

OnePlus continues to strive towards its motto of ‘Never Settle’ with the co-founder also quoted as saying, “You don’t kill other flagships by cramming all the specs into a device. That’s a surefire path to mediocrity. Never settle for mediocrity.”

    OnePlus 2 2

With its holistic approach and focus to sell quality devices with high specs at affordable prices, OnePlus seems to be doing more than alright, for now.

  • According to IDC, India’s Smartphone Market Will Overtake USA’s by 2017

According to IDC, India’s Smartphone Market Will Overtake USA’s by 2017

International Data Cooperation (IDC) recently reported that, after a slow start in the first quarter, the smartphone shipment in India grew 44% to 26.5 million units, in the June quarter. Not just this but we can also expect a huge leap forward over the next few years, as people will switch to smartphones and 4G-enabled devices.

“By 2017, we expect India to overtake USA to be the second largest smartphone market globally,” it said in a statement issued by IDC.

“This strong second quarter performance saw smartphone shipments grow by 19%, following a sluggish first quarter this year,” IDC added.

However, we should note that the IDC hasn’t released shipment numbers for the January-March 2015 quarter. Samsung maintained its leadership in the Indian smartphone market with 23% share, followed by Micromax (17% ), Intex (11%), Lava (7%) and Lenovo (6%).

Times of India accompanied this information with the fact that the overall Indian mobile phone market has actually shrunk by 6% in the said quarter on a year-on-year basis. 59.4 million units were shipped in the June quarter, as  compared to 63.2 million units being shipped in the second quarter of 2014.

“e-tailers have opened additional avenues for growth for many vendors in India, who would have otherwise struggled to get a hold in the complex distribution network,” IDC India Mobile Phone team Research Manager Kiran Kumar said. This explains the reason for such magnanimous growth as vendors are using online retail or “eTail” to infiltrate the market. However, India continues to be a retail dominated market, even as companies like, Lenovo and Xiaomi are continuing to expand in the subcontinent.

A second reason is that Chinese phone companies like the above mentioned, as well as Huawei and Gionee account for 12% of the total smartphone market in the second quarter. This means that China has tripled its shipments to India, thereby doubling the units shipped, from last year.

The IDC concludes by saying that, at the rate India’s going, it might be able to overtake America’s Smartphone market by 2017. That would be interesting, wouldn’t it?

  • Moto G (3rd gen) Review – 2015

    Moto G (3rd gen) Review – 2015

The new Moto G for 2015 is the hero for Motorola. With a whole spew of upgrades, the new Moto G is ready to take on the market. With little change in design and price, the customer is left asking for a lot more.

    Overview

The new Moto G is available in two variants; a cheaper one priced at Rs. 11,999 comes with 8GB storage and 1 GB of RAM, whereas, a slightly expensive one at Rs 12,999 comes with 16 GB of storage and 2 GB of RAM. You also have a whole variety of covers that you can buy and swap with your current cover.

    Moto G Gen 3 2

    Build Quality and Design

Design wise you have a whole lot of differences starting with the back of the new Moto G, all the way to the front. It’s more rounded and has silver accents, which add to the premium look and feel of the device. The long cut in the back panel houses the camera equipment and the panel has a new reassuring texture.

Build is superior when compared to the last gen of the Moto G. With the IPX7 rating, the new Moto G can also withstand 3 ft (1 M) of water immersion. This makes the phone one of kind in this price bracket  and also the second device only after the Apple Watch to have this rating.

    Moto G Gen 3 18

The plastic shells are high quality and swappable, which mean you can easily replace the back if damaged. The new Moto G also has Gorilla glass and a new solid structured frame that makes it a big winner in the build department.

    Moto G Gen 3 23

    Hardware

No hardware does not get a big boost, but you do get an improved camera, a slightly faster and more stable chipset and that is just about it. USB On the go is easily available, you also have micro SD card slots for expandability and two hardware options; 1 GB RAM + 8 GB Storage or 2 GB RAM + 16 GB Storage both of which support expandability and are separated only by a Rs. 1000 price difference.

    Specifications

    Moto G (Gen 3)

Display 5 inches, Corning Gorilla Glass 3
    Resolution HD, 1280×720 pixels
    Chipset Qualcomm MSM8916 Snapdragon 410

    Storage 8GB/16GB

    Rear Camera 13MP
    Front Camera 5MP
Video 1080p HD video, 30 fps
    Battery 2470 mAh
    Operating System Android 5.1.1 Lollipop
    Connectivity Bluetooth v4.0, A2DP, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, GPS, AGPS, GLONASS
    GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
    HSDPA 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100
    LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 7(2600), 20(800)
Price  Rs. 11,999 for 8 GB and Rs. 12,999 for 16 GB

    Performance

The Moto G Gen 3 is more of a balanced smartphone. You won’t get a performance monster and you shouldn’t expect it to be one especially with the specifications it is packing. The 2 GB version, only slightly more expensive performs far better than the 1 GB variant. It will also bump up the onboard storage to 16 GB which would only make sense.

The User interface is fast and smooth and the stock Android helps with that to a big extent. The GPU handles multitasking and gaming with ease, although some applications tend to lag with the 1 GB variant. The 2 GB will work well for day to day usage and also with gaming.

Games work well with the 2 GB variant, as mentioned earlier. If you choose to run your games (like Asphalt 8) with higher graphics you will face some lag, mainly due to the limitations of graphics processing.

    Camera and Multimedia

The 13 MP main camera is a big improvement, mix it up with the Android 5.1 camera capabilities and you get a great camera experience. Manually set up focus and exposure before you click the picture. The camera focuses quickly so you can go up close with your subjects and get a good depth of field. Images tend to be sharp and autofocus is snappy. Its a pity that the Moto G misses a proper oleophobic display, which would allow you to use the phone under water. No, you don’t have an underwater camera with the new Moto G.

    Moto G Gen 3 15

No image stabalization also means that shaky hands need to beware of the induced camera shake. Video stays at 1080p and you also get some high speed capture at 720p reducing speeds to half, if needed.

The speaker is forward facing and has good audio. Despite the dual grills there is only a mono speaker. We would have liked a louder speaker, or at least a stereo speaker combo. The forward facing speaker makes the audio experience while watching video or playing games, improved.

The display is still a 1280 x 720p panel but is extremely vivid and bright. Outdoor visibility could have been better, but is very usable. The display has good viewing angles and the colours pop, so you won’t find us complaining. We did want a 1080p display and since most of the competition does offer up a 1080p display in this segment, it became a let down for us.

    Phone Networks and Battery

With the inclusion of 4G networks, the Moto G adds the list of network ready phones. A major deal of Androids will join this list by the end of the year as most network players will offer 4G services.

The network performance is good and the audio quality is excellent. The connection strength is a big improvement over the last gen. phone. With the IPX7 rating, the one thing we really wanted to check was underwater calling capability. The phone does ring, but making a call is practically impossible as the display goes crazy with electric conduction the minute you unlock the screen, so your phone will randomly jump from app to app. We don’t really want to be making calls underwater, but hey, it could come in handy.

    Moto G Gen 3 6

We are getting mixed reports about the battery life, some users are complaining of battery drain and others of overheating issues. However, we faced no such issues, and the phone gave us 1+ day of average use. We are expecting 4-5 hours of talk time mixed with varied use. Charge the Moto G once a day and you are good to go.

    • Talk Time 4G : 4.5 Hours
    • Internet : 7-8 hours of surfing
    • Music : 11 hours
    • Video : 5 hours

    Conclusion

The Moto G (3rd Gen) is a smart upgrade from a good company. They did miss out on a few key things, a better display and a better chipset would make this the best phone for the price. However, it is a smart choice. It has the trust of a motorola handset, and the added legacy of great phones like the Moto Defy. Also the IPX7 rating, makes it the only phone in this class, with any such rating. It will be useful for those who need it.

Moto G Gen 3 1Lastly, the swappable colour covers make sense and add personal style. Availability is easy, no flash sales and no invites. Smartphones need to be easy to buy and readily available in 2015, and the new Moto G ticks all the boxes of being a well rounded phone.
